Abstract:Objectives: To investigate the health seeking behaviors of hypertensive patients and their effects on blood pressure in urban communities in Chengdu. Methods: We randomly selected 5 communities in Wuhou District, Chengdu, to carry out the epidemiological survey of hypertension. Among the community residents surveyed, 437 hypertensive patients were randomly selected to fill in the health seeking behavior questionnaires. Results: 400 questionnaires were filled in completely. Among the hypertensive patients investigated, 251 patients (62.8%) chose the community health service center as the usual place for medical treatment, 21 patients (5.2%) chose the non specialist hospitals such as individual clinics, private hospitals and health station of enterprises and institutions, 86 patients (21.5%) chose the cardiology clinic in the two or three level general hospital, and 42 patients (10.5%) chose both community health service center and cardiology clinic. The BP in the four groups were 145.1/75.9, 150.9/79.0, 143.8/74.3 and 136.3/72.6 mmHg (P = 0.007, P = 0.066), respectively. The control rates of BP were 39.4%, 23.8%, 43.0% and 54.8% (P = 0.100). Age, gender, duration, symptoms and family history of hypertension, obesity, diabetes, lipid disorders, cardiovascular diseases combined and medical insurance reimbursement were not statistical different, otherwise, education levels, home BP self-measurement, community filing, medication compliance and side effects of drugs were statistical different among the four groups. Conclusion: The SBP was significant lower, and the control rate of BP was relative higher (although not significant) in the patients choosing both community health service center and cardiology clinic in the two or three level general hospital as the usual places for medical treatment than in other three groups.
