Abstract:The connection between the quantum-vacuum geometric phases (which originates from the vacuum zero-point electromagnetic fluctuation) and the non-normal product procedure is considered in the present Letter. In order to investigate this physically interesting geometric phases at quantum-vacuum level, we suggest an experimentally feasible scheme to test it by means of a noncoplanarly curved fiber made of gyrotropic media. A remarkable feature of the present experimental realization is that one can easily extract the nonvanishing and nontrivial quantum-vacuum geometric phases of left- and/or right- handed circularly polarized light from the vanishing and trivial total quantum-vacuum geometric phases.
Monomode Photon Spin Operators Projected Onto the Fixed Frame and Quantum-Vacuum Geometric Phases of Photons Inside a Noncoplanar Optical Fibre

Abstract:The propagation of monomode photons inside a coiled optical fibre was regarded as a time-dependent quantum evolution process, which gives rise to a geometric phase. It is well known that the investigation of non-adiabatic geometric phases ought to be performed only in the Schrödinger picture. So, the projections of photon spin operators onto the fixed frame of reference is discussed in this paper. In addition, we also treat the non-normal-order spin operators and consider the potential effects (e.g., quantum-vacuum geometric phases) of quantum fluctuation fields arising in a curved optical fibre. The quantum-vacuum geometric phase, which is of physical interest, can be deducted by using the operator normal product, and the doubt of validity and universality for the normal-normal procedure applied to time-dependent quantum systems is thus proposed. In the Appendix, the discussion of possible experimental realizations of quantum-vacuum geometric phases is briefly presented.

Abstract:The quantum vacuum contribution to Berry's geometric phase of photon fields inside a noncoplanarly curved (coiled) fiber is considered by means of the second-quantization formulation. It is shown that the quantum vacuum Berry's phases of left- and right-handed circularly polarized light have the equal magnitudes but opposite signs, and are therefore eliminated entirely by each other. In order to realize such a novel vacuum effect, a scheme to separate the quantum vacuum Berry's phase of one polarized light from another by using the chiral medium fiber is suggested. We think the present study might be the first treatment for the time evolution of vacuum zero-point energy.

Abstract:We investigate the quantum phase transition of an atomic ensemble trapped in a single-mode optical cavity via the geometric phase and quantum Fisher information of an extra probe atom which is injected into the optical cavity and interacts with the cavity field. We also find that the geometric quantum correlation between two probe atoms exhibits a double sudden transition phenomenon and show this double sudden transition phenomenon is closely associated with the quantum phase transition of the atomic ensemble. Furthermore, we propose a theoretical scheme to prolong the frozen time during which the geometric quantum correlation remains constant by applying time-dependent electromagnetic field.

Abstract:The emergence of quantum mechanics and general relativity has transformed our understanding of the natural world significantly. However, integrating these two theories presents immense challenges, and their interplay remains untested. Recent theoretical studies suggest that the single-photon interference covering huge space can effectively probe the interface between quantum mechanics and general relativity. We developed an alternative design using unbalanced Michelson interferometers to address this and validated its feasibility over an 8.4 km free-space channel. Using a high-brightness single-photon source based on quantum dots, we demonstrated single-photon interference along this long-distance baseline. We achieved a phase measurement precision of 16.2 mrad, which satisfied the measurement requirements for a gravitational redshift at the geosynchronous orbit by 5 times the standard deviation. Testing quantum physics in space using optically trapped nanospheres

Abstract:Recent developments in space technology like micro-propulsion systems for drag-free control, thermal shielding, ultra-stable laser sources and stable optical cavities set an ideal platform for quantum optomechanical experiments with optically trapped dielectric spheres. Here, we will provide an overview of the results of recent studies aiming at the realization of the space mission MAQRO to test the foundations of quantum physics in a parameter regime orders of magnitude beyond existing experiments. In particular, we will discuss DECIDE, which is an experiment to prepare and then study a Schrödinger-cat-type state, where a dielectric nanosphere of around 100nm radius is prepared in a superposition of being in two clearly distinct positions at the same time. This superposition leads to double-slit-type interference, and the visibility of the interference pattern will be compared to the predictions of quantum theory. This approach allows for testing for possible deviations from quantum theory as our test objects approach macroscopic dimensions. With DECIDE, it will be possible to distinctly test several prominent theoretical models that predict such deviations, for example: the Diósi-Pensrose model, the continuous-spontaneous-localization model of Ghirardi, Rimini, Weber and Pearle, and the model of Károlyházy.

Abstract:In this Letter, it is claimed that, in addition to the Chiao-Wu geometric phase and optical Aharonov-Carmi geometric phase, there exists a new interesting geometric phase caused by the helicity inversion of photons in the optical fiber composed periodically of left- and right- handed (LRH) media. By making use of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory and the invariant-related unitary transformation formulation, we calculate this geometric phase. It is emphasized that this geometric phase should not been neglected when considering the anomalous refraction on the interfaces between left- and right- handed media.

Abstract:We propose a new thought experiment, based on present-day Quantum Information Technologies, to measure quantum gravitational effects through the Bose-Marletto-Vedral (BMV) effect by revealing the gravitational $t^3$ phase term, its expected relationships with low-energy quantum gravity phenomena and test the equivalence principle of general relativity. The technique here proposed promise to reveal gravitational field fluctuations from the analysis of the stochastic noise associated to an ideal output of a measurement process of a quantum system. To improve the sensitivity we propose to cumulate the effects of the gravitational field fluctuations in time on the outputs of a series of independent measurements acted on entangled states of particles, like in the building of a quantum cryptographic key, and extract from the associated time series the effect of the expected gravitational field fluctuations. In fact, an ideal quantum cryptographic key, built with the sharing of maximally entangled states of particles, is represented by a random sequence of uncorrelated symbols mathematically described by a perfect white noise, a stochastic process with zero mean and without correlation between its values taken at different times. Gravitational field perturbations, including quantum gravity fluctuations and gravitational waves, introduce additional phase terms that decohere the entangled pairs used to build the quantum cryptographic key, with the result of coloring the white noise. We find that this setup, built with massive mesoscopic particles, can potentially reveal the $t^3$ gravitational phase term and thus, the BMV effect.

Abstract:The dynamical Casimir effect is the generation of pairs of real particles or photons from the vacuum as a result of a non-adiabatic change of a system parameter or boundary condition. As opposed to standard parametric amplification where the modulation occurs both in space and in time, this fundamental process requires a pure modulation in time, which makes its detection particularly challenging at optical frequencies. In this paper we experimentally demonstrate a realisation of the optical analogue of the mechanical dynamical Casimir effect in the near-infrared optical regime in a dispersion-oscillating photonic crystal fibre. The experiments are based on the equivalence of the spatial modulation of the fibre core diameter to a pure temporal modulation when this is considered in the co-moving frame of the travelling pump pulse. We provide evidence of optical dynamical Casimir effect by measuring quantum correlations between the spectrally resolved photon pairs. The non-classical nature of the measured light is supported by evidence of anti-bunching photon statistics.

Probing Electromagnetic Nonreciprocity with Quantum Geometry of Photonic States

Abstract:Reciprocal and nonreciprocal effects in dielectric and magnetic materials provide crucial information about the microscopic properties of electrons. However, experimentally distinguishing the two has proven to be challenging, especially when the associated effects are extremely small. To this end, we propose a contact-less detection using a cross-cavity device where a material of interest is placed at its centre. We show that the optical properties of the material, such as Kerr and Faraday rotation, or, birefringence, manifest in the coupling between the cavities' electromagnetic modes and in the shift of their resonant frequencies. By calculating the dynamics of a geometrical photonic state, we formulate a measurement protocol based on the quantum metric and quantum process tomography that isolates the individual components of the material's complex refractive index and minimizes the quantum mechanical Cramér-Rao bound on the variance of the associated parameter estimation. Our approach is expected to be applicable across a broad spectrum of experimental platforms including Fock states in optical cavities, or, coherent states in microwave and THz resonators.

Abstract:Berry's geometric phase naturally appears when a quantum system is driven by an external field whose parameters are slowly and cyclically changed. A variation in the coupling between the system and the external field can also give rise to a geometric phase, even when the field is in the vacuum state or any other Fock state. We demonstrate the appearance of a vacuum-induced Berry phase in an artificial atom, a superconducting transmon, interacting with a single mode of a microwave cavity. As we vary the phase of the interaction, the artificial atom acquires a geometric phase determined by the path traced out in the combined Hilbert space of the atom and the quantum field. Our ability to control this phase opens new possibilities for the geometric manipulation of atom-cavity systems also in the context of quantum information processing.
Testing Quantum Gravity using Pulsed Optomechanical Systems

Abstract:An interesting idea, dating back to Feynman, argues that quantum mechanics may break down for large masses if one entertains the possibility that gravity can be "classical", thereby leading to predictions different from conventional low-energy quantum gravity. Despite the technical difficulty in testing such deviations, a large number of experimental proposals have been put forward due to the high level of fundamental interest. Here, we consider the Schrödinger-Newton (SN) theory and the Correlated Worldline (CWL) theory, and show that they can be distinguished from conventional quantum mechanics, as well as each other, by performing pulsed optomechanics experiments. For CWL specifically we develop a framework resembling the commonly used "Heisenberg-picture" treatment of coupled oscillators, allowing one to perform simple calculations for such systems without delving into the deeper path-integral formalism. We find that discriminating between the theories will be very difficult until experimental control over low frequency quantum optomechanical systems is pushed much further. However, the predicted departures of SN and CWL from quantum mechanics occur at the same scale, so both alternative models could in principle be probed by a single experiment.

Phase estimation via coherent and photon-catalyzed squeezed vacuum states

Abstract:The research focused on enhancing the measurement accuracy through the use of non-Gaussian states has garnered increasing attention. In this study, we propose a scheme to input the coherent state mixed with photon-catalyzed squeezed vacuum state into the Mach-Zender interferometer to enhance phase measurement accuracy. The findings demonstrate that photon catalysis, particularly multi-photon catalysis, can effectively improve the phase sensitivity of parity detection and the quantum Fisher information. Moreover, the situation of photon losses in practical measurement was studied. The results indicate that external dissipation has a greater influence on phase sensitivity than the internal dissipation. Compared to input coherent state mixed with squeezed vacuum state, the utilization of coherent state mixed photon-catalyzed squeezed vacuum state, particularly the mixed multi-photon catalyzed squeezed vacuum state as input, can enhance the phase sensitivity and quantum Fisher information. Furthermore, the phase measurement accuracy can exceed the standard quantum limit, and even surpass the Heisenberg limit. This research is expected to significantly contribute to quantum precision measurement.

Massive Spatial Qubits for Testing Macroscopic Nonclassicality and Casimir Induced Entanglement

Abstract:An open challenge in physics is to expand the frontiers of the validity of quantum mechanics by evidencing nonclassicality of the centre of mass state of a macroscopic object. Yet another equally important task is to evidence the essential nonclassicality of the interactions which act between macroscopic objects. Here we introduce a new tool to meet these challenges: massive spatial qubits. In particular, we show that if two distinct localized states of a mass are used as the $|0\rangle$ and $|1\rangle$ states of a qubit, then we can measure this encoded spatial qubit with a high fidelity in the $\sigma_x, \sigma_y$ and $\sigma_z$ bases simply by measuring its position after different durations of free evolution. We show how this technique can be used to reveal an irreducible nonclassicality through a Bell-inequality violation arising from the entanglement of the centre of mass of a nano-crystal with its spin in a Stern-Gerlach setup. Secondly, we show how our methodology, in conjuction with the Casimir interaction, offers a powerful method to create and certify non-Gaussian entanglement between two neutral nano-objects. Fundamentally, the generation of such an entanglement provides an empirical means for demonstrating an inherent quantumness of the Casimir interaction.

Feasibility analysis of a proposed test of quantum gravity via novel optical magnetometry in xenon

Abstract:We present an analysis of the sensitivity limits of a proposed experimental search for quantum gravity, using a novel approach based on optical magnetometry in the noble gas isotope $^{129}$Xe. The analysis relies on a general uncertainty principle model that is consistent with most formulations of quantum gravity theory, where the canonical uncertainty relations are modified by a leading-order correction term that is linear in momentum. In turn, this correction modifies the magnetic moment of the spin-polarized $^{129}$Xe atoms that are immersed in a magnetic field in the proposed experiment, which results in a velocity-dependent variation of their Larmour frequency, that is detected via two-photon laser spectroscopy. The thermal distribution of atomic velocities, in conjunction with the Doppler effect, is used to scan the interrogating laser over different atomic velocities, and search for a corresponding variation in their Larmor frequencies. We show that the existing bounds on the leading-order quantum gravity correction can be improved by $10^{7}$ with existing technology, where another factor of $10^{2}$ is possible with near-future technical capabilities.

Abstract:The quantum eraser effect exemplifies the distinct properties of quantum mechanics that challenge classical intuition and expose the wave-particle duality of light. This effect has been extensively explored in various experiments; most of these investigations use polarisation to distinguish which path information, and less attention has been paid to the phase structure which is related wavefront of photon. In this study, we introduce a theoretical framework for quantum erasure that focusses on the phase structure and demonstrate it experimentally. In this experiment, we employ a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) where a first-order spiral phase plate (SPP) is integrated into one of its arms. This setup applied orbital angular momentum (OAM) to the photons and established predetermined which-way information. Consequently, the photon demonstrates its particle characteristics, with absence of interference at the MZI's output ports. Utilizing an additional SPP to erase the phase structure from the output photon results in pronounced interference patterns, observable in a post-measurement scenario. This result allows us to include the structure information of the equiphase plane of the light field in quantum erasure. The results challenge the traditional cause-effect relationship in classical physics, given that the subsequent choice of the SPP adheres to a space-like separation.
