Abstract:Infrasound has been widely used for observation of associated events such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, etc. The relatively low acoustic attenuation allows infrasound to transmit for a long distance from sources to propagate in the atmosphere at frequencies between 1 and 20 Hz and to be recorded regionally or globally. In addition, numerous data telemetered from the booming global networks of infrasound stations supply us a better understanding of the infrasound generation mechanism and remote effects of earthquakes. Recent efforts in source identification focus on the calculation methods of infrasonic data, considering propagation conditions including profiles of sound velocity and wind speed in the higher atmosphere. In turn, we can validate atmospheric model. In this paper, we place attention to several plausible generation mechanisms of distinct infrasound from earthquakes of different magnitudes, as well as the merits of infrasound arrays. Some detailed case studies are given at the end. On the basis of these studies, we will propose some feasible measures in future. It is no doubt that infrasound research will be an active field either for precursory earthquake infrasound or for co-, post-earthquake infrasound.

Abstract:Objective To explore the effects of infrasoud o n the morphological changes of the lo wer central auditory pathways in gui nea pigs.Methods After exposed to infrasound stimula tion with 8Hz,120dB SPL,2h /time,1t ime /d for continued 30days,the morp hological changes of the lower central auditory pathways of guinea pigs were observ ed by optical and electric microscop y.Results The result show that neuronal edema,swelling of mitochondria,dilation of endoplasmic recticulum,a lot of lipofusin,degenera ted axons and increased lysosomes wa s obsevered in HC,CN,SOC,MGB and IC.Conclusion These results indicated that injury at auditory system is omnidirection al and far-ranging.

Abstract:Infrasound monitoring is one of the four monitoring technologies stipulated in"The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty".According to the kinds of infrasonic signals during infrasound wave monitoring,the inspiration mechanism of infrasound and its signal characteristics are stated and analyzed in this paper.The discussion is concentrated on the infrasound caused by explosion,volcanic eruption,earthquake and so on,which make people scared,also caused by microbaroms,surf and so on,which are quotidian things.These mechanism and characteristics are important to infrasound monitoring data processing,noise deducting,and event identifying.

Abstract:Objective To study the characteristics of infrasound and its effects on the worker8 at power plants.Methods The audible noise and infrasound in three thermoelectricity plants were measured and by using Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90),the subjective sensation,and the physiological indices were compared between exposed workers and controls.Results The infrasound levels were different at different measure sites of the three thermoelectricity works ranging from 40 to 98 dB.There was still 40～80 dB infrasound even when the soot blower stopped running.Different apparatus produced different infrasound levels with the highest ranging from 62 to 115 dB.A single frequency(16 Hz)infrasound was produced in certain department during working hour with sound pmssme levels of 110 to 120 dB.but the audible noise sound pressure level was less than 70 dB.There was no significant difference in the indices representing vision fatigue and neurobehaviour function between exposed workers and controls.Workers at certain department experienced evident subjeetive sensation of neurobehavioral dysfunction,and the scores of somatization,depression,hostility,phobic anxiety,and psychotism in the SCL-90 were significantly higher in the exposed group than in the control and the norm in China(P＜0.05).Conclusion Infrasound is ubiquitous in the working environment,but usaully,the noise levels are less than 120 dB.In some special production department.there is persistent infrasound above 110 to 120 dB.No obvious health effects are found among those who are exposed to infrasound below 100 dB.However,the workers who are chronically exposed to infrasound above 110 to 120 dB present notable subjective sensation of autonomic neurobehavioral dysfunction.and their psychological health status is not as good as those in the control and those in the domestic normal pattern.

Abstract:Recent interest in adverse effects of infrasound on organisms arises from health concerns. We assessed the association between infrasound exposure of 5 Hz at 130 dB and changes of cardiac ultrastructure and function in rats. Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into control, 1, 7, and 14 days groups for 2 h of infrasound once daily according to planned schedules. Changes of cardiac ultrastructure, hemodynamics indices, intracellular Ca(2+) concentrations ([Ca(2+)](i)), and sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+)-ATPase 2 (SERCA2) were detected. Heart rates in 1 day group were significantly increased compared with control group and no significant changes in other groups. Left ventricular systolic pressures were significantly increased with time. Left ventricular diastolic end pressure and maximum rising rates of left ventricular pressure (+dl/dt) were significantly increased in 7 and 14 days groups and not changed in 1 day group, compared with control group. Maximum dropping rates of left ventricular pressure (-dl/dt) were significantly decreased in 7 and 14 days groups and not changed in 1 day group, compared with control group. In heart cells, there were several swelled mitochondria in 1 day group, more swelled mitochondria in 7 days group, platelet aggregation in the intercellular substance in 14 days group. [Ca(2+)](i) were significantly increased with time. There was a significant increase in SERCA2 in 1 day group, while a significant decrease in 7 and 14 days groups, compared with control group. Infrasound of 5 Hz at 130 dB can damage cardiac ultrastructure and function. Changes of [Ca(2+)](i) and SERCA2 play an important role in the secondary cardiac damage.

Abstract:Low Frequency Noise (LFN) and infrasound has begun a new public health hazard. Evaluations of annoyance of (LFN) on human occupational health were based on standards where reactions of human auditory system and vibrations of parts of human body were small. Significant sensitivity has been observed on the central nervous system from infrasonic waves especially below 10 Hz. Observed follow-up effects in the brain gives incentive to study the relationship between parameters of waves and reactions obtained of biorhythms (EEG) and heart action (EKG). New results show the impact of LFN on the electrical potentials of the brain are dependent on the pressure waves on the human body. Electrical activity of circulatory system was also affected. Signals recorded in industrial workplaces were duplicated by loudspeakers and used to record data from a typical LFN spectra with 5 and 7 Hz in a laboratory chamber. External noise, electromagnetic fields, temperature, dust, and other elements were controlled. Results show not only a follow-up effect in the brain but also a result similar to arrhythmia in the heart. Relaxations effects were observed of people impacted by waves generated from natural sources such as streams and waterfalls.

Abstract:AIM:To observe the effects of infrasound on sperm quality and explore some underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Adult male SD rats were exposed to infrasound of 8 Hz at 90 dB or 130 dB for 1,7,14 or 21 d(2 h/d), whose epididymises were obtained for sperm count, abnormity and activity ratio inspection and whose testes for GSH-Px and MDA inspection. RESULTS: With prolonged exposure, sperm quality and GSH-Px in 90 dB and 130 dB groups decreased, while MDA increased, and at the same time point, the indexes of 130 dB groups changed more profoundly than those in 90 dB groups. CONCLUSION: Biological effect of infrasound on testes depends on the exposure parameters. The mechanisms of which could be unbalanced antioxidant system induced by infrasonic exposure.

Effects of 8 Hz infrasound with different intensity on glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities and madlondialdehyde contents in rats

Abstract:AIM: To explore the effects of infrasound on tissues and cells. METHODS: The rats were exposed 2 hours a day to infrasound of 8Hz with 90dB and 120dB for 14 days. The changes of glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities and madlondialdehyde contents in the brain, heart, lung and liver of rats were observed. RESULTS: It was found that the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH PX) in the brain, lung and liver tissues of rats was lower in the exposed groups than that in the control group ( P 0.05, P 0.01). The changes of glutanthione peroxidase (GSH PX) in the heart tissues of rats showed no difference with those in the control group. The activity of superoxide dismutese (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents in the brain and lung increased significantly ( P 0.05, P 0.01). The changes of superoxide dismutese and molondialdehyde contents in the liver and heart tissues of rats showed no difference. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that oxygen free radicals have increased after infrasound exposure, which may cause injury to the tissues and cells.

Abstract:When the weave of earthquake spreads out in the earth, it can radiate the infrasound. The kind of infrasound is called as earthquake infrasound. The frequency of infrasound is under the 20 Hz, it's magnitude is declined slowly, and at the same time it spreads far. The infrasound can spread several kilometers long in the air (from the earth's surface upper to the 50 kilometers). The infrasound can be detected after circling the earth several weeks. Because of these characters, the infrasound has the good opposite connection with the earthquake. As a rule, the abnormal infrasound signal can be detected beyond the magnitude 7 of earthquake in the world. Using the good capabilities of computer and the more and more perfect technologies of signal analysis to find out the inside qualities of infrasound abnormal signal before the earthquake, which will provide the important value for forecasting the earthquake later. Using the discrete Fourier transform and wavelet theories, the abnormal signal is found and it's range of frequency is about from 0 Hz to 4×10-3 Hz after the abnormal signal is discrete, at the same time the abnormal signal is symmetrical and regular in higher scale and the abnormal signal is broken in lower scale.
Protective Effects of 16 Hz 130 Db Infrasound Pretreatment on Focal Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in Rats

Abstract:Objective To observe the neuroprotective effects of infrasound pretreatment on injury caused by middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAO) model in rats.Methods Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats were randomly divided into three groups: control,non-infrasound pretreatment and infrasound pretreatment groups(10 in each group).The rats in the infrasound pretreatment group were continuously exposed to infrasound for 7 days with 2 hours per day.The animals in the non-infrasound pretreatment group were put into the infrasound capsule for 7 days,but were not exposed to infrasound.The animals in control group were taken as the control.At 24 h after the last pretreatment,the rats in three groups were subjected to ischemia through making MCAO model for 2 h and then reperfusion.At 24 h after reperfusion,the cerebral infarct size and neurological deficits scores were observed.Results Compared with those in control group,the rats in the infrasound pretreatment group showed smaller cerebral infarct size and higher neurological deficits scores(P0.05).There was no significant difference in the cerebral infarct size and neurological deficits scores between non-infrasound pretreatment group and control group.Conclusion Infrasound of 16 Hz 130 dB pretreatment improves significantly the neurological deficits scores and decreases the cerebral infarct size.
The Influences of Infrasound on Auditory Threshold and Morphology of Cochlea Hair Cells in Guinea Pigs

Abstract:AIM To explore the effects of infrasound on auditory threshold and morphology of cochlear hair cells in guinea pigs. METHODS The guinea pigs were exposed to infrasound with 8 Hz, 125 dB SPL, 2 h/time, 1 time/d for 30 days. and the changes of auditory threshold and morphology of cochlear hair cells were observed by auditory brainstem response audiometry (ABR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS The increase of ABR auditory threshold could be seen in all nine frequencies of toneburst and click sound. The maximum change was 26 dB (4 kHz to neburst) and the minimum change was 18 dB (click sound). There was no difference between the changes of ABR auditory threshold in all frequencies of toneburst and click sound. By scanning electron microscopy, some injury was observed in outer hair cells (OHCs) of cochlea. The most serious injury was found in the fourth turn of basilar membrane, then the third, and the second in the order of decreasing severity. The basal turn was almost normal. CONCLUSION The hearing of guinea pigs can be injured by exposing to infrasound. But there is difference between infrasound and white noise in their way of causing hearing injury.

Abstract:Objective To study the effect of infrasound on the proliferation of neural precursors in the subventricular zone(SVZ)of adult rats.Methods A total of 24 male SD rats were randomly divided into normal control group,control group and infrasound group.The rats of infrasound group were exposed to infrasound of 16 Hz at 130 dB for 2 h/d in 7 consecutive days.Before the rats were sacrificed at 3 d,7 d,10 d and 14 d after infrasound exposure,5-bromodeoxyuridine(BrdU)were given intraperitoneally for three times to label the S-phase cells,which were detected by anti-BrdU immunostaining.Results BrdU-positive cells were significantly decreased in the SVZ at 3 d after infrasound exposure and continued to reduce at 7 d,compared with those of the control group at 3 d and 7 d,respectively(P<0.01).However,10 d after infrasound exposure,a large number of BrdU-positive cells reappeared in the SVZ,and the number of BrdU-positive cells reached the normal level at 14 d(P>0.05).Conclusion Infrasound of 16 Hz at 130 dB inhibits the proliferation of neural precursors in the SVZ of adult rats.
Effects of infrasound on hippocampus ultrastructure of rats

Abstract:ObjectiveTo investigate effects of 8Hz 90dB and 8Hz 130dB infrasound on hippocampi ultrastructure of SD rats.Methods60 male SD rats were randomly divided into the control group and experimental group. Rats of experimental group were exposed to 8Hz 90dB or 8Hz 130dB infrasound 2 hours every day for 1, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 days. As soon as the exposure finished,the right hippocampus of rat was taken and examined by electron microscopy.ResultsHippocampus ultrastructure of rats was changed after only one day exposure to infrasound and the longer exposure to infrasound, the worse ultrastructure changed. But during the latter period,damages of hippocampus ultrastructure became lighter. Different rules were observed between 90dB and 130dB groups.ConclusionInfrasound of 8Hz 90dB and 8Hz 130dB can make hippocampus ultrastructure of rats damaged mainly as denaturalizations. These changes are nonliner with time, and the hippocampus of rats has adaptability to infrasound.

Abstract:Objective To further investigate the threshold value and the dose-effect relationship of infrasound on the rat pallium, and to observe the effects on the pallium's ultrastructure. Methods Rats were exposed to 16 Hz, 90 dB infrasound for 2 hours daily. With a transmission electron microscope, changes in the ultrastructure of the cortex of the rats' parietal lobes were observed 2 hours, 3 days and 7 days after the treatment. Results There were no changes in the ultrastructure of the pallium in rats which had been exposed for 7 days or 14 days. Denaturation appeared when the rats had been exposed for 21 days, 28 days or 35 days. Denaturation become more serious as the exposure time increased beyond 21 days. Denaturation and damage gradually returned to normal with time after exposure. Conclusion 16 Hz, 90 dB infrasound exposure over an extended time may cause denaturation and other changes in the ultrastructure of the pallium in rats. Such changes can return to normal with time.

Abstract:AIM To explore the effects of infrasoud on the morphological changes of the hair cells cilia in guinea pigs. METHODS After exposed to infrasound stimulation with 8 Hz, 120 dB SPL for two hours, once a day for 30 consecutive days, the morphological changes of the hair cells cilia ofguinea pigs ( n =20) were observed by optical microscopy. RESULTS The result showed that disarranged and irregularly shaped, edema collapse and disappearance of hairs could be seen in the hair cells especially in outer hair cell cilia. And it aggravated from the second to the fourth turns but the basal turn was almost normal. CONCLUSION Infrasound do harm to auditory system.

Abstract:Acupuncture is widely deployed today, but its basic physiology with Qi and meridian is not understood. This letter postulates that Qi is an infrasound wave packet and meridian is the muscle waveguide. Using video cameras and signal processing in an IRB approved clinical experiment we performed a comparison between control and electro-activated statistical tests on the long range (50-80cm) unidirectional transmission of Qi (p = 0.025). In the reverse direction, there is no transmission even in a distance of less than 10 cm (p = 0.545). The rectification is a surprise but in full agreement with Huang Di Nei Jing.

Abstract:Objective To explore the change of bcl-2 mRNA in the hippocampus of mice exposed to infrasound of different sound levels.Methods BALB/C mice were exposed to infrasound of 16 Hz,90/130 dB for 2 h everyday with exposure time of 1,7,14,21 and 28 d respectively.In situ hybridization was used to study the expression of bcl-2 mRNA in hippocampus.Results Reaction of 130 dB group was more intense than that of 90 dB group.While under the same sound pressure level,bcl-2 mRNA in hippocampus increased with the increase of exposure time.Conclusion Hippocampus is sensitive to the infrasound.With the effects on bcl-2 mRNA,infrasound may cause damage to brain,which is one important factor for the brain injury caused by infrasound.The effect is related to the sound pressure level and exposure time.
