Abstract:We derive the current algebra of two-dimensional (0,2) supergravity, using the light-cone gauge approach à la Polyakov. It is found that the central charge of the current algebra is real for any d, in agreement with the observation by Polyakov and Zamolodchikov.

Abstract:We construct two-dimensional supergravity theories endowed with a positive cosmological constant, that admit de Sitter vacua. We consider the cases of $\mathcal{N}=1$ as well as $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, and couple the supergravity to a superconformal field theory with the same amount of supersymmetry. Upon fixing a supersymmetric extension of the Weyl gauge, the theories are captured, at the quantum level, by supersymmetric extensions of timelike Liouville theory with $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry respectively. The theories exhibit good ultraviolet properties and are amenable to a variety of techniques such as systematic loop expansions and, in the $\mathcal{N}=2$ case, supersymmetric localization. Our constructions offer a novel path toward a precise treatment of the Euclidean gravitational path integral for de Sitter, and in turn, the Gibbons-Hawking entropy of the de Sitter horizon. We argue that the supersymmetric localization method applied to the $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory must receive contributions from boundary terms in configuration space. We also discuss how these theories overcome several obstructions that appear upon combining de Sitter space with supersymmetry.

Abstract:We present a complete solution of the constraints for two-dimensional, N=2 supergravity in N=2 superspace. We obtain explicit expressions for the covariant derivatives in terms of the vector superfield $H^m$ and, for the two versions of minimal (2,2) supergravity, a chiral or twisted chiral scalar superfield $\phi$.

A General Study of Ground States of N=2 Supergravity Theories with Symmetric Scalar Manifolds in 5 Dimensions

Abstract:After reviewing the existing results we give an extensive analysis of the critical points of the potentials of the gauged N=2 Yang-Mills/Einstein Supergravity theories coupled to tensor- and hyper multiplets. Our analysis includes all the possible gaugings of all N=2 Maxwell-Einstein supergravity theories whose scalar manifolds are symmetric spaces. In general, the scalar potential gets contributions from R-symmetry gauging, tensor couplings and hyper-couplings. We show that the coupling of a hypermultiplet into a theory whose potential has a non-zero value at its critical point, and gauging a compact subgroup of the hyperscalar isometry group will only rescale the value of the potential at the critical point by a positive factor, and therefore will not change the nature of an existing critical point. However this is not the case for non-compact SO(1,1) gaugings. An SO(1,1) gauging of the hyper isometry will generally lead to deSitter vacua, which is analogous to the ground states found by simultaneously gauging SO(1,1) symmetry of the real scalar manifold with U(1)_R in earlier literature. SO(m,1) gaugings with m>1, which give contributions to the scalar potential only in the Magical Jordan family theories, on the other hand, do not lead to deSitter vacua. Anti-deSitter vacua are generically obtained when the U(1)_R symmetry is gauged. We also show that it is possible to embed certain generic Jordan family theories into the Magical Jordan family preserving the nature of the ground states. However the Magical Jordan family theories have additional ground states which are not found in the generic Jordan family theories.

Abstract:We present a theory of N=2 chiral supergravity in (10+2)-dimensions. This formulation is similar to N=1 supergravity presented recently using null-vectors in 12D. In order to see the consistency of this theory, we perform a simple dimensional reduction to ten-dimensions, reproducing the type IIB chiral supergravity. We also show that our supergravity can be consistent background for super (2+2)-brane theory, satisfying fermionic invariance of the total action. Such supergravity theory without manifest Lorentz invariance had been predicted by the recent F-theory in twelve-dimensions.

Abstract:Two different forms of d-dimensional supersymmetric quantum mechanics are constructed from 1-dimensional one by means of two complex Clifford algebras C(d,0) and C(0,d) respectively. The two new d-dimensional realizations are based upon the more general supercharges, which include not only a vector superpotential but also a complex scalar superpotential, and bring out the richer structures.
Non-Abelian T-dualities in Two Dimensional $(0,2)$ Gauged Linear Sigma Models

Abstract:Two dimensional gauged linear sigma models(GLSMs) with $(0,2)$ supersymmetry and $U(1)$ gauge group possesing global symmetries are considered. For the case obtained as a reduction from the $(2,2)$ supersymmetric GLSM, we find the Abelian T-dual, comparing with previous studies. Then, the Abelian T-dual model of the pure $(0,2)$ theory is found. Instanton corrections are also discussed in both situations. In the cases under study we explore the vacua for the scalar potential and we analyse the target space geometry of the dual model. A model with gauge symmetry $U(1)\times U(1)$ is also discussed as precursor of an interesting example with non-Abelian global symmetry. Non-Abelian T-dualization of $U(1)$ $(0,2)$ $2d$ GLSMs is implemented for models which arise as a reduction from $(2,2)$ supersymmetry; we study a concrete model with $U(1)$ gauge symmetry and $SU(2)$ global symmetry. It is shown that for a positive definite scalar potential, the dual vacua to $\mathbb{P}^1$ constitutes a disk. Instanton corrections to the superpotential are obtained and shown to be encoded in a shifting of the holomorphic function ${E}$. We conclude by analyzing an example with $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ global symmetry and we obtain that the space of dual vacua to $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ consists of two copies of the disk, also for the case of positive definite potential. Here we are able to fully integrate the equations of motion leading to non-Abelian duality, improving with respect to previous $(2,2)$ studies.

Octonions and Quantum Gravity through the Central Charge Anomaly in the Clifford Algebra

Abstract:We derive a theory of quantum gravity containing an AdS$_3$ isometry/qubit duality. The theory is based on a superalgebra generalization of the enveloping algebra of the homogeneous AdS$_3$ spacetime isometry group and is isomorphic to the complexified octonion algebra through canonical quantization. Its first three quaternion generators correspond to an $\hbar$-quantized AdS$_3$ embedded spacetime and its remaining four non-quaternion generators to a $G$-quantized embedding $2+2$ Minkowski spacetime. The quaternion algebra's expression after a monomorphism into the complexified Clifford algebra produces a two-dimensional conformal operator product expansion with a central charge anomaly, which results in an area-law $\hbar G$ scaling satisfying the holographic principle and defines an "arrow of time". This relationship allows us to extend the theory through supersymmetry- and conformal-breaking $\mathcal O(G)$ transformations of the embedding to produce perturbed AdS$_3$ spacetimes and derive a resolution to the black hole information paradox with an explicit mechanism.

Abstract:Four dimensional N=2 generalized superconformal field theory can be defined by compactifying six dimensional (0,2) theory on a Riemann surface with regular punctures. In previous studies, gauge coupling constant space is identified with the moduli space of punctured Riemann surface M_{g,n}. We show that the weakly coupled gauge group description corresponds to a stable nodal curve, and the coupling space is actually the Deligne-Mumford compactification \bar{M}_{g,n}. We also give an algorithm to determine the weakly coupled gauge group and matter content in any duality frame.

Abstract:We present the full Lagrangian and supersymmetry transformation rules for the gauged D=4, N=4 (half-maximal) supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of vector multiplets. Using the embedding tensor formulation, the final results are universal and valid in arbitrary symplectic frames. We also analyze the conditions for the critical points of the scalar potential and specify the full spectrum of the quadratic fluctuations about Minkowski vacua. This allows us also to exclude the appearance of quadratic divergences in the 1-loop corrections to the scalar potential for any Minkowski vacuum fully breaking supersymmetry. We also provide some interesting byproducts of our analysis, like the field equations and the quadratic constraints for the fermion shifts characterizing the gauging (also known as T-tensor identities).

Abstract:We present various (0,2) heterotic supercurrent supermultiplets in (1+1) dimensional quantum field theories. From the minimal supercurrent supermultiplets, we deduce conditions on symmetry enhancement such as Lorentz invariance, (chiral) dilatation invariance, R-invariance, (chiral) conformal invariance and their various combinations. Our construction covers many interesting and/or exotic possibilities such as Lifshitz supersymmetry and warped superconformal algebra. We also discuss the corresponding supergravity by gauging the supercurrent supermultiplet. In particular, we propose a novel class of heterotic supergravity based on the virial supercurrent.

Abstract:We construct the nonlinear $N=2$ super-$W_3^{(2)}$ algebra with an arbitrary central charge at the classical level in the framework of Polyakov "soldering" procedure. It contains two non-intersecting subalgebras: $N=2$ superconformal algebra and $W_3^{(2)}$ and their closure gives the $N=2$ super-$W_3^{(2)}$ algebra. Besides the currents of $N=2$ superconformal and $W_3^{(2)}$ algebras, it comprises two pairs of fermionic currents with spins 1 and 2. The hybrid field realization and contractions to the zero central charge are constructed.

Abstract:We study a class of two-dimensional 𝒩=(0, 4) quiver gauge theories that flow to superconformal field theories. We find dualities for the superconformal field theories similar to the 4d 𝒩=2 theories of class 𝒮 , labelled by a Riemann surface 𝒞 . The dual descriptions arise from various pair-of-pants decompositions, that involve an analog of the T N theory. Especially, we find the superconformal indices of such theories can be written in terms of a topological field theory on 𝒞 . We interpret this class of SCFTs as the ones coming from compactifying 6d 𝒩=(2, 0) theory on ℂℙ^1×𝒞 . Moreover, some new dualities of (0 , 2) and (2 , 2) theories are also discussed.
On the Geometry of N=2 Minkowski Vacua of Gauged N=2 Supergravity Theories in Four Dimensions

Abstract:Gauging isometries of four-dimensional N=2 supergravity theories yields an N=2 supersymmetric theory with a scalar potential. In this note, we study the well-known constraints for four-dimensional N=2 Minkowski vacua of such theories. We propose that classically a projective special Kähler submanifold of the projective Kähler target space of the ungauged theory describes the moduli space of the complex scalar fields of massless vector multiplets for N=2 Minkowski vacua configurations, which then receives quantum corrections from integrating out massive fields. Subloci of projective special Kähler manifolds appear as supersymmetric flux vacua in the context of type IIB Calabi-Yau threefold compactifications with background fluxes as well. While these flux vacua equations arise from the critical locus of an N=1 superpotential, we show that these equations can also be obtained from the N=2 supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum equations of gauged N=2 supergravity theories upon gauging suitable isometries in the semi-classical universal hypermultiplet sector of type IIB string Calabi-Yau threefold compactifications. Thus, we give an intrinsic N=2 supersymmetric interpretation to the flux vacua equations.

On Supergravity and Noncritical Strings

Abstract:Motivated by the long-term goal of finding holographic descriptions for ${\mathcal N}=1$ and ${\mathcal N}=2$ super QCD, we revisit the subject of ''noncritical'' superstring theory. Focusing on string models with 6d super Poincaré invariance, we provide a careful worldsheet derivation of the leading-order effective theories for the lowest modes. We identify them as $\textit{seven}$-dimensional, $\textit{maximally supersymmetric}$ gauged supergravities: the $SO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIA and the $ISO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIB. The same theories also arise as consistent truncations on $S^3$ of the 10d IIB and IIA supergravities, respectively, where the chirality flip is as expected from T-duality. These effective supergravities should be interpreted in the following sense. The noncritical string can be viewed as a special case of a discrete series of backgrounds labelled by an integer $k$ (which counts the number of NS5 branes in a certain duality frame); the ''noncritical'' value is $k=2$, while for $k \to \infty$ one recovers a weakly-curved 10d target space. The effective supergravities described here give an accurate description of the interactions among the lowest modes for $k \to \infty$, with higher derivative corrections suppressed by powers of $1/k$. We discuss BPS solutions of the 7d gauged supergravities and their uplift to 10d solutions. In particular, we find a novel class of solutions with RR flux, parametrized by a function of three variables that solves an elegant PDE. While we cannot solve the PDE in closed form except in trivial cases, we confirm that our solutions correspond to a 10d IIA Hanany-Witten setup with continuous distributions of both ''color'' D4 branes and ''flavor'' D6 branes.

Covariant Quantization of the Green-Schwarz Superstring in a Calabi-Yau Background

Abstract:After adding a scalar chiral boson to the usual superspace variables, the four-dimensional Green-Schwarz superstring is quantized in a manifestly SO(3,1) super-Poincaré covariant manner. The constraints are all first-class and form an N=2 superconformal algebra with $c=-3$. Since the Calabi-Yau degrees of freedom are described by an N=2 superconformal field theory with $c=9$, the combined Green-Schwarz and Calabi-Yau systems form the $c=6$ matter sector of a critical N=2 string. Using the standard N=2 super-Virasoro ghosts, a nilpotent BRST charge is defined and vertex operators for the massless supermultiplets are constructed. Four-dimensional superstring amplitudes can be calculated with manifest SO(3,1) super-Poincaré invariance by evaluating correlation functions of these BRST-invariant vertex operators on N=2 super-Riemann surfaces.

Abstract:We investigate the generalized gauge theory which has been proposed previously and show that in two dimensions the instanton gauge fixing of the generalized topological Yang-Mills action leads to a twisted N=2 supersymmetric action. We have found that the R-symmetry of N=2 supersymmetry can be identified with the flavour symmetry of Dirac-Kahler fermion formulation. Thus the procedure of twist allows topological ghost fields to be interpreted as the Dirac-Kahler matter fermions.

Abstract:We construct a lattice formulation of a mass-deformed two-dimensional N=(8,8) super Yang-Mills theory with preserving two supercharges exactly. Gauge fields are represented by compact unitary link variables, and the exact supercharges on the lattice are nilpotent up to gauge transformations and SU(2)_R rotations. Due to the mass deformation, the lattice model is free from the vacuum degeneracy problem, which was encountered in earlier approaches, and flat directions of scalar fields are stabilized giving discrete minima representing fuzzy S^2. Around the trivial minimum, quantum continuum theory is obtained with no tuning, which serves a nonperturbative construction of the IIA matrix string theory. Moreover, around the minimum of k-coincident fuzzy spheres, four-dimensional N=4 U(k) super Yang-Mills theory with two commutative and two noncommutative directions emerges. In this theory, sixteen supersymmetries are broken by the mass deformation to two. Assuming the breaking is soft, we give a scenario leading to undeformed N=4 super Yang-Mills on R^4 without any fine tuning. As an evidence for the validity of the assumption, some computation of 1-loop radiative corrections is presented.
