Using this new concept, we establish some results about Asplund spaces and generic Fréchet differentiability of continuous convex functions on non-Asplund spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, an extended real-valued proper lower semicontinuous convex functionfon a Banach space is said to have the Fréchet differentiability property (FDP) if every proper lower semicontinuous convex functiongwithg≤fis Fréchet differentiable on a denseGδsubset of intdomg, the interior of the effective domain ofg. We show thatfhas the FDP if and only if thew*-closed convex hull of the image of the subdifferential map offhas the Radon–Nikodým property. This is a generalization of the main theorem in a paper by Lixin and Shuzhong (to appear). According to this result, it also gives several new criteria of Asplund spaces.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a smooth set in a locally convex topological vector space and extend Asplund's result on the strong differentiability space. We also establish Gateaux differentiability of a continuous convex function in a locally convex topological vector space. In particular, we extend Mazur's classical theorem on Gateaux differentiability from a separable Banach space to a separable locally convex topological vector space.

Suppose that for each x ∈ X and each weak neighborhood V of zero in X * there exists δ > 0 such that ∂ f(y)⊂∂ f(x)+V for all y∈ X with y-x<δ. Then every continuous convex function g with g ⩽ f on X is generically Fréchet differentiable. If, in addition, lim_x→∞f(x)=∞ , then X is an Asplund space.

Abstract:Recently, a sequence of articles studied the Frechet differentiability property of convex functions on general Banach spaces and even on topological linear spaces. Cheng et al introduced the notion of the FDP (Frechet differentiability property) of convex functions: an extended real valued proper convex function f on a Banach space E is said to have the FDP if every continuous convex function g with g≤f on E is Frechet differentiable on a dense Gδ subset of E. This paper mainly shows that all such continuous convex functions f on the space E are exactly all continuous convex functions on a locally convex space (E, τ) for some suitably locally convex topology τ, that the space (E, τ) is normable if and only if E is an Asplund space. It also presents a revised version of the main theorems of Cheng et al.

Abstract:Given a closed convex set A in a Banach space X, motivated by the continuity and Fre'\chet differentiability of A introduced, respectively, in [D. Gale and V. Klee, Math. Scand., 7 (1959), pp. 379--391] and [X. Y. Zheng, SIAM J. Optint., 30 (2020), pp. 490--512], this paper considers the CP-differentiability, subdifferentiability, and Ga<^>\teaux differentiability of A. Using the technique of variational analysis, it is proved that A is CP-differentiable (resp., subdifferentiable or Ga<^>\teaux differentiable) if and only if for every continuous convex function f : X-o J with infxEA f (x) > infxEX f (x) the corresponding constrained optimization problem PA(f) is 2/p-order -well-posed solvable (resp., generalized well-posed solvable or weak well-posed solvable). It is also proved that if the conjugate function f* of a continuous convex function f on X is CP-differentiable on dom(f *), then for every closed convex set A in X with infxEA f (x) > ooo the corresponding opti-mization problem PA(f) is 2/p-order-well-posed solvable. As a byproduct, every constrained convex optimization problem with a strongly convex quadratic objective function is proved to be globally second-order-well-posed solvable. Our main results are new even in the case of finite dimensional spaces.
Asplund spaces and the finest locally convex topology

Abstract:In our previous paper we systematized several known equivalent definitions of Fréchet (G\^ ateaux) Differentiability Spaces and Asplund (weak Asplund) Spaces. As an application, we extended the classical Mazur's theorem, and also proved that the product of any family of Banach spaces $(E_{\alpha})$ is an Asplund lcs if and only if each $E_{\alpha}$ is Asplund. The actual work continues this line of research in the frame of locally convex spaces, including the classes of Fréchet spaces (i.e. metrizable and complete locally convex spaces) and projective limits, quojections, $(LB)$-spaces and $(LF)$-spaces, as well as, the class of free locally convex spaces $L(X)$ over Tychonoff spaces $X$. First we prove some "negative" results: We show that for every infinite Tychonoff space $X$ the space $L(X)$ is not even a G\^ ateaux Differentiability Space (GDS in short) and contains no infinite-dimensional Baire vector subspaces. On the other hand, we show that all barrelled GDS spaces are quasi-Baire spaces, what implies that strict $(LF)$-spaces are not GDS. This fact refers, for example, to concrete important spaces $D^{m}(\Omega)$, $D(\Omega)$, $D(\mathbb{R}^{\omega})$. A special role of the space $\varphi$, i.e. an $\aleph_{0}$-dimensional vector space equipped with the finest locally convex topology, in this line of research has been distinguished and analysed. It seems that little is known about the Asplund property for Fréchet spaces. We show however that a quojection $E$, i.e. a Fréchet space which is a strict projective limit of the corresponding Banach spaces $E_n$, is an Asplund (weak Asplund) space if and only if each Banach space $E_n$ is Asplund (weak Asplund). In particular, every reflexive quojection is Asplund. Some applications and several illustrating examples are provided.

By spectral analysis, it is shown that the associated solution semigroup of this equation is eventually differentiable.

Abstract:We consider the optimization problem $(P_{A})$ $\inf_{x\in X}\{f(x)+g(Ax)\}$ where $f$ and $g$ are proper convex functions defined on locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces $X$ and $Y$, respectively, and $A$ is a linear operator from $X$ to $Y$. By using the properties of the epigraph of the conjugated functions, some sufficient and necessary conditions for the strong Fenchel duality and the strong converse Fenchel duality of $(P_{A})$ are provided. Sufficient and necessary conditions for the stable Fenchel duality and for the total Fenchel duality are also derived.

Abstract:For locally convex spaces, we systematize several known equivalent definitions of Fréchet (G\^ ateaux) Differentiability Spaces and Asplund (Weak Asplund) Spaces. As an application, we extend the classical Mazur's theorem as follows: Let $E$ be a separable Baire locally convex space and let $Y$ be the product $\prod_{\alpha\in A} E_{\alpha}$ of any family of separable Fréchet spaces; then the product $E \times Y$ is Weak Asplund. Also, we prove that the product $Y$ of any family of Banach spaces $(E_{\alpha})$ is an Asplund locally convex space if and only if each $E_{\alpha}$ is Asplund. Analogues of both results are valid under the same assumptions, if $Y$ is the $\Sigma$-product of any family $(E_{\alpha})$.

Abstract:We consider the DC (difference of two convex functions) optimization problem (P) inf (x is an element of X){(f(1)(x) - f(2)(x) + (g(1)(Ax) - g(2)(Ax))}, where f(1), f(2), g(1), and g(2) are proper convex functions defined on locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces X and Y, and A is a linear continuous operator from X to Y. Adopting different tactics, two types of the Fenchel dual problems of (P) are given. By using the properties of the epigraph of the conjugate functions, some sufficient and necessary conditions for the weak duality of (P) are provided. Sufficient and/or necessary conditions for the strong Fenchel duality, the stable Fenchel duality, and the stable total duality are derived.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove Frechet differentiability of the metric projection operator onto closed balls, closed and convex cylinders and positives cones in uniformly convex and uniformly smooth Banach spaces. With respect to these closed and convex subsets, we find the exact expressions for Frechet derivatives and Gateaux directional derivatives of the metric projection operator.
