Abstract:It is well known that hysteresis often exists and failures may occur in practical actuators during system operation. The compensation for uncertainties caused by unknown hysteresis and unknown failures is an important problem in ensuring system stability and performances. However, available results based on adaptive approaches to address such a problem are still very limited. In this paper, an adaptive tracking control scheme is proposed to solve such a problem. Simulation results also illustrate the effectiveness of the control scheme. © 2011 IEEE.
Robust Adaptive Failure Compensation of Hysteretic Actuators for a Class of Uncertain Nonlinear Systems.

Abstract:Hysteresis exists in a wide range of physical actuators. Furthermore, such actuators may be subject to failures or faults which are often uncertain in time, value and pattern during system operation. However, the available results based on adaptive approaches to compensate for unknown failures of hysteretic actuators are very limited. The work of this note is aimed at addressing such a problem by considering controlling a class of strict feedback systems. A scheme designing smooth adaptive control is proposed for this purpose. It is shown that the designed adaptive controller can ensure all signals are bounded and the tracking error asymptotically approaches a pre-defined bound, no matter whether the hysteretic actuators operate in normal or faulty modes.

Abstract:By using the health management technology the actuators can be timely responded to the fault situation so that it should be used the right approach to solve and prevent the occurrence of the fault and improve the system reliability. In this paper a method of the actuator health management is proposed by using neural network pattern recognition technology in the flight control system. Firstly, a particular actuator fault parameters model is selected. Then, the fault feature extraction, health situation assessment and remaining life prediction are analyzed by applying the BP neural network. The simulation results demonstrate the proposed method is effective to health monitoring for the actuators. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Actuator fault might occur during quadrotor helicopter’s flight. It is a demand to detect actuator fault in real-time. An actuator fault detection method based on extreme learning machine is proposed. An extreme learning machine network is used to approximate the dynamic of the actuator, which is trained by the actuator’s inputs, outputs, and states. The dynamic of the actuator is mapped to the output matrix of the proposed extreme learning machine network. By monitoring the norm of the output matrix, the dynamic of the actuator is supervised, and system fault can be detected. The proposed extreme learning machine network is tested on a self-made experimental propeller system platform, and results show that the method is sensitive and effective on both major and minor fault circumstances.

Abstract:Condition-based hydraulic cylinder maintenance necessitates quantitative fault diagnostics. However, existing methods are characterized by either qualitative or limited quantitative capabilities. In this paper, a quantitative fault diagnostic method using a particle filter for hydraulic cylinders is proposed. The problem of quantitative fault diagnostics is formally formulated in a stochastic framework to assess the health/fault state, and an architecture based on joint state-parameter estimation is proposed. Through the establishment and analysis of a nonlinear dynamic model of the hydraulic cylinder, the impact of time-varying parameters on the state variables is revealed. Three fault modes of the cylinder, including friction, internal leakage, and external leakage, are theoretically identified. The proposed method allows for a simultaneous quantitative diagnosis of these three fault modes. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using meticulously designed experiments. The results demonstrate that the mean absolute percentage errors in the parameter estimations are below 9% (accuracy exceeding 91%), thus validating its feasibility and effectiveness.

Abstract:In this paper a fault diagnosis approach for robotic manipulators, subject to faults of the joints driving systems, is developed. A model-based diagnostic observer is adopted to detect, isolate and identify failures. Compensation of unknown dynamics, uncertainties and disturbances is achieved through the adoption of a class of neural interpolators, the support vector machines and trained off-line. Interpolation of unknown faults is performed by adopting an on-line neural interpolator based on radial basis functions, whose weights are adaptively tuned on-line. The effectiveness of the approach is experimentally tested on an industrial robot manipulator.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel ellipsoid‐based framework for fault estimation and remaining useful life prognosis is presented. The fault is considered to be a slow‐changing fault caused by actuator performance degradation. The proposed framework is divided into three steps: First, the actuator fault interval estimation is determined by combining observer design with ellipsoidal analysis. The fault estimation results allow to evaluate the system's current health condition and predict the remaining useful life based on the performance degeneration model. Since the model parameters are constantly changing, an ellipsoid‐based extended Kalman filter is presented to estimate the parameters via the fault estimation results. Specially, a trace optimization method is proposed to design the filter gain matrix, which offers high computational efficiency. Finally, the future degradation states are predicted via the latest parameters until the failure thresholds are reached, which determines the remaining useful life interval prediction results. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify the viability and validity of the presented approach.

Abstract:Self-repairing aircraft flight control systems with multiple control surfaces need to quickly and accurately evaluate actuator fault information.The multiple model adaptive estimation method(MMAE),a fault detection and diagnosis approach,was used to develop a strong-tracking multiple model adaptive estimator(STMMAE) which combines multiple models with a strong tracking filter.This approach corrects the disadvantages of the MMAE method and has good robustness and adaptability.This method can efficiently detect faults in nonlinear systems for on-line fault detection and accurate estimates of the fault value.Simulations show that this method is effective in various fault scenarios.

Abstract:Fault detection of axial piston pumps is of great significance to improve the reliability and life of fluid power systems. However, it is difficult to detect multiple faults on key lubricating interfaces due to the liquid-solid coupling. This paper proposes a fault detection strategy of the three key lubricating interfaces based on the one against all (OAA) and spare support vector machine (SSVM). The parameter sparsity is imposed to deal with the performance degradation of OAA-SVM model as a result of the imbalanced dataset. Experimental investigations on the benchmark dataset and axial piston pumps are carried out. Results show that the OAA-SSVM model accuracies of the benchmark dataset and axial piston pump are 96.67% and 95.83%, respectively, which are better than the OAA-SVM model. The recall rates of the bearing fault 3 and pump fault 2 can decrease by 13.33% and 10.00%, respectively. And the false discovery rates of the normal bearing and normal pump can be reduced by up to 7.58% and 6.24%, respectively. Besides, the OAA-SSVM model can improve the feature sparsity. Results show that the proposed method is effective in detecting multiple faults of axial piston pumps.
Data-Driven Optimal Fault-Tolerant Control for Unknown Linear Systems

Abstract:In this paper, optimal fault-tolerant control is investigated for a class of unknown linear systems with multiple actuators subject to actuator faults. To tackle the problem of actuator faults and maintain the nearly optimal systems performance, a novel optimal fault-tolerant control strategy is proposed on account of the real system information, without the necessity of complete knowledge of system matrices. It consists of a switching function method, a novel adaptive control law and an optimal control policy. By optimizing a cost function, an optimal adaptive controller is found to stabilize the system with the approximate dynamic programming technique. The switching function related to the optimal control policy is implemented to locate and reduce the impact of the faulty actuators automatically. Furthermore, all the signals of the closed-loop system are ensured to be uniformly bounded and the stability analysis is rigidly given. Finally, some simulation studies are provided to verify the merits of the proposed method.

Abstract:A rotary actuator that employs hydraulic oil as the power source has a direct rotary structure. It is an important structure and has been widely utilized in aircrafts and ships because of its advantages, including large torque/quality ratio, simple compact structure, and fast dynamic response. Huge damage may be caused when a rotary actuator breaks down during operation. However, only a few studies have focused on fault detection and performance assessment for rotary actuators. In this study, a method that detects the fault in and assesses the performance of the rotary actuator based on residual analysis is proposed. The data in normal state are utilized to build an observer with two radial basis function (RBF) neural networks. One RBF neural network is employed to estimate the expected output required to generate the residuals. The self-adaptive thresholds are obtained through the other RBF neural network. The residual is then inputted into the self-organizing mapping neural network trained by the residual values in normal state to normalize the performance of the rotary actuator into confidences values between 0 and 1. Finally, the detection and assessment of two typical faults of the rotary actuator are simulated. Results verify the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:This article proposes a fault diagnosis scheme for the fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control of a robotic arm actuator based on an adaptive fault observer. The research focuses on the dynamic model of the robotic arm. In case of an actuator fault, an adaptive fault observer is designed to obtain fault information, complete fault detection and fault estimation, and then utilize the Lyapunov stability theorem to analyze the stability of the observation error system. Based on this analysis, a model predictive fault-tolerant controller is designed to enable the robotic arm to accurately follow the desired trajectory. The effectiveness of the algorithm is then verified through simulation examples.

Abstract:The electro-hydrostatic actuator (EHA) is a promising actuating apparatus used in flight control systems for more electric aircraft (MEA) due to its high power density and low maintenance. Since the reliability of the system decreases with increasing complexity, fault detection is becoming increasingly important. In this paper, an adaptive filter was designed based on a normalized least mean square (NLMS) algorithm, which could identify the resistance of the motor windings online to detect electrical faults in the EHA. Additionally, based on the analytical relationship between rotational speed and displacement, a rotational speed estimation method was designed. By comparing the actual rotational speed with the estimated one, hydraulic faults could be detected. To verify the efficacy of the aforementioned method, software was applied for the modeling and simulations, which included fault injection and detection. On this basis, an experimental platform was built and then subjected to a series of validation experiments. The results indicate that the fault detection method has the potential to detect electrical and hydraulic faults in an EHA.

Abstract:Substantial damage may occur when a rotary actuator fails during operation. Therefore, effective fault diagnosis of a rotary actuator is crucial to ensuring the safety of the device. However, only a few studies on fault detection, fault isolation, and performance assessment have focused on rotary actuators. In this study, fault detection and fault isolation processes were implemented by designing two observers based on a neural network, and a method that assesses the performance of the rotary actuator is proposed. First, two observers are established according to the structure of the rotary actuator. Data in their normal state are used to train the neural networks. Second, a radial basis function (RBF) neural network is employed to estimate the expected output of the system to generate residuals, and self-adaptive thresholds are obtained through another RBF neural network in each observer. The information on the observers is applied for fault isolation. Third, the residual is input into the self-organizing mapping neural network trained by the residual values in their normal state to normalize the performance of the rotary actuator into confidence values between 0 and 1. Finally, the detection and assessment of two typical faults in a rotary actuator were simulated. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is able to assess the performance of rotary actuator and detect faults suitably.

Abstract:In this paper, a fault diagnosis method of a heterogeneous multi-agent is proposed that realizes the rapid and accurate fault diagnosis of a redundant multi-type actuation system of large aircraft. Firstly, the multi-agent model of a large aircraft actuation system is established, the composition of the actuation system and the relationship between each multi-agent are clarified and three different types of actuator mathematical models are established. Secondly, a fault detection and isolation (FDI) model is established and transformed into an optimization problem according to different performance index requirements. Aiming at the optimization problem, combined with the principle of linear matrix inequality (LMI), the fault diagnosis algorithm of a heterogeneous multi-agent system is designed. Moreover, the threshold judgment method based on the error signal is presented. Finally, the three actuator models of the aileron actuation system of large aircraft are combined to complete the fault diagnosis of a heterogeneous multi-agent system under the given model interference and model fault. The obtained results demonstrate and validate that the proposed method can accurately and effectively diagnose the faults of the actuator and its associated actuators.

Abstract:Aileron actuators are pivotal components for aircraft flight control system. Thus, the fault diagnosis of aileron actuators is vital in the enhancement of the reliability and fault tolerant capability. This paper presents an aileron actuator fault diagnosis approach combining principal component analysis (PCA), grid search (GS), 10-fold cross validation (CV), and one-versus-one support vector machine (SVM). This method is referred to as PGC-SVM and utilizes the direct drive valve input, force motor current, and displacement feedback signal to realize fault detection and location. First, several common faults of aileron actuators, which include force motor coil break, sensor coil break, cylinder leakage, and amplifier gain reduction, are extracted from the fault quadrantal diagram; the corresponding fault mechanisms are analyzed. Second, the data feature extraction is performed with dimension reduction using PCA. Finally, the GS and CV algorithms are employed to train a one-versus-one SVM for fault classification, thus obtaining the optimal model parameters and assuring the generalization of the trained SVM, respectively. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach, four types of faults are introduced into the simulation model established by AMESim and Simulink. The results demonstrate its desirable diagnostic performance which outperforms that of the traditional SVM by comparison.
Active Diagnosis of Incipient Actuator Faults for Stochastic Systems

Abstract:In this article, the active diagnosis problem of incipient actuator faults is investigated for a class of discrete-time stochastic systems. The input is exclusively designed for diagnosis purposes to optimally discriminate among multiple mode hypotheses that correspond to the multiple incipient actuator fault scenarios. Due to infeasibility of expressing the misdiagnosis probability in the closed form, its new upper bound is derived as an alternative. It is proven that this upper bound is a tighter bound on the misdiagnosis probability for incipient actuator faults, compared with the widely used Bhattacharyya upper bound. For computation complexity reduction and diagnosis performance improvement purposes, a novel input design criterion is constructed for active fault diagnosis (AFD) based on the derived upper bound, under which the input design problem can be solved to global optimality. By injecting the optimal input, to fully utilize the diagnostically relevant information in the output data so as to draw a reliable diagnosis conclusion, the resulting measurement output sequence is exploited to make the AFD decision on the basis of the minimum misdiagnosis probability decision rule. Finally, experimental results on a four-tank system illustrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed AFD approach.

Abstract:Predictive Maintenance approaches are gaining popularity in the new Industry 4.0 paradigm as they offer superior benefits in terms of time and money savings when it is required to assess the current working capabilities of operating equipment to carefully schedule maintenance operations. This work deals with a control allocation strategy inspired by Model Predictive Control ideas and able to address the loss of effectiveness of actuating equipment arising from their continuous usage. The scheme here presented comprises two modules: a prognostic unit for monitoring the reliability conditions of the actuators and a re-configurable control allocation block that operates according to the deterioration degree of the present actuators. The benefits of the proposed approach are testified by the numerical simulations carried out on both an unstable system and a tanks network. In particular, it can be observed that the proposed method is capable of suggesting a time-window for maintenance interventions that prevents either stability or feasibility issues. Note to Practitioners—Nowadays, in the viewpoint of financial and technical issues in the industries, the predictive maintenance (PM) plays the main and important subject. In the variety of industries, such as oil, gas, petrochemical, power plant, or transmission and distribution infrastructures, which are using the actuators and pipelines, predictive maintenance (PM) is a critical topic to prevent the unwanted shutdown and unrequired maintenance costs. However, most PM research and solutions have paid attention mainly to the estimation of the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of critical devices (i.e., pipelines) only. On the contrary, in this work we focus on the possibility of influencing the RUL by properly acting on the actuators’ effort. The proposed method consists in a dual-mode fault-tolerant control allocation technique developed for discrete-time systems subject to input saturation. The proposed predictive model-based control solution can be considered as a simple, structural and practical approach to minimize the maintenance cost and reliability by decreasing the number of maintenance interventions and optimizing the time for their repairing, by preventing or decreasing the probability of occurrence of unwanted failures events. The main limitation in this approach is that it assumes the RUL of the critical assets under investigation known. As a future research, this work will be extended to include a related RUL estimator hinging on online data.
