Abstract:A series of nickel(II) α-diimine complexes with strong electron-withdrawing carboxyl groups, having reactive hydrogen atoms, were prepared and used as precatalysts for ethylene oligomerization and/or polymerization. The influence of metal halides and ligand structure on the catalytic activity and properties of products was investigated. The results showed that nickel bromide was much more active than nickel chloride, and the substituents at the ortho-position of aryl ring had large influence on the properties of products. Therefore, the products ranging from liquid oligomers to polymers could be readily obtained by the variation of the substituents on the ligands and reaction conditions.

Abstract:A series of bridged bis(pyridinylimino) ligands were efficiently synthesized through the condensation reaction of 4,4'-methylenebis(2,6-disubstituted aniline) with 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde or 2-benzoylpyridine. They reacted with (DME)NiBr(2) to form dinuclear Ni(II) complexes. All resultant compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra as well as the single-crystal X-ray diffraction to confirm the structures of ligands and complexes. Activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO), these nickel complexes showed considerably good activities for ethylene oligomerization and polymerization. Polymerization of 1,3-butadiene catalyzed by cobalt(II) and nickel(II) complexes bearing imino- or amino-pyridyl alcohol ligands in combination with ethylaluminum sesquichloride

Abstract:A series of cobalt(II) (1a–6a) and nickel(II) (1b–6b) complexes supported by imino- or amino-pyridyl alcohol ligands (tridentate [NNO]), 2-(2,6-R12C6H3N=CMe)-6-{(HO)CR2}C5H3N (L1–L4) and 2-(2,6-R12C6H3NHCHMe)-6-(CH2OH)C5H3N (L5 and L6), were synthesized and characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis along with X-ray diffraction analysis. The X-ray diffraction demonstrated that all the complexes adopted distorted trigonal bipyramidal configuration with the equatorial plane formed by the pyridyl nitrogen atom and two chlorine atoms. On activation with ethylaluminum sesquichloride (EASC), the cobalt complexes (1a–6a) displayed high catalytic activity for the polymerization of 1,3-butadiene to yield cis-1,4-polybutadiene with high selectivity (>96%) under the Al/Co molar ratio of 40 at 25 °C. The conversion of butadiene, microstructure and molecular weight of the resulting polymers were affected by the reaction parameters and ligand environment. However, in comparison with the corresponding cobalt complexes, the nickel complexes (1b–6b) obtained relatively lower catalytic activity, cis-1,4 content and molecular weight under the similar reaction conditions.

Abstract:Four alpha-diimine nickel complexes Ar-N=C(R-1) C(R-2)=N-ArNiBr2 with different alkyl substituents on backbone of ligand [Ar = 2, 6-dimethylphenyl, R-1 = C-n H2n+1, R-2 = C-m H2m+1; Cat 1 : m = 1, n = 1; Cat 2: m = 2, n = 1; Cat 3: m = 3, n = 1; Cat 4: m = 2, n = 2] were synthesized and used to catalyze ethylene polymerization in toluene. The influences arousing from changes in alkyl substituents on the backbone carbon of the catalyst ligand on the ethylene polymerization activities, microstructures and serni-crystalline properties of polyethylene were evaluated under varied polymerization temperatures and catalyst concentrations. It was showed that the catalysts with asymmetric alkyl substituents, i.e. R, and R, were different, had higher activity and produced polyethylenes having higher molecular weight as compared with those with symmetric substituents. With Cat 2 and Cat 3, the ethylene polymerization activities reached 1.86 x 10(3) kg PE/(mol Ni . h) and 1.92 x 10(3) kg PE/(mol Ni . h), and molecular weights of polymers achieved 68.2 x 10(4) and 101.9 x 10(4), respectively under the condition of 20 degrees C, atmosphere and 5.8 mmol/L of catalyst concentration. Analysis of polyethylene chain structures indicated that the main branching chain structure in polyethylene was methyl groups, and the branching degree was dependent mainly on polymerization temperature. Meanwhile, it was also showed that the polyethylene synthesized with alpha-diimine nickel complexes containing diversed alkyl substituents on ligand backbone had comparatively high proportion of hexyl and longer alkyl branching chains in polymer molecules, especially for the cases when polymerization was conducted at 40 degrees C.

Abstract:The use of α-diimine nickel catalysts to prepare high molecular weight branched polyethylene has matured, but few work reports consider high branch density and ultrahigh molecular weight. Herein, through a combination of asymmetric and steric control strategies, series of catalysts with a gradual increase number of N-aryl ortho-benzhydryl substituent were prepared. Through the analysis of polymerization results, it is believed that large steric hindrance plays a significant role in improving the catalyst thermal stability and reducing the temperature sensitivity of the product branch density and molecular weight. Surprisingly, Ni4, which has three large benzhydryl groups and one small methyl group at the four sites of the N-aryl ortho-position, has high chain growth rate and strong chain walking ability, allows it to prepare highly branched polyethylene with ultra-high molecular weight at higher temperatures with high activity. Moreover, this type of polyethylene material exhibits excellent strain recovery capabilities (98.2 %).

Abstract:We developed a new series of single-component air- and moisture-stable catalysts for alkyne polymerization based on nickelocene complexes containing phosphine and alkynyl ligands. Chlorine, phosphine and alkynyl ligands exhibited great influence on the catalytic activity of the nickelocene complexes. Highly soluble polymers with fairly high molecular weight (Mw 23 400) were obtained in high yields (85%) in the homogeneous polymerization of p-diethynylbenzene initiated with five nickelocene acetylides (π-C5H5)LNi(C≡CR) (L = PPh3, PBu3; R = p-C6H4C≡CH, C6H5, H) under mild conditions.

Abstract:We have developed a new series of single-component air- and moisture-stable catalysts for alkyne polymerization based on chloro-nickel and chloro-cobalt complexes containing phosphine ligands. The polymerization of p-diethynylbenzene initiated by these complexes proceeds smoothly in the presence of amines at room temperature to afford soluble π-conjugated polymers in yields as high as 81% with weight-average molecular weight up to 17 600.

Abstract:Compared with the conventional strategies of electronic and/or steric perturbation, catalytic olefin polymerization modulated by light irradiation or metal-metal cooperativity effect is a fascinating challenge that attracts considerable attention in the academic community. In this context, we design a strategy that could employ both effects to influence the polymerization process. Some dinuclear salicylaldimine and α -imino-ketone nickel complexes bearing a stiff-stilbene bridge were prepared, which could transfer between ( E )-isomers and ( Z )-isomers under ultraviolet irradiation. This isomerization can tune the electronic, steric and metal-metal cooperativity effects of the nickel catalysts. In this way, the catalytic activity, as well as polymer microstructures including molecular weight and branching density can be modulated in ethylene polymerization and copolymerization reactions. This strategy is generally applicable to other olefin polymerization catalytic systems and other types of transition metal mediated catalysis.

Abstract:The structure of polyolefin has an important influence on its performance and application. Ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization is one of the important ways to control the structure of the polyolefin. However, research on the ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization catalyzed by nickel complexes with different steric ligands remains to be refined. Here, three α-diimine nickel catalysts are used to study the ligand effect on catalytic performance in the ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization. Reaction activity, molecular weight, phase-transition temperature and branching density of the resultant copolymer are measured to evaluate the catalytic performance. The results indicate that the steric ligands could exert great effect on the copolymerization. As for the chemical valence of Ni species, detailed EPR demonstrate that the presence of excess co-catalyst can reduce Ni(II) to the lower valence and affect the catalytic performance.
Computational Exploration of Mechanism and Selectivities of (Nhc)nickel(ii)hydride-Catalyzed Hydroalkenylations of Styrene with Α-Olefins

Abstract:The [LNiH](+)-catalyzed hydroalkenylation between styrene and alpha-olefins gives distinctive chemo- and regioselectivities with N-heterocyclic carbene (L = NHC) ligands: (a) the reaction with NHC ligands produces the branched tail-to-tail products, whereas the reaction with phosphine ligands (L = PR3) favors the tail-to-head regio-isomers; (b) the reaction stops at heterodimerization with no further oligomerization even with excess alpha-olefin substrates; (c) typical side reactions with alpha-olefins, such as isomerization to internal olefins or polymerization, are either significantly diminished or eliminated. To understand the operating mechanism and origins of selectivities, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed, and several additional experiments were conducted. The olefin insertion step is found to determine both the regioselectivity and chemoselectivity, leading to the tail-to-tail heterohydroalkenylation product. With a small NHC ligand (1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene), the intrinsic electronic effects of ligand favor the tail-to-head regioisomer by about 1 kcal/mol in the olefin insertion step. With bulky NHC ligands (1,3-bis(2,6-dimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene or SIPr), the steric repulsions between the ligand and the substituent of the inserting alkene override the intrinsic electronic preference, making the tail-to-tail regioisomer favored (about 3 kcal/mol with both ligands). In the competition between homo- and heterodimerization, the insertion of the secondary styrene breaks its pi-conjugation, making the insertion of styrene about 2 kcal/mol less favorable than that of alkyl-substituted alkenes. In addition, the interaction between nickel and phenyl group of styrene stabilizes the resting state and inhibits the side reactions with alpha-olefins, suggesting that styrene, or similar aryl olefins, is not only a substrate, but also an inhibitor for side reactions. This unique effect of styrene is verified by control experiments.
Palladium/Benzoic Acid-Catalyzed Regio- and Stereoselective Polymerization of Internal Diynes and Diols Through C(sp(3))-H Activation

Abstract:The C-H activation has been a hot research area in organic chemistry, and the most difficult one is the C(sp(3))-H activation. Although the C-H activation has been introduced to the research of synthetic polymer chemistry, the polymerization developed based on C(sp(3))-H activation is rarely reported, which will enrich the tools for the preparation of functional polymers. In this work, palladium/benzoic acid catalyzed polymerization of internal diynes and diols through C(sp(3))-H activation was successfully established. Regio-and stereoregular functional poly(allylic ether)s with 100% E-isomers and high weight average molecular weights (M-w up to 33200) were prepared in excellent yield (98%). The reaction mechanism was unveiled with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the thin films of polymers display high refractive indices and low optical dispersions. The polymer containing tetraphenylethene moiety displays the aggregation-enhanced emission feature and could be used to generate 2D fluorescent photopattern. Thus, this work not only establishes a powerful polymerization based on C(sp(3))-H activation, but also furnishes functional polymers for diverse applications.
Congestion of steric and electronic factors in α-diimine nickel precatalysts for high-temperature ethylene polymerization in accessing direct PE elastomer

Abstract:In α-diimine-nickel catalysts mediated ethylene polymerization, the synergistic impact of steric and electronic factors plays an instrumental role in fine-tuning catalytic activity, polymer molecular weights, microstructure, as well as mechanical and elastic properties. In this study, a new series of nonsymmetrical bis(arylimino)-acenaphthene-nickel complexes was prepared and investigated for ethylene polymerization. These complexes feature both bulky N-2,6-dibenzhydryl-3,4,5-fluorophenyl imine and smaller N-2,6-di( R )-4-(R 1 )phenyl imine units [ Ni 2Me (R, = Me, R 1 = H ), Ni 2Et (R, = Et, R 1 = H ) and Ni 2iPr (R, = iPr, R 1 = H ), Ni 3Me (R, R 1 = Me), Ni 2Et,Me (R, = Et, R 1 = Me)]. The incorporation of both steric congestion and strong electronic withdrawal groups into the catalyst structure resulted in significantly improved catalytic performance: high thermal stability and exceptional activity were observed at both ambient temperature (21.24 × 10 6 at 30 °C) and industrially relevant temperatures (1.65 × 10 6 at 100 °C). Polymer molecular weights and branching degree were tunable by adjusting the ligand structure and reaction conditions. This correlation extended to mechanical and elastic properties, demonstrating high tensile strength at low temperatures and good elastic recovery at high reaction temperatures, consistent with typical polyolefin elastomers.

Abstract:Since the discovery of α-diimine catalysts in 1995, an extensive series of Brookhart-type complexes have shown their excellence in catalyzing ethylene polymerizations with remarkable activity and a high molecular weight. However, although this class of palladium complexes has proven proficiency in catalyzing ethylene copolymerization with various polar monomers, the α-diimine nickel catalysts have generally exhibited a much worse performance in these copolymerizations compared to their palladium counterparts. Recently, Brookhart et al. reported a notable exception, demonstrating that α-diimine nickel catalysts could catalyze the ethylene copolymerization with some vinylalkoxysilanes effectively, producing functionalized polyethylene incorporating trialkoxysilane (-Si(OR)3) groups. This breakthrough is significant since Pd-catalyzed copolymerizations are commercially less usable due to the high cost of palladium. Thus, the utilization of Ni, given its abundance in raw materials and cost-effectiveness, is a landmark in ethylene/polar vinyl monomer copolymerization. Inspired by these findings, we used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the mechanistic study of ethylene copolymerization with vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMoS) catalyzed by Brookhart-type nickel catalysts, aiming to elucidate the molecular-level understanding of this unique reaction. Initially, the nickel complexes and cationic active species were optimized through DFT calculations. Subsequently, we explored the mechanisms including the chain initiation, chain propagation, and chain termination of ethylene homopolymerization and copolymerization catalyzed by Brookhart-type complexes. Finally, we conducted an energetic analysis of both the in-chain and chain-end of silane enchainment. It was found that chain initiation is the dominant step in the ethylene homopolymerization catalyzed by the α-diimine Ni complex. The 1,2- and 2,1-insertion of vinylalkoxysilane exhibit similar barriers, explaining the fact that both five-membered and four-membered chelates were identified experimentally. After the VTMoS insertion, the barriers of ethylene reinsertion become higher, indicating that this step is the rate-determining step, which could be attributed to the steric hindrance between the incoming ethylene and the bulky silane substrate. We have also reported the energetic analysis of the distribution of polar substrates. The dominant pathway of chain-end -Si(OR)3 incorporation is suggested as chain-walking → ring-opening → ethylene insertion, and the preference of chain-end -Si(OR)3 incorporation is primarily attributed to the steric repulsion between the pre-inserted silane group and the incoming ethylene molecule, reducing the likelihood of in-chain incorporation.

Rigid Triptycene-Based Di- and Trinuclear Salicylaldiminato Nickel Cooperative Polymerization Catalysts

Abstract:A multimetallic structure with a rigid linker can poise more than one catalytically active site in close proximity to control their reaction pathways in ethylene (co)polymerization by intermetallic cooperativity. This elegant concept was mainly limited to bimetallic systems. We report the synthesis of a series of mono-, bi-, and trinuclear salicylaldiminato Ni(II) catalysts based on a triptycene backbone. In ethylene (co)polymerization, the bimetallic nickel catalyst not only showed higher activity than the mononickel catalyst but also achieved an enhanced incorporation rate of alpha-olefin and the polar amino olefin, while the trimetallic nickel catalysts were thermally robust up to 100 degrees C and achieved a unique long-chain branching level up to an 81% mole ratio of all. Trinuclear nickel catalysts were found to be very less active for ethylene copolymerization with 1-hexene due to the increased steric hindrance. Although the catalytic result is worse than expected, especially for trinickel complexes, this work is still meaningful for the development of multinuclear catalysts that can mediate important catalytic reactions with enhanced efficiency and cooperativity.
Homo- and hetero-polymerization of ethylene catalyzed by α-diimine nickel complexes with hydroxyl groups

Abstract:Heterogeneous olefin polymerization catalysts have received wide interests from academia and industry because their distinct advantages in thermostability, avoidance of reactor fouling and continuous production operations. In this work, hydroxy functional groups are introduced to the α-diimine nickel framework, which can serve as reactive functionality to react with MgCl2/AlRn(OEt)3-n and form ionic anchoring interaction that bind the catalyst strongly to the surface of the supports. These heterogeneous catalysts are highly active in ethylene polymerization to produce polyethylene with higher molecular weight (up to 280.5 × 104 g·mol−1), lower branching density and higher tensile strength (up to 26.7 MPa) than those generated by the homogeneous counterparts. More importantly, the nickel complexes with multiple hydroxy groups lead to high loading capacity on MgCl2/AlRn(OEt)3-n supports, affording polyethylene products with minimum inorganic contamination.

Enhancing Suppression of Chain Transfer via Installing Bulky N‐ortho‐Aryl Substituents into α‐Diimine Nickel System

Abstract:Recently, the important role of sterically bulky aromatic substituents at the axial position of the metal center for synthesizing high‐performance catalysts were recognized. In this study, a series of α‐diimine nickel complexes with bulky N‐ortho‐aryl substituents were designed and synthesized. The as‐synthesized nickel complexes showed high activities (up to 2.3×107 g·mol‐1·h‐1) and superior thermostability, giving access to moderately branched polyethylenes (35‐86/1000C) with high molecular weights (up to 197.5×104 g·mol‐1). The polyethylene materials generated by these nickel complexes at 80 °C exhibited outstanding tensile mechanical. In addition, these nickel complexes could also catalyze the copolymerization of ethylene and polar monomer with modest activity (such as undecenoic acid, 10‐undecen‐1‐ol and 6‐chlorohex‐1‐ene), yielding functionalized polyolefin with adjustable molecular weights (6.8‐222.9×104 g·mol‐1) and incorporation ratios (0.2‐4.3 mol%).

Abstract:A series of neutral binuclear nickel phenoxyiminato catalysts connected by rigid skeletons of different lengths have been efficiently synthesized. The rigid skeleton and bulky tert-butyl groups together force two nickel coordination planes to get dose and stack in an anti cofacial fashion. With reduced nickel nickel distances, these binuclear nickel complexes displayed higher catalytic activity, produced polymers with higher molecular weight, and showed less inhibition by the presence of additional polar monomers in ethylene polymerization and copolymerization. We attributed these effects to a favorable consequence of the enhanced bimetallic effect and steric hindrance due to the cofacial orientation.
Thermostability promotion of α-diimine nickel precatalysts tailored with 2,6-bis(bis(4-fluorophenyl)methyl)-3,4,5-trimethoxyaniline for PE elastomer synthesis

Abstract:The influence of axial steric hindrance in α-diimine nickel catalysts on ethylene polymerization is paramount for enhancing catalytic performance especially thermal stability and polymer molecular weights. In this study, a set of five nonsymmetrical 1,2-bis(arylimino)acenaphthene-nickel complexes, incorporating 2,6-bis(bis(4-fluorophenyl)methyl)-3,4,5-trimethoxyaniline and 2,4,6-trialkylaniline moieties was prepared to tailor the catalytic attributes for ethylene polymerization. In-depth studies on polymerization of ethylene, employing two different cocatalysts and different reaction conditions, revealed exceptional catalytic activities for these precatalysts with activity level as high as 20.3 × 10 6 g mol -1 h -1 at 30 °C and high molecular weights of obtained polyethylene with adjustable branching degrees and distributions. Reactions at elevated temperatures validated the enhanced thermal stability of Ni-Me 2 precatalyst, displaying a noteworthy activity of 1.4 × 10 6 g mol -1 h -1 at 100 °C. Polyethylene derived from more sterically hindered nickel complexes exhibited relatively higher molecular weights and branching degrees compared to less hindered analogues. This trend was consistent across mechanical and elastic properties, which ranged from 6.1 MPa to 10.6 MPa and 26% to 49%, respectively. Moreover, the manipulation of branching degree by increasing the reaction temperature led to an elastic recovery of up to 63%, indicating the potential formation of thermoplastic polyethylene elastomers.
