Abstract:Chitosan-stabilized nano zero-valent iron (CTS-nZVI) prepared by the liquid-phase reduction method has been shown to achieve a good dispersion effect. However, there has been little analysis on the mechanism affecting its stability and transport in saturated porous media. In this paper, settling experiments were conducted to study the stabilization of CTS-nZVI. The transport of CTS-nZVI in saturated porous media at different influencing factors was studied by sand column experiments. The stability mechanism of CTS-nZVI was analyzed from the point of view of colloidal stability by settling experiments and a zeta potential test. The theoretical model of colloidal filtration was applied for the calculation of transport coefficients on the basis of the column experiments data. Considering attachment–detachment effects, a particle transport model was built using HYDRUS-1D software to analyze the transport and spatial distribution of CTS-nZVI in a sand column.

Abstract:Knowledge of the fate and transport of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) in saturated porous media is crucial to the development of in situ remediation technologies. This work systematically compared the retention and transport of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) modified nZVI (CMC-nZVI) and sulfidated nZVI (CMC-S-nZVI) particles in saturated columns packed with quartz sand of various grain sizes and different surface metal oxide coatings. Grain size reduction had an inhibitory effect on the transport of CMC-S-nZVI and CMC-nZVI due to increasing immobile zone deposition and straining in the columns. Metal oxide coatings had minor effect on the transport of CMC-S-nZVI and CMC-nZVI because the sand surface was coated by the free CMC in the suspensions, reducing the electrostatic attraction between the nZVI and surface metal oxides. CMC-S-nZVI displayed greater breakthrough (C/C0 = 0.82-0.90) and higher mass recovery (84.9%-89.3%) than CMC-nZVI (C/C0 = 0.70-0.80 and mass recovery = 70.9%-79.6%, respectively) under the same experimental conditions. A mathematical model based on the advection-dispersion equation simulated the experimental data of nZVI breakthrough curves very well. Findings of this study suggest sulfidation could enhance the transport of CMC-nZVI in saturated porous media with grain and surface heterogeneities, promoting its application in situ remediation.

Abstract:This study investigated the transport behaviors of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and starch stabilized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) through a saturated quartz sand column in the presence of electrolytes, model clays, and natural organic matter (humic acid) through column breakthrough experiments and model simulations. Both stabilizers, CMC and starch, greatly enhanced the breakthrough of MWNTs, with a full breakthrough plateau (C/C0) ranging from 0.69 to 0.90 at ionic strength from 0.3 to 10mM. Between the two stabilizers, CMC was more effective in resisting particle deposition, and thus CMC-stabilized MWNTs were more transportable through the medium. While non-stabilized MWNTs were much less transportable and were vulnerable to electrolyte effects (especially Ca2+), the stabilized counterparts were much more resistant to the coagulation effects of electrolytes. The presence of colloidal clay particles showed contrasting effects on the transport of bare and stabilized MWNTs. The full breakthrough C/C0 of bare MWNTs was suppressed by kaolinite and montmorillonite particles from 0.33 to <0.15 with 5mg/L clay, indicating that the presence of both clays enhanced the aggregation and deposition of MWNTs. However, kaolinite particles facilitated the transport of stabilized-MWNTs, while montmorillonite weakened the breakthrough of stabilized MWNTs. Humic acid had less effect on the mobility of stabilized-MWNTs than that of bare MWNTs. The advection-dispersion transport model incorporated with the filtration theory was able to simulate the breakthrough curves and quantitatively interpret the particle deposition. The results can facilitate our understanding of fate and transport of stabilized carbon nanotubes in the environment.
CFD-DEM Study on Transport and Retention Behaviors of Nzvi-Clay Colloids in Porous Media.

Abstract:Transportation process of nano scale zero valent iron (nZVI) in clay-rich soils is complicated and crucial for in -situ remediation of contaminated sites. A coupled computational fluid dynamic and discrete element method (CFD-DEM) was used to investigate the interplays of repulsive and attractive forces and the injection velocity of this process. The screened Coulomb's law was used to represent the electrostatic interaction, and surface energy density was introduced to represent the effects of the van der Waals interaction. A phase diagram was con-structed to describe the interplay between injection velocity and repulsive force (in terms of charge of colloids). Under the boundary and initial conditions in this study, clogging formed at low repulsive force (colloidal charge =-1 x10-15 C), where increment of injection velocity (from 0.002 m/s to 0.02 m/s) cannot prevent clogging, as in the case of bare nZVI transportation with limited mobility; On the other hand, excessive repulsive force (charge =-4 x10-14 C) is detrimental to nZVI-clay transportation due to repulsion from the concentrated col-loids in pore throats, a phenomenon as in the overuse of stabilizers and was defined as the "membrane repulsion effect" in this study. At moderate charge (-1 x10-14 C), injection velocity increment induced clogging due to aggregates formed at the windward of cylinder and accumulated at the pore throats.
Mobility of Cellulose Nanocrystals in Porous Media: Effects of Ionic Strength, Iron Oxides, and Soil Colloids

Abstract:Understanding the dispersivity and migration of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in porous media is important for exploring their potential for soil and water remediation. In this study, a series of saturated column experiments were conducted to investigate the coupled effects of ionic strength, iron oxides (hematite), and soil colloids on the transport of CNCs through quartz sand and natural soils (red earth and brown earth). Results showed that CNCs had high mobility in oxide-free sand and that iron oxide coating reduced the mobility of CNCs. An analysis of Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek interactions indicated that CNCs exhibited a deep primary minimum, nonexistent maximum repulsion and secondary minimum on hematite-coated sand, favorable for the attachment of CNCs. The maximum effluent percentage of CNCs was 96% in natural soils at 5 mM, but this value decreased to 4% at 50 mM. Soil colloids facilitated the transport of CNCs in brown earth with larger effect at higher ionic strength. The ionic strength effect was larger in natural soils than sand and in red earth than brown earth. The study showed that CNCs can travel 0.2 m to 72 m in porous media, depending on soil properties, solution chemistry, and soil colloids.

Transport and Retention of Xanthan Gum-Stabilized Microscale Zero-Valent Iron Particles in Saturated Porous Media.

Abstract:Microscale zero valent iron (mZVI) is a promising material for in-situ contaminated groundwater remediation. However, its usefulness has been usually inhibited by mZVI particles' low mobility in saturated porous media for sedimentation and deposition. In our study, laboratory experiments, including sedimentation studies, rheological measurements and transport tests, were conducted to investigate the feasibility of xanthan gum (XG) being used as a coating agent for mZVI particle stabilization. In addition, the effects of XG concentration, flow rate, grain diameter and water chemistry on XG-coated mZVI (XG-mZVI) particle mobility were explored by analyzing its breakthrough curves and retention profiles. It was demonstrated that XG worked efficiently to enhance the suspension stability. and mobility of mZVI particles through the porous media as a shear thinning fluid, especially at a higher concentration level (3 g/L). The results of the column study showed that the mobility of XG-mZVI particles increased with an increasing flow rate and larger grain diameter. At the highest flow rate (2.30 x 10(-3) m/s) within the coarsest porous media (0.8-1.2 mm), 86.52% of the XG-mZVI flowed through the column. At the lowest flow rate (0.97 x 10(-4) m/s) within the finest porous media (0.3 -0.6 mm), the retention was dramatically strengthened, with only 48.22% of the particles flowing through the column. The XG-mZVI particles appeared to be easily trapped at the beginning of the column especially at a low flow rate. In terms of two representative water chemistry parameters (ion strength and pH value), no significant influence on XG-mZVI particle mobility was observed. The experimental results suggested that straining was the primary mechanism of XG-mZVI retention under saturated condition. Given the above results, the specific site-related conditions should be taken into consideration for the design of a successful delivery system to achieve a compromise between maximizing the radius of influence of the injection and minimizing the injection pressure. Colloid-Facilitated Solute Transport In Variably Saturated Porous Media: Numerical Model And Experimental Verification

Abstract:Strongly sorbing chemicals (e. g., heavy metals, radionuclides, pharmaceuticals, and explosives) in porous media are associated predominantly with the solid phase, which is commonly assumed to be stationary. However, recent field- and laboratory-scale observations have shown that in the presence of mobile colloidal particles (e.g., microbes, humic substances, clays, and metal oxides), colloids can act as pollutant carriers and thus provide a rapid transport pathway for strongly sorbing contaminants. To address this problem, we developed a one-dimensional numerical model based on the HYDRUS-1D software package that incorporates mechanisms associated with colloid and colloid-facilitated solute transport in variably saturated porous media. The model accounts for transient variably saturated water flow, and for both colloid and solute movement due to advection, diffusion, and dispersion, as well as for solute movement facilitated by colloid transport. The colloid transport module additionally considers the processes of attachment/detachment to/from the solid phase and/or the air-water interface, straining, and/or size exclusion. Various blocking and depth dependent functions can be used to modify the attachment and straining coefficients. The solute transport module uses the concept of two-site sorption to describe nonequilibrium adsorption-desorption reactions to the solid phase. The module further assumes that contaminants can be sorbed onto surfaces of both deposited and mobile colloids, fully accounting for the dynamics of colloid movement between different phases. Application of the model is demonstrated using selected experimental data from published saturated column experiments, conducted to investigate the transport of Cd in the presence of Bacillus subtilis spores in alluvial gravel aquifer media. Numerical results simulating bacteria transport, as well as the bacteria-facilitated Cd transport, are compared with experimental results. A sensitivity analysis of the model to various parameters is also presented.
Enhanced Transport of Polyelectrolyte Stabilized Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron (nzvi) in Porous Media

Abstract:Laboratory experiments including column and batch sedimentation studies were conducted to investigate the transport of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) particles stabilized by three polyelectrolytes: polyvinyl alcohol-co-vinyl acetate-co-itaconic acid (PV3A), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and soy proteins. Results of the continuous packed column study suggest that the both PV3A and PAA can increase nZVI mobility by reducing particle size and generating negatively charged surfaces of nZVI. PV3A stabilized nZVI has the best transport performance among the three materials. It was found that approximately 100% of nZVI flowed through the column. Retardation of nZVI is observed in all tests. Due to the large surface area of nZVI, large amounts of polyelectrolytes are often needed. For example, soy proteins exhibited an excellent stabilization capability only at the dose over 30% of nZVI mass. Approximately 57% of nZVI remained in the column when nZVI was stabilized with PAA at the dosage of 50%. Results suggest that nZVI may be prepared with tunable travel distance to form an iron reactive zone for the in situ remediation.

Transport of carboxyl-functionalized carbon black nanoparticles in saturated porous media: Column experiments and model analyses

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the transport behavior of carboxyl-functionalized carbon black nanoparticles (CBNPs) in porous media including quartz sand, iron oxide-coated sand (IOCS), and aluminum oxide-coated sand (AOCS). Two sets of column experiments were performed under saturated flow conditions for potassium chloride (KCl), a conservative tracer, and CBNPs. Breakthrough curves were analyzed to obtain mass recovery and one-dimensional transport model parameters. The first set of experiments was conducted to examine the effects of metal (Fe, Al) oxides and flow rate (0.25 and 0.5 mL min(-1)) on the transport of CBNPs suspended in deionized water. The results showed that the mass recovery of CBNPs in quartz sand (flow rate=0.5 mL min(-1)) was 83.1%, whereas no breakthrough of CBNPs (mass recovery=0%) was observed in IOCS and AOCS at the same flow rate, indicating that metal (Fe, Al) oxides can play a significant role in the attachment of CBNPs to porous media. In addition, the mass recovery of CBNPs in quartz sand decreased to 76.1% as the flow rate decreased to 0.25 mL min(-1). Interaction energy profiles for CBNP-porous media were calculated using DLVO theory for sphere-plate geometry, demonstrating that the interaction energy for CBNP-quartz sand was repulsive, whereas the interaction energies for CBNP-IOCS and CBNP-AOCS were attractive with no energy barriers. The second set of experiments was conducted in quartz sand to observe the effect of ionic strength (NaCl=0.1 and 1.0mM; CaCl2=0.01 and 0.1mM) and pH (pH=4.5 and 5.4) on the transport of CBNPs suspended in electrolyte. The results showed that the mass recoveries of CBNPs in NaCl=0.1 and 1.0mM were 65.3 and 6.4%, respectively. The mass recoveries of CBNPs in CaCl2=0.01 and 0.1mM were 81.6 and 6.3%, respectively. These results demonstrated that CBNP attachment to quartz sand can be enhanced by increasing the electrolyte concentration. Interaction energy profiles demonstrated that the interaction energy profile for CBNP-quartz sand was compressed and that the energy barrier decreased as the electrolyte concentration increased. Furthermore, the mass recovery of CBNPs in the presence of divalent ions (CaCl2=0.1 mM) was far lower than that in the presence of monovalent ions (NaCl=0.1 mM), demonstrating a much stronger effect of Ca(2+) than Na(+) on CBNP transport. Mass recovery of CBNPs at pH 4.5 was 55.6%, which was lower than that (83.1%) at pH 5.4, indicating that CBNP attachment to quartz sand can be enhanced by decreasing the pH. The sticking efficiencies (α) calculated from the mass recovery by colloid filtration theory were in the range from 2.1×10(-2) to 4.5×10(-1), which were far greater than the values (2.56×10(-6)-3.33×10(-2)) of theoretical sticking efficiencies (αtheory) calculated from the DLVO energy by the Maxwell model.
Transport of CMC Modified Zero-Valent Iron Particles in Quartz Sand

Abstract:The dispersion mechanism of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) modified zero-valent iron (ZVI) particles in quartz sand was studied. Influences of porous medium,flow rate on transport were also investigated. The results showed that dispersion mechanism of CMC modified ZVI particles followed the DLVO model. Potential barrier increment brought by electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance had positive correlation with CMC concentration,promoting the dispersion of ZVI. Zero valent iron particles modified with 500% CMC (mass ratio of CMC to ZVI) were fully dispersed as observed from SEM and light absorbance decreased by 31% in 90 minutes. Influenced by interaction energy between ZVI and quartz sand,filling medium adsorption sites and shear force,transport ability had positive correlation with CMC dosage,and increased with bigger medium size and higher fluid velocity.

Abstract:The fate of nano zerovalent iron (nZVI) during subsurface injection was examined using carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) stabilized nZVI in a very large three-dimensional physical model aquifer with detailed monitoring using multiple, complementary detection methods. A fluorescein tracer test in the aquifer plus laboratory column data suggested that the very-aggressive flow conditions necessary to achieve 2.5 m of nZVI transport could be obtained using a hydraulically constrained flow path between injection and extraction wells. However, total unoxidized nZVI was transported only about 1 m and <2% of the injected nZVI concentration reached that distance. The experimental data also indicated that groundwater flow changed during injection, likely due to hydrogen bubble formation, which diverted the nZVI away from the targeted flow path. The leading edge of the iron plume became fully oxidized during transport. However, within the plume, oxidation of nZVI decreased in a fashion consistent with progressive depletion of aquifer "reductant demand". To directly quantify the extent of nZVI transport, a spectrophotometric method was developed, and the results indicated that deployment of unoxidized nZVI for groundwater remediation will likely be difficult.

Abstract:The transport of Pb(II) or Cd(II) in subsurface has been studied in the literature; however; their co-transport in porous media in presence of colloids has not been clearly understood. In this work, a series of column experiments were conducted to study Pb(II) and Cd(II) co-transport in saturated porous media under various experimental conditions with different combination of colloidal solution (montmorillonite colloid, manual loessial soil colloid and humic acid), flow rate (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 ml min−1) and sand grain size (0.4–0.8mm and 0.8–2.0mm). The results showed that increase of flow rate and grain size promoted the mobility of Pb(II) and Cd(II), furthermore, the presences of mobile colloids also enhanced the mobility of the two heavy metals, meanwhile, Cd(II) showed higher mobility than Pb(II) in the columns. Findings from this work enhanced current understanding of the competitive transport and colloid-facilitated transport of heavy metals in saturated porous media.
Determining the Transport Behaviors of Biochar Nano-Particles in Porous Media

Abstract:The transport of biochar nano-particles (BCNPs) influenced by complex physicochemical factors is systematically investigated through the transport experiments combined with the interfacial chemistry theory and numerical modeling methods. The two-dimensional (2D) distributions of Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) interaction energy are obtained and a new indicator of DLVO barrier (xi(DB)) is proposed to identify the inflection point related to agglomeration and deposition of BCNPs. Results suggest the mobility of BCNPs in porous media decreases with ionic strength, and the inhibitory effect of divalent cations on BCNPs transport is stronger than that of monovalent cations. However, the mobility of BCNPs is enhanced by the increases in pH and humic acid concentrations. In addition, the higher the concentration of BCNPs, the higher the retention of BCNPs in saturated porous media. The mobility of BCNPs is enhanced under the conditions of high flow velocity. A combined value of DLVO energy barriers is calculated and results suggest the decision coefficient (R-2) decreases with the fraction of DLVO energy barrier of BCNPs-BCNPs, indicating that the interaction between BCNPs and quartz sand (QS) plays a major role in the transport of BCNPs in porous media. Afterward, the continuous values of two-site kinetic transport parameters of BCNPs in porous media as a function of hydrochemical factors can be predicted by the combined value of DLVO energy barriers. Simultaneously, the critical hydrochemical conditions related to BCNPs mobility can be quantitatively determined by a combination of column experiment, DLVO interaction energy and transport model. The critical hydrochemical conditions are IS(Na+)= 29.3-29.4 mM, IS(Ca2+)= 2.50-2.55 mM, pH= 3.36-3.37, HA concentration= 3.68-5.84 mgL-1. The findings are important for understanding the transport behavior and mechanism of BCNPs in porous media, and accurate prediction and assessment of BCNPs transport patterns in soil-groundwater systems.(c) 2023 Institution of Chemical Engineers. Abstract:Mercury (Hg) is one of the most pervasive and bio-accumulative metals in the environment. Yet, effective in situ remediation technologies have been lacking. This study investigated the effectiveness of a class of soil-deliverable FeS nanoparticles for in situ immobilization of Hg in two field-contaminated soils from a New Jersey site and one sediment from an Alabama site. The nanoparticles were prepared using sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a stabilizer. Transmission electron microscopy measurements revealed a particle size of 34 . 3 +/- 8 . 3 nm (standard deviation), whereas dynamic light scattering gave a hydrodynamic diameter of 222 . 5 +/- 3 . 2 nm. Batch tests showed that at an FeS-to-Hg molar ratio of 28: 1-118: 1, the nanoparticles reduced water-leachable Hg by 79%-96% and the TCLP (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure) based leachability by 26%-96%. Column breakthrough tests indicated that the nanoparticles were deliverable in the sediment/soil columns under moderate injection pressure. However, once the external pressure was removed, the delivered nanoparticles remained virtually mobile under typical groundwater flow conditions. When the Hg-contaminated soil and sediment were treated with 52-95 pore volumes of a 500 mg l(-1) FeS nanoparticle suspension, water-leachable Hg was reduced by 90%-93% and TCLP-leachable Hg was reduced by 65%-91%. The results warrant further field demonstration of this promising in situ remediation technology.

Abstract:CQDs-doped TiO2 (C-TiO2) has drawn increased attention in recent because of its excellent catalytic performance. Understanding the transport of C-TiO2 in porous media is necessary for evaluating the environmental process of this new nanomaterial. Column experiments were used in this study to investigate ionic strength (IS), dissolved organic matter (DOM) and sand grain size on the transport of C-TiO2. The mobility of C-TiO2 was inhibited by the increased IS and decreased sand grain size, but was promoted by the increased DOM concentration. The promotion efficiency of DOM ranked as humic acid (HA) > alginate (Alg) > bovine serum albumin (BSA), which was in the same order as their ability to change surface charges. The micromodels of pore network were prepared via 3D printing to further reveal the deposition mechanisms and spatial/temporal distribution of C-TiO2 in porous space. C-TiO2 mainly attached to the upstream region of collectors because of interception. The collector ripening was observed after long-time deposition. The existence of DOM caused visible decrease of C-TiO2 deposition in the pore network. HA caused the most remarkable reduce of deposition in the three types of DOM, which was consistent with the column experiment results. This research is helpful to predict the transport of C-TiO2 in natural porous media.

Abstract:The mobility of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) will greatly affect its practical application as a remediation material for contaminated groundwater. One-dimensional (1D) column tests are commonly used in previous work to study its migration behavior, but the two-dimensional (2D) test is still very limited. This study reports a novel research system to study the 2D transport and retention behavior of colloids and solutes, which includes a 2D model test setup and the corresponding image analysis method. The transport behaviors of methyl orange (MO), nZVI, and phosphate-loaded nZVI (PnZVI) are studied using this system. The results show that the research system can reasonably describe the tempo-spatial concentration distribution of colloids and solutes. After phosphate adsorption, the mobility of nZVI is enhanced due to the increase in negative surface charge, which implies a potential environmental risk of nZVI to facilitate contaminant transport. The migration of PnZVI is not significantly influenced by its density, which is faster than MO in the longitudinal direction. The range of the plume of PnZVI in the longitudinal direction is larger than that of MO, which implies that PnZVI has a stronger longitudinal dispersion than MO.

Abstract:Engineered nanoporous particles are an important class of nano-structured materials that can be functionalized in their internal surfaces for various applications including groundwater contaminant sequestration. This paper reported a study of transport and retention of engineered nanoporous silicate particles (ENSPs) that are designed for treatment and remediation of contaminants such as uranium in groundwater and sediments. The transport and retention of ENSPs were investigated under variable particle concentrations and dynamic flow conditions in a synthetic groundwater that mimics field groundwater chemical composition. The dynamic flow condition was achieved using a flow-interruption (stop-flow) approach with variable stop-flow durations to explore particle retention and release kinetics in saturated porous media. The results showed that the ENSPs transport was strongly affected by the particle concentrations and dynamic flows. The experimental data were used to evaluate the applicability of various kinetic models that were developed for colloidal particle retention and release in describing ENSPs transport. Both experimental and modeling results indicated that dynamic groundwater flow condition is an important parameter to be considered in exploring and modeling engineered particle transport in subsurface porous media.

Abstract:Ball-milled biochar (BMBC) is a typical engineering material that has promising application prospects in remediating contaminated soil and water. It is fundamental to rate the transport behaviors of BMBC in the underground environment before extensive use. In this study, the effects of the ubiquitous cations (Na+, Mg2+, and Al3+) and model organic matter (humic acid) on the transport of BMBC were investigated using laboratory column experiments. The results demonstrated the facilitated effect of HA on the transport of BMBC due to the negatively charged surface and steric effect under neutral conditions. HA and ionic strength manifested an antagonistic effect on the transport of BMBC, where the presence of one could weaken the effect from the other. We also found the charge reversal of the BMBC surface in the presence of Mg2+, thus enhancing the deposition of BMBC onto the medium surface. On the other hand, the charge reversal from Al3+-coupled acid conditions led to the restabilization and transport of BMBC in porous media. Therefore, the rational usage of BMBC is indispensable and more attention should be paid to the composition and change in underground water that might facilitate the transport of BMBC and thus lead to negative environmental implications.

Abstract:The rapid aggregation and subsequent deposition of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) cause extremely low mobility in porous media. This study fabricated novel hollow mesoporous silica (HMS) supported nZVIs (HMS-nZVIs) by decorating spherical nZVI on HMS surfaces in a monolayer and examined the stability and transport of the HMS-nZVIs in porous media. Results show that the stability of the HMS-nZVIs was similar to that of HMSs, which was much greater than that of nZVIs due to increased electrostatic repulsion. The HMS-nZVIs showed greater mobility in porous media even than HMSs. This is because while decorating of nZVIs on the HMS surfaces reduced repulsive energy barrier, the nZVIs reduced the primary minimum depth and accordingly the adhesive force, causing less deposition of the HMS-nZVIs on the collector surfaces compared to HMSs. Increasing the loading concentration of nZVIs led to the aggregation of nZVIs on HMS surfaces, which increased the sizes of HMS-nZVIs and the retention of HMS-nZVIs in porous media through straining. The great mobility of the HMS-nZVIs revealed by this study shows the potential of using hollow particles as vehicles for delivery of nZVIs for in situ soil and groundwater remediation.
