Abstract:Objectives To compare the different balance control behaviors in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis(AIS), congenital scoliosis(CS) and normal adolescents with static posturography and to explore possible mechanism for AIS associated with balance dysfunction. Methods Totally 12 thoracic AIS patients,10 thoracic CS patients and 10 normal adolescents were enrolled in the study. The whole examination contained 4 parts:(1) vision(V),(2) no-vision (NV),(3) perturbed proprioception/vision(PP-V),(4) perturbed proprioception/no-vision(PP-NV).Static posturography was used to compare subjects' balance control behaviors, and general locus length(GLL) and external area (EA) were recorded.Recorded parameters were analyzed using ANOVA between 3 groups and 4 sensory conditions. Results In each sensory condition AIS and CS group showed more aggravated balance control behaviors than normal group. But the balance control behaviors did not have significant difference between AIS and CS group in such condition. In AIS group,GLL was similar between V and NV stages. In normal group,GLL and EA were similar between NV and PP-V stages. Conclusion The present results suggest that;(1) 3D distortion of spine may be responsible for AIS associated with balance dysfunction.(2) Compared to control participants,AIS and CS patients relies much more on ankle proprioception to control the postural balance.
