A Comparative Study on the Current Application of "ICT+FC" in English Courses at Sino-Foreign Cooperative Universities and Domestic Universities.

Abstract:Through a survey of "College English" courses to 2,037 college students and 54 teachers in 10 domestic and Sino-foreign cooperative universities, this study analyzed and compared 12 dimensions including teaching objectives, teaching modes, application of “ICT (Information and Communications Technology) + FC (Flipped Classroom)”, class hour arrangement, teaching materials and methods, course resources, language environment, teaching effectiveness, and student acceptance. The findings indicate that: (1) Sino-foreign cooperative universities emphasize classroom interaction and after-class practice as key component of their English instruction. EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) courses are particularly popular on campus, with students spending over ten times as much time studying subjects in English as their peers in domestic universities. Their English skills develop rapidly, and their graduation rates and starting salaries are higher. (2) Although English teaching in domestic universities places a high value on the use of online technology, their students are inactive in the online pre-study and participation in flipped classrooms, and generally do not use English outside the classroom. Consequently, their English ability develops slowly, resulting in lower passing rates for postgraduate entrance exams and lower starting salaries in employment. (3) Higher English application skills can significantly increase the pass rate for postgraduate entrance exams and the starting salary for jobs. In order to improve students' proficiency in academic writing and speaking English in domestic universities, this study suggests that more EMI courses should be offered, online English-speaking practice should be strengthened, and teachers’ teaching levels should be increased so that students have more opportunities to use English.
