Abstract:The speech transmission index (STI) is obtained from architecture acoustic design software Odeon for 55 listening position with three methods. The results are compared and analyzed. It is proved that STI obtained from early decay time (EDT) is more reliable than that from reverberation time (T_(30)).

Abstract:This paper aims to explore the influence factors of speech intelligibility and the applicability of the speech transmission index (STI) in large spaces, where the sound energy is unevenly distributed and non-exponentially decays. The subjective speech intelligibility tests were conducted in Mandarin (China mainland) in two large spaces with volumes of 97,000 m3 and 246,000 m3. Objective indicators such as the Reverberation Time (RT), Early Decay Time (EDT), Definition (D50), and Speech Transmission Index (STI) under different signal-to-noise ratio (SNRs) were also measured in these two spaces. The results showed that both the SNR and room acoustics had significant effect on the speech intelligibility in these two spaces, but the effect of room acoustics on speech intelligibility was also affected by SNR. The speech intelligibility scores significantly increased with the increase in SNR when the SNR was less than 14.4 dB. In terms of room acoustics, D50 was more relevant to speech intelligibility than RT and EDT in these two large spaces when SNR ranged from −5dB to 15 dB. The STI value in large spaces should not be used as in ordinary spaces to evaluate the speech intelligibility. Based on the tests in this paper, the corresponding relation between STI and speech intelligibility in large spaces was modified, and a new rating threshold of STI was also proposed according to the revised relation, which indicated a necessity to modify the rating criteria of using STI to predict speech intelligibility in large spaces.

Abstract:Good speech intelligibility is the primary goal of acoustic environment control in lecture rooms and auditoria. The speech transmission index (STI) is the primary objective evaluation metric for speech intelligibility. Therefore, accurate prediction of the STI during the design stage is important for acoustic environment control in lecture rooms and auditoria. Two types of STI prediction methods based on simulated impulse responses and statistical are recommended by the IEC standard. In this study, the prediction accuracy and influencing factors of these two types of prediction methods were systematically analysed using STI measurements collected at 25 receiver positions in six rooms. The results reveal the following. (1) When the influence of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is not considered, for the STI prediction method based on simulated impulse responses, the prediction accuracy is in an acceptable range with the average predicted STI discrepancy of the 25 receiver positions being −0.004 and the maximum discrepancy being 0.046. For the STI prediction method based on statistical, the average predicted STI discrepancy of the 25 receiver positions was −0.015, and the maximum discrepancy was −0.091. STI prediction based on statistical exhibited a larger prediction error at the receiver positions close to the sound source and smaller prediction error at the receiver positions farther away from the sound source. (2) When the influence of the SNR was considered, the errors of both prediction methods increased significantly. For the STI prediction method based on simulated impulse responses, the average predicted STI discrepancy of the 25 receiver positions was −0.035 and the maximum discrepancy was −0.088. For the STI prediction method based on statistical, the average predicted STI discrepancy of the 25 receiver positions was −0.030 and the maximum discrepancy was −0.112. (3) Using a sound source that is different from the onsite measurement sound source can induce noticeable errors in both methods. (4) For the STI prediction method based on statistical using the actual Q value of the sound source, the prediction accuracy of receiver positions close to the sound source can be significantly improved and the effect on receiver positions farther away from the sound source is relatively small. (5) Both methods require significant technical expertise from users, rendering it difficult to obtain accurate prediction results during the design stage.

Abstract:Accurate measurement of acoustic insertion loss has important applications in evaluating the performance of acoustic filtering material. In a typical procedure for insertion loss measurement, two pulses are recorded: one without and one with the specimen inserted between the transmitters and receivers. The amplitude spectra of the two pulses are then used to determine the insertion loss, which is a function of frequency. The measurement with low frequencies is quite difficult because of the reverberation interference, which is induced by the sides of vessel where the absorption materials cannot work well and fail to produce an acoustic free field environment. This presentation presents a method which uses time reversal (TR) focusing technique to measure the insertion loss of acoustic filtering materials. The experiment results in a waveguide water tank show that the approach can achieve high signal-to-reverberation ratio in the measurement. Besides, TR focusing provides high resolution at the place of the specimen which reduces the requirement of the specimen size. Abstract:Objective assessment of speech intelligibility is a complex task that requires taking into account a number of factors such as different perception of each speech sub-bands by the human hearing sense or different physical properties of each frequency band of a speech signal. Currently, the state-of-the-art method used for assessing the quality of speech transmission is the speech transmission index (STI). It is a standardized way of objectively measuring the quality of, e.g., an acoustical adaptation of conference rooms or public address systems. The wide use of this measure and implementation of this method on numerous measurement devices make STI a popular choice when the speech-related quality of rooms has to be estimated. However, the STI measure has a significant drawback which excludes it from some particular use cases. For instance, if one would like to enhance speech intelligibility by employing a nonlinear digital processing algorithm, the STI method is not suitable to measure the impact of such an algorithm, as it requires that the measurement signal should not be altered in a nonlinear way. Consequently, if a nonlinear speech enhancing algorithm has to be tested, the STI-a standard way of estimating speech transmission cannot be used. In this work, we would like to propose a method based on the STI method but modified in such a way that it makes it possible to employ it for the estimation of the performance of the nonlinear speech intelligibility enhancement method. The proposed approach is based upon a broadband comparison of cumulated energy of the transmitted envelope modulation and the received modulation, so we called it broadband STI (bSTI). Its credibility with regard to signals altered by the environment or nonlinear speech changed by a DSP algorithm is checked by performing a comparative analysis of ten selected impulse responses for which a baseline value of STI was known.

Abstract:An algorithm using numerical value filter is introduced to pre-process original speech signal before inputting it into the speech encoder of TETRA. Using this algorithm the formant effect caused by the track in the process of pitch detection can be removed effectively. Instead of traditional pre-processing in TETRA encoder, another more effective algorithm consisting of average value deduction, low-pass filter and numerical value filter is further proposed. Normal speech, speech with pitch dithering and speech background noise have been used to test the performance of the optimized algorithm, Speech signal after processed by both proposed algorithms presented obvious periodicity in time domain. At the same time, effect of the formant in frequency domain can also be suppressed effectively.

Abstract:On the base of analyzing transmission principle of periodic data in EPA network deeply,the paper discussed communication delay composition of periodic data in end-to-end transmission process of EPA network and end treatment process.And it took a typical EPA network composed of micronet segments as an example to do quantitative calculation of communication delay of periodic data of EPA network, so as to get real-time indexes which EPA network could reach.It also pointed out measures to improve real-time performance of EPA network.

Abstract:In this paper an intellectualized and integrated testing system of FM broadcast is devised and exploited to satisfy with the requirement of digital video broadcast development.Using high speed DSP processing system,it realizes automatic testing of eleven running technology indexes according to different configuration of system,such as the frequency response of broadcast transmitter,distortion degree,SNR,and so on.the real testing results show that the technology indexes of the system achieve domestic one-up level.What′s more,the repeating quality and reliability is favorable.

Abstract:The speech intelligibility index (SII) and speech transmission index (STI) are widely accepted objective metrics for assessing speech intelligibility. In previous work, the relationship between STI and Chinese speech intelligibility (CSI) scores was studied. In this paper, the relationship between SII and CSI scores in rooms for the elderly aged 60–69 and over 70 is investigated by using auralization method under different background noise levels (40dBA and 55dBA) and different reverberation times. The results show that SII has good correlation with CSI score of the elderly. To get the same CSI score as the young adults, the elderly need a larger SII value, and the value increases with the increase of the age for the elderly. Since hearing loss of the elderly is considered in the calculation of SII, the difference in the required SII between the elderly and young is less than that of the required STI under the same CSI score condition. This indicates that SII is a more consistent evaluation criterion for different ages.

A Time-Weighted Method for Predicting the Intelligibility of Speech in the Presence of Interfering Sounds

Abstract:The speech intelligibility index (SII) has been widely used as an objective method of predicting speech intelligibility, but its traditional form is most effective predicting speech intelligibility scores under stationary noise but not more challenging conditions (e.g., competing noise interference). To address this limitation, the present work extended the SII model to predict the intelligibility of speech in both steady speech-spectral noise (SSN) and dual-talker speech (DTS), by using a time-weighted function that accounted for the relative perceptual importance of vowels and consonants in speech intelligibility. The performance of the new time-weighted SII (TW-SII) was compared to the other two well-known methods, i.e., the time-averaged SII (TA-SII) and coherence SII (CSII). Experimental results showed the intelligibility prediction accuracy of the three methods was similar for speech in SSN, but the prediction by TW-SII was more accurate than those by TA-SII and CSII for speech in DTS. The possible applications and limitations of the present intelligibility model were analyzed and discussed.
Blind estimation of room acoustic parameters from speech signals based on extended model of room impulse response

Abstract:The speech transmission index (STI) and room acoustic parameters (RAPs), which are derived from a room impulse response (RIR), such as reverberation time and early decay time, are essential to assess speech transmission and to predict the listening difficulty in a sound field. Since it is difficult to measure RIR in daily occupied spaces, simultaneous blind estimation of STI and RAPs must be resolved as it is an imperative and challenging issue. This paper proposes a deterministic method for blindly estimating STI and five RAPs on the basis of an RIR stochastic model that approximates an unknown RIR. The proposed method formulates a temporal power envelope of a reverberant speech signal to obtain the optimal parameters for the RIR model. Simulations were conducted to evaluate STI and RAPs from observed reverberant speech signals. The root-mean-square errors between the estimated and ground-truth results were used to comparatively evaluate the proposed method with the previous method. The results showed that the proposed method can estimate STI and RAPs effectively without any training.

Abstract:As a simplification of the reverberation time (RT) measurement method using integrated impulse response method (IIRM),it is suggested that the decay rate of measured impulse response could be directly used to calculate the RT. The simplified method could be named impulse response decay method (IRDM). In this paper, the two methods, IIRM and IRDM, are compared, mainly focusing on the stability of the methods. The reason of why the IIRM seems more stable than the IRDM is explained.

Abstract:The technology of space time coded continuous phase modulation (STC CPM) has aroused considerable attention recently in wireless communication systems for improving the capacity and data rate without bandwidth expansion. Symbol timing synchronization is an important issue in such systems. In this paper, a data aided symbol timing estimation algorithm was proposed for burst mode STC CPM systems over Rayleigh fading channels. A training sequence is embedded before transmission of each packet. The receiver first adds the signals from different receive antennas and then calculates the digital Fourier transformation (DFT) of the phase of the one symbol differential signal of the sum. The initial symbol timing offset can be estimated from the phase of the tone component of the DFT outputs. MATLAB simulation results show that the variance of the timing estimation error is very small in slow Rayleigh flat fading channels and frequency selective fading channels and the degradation of frame error rate (FER) is significantly small under the condition of non ideal synchronization. This algorithm is suitable for any numbers of transmit and receive antennas and can estimate the timing offset rapidly and accurately in STC CPM systems.
Binaural speech transmission index with spatialized virtual speaker in near field: Distance and direction dependence

Abstract:As well as background noise and reverberation, speaker-to-listener relative location affects the binaural speech transmission index (BSTI) considerably, especially in the near field. To highlight how speaker location influences the BSTI, binaural room impulse responses measured in a low-reverberation listening room are used to obtain the BSTI indirectly and analyze its near-field dependence on distance and direction. The results show that the BSTI based on the better-ear rule is higher when the virtual speaker is located laterally rather than in the anterior or posterior. When the distance-dependent intensity factor is introduced, the distance is the dominant factor, not the azimuth.

Abstract:A reverberation time (RT) estimation method is presented which consists of three steps, the anechoic speech is first recovered by maximizing the skewness of the linear prediction residual of the reverberant speech, then room impulse response (RIR) is identified using the recovered anechoic and reverberant speech, finally RIR is truncated to compensate the estimation errors and RT is estimated using the Schroeder's method. Simulations show that the proposed method successfully estimates RT less than 1.4 s and is insensitive to the speech content such as the number of long pauses and sharp offsets.

Abstract:The understanding of communications between passengers in an automobile as well as vehicle information systems to the driver is critical. A comprehensive study was conducted to evaluate speech intelligibility inside a vehicle for person to person communication using the Speech Transmission Index (STI). This metric provides a measure of the understanding or intelligibility of speech and has a value which varies from 0 for completely unintelligible to 1 for perfect intelligibility. For this study, several vehicle operating conditions, road surfaces and talker and listener configurations were compared in terms of the STI metric to gain a better understanding of these influences on in-vehicle person to person communication. Individual contributions of background noise and interior vehicle acoustics to the STI were also investigated. The results of this study found that higher in-vehicle sound pressure levels from engine and road noise are not necessarily associated with lower speech intelligibility. A wide range of STI values considered to be significant from subjective descriptions of intelligibility provided in the IEC EN 60268-16:2003 standard corresponding to those values were observed. These observations were for particular vehicle operating conditions, various configurations of the talker and the listener locations inside the vehicle, as well as between the ears of the listener at any particular location inside the vehicle. It was found that the rate of change of STI varied in unsteady background noise due to variable speed operation, at any given speed. It is recommended that subjective testing in a simulated vehicle environment be pursued to investigate any correlation of results with the STI metric. Also recommended is to determine the significance of the findings in terms of human perception of speech intelligibility inside a vehicle, and further investigate the appropriateness of using the STI metric, which is one of the most comprehensive speech intelligibility metrics available for a complete assessment of factors influencing in-vehicle person to person communication. Lastly, the effects of reverberation on reducing speech intelligibility were found to be negligible.

Abstract:In this study, two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain analysis was used to investigate sound transmission loss (STL) of porous materials with different incident angles. This method has provided evidence for the feasibility of measuring STL in situ using one particle velocity–pressure sensor and one pressure sensor. In the numerical analysis, the total sound pressure and the vertical component of the total particle velocity at the incident side of the material were used to separate incident and reflected components. The STL was calculated using the separated sound pressure at the incident side and the sound pressure at the transmitted side of the porous material. The STL calculated from simulation agrees with theoretical values at all incident angles investigated.

Abstract:A new endpoint detection method based on the exponential threshold(ET) is proposed.The probability density function(PDF) of the shorttime energy is investigated,and a new consistent mathematical model is built up for the speech and the noise.Then,an optimal detection threshold exponential formula is concluded.Experimental evaluations on 863 program of China across a wide range of SNRs are given.Results show that when the SNR is 0 dB,the accuracy achieves 89.5%,and when the SNR is 0-15 dB,the ET method has good performances than the basic energy,the logarithmic energy clustering(LEC) and χ~2 methods.

Abstract:We have found an unprecedented memory of macromolecular helicity induced in an achiral sodium salt of poly(4-carboxyphenyl isocyanide) (poly-1-Na). Poly-1-Na folds into a one-handed helix through configurational isomerization around the C=N backbones by interactions with optically active amines in water. The helix remains when the optically active amines are completely removed, and further modifications of the side group to carboxy and esters can be possible without loss of the macromolecular helicity memory.

Abstract:Base on the analysis of the national standards on field sound insulation measurement using loudspeaker source,an improved method which put a sound source at several points instead of a single point is proposed.In the proposed method,a loudspeaker source is placed at several appropriate points with different angles and the corresponding transmission losses are tested respectively to obtain the average transmission loss.Experimental results show that the results obtained by putting a loudspeaker source at several appropriate points can reflect field sound transmission loss better than that of using a single point.Furthermore,the improved method has better consistence,and the experiment condition can be easily controlled.

Abstract:The image source (IS) method is a commonly used geometrical acoustics simulation technique in room and virtual acoustics. In particular, it has been used in the analysis of room reverberation under different choices of geometry and wall conditions. Under a simple rectangular parallelepipedal geometry, reverberation time is known to be dependent on the direction of arrival of reflections relative to the room axes. In this article, a closed-form expression for the directional energy decay and reverberation time is derived, which is valid in the late response, and may be used in the case of either angle-independent or angle-dependent reflection. The expression reduces to an easily evaluated formula in the case of an omnidirectional energy decay curve (EDC). Various numerical results are presented, including the validation of the closed-form expression against EDCs and late reverberation times drawn directly from the IS method.
