Abstract:Given an algebraic curve $X$ of genus $\ge 3$, one can construct two algebraic $1$-cycles, the Ceresa cycle and the Gross-Kudla-Schoen modified diagonal cycle, each living in the Jacobian of $X$ and the triple product $X \times X \times X$ respectively. These two cycles are homologically trivial but are of infinite order in their corresponding Chow groups for a very general curve over $\mathbb{C}$. From the work of S-W Zhang, for a fixed curve these two cycles are non-torsion in their corresponding Chow groups if and only if one of them is. In this paper, we prove that the Ceresa and Gross-Kudla-Schoen cycles associated to a modular curve $X$ are non-torsion in the corresponding Chow groups when $X=\Gamma \backslash \overline{\mathbb{H}}$ for certain congruence subgroups $\Gamma\subset {\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$. We obtain the result by studying a pullback formula for special divisors by the diagonal map $X \hookrightarrow X \times X$.

Abstract:Feng-Yun-Zhang have proved a function field analogue of the arithmetic Siegel-Weil formula, relating special cycles on moduli spaces of unitary shtukas to higher derivatives of Eisenstein series. We prove an extension of this formula in a low-dimensional case, and deduce from it a Gross-Zagier style formula expressing intersection multiplicities of cycles in terms of higher derivatives of base-change $L$-functions.

Abstract:This article gives a new proof of the Gross--Kohnen--Zagier theorem for Shimura curves which exploits the $p$-adic uniformization of Cerednik--Drinfeld. The explicit description of CM points via this uniformization leads to an expression relating the Gross--Kohnen--Zagier generating series to the ordinary projection of the first derivative, with respect to a weight variable, of a $p$-adic family of positive definite ternary theta series.

Abstract:This chapter states the main result of this book regarding Shimura curves and abelian varieties as well as the main idea of the proof of a complete Gross–Zagier formula on quaternionic Shimura curves over totally real fields. It begins with a discussion of the original formula proved by Benedict Gross and Don Zagier, which relates the Néeron–Tate heights of Heegner points on X⁰(N) to the central derivatives of some Rankin–Selberg L-functions under the Heegner condition. In particular, it considers the Gross–Zagier formula on modular curves and abelian varieties parametrized by Shimura curves. It then decribes CM points and the Waldspurger formula before concluding with an outline of our proof, along with the notation and terminology.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to prove a formula expressing the modular height of a quaternionic Shimura curve over a totally real number field in terms of the logarithmic derivative of the Dedekind zeta function of the totally real number field. Our proof is based on the work of Yuan-Zhang-Zhang on the Gross-Zagier formula and the work of Yuan-Zhang on the averaged Colmez conjecture. All these works are in turn inspired by the Pioneering work of Gross-Zagier and some philosophies of Kudla's program.

Abstract:We use the method of Bruinier--Raum to show that symmetric formal Fourier--Jacobi series, in the cases of norm-Euclidean imaginary quadratic fields, are Hermitian modular forms. Consequently, combining a theorem of Yifeng Liu, we deduce Kudla's conjecture on the modularity of generating series of special cycles of arbitrary codimension for unitary Shimura varieties defined in these cases.

Abstract:We prove results describing the structure of a Chow ring associated to a product of graphs, which arises from the Gross-Schoen desingularization of a product of regular proper semi-stable curves over discrete valuation rings. By the works of Johannes Kolb and Shou-Wu Zhang, this ring controls the behavior of the non-Archimedean height pairing on products of smooth proper curves over non-Archimedean fields. We provide a complete description of the degree map, and prove vanishing results affirming a conjecture of Kolb, which, combined with his work, leads to an analytic formula for the arithmetic intersection number of adelic metrized line bundles on products of curves over complete discretely valued fields.
An automorphic description of the zeta function of the basic stratum of certain Kottwitz varieties

Abstract:We derive formulas for the number of points on the basic stratum of certain Kottwitz varieties in terms of automorphic representations and certain explicit polynomials, for which we present efficient algorithms for computation. We obtain our results using the trace formula, base change, representations of general linear groups over p-adic fields, and a truncation of the formula of Kottwitz for the number of points on Shimura varieties over finite fields.

A New $\pm$ Iwasawa Theory and Converse of Gross-Zagier and Kolyvagin Theorem (with an Appendix by Yangyu Fan)

Abstract:Let $p>3$ be a prime. In this paper we develop a new kind of anticyclotomic local $\pm$-Iwasawa theory at $p$ for Hecke characters of quadratic imaginary fields which is valid for all ramification types of $p$ (split, inert and ramified). As an application we deduce the converse of Gross-Zagier-Kolyvagin theorem for these CM forms, which states that Selmer rank one implies analytic rank one. To carry out the Iwasawa theory argument we employ a recent construction of a new type of $p$-adic $L$-function by Andreatta-Iovita, and generalized by Yangyu Fan to Shimura curves in the Appendix, and a ``virtual Heenger family'' made via a limiting procedure from a Heegner family along Coleman-Mazur eigencurve constructed by Jetchev-Loeffler-Zerbes.

Abstract:We define and study a collection of special cycles on certain non-PEL Shimura varieties for $U(2,1) \times U(1,1)$ that appear naturally in the context of the recent conjectures of Gan, Gross and Prasad on restrictions of automorphic forms for unitary groups and conjectural generalizations of the Gross--Zagier formula. We prove a combinatorial formula expressing the Galois action in terms of the distance function on the Bruhat--Tits buildings for these groups. In addition, we calculate explicitly the Hecke polynomial appearing in the congruence relation conjectured by Blasius and Rogawski. Using methods and recent results of Koskivirta, we prove the congruence relation in this case. Finally, using the action of the local Hecke algebra on the Bruhat--Tits building, we establish explicit relations (distribution relations) between the Hecke action and the Galois action on the special cycles. These relations are key for a work in progress by the author on constructing a new Euler system from these cycles and using it to prove instances of the Bloch{Kato{ Beilinson conjecture for certain Galois representations associated to automorphic forms on unitary groups.

Abstract:In this paper we study the Oort conjecture concerning the non-existence of Shimura subvarieties contained generically in the Torelli locus in the Siegel modular variety A(g). Using the poly-stability of Higgs bundles on curves and the slope inequality of Xiao on fibered surfaces, we show that a Shimura curve C is not contained generically in the Torelli locus if its canonical Higgs bundle contains a unitary Higgs subbundle of rank at least (4g + 2)/5. From this we prove that a Shimura subvariety of SU(n, 1) type is not contained generically in the Torelli locus when a numerical inequality holds, which involves the genus g, the dimension n + 1, the degree 2d of CM field of the Hermitian space, and the type of the symplectic representation defining the Shimura subdatum. A similar result holds for Shimura subvarieties of SO(n, 2) type, defined by spin groups associated to quadratic spaces over a totally real number field of degree at least 6 subject to some natural constraints of signatures.
Modularity of higher theta series II: Chow group of the generic fiber

Abstract:Higher theta series on moduli spaces of Hermitian shtukas were constructed by Feng--Yun--Zhang and conjectured to be modular, parallel to classical conjectures in the Kudla program. In this paper we prove the modularity of higher theta series after restriction to the generic locus. The proof is an upgrade, using motivic homotopy theory, of earlier work of Feng--Yun--Zhang which established generic modularity of $\ell$-adic realizations. In the process, we develop some general tools of broader utility. One such is the "motivic sheaf-cycle correspondence", a categorical trace formalism for extracting computations in the Chow group from computations in Voevodsky's derived category of motives. Another new tool is the "derived homogeneous Fourier transform", which we use to implement a form of Fourier analysis for motives.

Abstract:We consider the Beilinson-Bloch heights and Abel-Jacobian periods of homologically trivial Chow cycles in families. For the Beilinson-Bloch heights, we show that for any $g\ge 3$, we can construct a Zariski open dense subset $\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{amp}}$ of $\mathcal{M}_g$, the coarse moduli of curves of genus $g$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, such that the heights of Ceresa cycles and Gross-Schoen cycles over $\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{amp}}$ have a lower bound and satisfy the Northcott property. For the Abel-Jacobi periods, we prove that the Ceresa and Gross-Schoen cycle over every non-$\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ point in $\mathcal{M}_g^{\mathrm{amp}}$ is non-torsion. We also prove results and make conjectures for any family $X \rightarrow S$ of smooth projective varieties and homologically trivial cocycles $Z$ defined over a number field. Using the Betti strata, we construct a Zariski open subset $S^{\mathrm{amp}}$ of $S_{\mathbb{C}}$ over which $Z_s$ is non-torsion for all transcendental points $s$ and prove a criterion for $S^{\mathrm{amp}}$ to be dense. We conjecture the rationality of $S^{\mathrm{amp}}$ and also conjecture that $S^{\mathrm{amp}}$ is precisely the open locus on which the Beilinson-Bloch height of $Z_s$ has a lower bound and satisfies the Northcott property.
