Abstract:A 200MHz RFQ was designed to accelerate proton beam to over 2.0MeV. A four-rod type structure with mini-vanes was adopted and a 200MHz 400kW tetrode amplifier will be used as its RF power source. The basic consideration was presented. The design of particle dynamics was performed with PARMTEQM and the preliminary results were given.

Abstract:Superconducting (SC) radio-frequency quadrupoles (RFQs) have exhibited outstanding performance in transmitting and accelerating high-current continuous-wave (CW) ion beams. They can complete beam acceleration at a much higher gradient and with much lower power consumption compared with normal conducting (NC) RFQs. In this study, we introduce a novel SC RFQ scheme operating at 162.5 MHz to accelerate 10 mA proton beams from 30 keV to 2.5 MeV. It will be used as a crucial component for a neutron source dedicated to Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) and neutron imaging projects. For efficient transmission of proton beams, we selected a relatively high inter-vane voltage of 240 kV, and the beam dynamics design yielded satisfactory results. Subsequently, RF design and multi-physics analysis were carried out to validate the reliability of the design. A 30-centimeter-long cavity was specifically designed for the vertical test and allowed for a thorough evaluation of the performance of the SC RFQ after post-treatments. Additionally, the tuning design of the 30 cm cavity was also carried out.

Abstract:This paper presents the design of a high-intensity 10 mA deuteron RFQ accelerator that generates a 2.1 MeV beam in a continuous wave (CW) mode. The operation frequency is 162.5 MHz. The results of beam dynamics simulations demonstrate excellent output beam quality, achieving a transmission efficiency of 98.63%. The beam tracking results indicate that the RFQ is capable of managing errors within reasonable tolerances. In addition, the RF electromagnetic design and optimization are based on an RFQ model. Multiphysics simulations are then performed for the CW mode. Vacuum calculations suggest that the RFQ requires four 1200 L/s vacuum pumps and one 440 L/s ion pump to attain a vacuum pressure of 10−6 Pa.

Abstract:The design progress of the Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator for the Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) at Tsinghua University is presented in this paper. The RFQ will accelerate protons from 50 keV to 3 MeV, with the RF frequency of 325 MHz. The objective is to obtain the optimum structure of the RFQ accelerator with high transmission rate and tolerable total length. The beam dynamics are studied by the simulation of the proton beam in the RFQ accelerator with the code of PARMTEQM. The output proton beam from the RFQ is well matched into the DTL without Medium-Energy-Beam-Transport (MEBT) between the RFQ and DTL. INTRODUCTION A 325 MHz Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator will be built to produce 50mA of proton beam at 3 MeV as an injector of the 13 MeV DTL for the Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) project at Tsinghua University. The CPHS project is a universitybased proton accelerator platform (13 MeV, 16 kW, peak current 50 mA, 0.5 ms pulse width at 50 Hz) for multidisciplinary neutron and proton applications [1]. The RFQ system consists of three four-vane resonant cavity sections, one power coupler, 47 slug tuners, 8 dipole-mode stabilizer rods, the RF power supply and its low-level control, vacuum, water cooling, resonance control, beam diagnostics, support and alignment systems. Fig. 1 shows the sketch of the RFQ system and the design parameters are listed in Table 1. Figure 1: Sketch of the 3 MeV RFQ for the CPHS project. To save space and cost, no Medium-Energy-BeamTransport (MEBT) will be placed between the RFQ and DTL. The RFQ is carefully designed to match the beam from the high-energy end of the RFQ to the entrance of the DTL, by reducing the focusing in the exit of the RFQ. The cavity cross section and vane-tip geometry are tailored as a function of longitudinal position. The physics design has been completed. One test section made by aluminium has been machined to verify the capability of the numerically controlled milling machine. The final RFQ cavity is now under construction. This paper summarizes the current physics and mechanical design of the CPHS RFQ and presents the fabrication status of the test section. Abstract:The beam dynamics for a 201.25MHz 50mA 2.0MeV Deuteron RFQ accelerator with duty cycle of 10% has been further improved by using equipartitioned method. The RFQ structure, mechanical design, thermal analysis and its cooling method have been investigated. The tuning of RF cavity for the field and other parameters has been simulated. A new developed ECR ion source and its setup have been completed and tested. The LEBT for the injection of RFQ is under the construction, and the HEBT at RFQ exit for the further applications has been designed and to be constructed in the near future. All the development results will be presented in this paper.

Abstract:A 201.5 MHz,2.0 MeV,50 mA deuteron Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator is proposed as the neutron generator for the Peking University (PKU) Neutron Experiment Facility. For the good performance at the frequency ～200 MHz,the 4-rod resonator structure is chosen. Also,the mini-vane-type electrode is adopted for convenient water-cooling. The total RF structure design studies are performed by one of the most reliable 3D electromagnetic field simulation software,CST Microwave Studio(○R),with attentions to meet the demands of lowest dipole effect as well as minimum RF power consumption. The detail optimization methods and results are presented.

Abstract:A new 973 project was proposed by Peking University and Institute of Modern Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences recently. The project requires a 50 mA, 162.5 MHz, cw mode radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) to accelerate the D+ to 1MeV. In a high-current linear accelerator, the strong space charge effect causes the growth of envelope and emittance along with heavy beam losses. In the beam dynamics design of this RFQ, beam envelope mismatching is discussed and a matching dynamics method is proposed to minimize the envelope and emittance growth. The influence of limiting current on the beam transmission is discussed and used in the optimization of transverse and longitudinal parameters. After the optimization, the beam transmission efficiency reaches higher than 98%.

Abstract:The design and construction status of the Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator for the Compact Pulsed Hadron Source (CPHS) at Tsinghua University is presented. The RFQ will accelerate protons from 50 keV to 3 MeV, with the RF frequency of 325MHz. The total length of the RFQ cavity is about 3 m with the transmission rate of 97.2% predicted by PARMTEQM. Fine machining of the RFQ cavity was completed in July, 2011. The brazing of the vanes, the flanges and the cooling pipes has been finished in September, 2011.

Abstract:The deuteron driver accelerator of the Beijing Isotope Separation On-Line (BISOL) facility will accelerate and deliver a 20 mA deuteron beam to the targets with an energy of 40 MeV. As the injector of the driver linac, an RFQ is required to bunch and accelerate the 20 mA deuteron beam to 3 MeV with very high beam quality. In order to fulfil these requirements and reduce time spent on optimization, an RFQ design program named RFQEP has been developed to generate the input file for the PARMTEQM code. In this program, the ‘matched and equipartitioned’ design strategy is adopted to prevent halo formation and to avoid structure resonances in high intensity RFQs. The detailed design aspects are studied in this paper and simulation results are given for an RFQ designed by this code, which shows the accuracy and the merits of the new program.

Abstract:A deuteron CW RFQ was designed and fabricated in Peking University. It will accelerate 50 mA CW deuteron beam from 50 keV to 1M eV at 162.5 MHz. The novel structure of four-vane with magnetic coupling windows was used to separate the dipole mode from the accelerating mode. The field tuning of this RFQ was different from conventional four vane RFQ because that the four quadrants of the RFQ cavity were coupled. The beam dynamics of the RFQ was designed by equipartition and matching method, limiting current effect was considered at the same time. The voltage between electrodes is 60 kV, the transmission efficiency of RFQ is 98%. For the copper cavity, the measured Q0 of the operating mode is 96% of the simulated value. Only 47 hours was spent to increase CW power of cavity from 0 to 55 kW in high power test and The RFQ can operate stable at the design voltage. The preliminary H2 beam experiment has been done and 1.78 mA CW beam was obtained at exit of RFQ. This paper will introduce the design and experiment of the RFQ. INTRODUCTION High current CW RFQ accelerators are very useful in fusion material study, nuclear waste transmutation, high intensity neutron source, boron neutron capture therapy, etc. Many international laboratory are developing the technology of high current CW RFQ. A CW RFQ for accelerating heavy ion was built for FRIB project [1]; deuteron CW RFQ accelerators were built for SARAF and IFMIF/EVEDA project [2, 3]; a proton CW RFQ accelerators was constructed for CADS project [4]. The important problem of CW RFQ is deformation caused by high power consumption and discharge of the cavity, which can easily lead to unstable operation. In order to accumulate experience and technology in design, fabrication and operation of high current CW RFQs, a deuteron CW RFQ has been designed and fabricated in Peking University which is supported by the 973 program funding. New structure, four-vane with coupling magnetic windows, is used for the RFQ. This structure was used for RFQ of heavy ions in America and Russia [5, 6]. Our RFQ is the first high frequency window-type RFQ. BEAM DYNAMICS DESIGN In the beam dynamics design, we controlled the limiting current from the gentle bunching section to the end of the acceleration section, and adopted a matched and equipartitioned design method to reduce the radius of the transverse envelope, suppress the increase of the emittance, and reduce the beam loss at high-energy section. The detail of the beam dynamics design can be found in our previous publication [7]. Figure 1 shows the main parameters changing with RFQ cells after optimization. Table 1: Design Parameters of the RFQ COLD MODEL MEASUREMENT The window-type RFQ RF structure design and the fabrication process can be found in Ref. [7]. In the beginning of 2018, we have completed the cavity fabrication and made low power RF test on the copper cavity. The measured RF characteristics of the RFQ cavity and the simulated ones are listed in Table 2. The operating frequency of the RFQ without tuning is 0.233 MHz below the simulated value. The measured Q0 of the operating mode is 96% of the simulated value. Abstract:For a high-current Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator, space charge will strongly affect the stability of beams, which brings challenges and difficulties to the beam dynamics design. For an in-depth study of this space charge effect, a project has been proposed by Peking University and the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This project requires a 162.5 MHz RFQ to accelerate a 100-mA continuous-wave (CW) proton beam to 3 MeV. The beam dynamics design of this RFQ is based on the four-section procedure with improved radial focusing strength along the RFQ. We have investigated the relationship between limiting current and beam transmission to analyze the reasons for emittance growth and beam loss. We have also carried out an irradiation experiment based on this beam dynamics design to study the irradiation damage of the electrode surface, as this can be one main reason for reduced transmission or unstable operation that most existing high-current RFQs encounter after long-time operation. The results show that low-energy beam losses need to be kept as low as possible to prolong the life of the RFQ electrodes. The final simulated transmission efficiency reached 99.8%, as confirmed by the code toutatis.

Abstract:A new 162.5 MHz RFQ has been built for a joint 973 project between Peking University (PKU) and Institute of Modern Physics (IMP). It is designed to deliver 50-mA deuteron beams to 1 MeV in CW mode, with an intervoltage of 60 kV and a length of 1.809 m. Due to its window-type structure, the RFQ has compact cross-section, sufficient mode separation and high specific shunt impedance. It consists of two segments fabricated and installed at IMP. The assembling error of the cavity is less than 0.05 mm. The RF measurements show good electrical properties of the resonant cavity with a measured unloaded quality factor equal to 96.4% of the simulated value. After tuning, we obtained the nominal frequency and field unbalance within ±1.0%. Preparation of high-power test of this RFQ is underway. This paper will cover the fabrication details and RF measurements, as well as the progress of high-power test. INTRODUCTION High-current continuous-wave (CW) RFQ is greatly needed for basic research, energy, medicine, etc., but also a great challenge. Since 2013, PKU and IMP have been collaborating on a new 973 project, which aims to build a 50-mA CW deuteron RFQ. The design of beam dynamics and RF structure has been completed [1-2]. Main parameters of this RFQ are listed in Table 1. As shown in Fig. 1, the RFQ adopts a window-type structure [3-4], with low power consumption and sufficient mode separation, with no stabilizing rods required. At present, the RFQ has been fabricated, assembled and tested at IMP. FABRICATION The RFQ cavity consists of two nearly identical segments of 904.50-mm length and input/output flanges, which are all made of oxygen-free copper (OFC). Each segment is divided into four vanes and four cavity walls for manufacturing. The RFQ is also equipped with 28 60mm-diameter tuners, 2 couplers, 8 vacuum ports, 8 pickups and 56 cooling connectors. The fabrication procedure passed the following steps: 1. All the components went through the rough machining, deep-hole processing, semi-finishing and fine machining in turn. Ball-end milling tools were used during processing the vane modulations, as the transvers radius of the vane tip was designed to change along the RFQ. As shown in Fig. 2, the maximal machining error was measured to be 0.0317 mm, located at the vane tip. 2. The RFQ components were vertically assembled together. Abstract:This paper describes the physical design of a radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator for a compact accelerator-driven neutron source. The 325-MHz RFQ accelerates a 30-mA deuteron beam from 50 keV to 2 MeV, which is directly matched to the drift-tube linac (DTL) without a separate beam matching section. The objective of this design is to obtain a short RFQ with a tolerable transmission and power consumption. Using a modified four-section procedure, the inter-vane voltage is ramped with RFQ longitudinal position to obtain the required short length, and the focusing strength is varied to suppress beam loss. The RFQ has a length of 193.2 cm, with a peak power consumption of 186 kW, and a beam transmission of 94.1%.

Abstract:The radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator is a common linear accelerator placed directly after the ion source for low energy ion acceleration. In 1994 and 1999, the RFQ research group of Peking University, led by Academician Chen Jiaer, first proposed and developed the heavy ion integral split ring (ISR) 300 keV N+ and 1 MeV O+ RFQ accelerators. Because of the simultaneous transverse focusing and longitudinal bunching in a cavity, an RFQ accelerator is considered to be the most suitable linear accelerator for the acceleration of low energy and high current beams. However, a long RFQ cavity will decrease the efficiency of RF power. To improve the acceleration efficiency of ions, separated-function radio frequency quadrupole (SFRFQ) was proposed for the first time, and the prototype of the structure was developed and the beam experiments were completed. A new idea of accelerating positive and negative ions simultaneously using RFQ accelerators was proposed for the first time. The process of beam bunching and acceleration of positive and negative ions was simulated and the microscopic beam waveforms of positive and negative oxygen ions were observed successfully with a coaxial fast Faraday cup. Beam experiments were completed on two existing RFQ accelerators. The equipartitioned design scheme of RFQ is developed, and the first neutron imaging facility based on RFQ (Peking University Neutron Imaging Facility, PKUNIFTY) is developed in China. The four-rod D+ RFQ accelerator is the one with the highest frequency in the world so far. In cooperation with the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the China Institute of Atomic Energy, the 352 MHz proton RFQ model cavity was developed, which effectively boosted the development of China's first proton ADS RFQ accelerator, and won the Beijing Science and Technology Achievement Award in 2008. Peking University and Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have designed and built a high charge state heavy ion U-238(34+) CW RFQ accelerator, which has successfully accelerated many kinds of heavy ion beams and has been in stable operation for 8 years. In cooperation with Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the world's first 162.5 MHz window-type RFQ accelerator was developed, and the CW H-2(+) current intensity was successfully accelerated to 1.95 mA, and the transmission efficiency was 90%. In cooperation with Southwestern Institute of Physics, a 162.5 MHz D+ four-vane RFQ accelerator was designed and tested, beam experiments on the RFQ accelerator indicated that the maximum accelerated beam current could reach 10 mA with a duty factor of 1%. The development direction of RFQ accelerators in the future is the high power accelerators with high current intensity and high duty factor. The above work lays a good foundation for the development of high power RFQ accelerators. High current continuous wave radio quadrupole accelerator (CW RFQ) is widely used as an injector in many big science projects, such as accelerator driven sub-critical clean nuclear energy system (ADS), isotope separation online analysis, International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF). The most common component of accelerating the low energy segment is also widely used as an independent accelerator application device, it has a very broad application prospect in neutron imaging, boron neutron capture for cancer treatment (BNCT) and other fields.

Abstract:A deuteron radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) is being built by the RFQ group at Peking University. It is a very compact high-current RFQ, operating at 162.5 MHz in continuous-wave mode. By optimizing the beam dynamics design, our simulations reached 98% transmission efficiency for acceleration of the 50-mA deuteron beam from 50 keV to 1 MeV, with an intervane voltage of 60 kV and a length of 1.809 m. This RFQ adopts a window-type structure, with low power consumption and sufficient mode separation, with no stabilizing rods required. Its magnetic coupling windows have been optimized by both electromagnetic simulation and the construction of an equivalent circuit model. The empirical equation based on the circuit model provides a new way to evaluate the effect of the window size on the frequency. In addition, an aluminum model of the full-length RFQ has been built and tested, and the results show good agreement with the simulations. During the tuning process, the magnetic coupling effect between quadrants was found to be unique to the window-type RFQ. We also propose a method to estimate the effects of different degrees of electric field unflatness on the beam transmission. For the cooling system design, the results of thermostructural analysis, verified by comparing results from ANSYS and CST, show that the special cooling channels provide a high cooling efficiency around the magnetic coupling windows. The maximal deformation of the structure was approximately 75 mu m. The beam-loading effect caused by a high current, and the coupler design, are also discussed.
CW RFQ design and investigation for multi-charge-state acceleration of radioactive beams from BISOL

Abstract:A continuous-wave (CW) heavy-ion radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) has been designed to accelerate radioactive beams from the Beijing Isotope Separation On-Line (BISOL) facility. This RFQ will accelerate high-charge-state ions such as Sn-132(21+) from 3 keV/u to 300 keV/u with a vane length of 3.77 m at a frequency of 81.25 MHz. The transmission efficiency reached 98.1% in simulation. The output longitudinal normalized rms emittance is 0.31 keV/u.ns. Tolerance analysis shows that this RFQ can handle a wide range of non-ideal beams while retaining a relatively high transmission efficiency and low longitudinal emittance. In order to increase the intensity of the radioactive ion beams (RIB), this RFQ will accelerate multi-charge-state beams simultaneously. In the case of the tin beam (Sn), we have studied the transmission of adjacent charge state beams and multi-charge-state beams in this RFQ. The transmission efficiency and output transverse beam quality of the multi-charge-state beams are close to the results of the single-charge-state beam, but the output longitudinal emittance is larger. For the radio frequency (RF) structural design, we have compared different types of RFQ, including an DI RFQ, a 4-rod RFQ and a 4-vane RFQ. We have selected a 4-vane RFQ design with dipole stablizer rods, due to the considerations of power consumption, the flatness of electric field, cooling convenience and machining efficiency. We have performed full 3D simulations with multi-physics analysis.

Abstract:An RFQ, which will be operated at 352 MHz frequency and 6% duty factor and will accelerate 50mA proton beam from 80keV to 5MeV, has been proposed as an injector of the verification facility of Accelerator Driven System (ADS) for Radioactive Clear Nuclear Power System in China. The RFQ general layout and beam dynamics simulation and error study are described in the paper.

Abstract:Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) promises a bright future in cancer therapy for its highly selective destruction of cancer cells, using the 10B +n→7Li +4 He reaction. It offers a more satisfactory therapeutic effect than traditional methods for the treatment of malignant brain tumors, head and neck cancer, melanoma, liver cancer and so on. A CW 4-vane RFQ, operating at 162.5 MHz, provides acceleration of a 20 mA proton beam to 2.5 MeV, bombarding a liquid lithium target for neutron production with a soft neutron energy spectrum. The fast neutron yield is about 1.73×1013n∕s. We preliminarily develop and optimize a beam shaping assembly design for the 7Li(p, n)7Be reaction with a 2.5 MeV proton beam. The epithermal neutron flux simulated at the beam port will reach up to 1.575×109 n/s/cm2. The beam dynamics design, simulation and benchmark for 2.5 MeV BNCT RFQ have been performed with both ParmteqM (V3.05) and Toutatis, with a transmission efficiency higher than 99.6% at 20 mA. To ease the thermal management in the CW RFQ operation, we adopt a modest inter-vane voltage design (U=65 kV), though this does increase the accelerator length (reaching 5.2 m). Using the well-developed 3D electromagnetic codes, CST MWS and ANSYS HFSS, we are able to deal with the complexity of the BNCT RFQ, taking the contribution of each component in the RF volume into consideration. This allows us to optimize the longitudinal field distribution in a full-length model. Also, the parametric modeling technique is of great benefit to extensive modifications and simulations. In addition, the resonant frequency tuning of this RFQ is studied, giving the tuning sensitivities of vane channel and wall channel as −16.3 kHz/°C and 12.4 kHz/°C, respectively. Finally, both the multipacting level of this RFQ and multipacting suppressing in the coaxial coupler are investigated.
