Abstract:We obtain existence an multiplicity of harmonic and subharmonic solutions to the periodically forced nonlinear Duffing′s equation x″ + g(x) = p(t) in the semi-linear case: 0 < A ≤ g(x)/x ≤ B < + ∞, for |x| large. We introduce new conditions of nonresonance with respect to the spectrum of the associated linear differential operator x↦ −x″ and show, by some nonlinear counterexamples, that the results are sharp.

Abstract:We consider two classes of elliptic resonant problems. First, by local linking theory, we study the double-double resonant case and obtain three solutions. Second, we introduce some new conditions and compute the critical groups both at zero and at infinity precisely. Combining Morse theory, we get three solutions for the completely resonant case.

Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of nontrivial 2π-periodic solutions of asymptotically linear Hamiltonian systems. We consider the case of resonance both at zero and at infinity, and we permit time-dependent asymptotic matrices. Our main tools are an infinite dimensional cohomology theory and a corresponding Morse theory recently constructed by W. Kryszewski and the first author. We develop a method to compute the new critical groups.

Abstract:For a Hamiltonian system, in which the Hamiltonian is assumed to have an asymptotically linear gradient, the existence of nontrivial periodic solutions is proved under the assumption that the linearized operators have distinct Maslov indices at 0 and at infinity. Both the linearized operators may be degenerate. In particular, the results cover the “strong resonance” case.

Abstract:Reference [1] established an index theory for a class of linear selfadjoint operator equations covering both second order linear Hamiltonian systems and first order linear Hamiltonian systems as special cases. In this paper based upon this index theory we construct a new reduced functional to investigate multiple solutions for asymptotically linear operator equations by Morse theory. The functional is defined on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space, is twice differentiable and has a finite Morse index. Investigating critical points of this functional by Morse theory gives us a unified way to deal with nontrivial solutions of both asymptotically second order Hamiltonian systems and asymptotically first order Hamiltonian systems.

Abstract:We consider a second-order equation of Duffing type. Bounds for the derivative of the restoring force are given which ensure the existence and uniqueness of a periodic solution. Furthermore, the unique periodic solution is asymptotically stable with sharp rate of exponential decay. In particular, for a restoring term independent of the variable $t$, a necessary and sufficient condition is obtained which guarantees the existence and uniqueness of a periodic solution that is stable.

The Dirac operator is unbounded from below and above, so the associated energy functional is strongly indefinite. By using linking theorem for strongly indefinite functionals, we obtain a new multiplicity result of solutions when the nonlinearity has asymptotic quadratic growth.</p>
