Abstract:This paper reports the findings of three experiments investigating children's emerging knowledge of the semantics of information-seeking questions and declarative statements in Mandarin Chinese. Mandarin is particularly revealing about the semantic relationship between questions and statements, because it is a wh-in-situ language where question words appear in the same surface syntactic position in both questions and statements. The non-interrogative meanings that Mandarin-speaking children assign to question words lend weight to a unified approach to the semantics of existential expressions, including Free Choice Expressions, Negative Polarity Items, and disjunction words. When Mandarin question words appear in statements, children interpret them to be the semantic equivalents of existential expressions. The findings, therefore, support the unified approach to the semantics of existential expressions.

Abstract:This study investigated 5-year-old Mandarin-speaking children’s comprehension of wh-questions, universal statements and free choice inferences. Previous research has found that Mandarin-speaking children assign a universal interpretation to sentences with a wh-word (e.g., shei ‘who’) followed by the adverbial quantifier dou ‘all’ (Zhou in Appl Psycholinguist 36:411–435, 2013). Children also compute free choice inferences in sentences that contain a modal verb in addition to a wh-word and dou (Zhou, in: Nakayama, Su, Huang (eds.) Studies in Chinese and Japanese language acquisition: in honour of Stephen Crain. John Benjamins Publishing Company, Amsterdam, pp 223–235, 2017). The present study used a Question-Statement Task to assess children’s interpretation of sentences containing shei + dou, both with and without the modal verb beiyunxu ‘was allowed to’, as well as the contrast between sentences with shei + dou, which are statements for adults, versus ones with dou + shei, which are wh-questions for adults. The 5-year-old Mandarin-speaking child participants exhibited adult-like linguistic knowledge of the semantics and pragmatics of wh-words, the adverbial quantifier dou, and the deontic modal verb beiyunxu.
Non-prototypical Interrogatives in Chinese

Abstract:In Chinese,speech acts are possible to cause a sentence with interrogative subordinate object clause to change from a declarative or imperative sentence in syntax and semantics into an interrogative sentence,i.e.,a non-prototypical interrogative. Four types of non-prototypical interrogatives have been summed up in this paper based on different types of speech acts. All these non-prototypical interrogatives exclude interrogative markers in their main clauses,but could include the de-interrogative markers. They also have deferent degrees of interrogative mood. Some specific discourse markers in Chinese have the same functions in similar structures. The degrees of interrogative mood of these non-prototypical interrogatives are determined by six factors from the view of illocutionary force,adjacency and discourse markers.

Abstract:This book deals with how to ask questions in the languages of China. The syntactic, morphological, and lexical forms for distinguishing interrogatives take centre stage; intonation is also dealt with, but more peripherally than question particles, disjunctive and negative constructions, and word order. 140 languages spoken in China are covered coming from four major families: Sino-Tibetan, Altaic, Austronesian and Austro-Asiatic, accompanied by a few mixed languages. The approach is areal-typological, i.e. these focal languages are compared to the languages of the world as represented in typological samples, and within China areal patterns of the structural variables are examined.The book will be an indispensable reference for future work on interrogatives in a typological context and for areal studies of the language situation in China and more generally East Asia.

Abstract:Comparing with interrogative sentences,Rhetorical question has an outstanding feature in its syntax,semantic meaning and pragmatics.It has its unique expression in the sentence structure.Without changing the semantic meaning,its wh-question and yes-no-question can be exchanged.The inner parts of its wh-question can be exchanged as well.In the deep semantic meaning structure,rhetorical question does not have the unknown semantic meaning element,thus conveys only its judgement while not its question object.In the pragmatic situation,rhetorical question must have an ample prerequisite,and its judgement is sure to be the result of this ample prerequisite.

Translation of Complex Words and Sentences in Two Translated English Versions of A Journey to the West

Abstract:A Journey to the West,or xi you ji in Chinese,is one of the four Chinese classics.It has been translated into many foreign languages.Among these versions,there are two influential English versions: the incomplete version translated by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang,and the complete version translated by W.J.F.Jenner.A comparative study is made in this paper on the translation of such complex words and sentences as proper names of people,poems and proverbs.Though both successful in conveying the original meaning,the two versions are substantially different.Yangs' version is striking for its fluency and exoticism while Jenner's version is faithful and accurate in conveying the Chinese culture.

Studying the Concept of Panruo of "Journey to the West" from Alms Bowl of Xuanzang Tsang

Abstract:The story of Anuo asked Xuanzang Tsang and his apprentices for 'fellow' in Journey to the West was regarded as the evidence of satirizing Buddhism.But analyzing from the religious tropism of the Journey to the West,the fundamental tenet and the relevant legal cases about Monk Jin Bi-feng,one can find that Anuo asked for the Alms Bowl was not at all satirizing Buddhism but the important element of the Panruo ideology system with rich Buddhist cultural content.If it was taken as the evidence of satirizing Buddhism,it would misunderstand the author's intention,betray the religious tropism of the Journey to the West,betray the fundamental tenet of Buddhism.

Abstract:This paper deals with rhetorically intended questions in the Zhuangzi, a foundational text of Daoism (fourth century bc). Such questions are generally meant to evoke silent answers in the addressee's mind, thereby involving a fictive type of interaction (Pascual 2006, 2014). We analyse rhetorical questions as constructions of intersubjectivity (see Verhagen 2005, 2008), involving not just a conceptual integration of question and assertion but also a viewpoint blend (Dancygier and Sweetser [eds] 2012). They involve fusing the perspectives of the writer, the assumed prospective readers, and possibly also that of the discourse characters (in the case of rhetorical questions ascribed to a discourse character but meant to represent the writer's voice). In this highly influential text with abundant mixed viewpoint scenarios, the interpretation of rhetorical questions involves the resolution of different viewpoints, which are set up and shifted in a multi-layered manner for particular argumentative purposes.

Abstract:Since the debate between Lu Xun's "indigenous theory" and Hu Shi's "exotic theory" on the origin of the image of Sun Wukong, there has been nearly a hundred years of academic discussion. Scholars from various schools have conducted a large number of beneficial studies and reached well-founded conclusions. However, due to the unique nature of Journey to the West as a work that has been accumulated across generations and carries a distinct historical sediment, the controversy surrounding it has always been at an impasse, with no consensus reached. Based on previous studies, this paper will provide an overview of the mainstream theories within the academic community. It will then conduct etymological and dialectical analysis of the character of Sun Wukong from the perspective of the "indigenous theory", thus demonstrating the high plausibility of the indigenous viewpoint.

Abstract:This chapter explores the cognitive underpinnings of rhetoric by presenting a case study of the rhetorical use of non-information-seeking questions in the Zhuangzi (4th c. B.C.), a foundational Daoist text. These questions are: expository questions (“Why do I say this? Because…”) and rhetorical questions (“Why bother?”) (Xiang and Pascual 2016). Abstract:The reasons why scholars disagree on the interpretation of the connotation of “characters” inThe Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons are various, yet it is the interpretation method of quoting sentences to explain main ideas that mostly limits the understanding of Li Xie’s detailed contexts and writing principles. If we can quote the whole texts in “Character Articles” to explain, and grasp the innate logics and the relation with other similar texts, it will be not dififcult to ifnd that the motive of Liu Xie’s preference for characters is to remedy the weaknesses of the theory of “words reaching far with texts”. He regards characters as one special way to show the author’s talent, which corresponds with the author’s feelings and aspiration to touch and convince readers with sincere emotions and rational reasoning. As far as the so-called “clear characters and unique spirits”, it is a norm or requirement presented by Liu Xie based on his religious standpoint, and is not the focus in “Character Articles”.

Abstract:The paper analyzes the process of formation and development of Chinese character 法 which forms fundamental category of traditional law. Since ancient times, the law has been responsible for the regulation of social relations. It played an important role in shaping the legal culture of the state. The origins of European law are rooted in the legal and political teachings of ancient civilization. Traditional law has long played a prominent role in the life of the state and society in China. The functions of the law were in the methods of government and in the system of punishments. One of the most important features of Chinese culture is that it is closely related to the history of writing. Pictograms are the basis of Chinese characters writing. They originate in the archaic art of ancient China. Ancient signs are one of the main sources of information about ancient Chinese writing. The author analyzes the original image of this character, which was found on the ritual bronze vessel of the Western Zhou dynasty. It includes three main parts. The most interesting is the character of zhi (廌 ), which is translated as “a magic animal”. According to Chinese mythology, it is portrayed as a companion of the judge Gao Yao. It is also a symbol of justice.

Abstract:Adapted from the literary classic “Journey to the West”, the author of the online novel “Legend of Wukong” places the expression of the spirit of “Journey to the West” on the growth of individual characters and the pursuit of ideals. He unfolds the narrative with defamiliarization, adds contemporary elements of the worldview and outlook on life, changes the characters, language, narrative and other aspects of the novel, and expresses the awakening of individual consciousness and the destruction of personal ideals from the characters’ acts of resistance, subverts the original concept of “Journey to the West”, and reflects the humanistic connotation of the spirit of “Journey to the West” in the new era.

Abstract:Journey to the West is one of the four famous Chinese classical works and it was reproduced into TV drama both at home and abroad, which has aroused great concern. However, current studies mainly compare the English translated versions with Chinese one, focusing on the translation strategies for the verbal texts or on the cultural level. Therefore, this study explores different kinds of intersemiotic shifts in the subtitle translation of Journey to the West and reasons that have caused these intersemiotic shifts via a multimodal analytical framework. Ten episodes chosen according to the plots will be analyzed. Findings show that there are mainly six kinds of intersemiotic shifts in the Journey to the West. Image and para-/non-verbal modes can supplement the meaning expressed in the verbal texts.
