Abstract:Using 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-4-(trifluoromethyl) pyrimidine as main ligand and tetraphenylimidodiphosphinate as ancillary ligand, one iridium complex was synthesized. This complex shows a green emission peaking at 543 nm with a quantum efficiency yield as 48% in deareated CH2Cl2 solution. It also has good thermal stability with a decomposition temperature of 351 degrees C. Using this material as emitter, the organic light-emitting diode shows good performances with a maximum luminance 42 898 cd/m(2), a maximum current efficiency up to 54.29 cd/A with low efficiency roll-off. At the luminance of 5000 and 10 000 cd/m(2), the current efficiencies are still kept at 46.70 and 40.63 cd/A, respectively. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Aluminum(III) complexes with 8-hydroxyquinoline have attracted much attention because of their potential application in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) as green and blue emitting materials with the subtle effect of the substitution on the fluorescence and electroluminescent (EL) properties. The photoluminescence of aluminum(III) complexes [(tri(2′,2-dihydroxybiphenyl) aluminum(III)] have been studied as efficient fluorescence emitting materials [17]. In this paper, geometric and electronic properties of several Al complexes are studied to find the ligand effect related to the intensities of their absorptions and emissions using computational methods. In order to find a new highly efficient blue emitting materials, we have designed new Al complexes with aromatic ligands, [4,5-phenanthrenediol, 3,3′-dihydroxy-2,2′-binaphthalene, 2-(2′-phenol)-2-naphthol, and 1-(2′-phenol)-2-naphthol]. The geometry optimizations of the ground and the lowest excited electronic states were determined using HF/3-21G(d) and configuration interaction with single excitations (CIS) method. The vertical and adiabatic transition energies were calculated using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) with B1LYP/6-31G(d). As a result, we propose new blue fluorescent Al complexes of high luminescence efficiency.

Abstract:A novel binuclear aluminum(III) complex with acylpyrazolone derivative as ligands, bis(salicylidene-o-aminophenol)-bis(4-benzoyl-3-methyl-1-phenyl-2-pyrazolin-5-one)-bis-aluminum(III) [Al2(saph)2(PMBP)2] was designed and synthesized. A detailed study was carried out on its thermal stability, photophysical, electrochemical and electroluminescent properties. It was found that the introduction of 4-benzoyl-3-methyl-1-phenyl-2-pyrazolin-5-one (PMBP) ligands improved the thermal stability remarkably. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on this Al complex as the sole emitter and the host for red dopant were fabricated. Bright green-yellow emission was observed from the device using Al2(saph)2(PMBP)2 as the emitter and the electron transporting layer. Pure red emission peaked at 632nm was obtained from the Al2(saph)2(PMBP)2 doped with DCJTB [4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-tertbutyl-6(1,1,7,7,-tetramethyljulolidyl-9-enyl)-4H-pyran] device with a luminance efficiency of 1.51cd/A at 200A/m2. No light from Al2(saph)2(PMBP)2 was found, indicating that the matched energy levels provide an efficient red emission system in Al2(saph)2(PMBP)2 device. Those results demonstrated that Al2(saph)2(PMBP)2 might be a promising material for OLEDs.
Rational Design of Chelated Aluminum Complexes Toward Highly Efficient and Thermally Stable Electron-Transporting Materials

Abstract:Two novel chelated aluminum complexes, bis(2-methyl-8-quinolinato)(2,6-di(pyridin-3-yl)phenolato)Al(III) (BPyAlq) and bis(2-methyl-8-quinolinato)(2,4,w6-tri-(pyridin-3-yl)phenolato)Al(III) (TPyAlq), have been designed and synthesized by introducing the electron-withdrawing pyridine moieties into the ancillary ligand. Their single-crystal and molecular structures, thermal and photophysical properties, and electron-transporting (ET) capabilities were systematically investigated in comparison with the parent complex bis(2-methyl-8-quinolinato)(4-phenyl-phenolato)Al(III) (BAlq). The introduction of the pyridine moieties helps to not only greatly lower the LUMO and HOMO energy levels but also bring about extra strong intra- and intermolecular interactions, thus significantly improving the electron-injection (El) and ET capabilities of the involved materials. BPyAlq and TPyAlq exhibited significantly higher glass-transition temperatures (106 and 141 degrees C) than BAlq (92 degrees C). The electron-only devices based on 0, BPyAlq or TPyAlq showed more than 2 orders of magnitude higher current density than that of BAlq, indicating much higher ET/EI capabilities. Their excellent ET/Ei properties were investigated via the phosphorescent OLEDs using fac-tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium as the green emitter. The devices with BPyAlq and TPyAlq as an electron-transporting layer (ETL) demonstrated superior performance compared to those using BAlq, remarkably lowering the drive voltage and improving efficiencies. In particular, the green PhOLEDs with BPyAlq as an ETL exhibited the maximum current and external quantum efficiency of 59.8 cd A(-1), 17.3% with small efficiency roll-off.
Thermochemically Stable Liquid-Crystalline Gold(I) Complexes Showing Enhanced Room Temperature Phosphorescence

Abstract:Gold(I) complexes are some of the most attractive materials for generating aggregation-induced emission (AIE), enabling the realization of novel light-emitting applications such as chemo-sensors, bio-sensors, cell imaging, and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this study, we propose a rational design of luminescent gold complexes to achieve both high thermochemical stability and intense room temperature phosphorescence, which are desirable features in practical luminescent applications. Here, a series of gold(I) complexes with ligands of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) derivatives and/or acetylide were synthesized. Detailed characterization revealed that the incorporation of NHC ligands could increase the molecular thermochemical stability, as the decomposition temperature was increased to ~300 °C. We demonstrate that incorporation of both NHC and acetylide ligands enables us to generate gold(I) complexes exhibiting both high thermochemical stability and high room-temperature phosphorescence quantum yield (>40%) under ambient conditions. Furthermore, we modified the length of alkoxy chains at ligands, and succeeded in synthesizing a liquid crystalline gold(I) complex while maintaining the relatively high thermochemical stability and quantum yield.

Abstract:A novel ligand, 4-diphenylamino-benzoic acid (HDPAB), and the corresponding Tb (III) complex, Tb (DPAB)3 which can be dissolved easily in organic solvents were synthesized and characterized. Organic electroluminescent (EL) device with a structure of indium tin oxide (ITO)/poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK): Tb (DPAB)3 (50wt%, 80nm)/1,3,5-tris-(N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzene (TPBI) (30nm)/tri(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum (AlQ) (20nm)/LiF (1nm)/Al (150nm) in which Tb (DPAB)3 acted as an emitter were fabricated. The maximum luminance of 230cdm−2 at 20V and the maximum efficiency of 0.62cdA−1 were obtained due to the introduction of hole-transporting group, representing the best result to date among Tb (III) carboxylate complexes based EL devices. These results indicate that modifications of rare earth complexes are a promising way to improve the properties of EL devices.
From Deep Blue to Green Emitting and Ultralong Fluorescent Copper(i) Halide Complexes Containing Dimethylthiophene Diphosphine and PPh3 Ligands.

Abstract:Highly emissive copper(i) halide complexes having thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) have been paid much attention. Here, a series of four-coordinate mononuclear copper(i) halide complexes containing both bi- and mono-phosphine ligands, [CuX(dpmt)(PPh3)] (dpmt = 3,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)-2,5-dimethylthiophene, X = I (1), Br (2) and Cl (3)), were synthesized, and their molecular structures and photophysical properties were investigated. These complexes exhibit intense deep blue emission in crystal state at room temperature and have peak wavelengths at 447-460 nm with microsecond lifetimes (τ = 114-752 μs). Emission color can be largely tuned from deep blue to green, from crystal to film state at 293 K. The emission of the complexes 1-3 mainly originates from intraligand and LLCT transitions. Solution-processed, nondoped and doped devices of complex 3 exhibit yellowish green emission with CIE(x, y) of (0.3557, 0.5031). The nondoped device gives a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 2.47% and a maximum luminance of 316 cd m-2.
New Highly Phosphorescent Heteroleptic Tris-Cyclometalated Iridium (iii) Complexes: Synthesis and Photophysical Characterization

Abstract:New heteroleptic tris-cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes (ppy)2 Ir(LX) (ppy==2-phenylpyridine, LX==Sal (salicylic acid), Msal (4-methylsalicylic acid), FSal(4-trifluoro methyl salicylic acid)) was synthesized and characterized. The molecular structure, photophysical properties and thermal stability were tested and analyzed. The results show that the absorption peaks were located around 270, 370, 450 and 484 nm respectively at room temperature. The two former peaks at 270 and 370 nm should belong to 1pi--pi* transition at ppy and transition from salicylic acid ligands to 2-phenylpyridine; The peaks around 450 and 484 nm can be assigned to the charge transfer transition from Ir to ligand (1MLCT and 3MLCT) and 3pi--pi* transition respectively. The PL emission peaks were located at 520, 522, and 510 nm, respectively. The emission of (ppy), Ir(Sal) and (ppy), Ir (MSal) was mainly ascribed to the radiation transition of triple state 3MLCT, while the emission of (ppy)2 Ir(FSal) was mainly from the radiation transition between Sal and ppy, partly from the radiation transition of single state 1MLCT and triple state 3MLCT. The quantum efficiencies of these complexes were 0.37, 0.33 and 0.29 respectively. The thermal decomposition temperature was from 306 to 328 degrees C. (ppy)2 Ir(LX), being a series of efficient phosphorescent materials with good thermal stability, can be used in the organic electroluminescent devices.

Abstract:A new iridium complex containing two 2-(thiophen-2-yl)quinoline ligands and one single monoanionic ligand 1,3-diphenyl-4-phenylacetyl-5-pyrazolone was designed and synthesized. Its photophysical, electrochemical and electrophosphorescence properties were investigated. The iridium complex in solution showed characteristic phosphorescence with a high quantum efficiency of 19% and lifetime of 0.67 vs. Importantly, a saturated red polymer-based electrophosphorescent device with high external quantum efficiency of 8.5% and CIE coordinate of (0.64, 0.33) was fabricated by using this complex as dopant. Abstract:A novel tridentate ligand N-(6-(diphenylphosphoryl)pyridin-2-yl)-2,2,2-trifluoroacetamide (DPPOPFA) was designed and synthesized. Crystal structure of the ligand revealed the “keto” form of ligand in solid state other than the “enol” one, and it was also found that two kinds of molecules with different conformations were connected by hydrogen bonding between amide N–H and phosphoryl P=O. This ionic ligand was used to coordinate a variety of lanthanide ions, forming neutral 3:1 complexes. Absolute overall quantum yields of these complexes in solid states were 36% for Eu(III), 29% for Tb(III) and 3% for Dy(III) with lifetimes of 1.1, 1.1 and 0.087 ms, respectively. The complexes had excellent thermal stability and did not decompose till 370 °C. And they could sublimate in vacuum (1×10−4 Pa) at 330 °C due to the weak molecular interaction.

Abstract:Inspired by the emissive features of ZnII complexes based on bis-Schiff base ligands, bis-ZnII salphen complexes bearing pyridyl functionalized ligands have been successfully synthesized. Their photophysical features, electrochemical behavior and electroluminescent (EL) properties have been investigated in detail. The functionalized bis-ZnII salphen complexes can exhibit high thermal stability up to 417 °C, and their photoluminescence (PL) spectra show a maximal emission wavelength peak at ca. 565 nm both in solution and PMMA doped films. The PL investigation of the neat films for these functionalized bis-ZnII salphen complexes indicated that the pyridyl functionalized ligands can effectively reduce the degree of molecular aggregation to enhance their emission intensity. Taking advantage of the charge carrier injection/transporting ability of the pyridyl functionalized ligands and their dendritic design, the optimized EL devices fabricated by a simple solution-processing method can achieve a peak luminance (Lmax) of 3589 cd m-2, a maximal external quantum efficiency (ηext) of 1.46%, a maximal current efficiency (ηL) of 4.1 cd A-1 and a maximal power efficiency (ηp) of 3.8 lm W-1. These results should afford important instructions for exploiting high performance fluorescent emitters based on dinuclear ZnII complexes.

Abstract:The ability of materials to exhibit efficient fluorescence in both solution and aggregated states opens up new possibilities for their application in areas where both solution-based and solid-state emissions are essential. In this study, we developed a luminescent molecule and conducted investigations into its thermal stability, liquid crystal properties, absorption, and emission behavior. The studied material possesses a simple molecular structure and demonstrates high thermal stability and liquid crystallinity. It also exhibits high emission quantum yield in various states, including crystals, liquid crystals, and liquids, while maintaining stable emission even at high temperatures. The molecule also emitted blue linearly polarized light. This unique combination of features can be attributed to factors such as the rigidity of the molecular structure, the intermolecular interactions of the fluorophore, and the presence of specific functional groups that enhance both thermal stability and emission behavior. The molecule's unique properties have significant potential for various applications in optoelectronics, sensors, displays, and photonics, with a particular emphasis on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and photovoltaics.

Abstract:A highly efficient and thermally stable manganese halide crystal, MnI2(XanPO) is demonstrated. The low electron–phono coupling along with rigid crystal structure contributes to excellent photoluminescent quantum yield of 94% with unprecedented near zero thermal quenching from 4 to 623 K. The crystals find their applications in light emitting diodes and micro light emitting diodes with excellent external quantum efficiency (EQE) up to 22.7% and power efficacy as high as 102.5 lm W−1. The phosphor‐converted light‐emitting diode (PC‐LED) has become an indispensable solid‐state lighting and display technologies in the modern society. Nevertheless, the use of scarce rare‐earth elements and the thermal quenching (TQ) behavior are still two most crucial issues yet to be solved. Here, this work successfully demonstrates a highly efficient and thermally stable green emissive MnI2(XanPO) crystals showing a notable photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 94% and a super TQ resistance from 4 to 623 K. This unprecedented superior thermal stability is attributed to the low electron–phonon coupling and the unique rigid crystal structure of MnI2(XanPO) over the whole temperature range based on the temperature‐dependent photoluminescence (PL) and single crystal X‐ray diffraction (SCXRD) analyses. Considering these appealing properties, green PC‐LEDs with a power efficacy of 102.5 lm W−1, an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 22.7% and a peak luminance up to 7750 000 cd m−2 are fabricated by integrating MnI2(XanPO) with commercial blue LEDs. Moreover, the applicability of MnI2(XanPO) in both micro‐LEDs and organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) is also demonstrated. In a nutshell, this study uncovers a candidate of highly luminescent and TQ resistant manganese halide suitable for a variety of emission applications.

Abstract:Bis-salicylaldiminato zinc complexes with four new salicylaldiminato ligands: (Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=C6H4 (2a); Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=3,5-tBu2C6H2 (2b); Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=5-BrC6H3 (2c); Ar1=7-(2,4-Me2)C9H4N, Ar2=3,5-Br2C6H2 (2d)) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, 1H, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy. The molecular structure of complex 2b was confirmed by X-ray crystallography, showing intermolecular π–π interactions in the solid state. These complexes produce bright fluorescence in both solution and the solid state. In addition, the emission color in solution can be tuned in the range 503–532nm by the modification of the salicylaldiminato ligand.

Abstract:The efficient broad-band emission from low-dimensional metal halides has garnered significant interest. However, most of these materials exhibit poor stability at the operating temperature of light-emitting diodes. In this study, using the solution method (temperature lower than 90 °C), a new compound (NH(4))(3)In(0.95)Sb(0.05)Cl(6) was obtained with the structure in the Pnma space group featuring unit-cell parameters of a = 12.3871(4) Å, b = 24.9895(9) Å, and c = 7.7844(3) Å....

Abstract:The energy band structures of two promising organic light-emitting compounds, Al(Saph-q) [(salicylidene-o-aminophenolato) (8-quinolinoato) aluminum] and Al(azb-q) [(o,o'-dihydroxyazobenzene) (8-quinolinoato)aluminum], were investigated using the approaches of density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/ 6-31G*//3-21G* level, and the projected density of states (PDOS). The predicted maximum absorption wavelengths, 392 nm for Al(Saph-q) and 496 nm for Al(azb-q), were in good agreement with the experimentally determined, 420 nm and 504 nm. The different bridge atoms make considerable varieties of the frontier orbitals. The results were reasonably expounded via a detailed analysis of the electronic structure.
