Abstract:The field dependence of voltage V(H) in a 2H-Nb0.9Ta0.1Se2 single crystal was measured and converted to current–voltage data V(I). We found a strong peak at the differential resistance vs. H curve near Hc2 at high current, and discuss the possible mechanism.

Abstract:The field dependence of voltage V(H) in a 2H-Nb0.9Ta0.1Se2 single crystal at various currents was measured and converted to current-voltage data V(I). Then the scaling law V=α(I-Ic)β was applied to extract the critical current Ic(H) and differential resistance Rd(H). The results show a peak on the differential resistance vs.H curve near Hc2 when the applied current is high, but for a lower current it appears near the onset of peak effect region. This indicates that the new types of pinning centers generated by doped Ta significantly alter the dynamic properties of the vortex system.

Abstract:We report the critical current density Jc and the vortex dynamics in phase-separated Tl0.58Rb0.42Fe1.72Se2 crystals by performing magnetization measurements. Structural investigation reveals micro- and nanoscopic phase separation between 122 (superconducting) and 245 (not superconducting) phases. Micrometric phase separation refers to 245 islands with typical diameters of 2µm embedded in a multiply-connected 122 superconducting network. Nanoscopic phase separation refers to 245 nanoprecipitates embedded in the 122 superconducting paths. The 245 nanoprecipitates with size comparable to the coherence length produce strong vortex pinning. It was observed that the temperature dependence of the flux creep rate presents a peak at intermediate temperatures and magnetic fields lower than 0.5T. The peak is systematically suppressed as the magnetic field is increased, and it could be related with relaxation generated by double-kink excitations. Double-kinks are low-energy depinning excitations usually associated with strong pinning produced by correlated disorder.
Vortex Crossing, Trapping and Pinning in Superconducting Nanowires of a NbSe_2 Two-Dimensional Crystal

Abstract:Nanowires of two-dimensional (2D) crystals of type-II superconductor NbSe2 prepared by electron-beam lithography were studied, focusing on the effect of the motion of Abrikosov vortices. We present magnetoresistance measurements on these nanowires and show features related to vortex crossing, trapping, and pinning. The vortex crossing rate was found to vary nonmonotonically with the applied field, which results in nonmonotonic magnetoresistance variations in agreement with theoretical calculations in the London approximation. Above the lower critical field H-c1 the crossing rate is also influenced by vortices trapped by sample boundaries or pinning centers, leading to sample-specific magnetoresistance patterns. We show that the local pinning potential can be modified by intentionally introducing surface adsorbates, making the magnetoresistance pattern a "magnetofingerprint" of the sample-specific configuration of vortex pinning centers in a 2D crystal superconducting nanowire.
The transport properties of Nb-doped trichalcogenide Ta0.8Nb0.2S3

Abstract:Single crystals of TaS3 and Nb-doped Ta0.8Nb0.2S3 were grown by the usual vapor-transport method. The low-field DC resistivity, thermoelectric power, and I–V characteristics of both samples have been measured. Non-linear I–V characteristics due to possible CDW transition were found in Ta0.8Nb0.2S3 at temperatures up to 400K and the temperature dependence of resistivity remained insulator-like even when the temperature was as high as 400K. Possible CDW transition in Ta0.8Nb0.2S3 crystals at temperatures above 400K is suggested and need further studies to confirm.

Abstract:Inversion symmetry breaking has played an important role in recent discoveries of nonreciprocal charge transport. Niobium diselenide, for example, lacks an inversion center in the monolayer form and can host prominent nonreciprocal transport property. Here, however, we observe a nonreciprocal transport signal in the second-harmonic channel of bulk-like NbSe2, in which inversion symmetry of the lattice seems preserved. The second-harmonic signal occurs along different in-plane current orientations and appears not only in the vortex-liquid regime but also even in the superconducting fluctuation regime without an applied magnetic field. By adding a direct current (DC) bias, we quantify the symmetry breaking effect in the vortex-liquid regime. The DC bias also suggests that the rectification effect at the contacts may account for the seemingly nonreciprocal transport at zero magnetic field. Our results demonstrate that DC biasing is a useful knob for addressing nonreciprocal charge transport in a wide range of materials.

Revisit of the Anisotropic Vortex States of 2H-Nbse$_{2}$ Towards the Zero-Field Limit

Abstract:We revisited the vortex states of 2H-NbSe2 towards zero fields by a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. Fine structures of the anisotropic vortex states were distinguished, one is a spatially non-splitting zero bias peak, and the other is an in-gap conductance anomaly resembling evolved crossing features around the center of the three nearest vortices. Both of them distribute solely along the next nearest neighboring direction of the vortex lattice and become unresolved in much higher magnetic fields, implying an important role played by the vortex-vortex interactions. To clarify these issues, we have studied the intrinsic vortex states of the isolated trapped vortex in zero fields at 0.45 K. It is concluded that the anisotropic zero bias peak is attributed to the superconducting gap anisotropy, and the spatially evolved crossing features are related to the vortex-vortex interaction. The vortex core size under the zero-field limit is determined. These results provide a paradigm for studying the inherent vortex states of type-II superconductors especially based on an isolated vortex.

Abstract:We report a detailed study of tunneling spectra measured on 2H-Ta$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ ($x=0\sim 0.1$) single crystals using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The prominent gap-like feature unintelligible for a long time was found to be accompanied by some "in-gap" fine structures. By investigating the second-derivative spectra and their temperature and magnetic field dependencies, we were able to prove that inelastic electron tunneling is the origin of these features and obtain the Eliashberg function of 2H-Ta$_x$Nb$_{1-x}$Se$_2$ at atomic scale, providing a potential way to study the local Eliashberg function and phonon spectra of the related transition-metal dichalcogenides.

Abstract:Single crystals of two-dimensional 2 H - NbSe 2, which undergo superconducting transition at Tc=7.1 K and charge-density wave (CDW) transition at TCDW=30 K , were synthesized. The resistance residual ratio (RRR=R(300 K )/R(8 K )) of the samples from different batches varies from 10 to 30, but the superconducting properties hardly change with RRR. The magneto-resistance (MR)is generally small and its temperature and field dependence of MR violate the Kohler's rule that holds for many conventional metals, indicating that the scattering times of charge carriers are no longer isotropic. The steep decrease of Hall coefficient RH below 50 K can be interpreted by the drastic increase of the mean-free-path of electron type charge carrier. The influence of CDW transition on the resistivity and Hall effect is discussed in a two-band model.

Abstract:The diffusion of vortices down a thermal gradient produces a Josephson signal which is detected as a vortex Nernst effect. In a recent report by Xu et at, [Nature 406, 486 (2000)], an enhanced Nernst signal identified with vortex-like excitations was observed in a series of La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) crystals at temperatures 50-100 K above T-c. To pin down the onset temperature T-v of the vortexlike signal in the lightly doped regime (0.03 less than or equal tox less than or equal to0.07), we have reanalyzed the carrier contribution to the Nernst signal in detail. By supplementing Nernst measurements with thermopower and Hall-angle data, we isolate the off-diagonal Peltier conductivity alpha (xy) and show that its profile provides an objective determination of T-v. With the results. we revise the phase diagram for the fluctuation regime in LSCO to accommodate the lightly doped regime. In the cuprate Bi2Sr2-yLayCuO6, we find that the carrier contribution is virtually negligible for y in the range 0.4-0.6. The evidence of an extended temperature interval with vortexlike excitations is even stronger in this system. Finally, we discuss how T-v relates to the pseudogap temperature T* and the implications of strong fluctuations between the pseudogap state and the d-wave superconducting state.
Investigating the superconducting state of 2$H$-NbS$_2$ as seen by the vortex lattice

Abstract:2$H$-NbS$_2$ is a classic example of an anisotropic multi-band superconductor, with significant recent work focussing on the interesting responses seen when high magnetic fields are applied precisely parallel to the hexagonal niobium planes. It is often contrasted with its sister compound 2$H$-NbSe$_2$ because they have similar onset temperatures for superconductivity, but 2$H$-NbS$_2$ has no charge density wave whereas in 2$H$-NbSe$_2$ the charge density wave order couples strongly to the superconductivity. Using small-angle neutron scattering, a bulk-sensitive probe, we have studied the vortex lattice and how it responds to the underlying superconducting anisotropy. This is done by controlling the orientation of the field with respect to the Nb planes. The superconducting anisotropy, $\Gamma_{ac} = 7.07 \pm 0.2$, is found to be field independent over the range measured (0.15 to 1.25 T), and the magnetic field distribution as a function of the applied magnetic field is found to be in excellent quantitative agreement with anisotropic London theory modified with a core-size cut-off correction, providing the first complete validation of this model. We find values of $\lambda_{ab} = 141.9 \pm 1.5 $ nm for the in-plane London penetration depth, and $\lambda_{c} \sim$ 1 \textmu m for the out-of-plane response. The field-independence indicates that we are primarily sampling the larger of the two gaps generating the superconductivity in this material.

Thermally Activated Transport and Vortex-Glass Phase Transition of K0.78fe1.70se2 Single Crystals

Abstract:The transport property (rho - T) and flux motion together with the superconductivity of K-0.78 Fe-1.70 Se-2 single crystals are studied. In the transport measurement, contrasting behavior is observed under two different magnetic field orientations, i.e., H-//c - axis and H-perpendicular to c - axis, which is ascribed to different vortex configurations. In the flux motion study, the tail of the r - T well fits the description of the vortex-glass (VG) critical behavior, which is confirmed by VG scaling. The strong pinning nature of K0.78Fe1.70Se2 implies great sustainability under high magnetic fields and the potential for practical application of the system. The rho - T relation under T-c follows Arrhenius thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) behavior. The existence of a crossover behavior in a magnetic field is discovered via the magnetic dependence of the effective pinning barrier, which is related to the change in pinning strength of the point defects and the entanglements of the flux lines. Finally, a vortex phase diagram is proposed based on the evolution of upper critical field and other dynamic characteristics.

Abstract:The anisotropic transport properties of K0.8Fe1.65Se2 crystal have been investigated with the angle θ (between the magnetic field H and c-axis) varied from 0° to 180°. It is found that the angle dependencies of the mixed state resistivities near Tc0 show a small anomalous peak on the resistive valley for H//ab, probably due to the kinked vortex structure with a lower pinning energy in the phase-separated crystal. In the normal state, the resistivities increase with increasing angles and take a maximum at H//ab, which may be related to the larger resistivity when carriers move along the c-axis driven by Lorentz force.

Abstract:We report experimental investigation of the resistivity and Nernst effect in two-dimensional (2D) NbSe2 crystals.A strongly enhanced Nernst effect,100 times larger than that in bulk NbSe2,caused by moving vortices is observed in thin film.It is found that in the low temperature,high magnetic field regime,pinning effects show little dependence on the thickness and resistivity of the superconductor films.Strong Nernst signals persist above the superconducting transition,suggesting that the Nernst effect is a sensitive probe to superconducting fluctuations.A magnetic field induced superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is evident,which is surprising in that such a SIT usually takes place in disordered dirty superconductors,while our samples are highly crystalline and close to the clean limit.Hence,our results expand the scope of SIT into 2D crystal clean superconductors.

Abstract:We have studied the vortex dynamics of the Tl0.4 K 0.41Fe2−y Se2 single crystal through the measurements of temperature and magnetic field dependencies of electrical resistivity. Due to the existence of intra-layer Fe-site vacancy and inter-layer Josephson coupling, it is found that the pinning of vortices is very strong, which hinders the flux flow. A very high upper critical field H c2 value and a moderate anisotropy parameter γ are obtained, similar to those found in YBa2Cu3O7−δ superconductor. These results suggest that the Tl0.4 K 0.41Fe2−y Se2 superconductor has a good sustainability under high magnetic field, indicating a good potential for application.
Quasiparticle density of states of 2H-NbSe_2 single crystals revealed by low-temperature specific heat measurements according to a two-component model

Abstract:Low-temperature specific heat in a dichalcogenide superconductor 2H-NbSe 2 is measured in various magnetic fields. It is found that the specific heat can be described very well by a simple model concerning two components corresponding to vortex normal core and ambient superconducting region, separately. For calculating the specific heat outside the vortex core region, we use the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) formalism under the assumption of a narrow distribution of the superconducting gaps. The field-dependent vortex core size in the mixed state of 2H-NbSe 2 , determined by using this model, can explain the nonlinear field dependence of specific heat coefficient γ(H), which is in good agreement with the previous experimental results and more formal calculations. With the high-temperature specific heat data, we can find that, in the multi-band superconductor 2H-NbSe 2 , the recovered density of states (or Fermi surface) below T c under a magnetic field seems not to be gapped again by the charge density wave (CDW) gap, which suggests that the superconducting gap and the CDW gap may open on different Fermi surface sheets.
Vortex-Glass Phase Transition and Superconductivity in Fe 1.01 Te 0.62 Se 0.38 Single Crystal

Abstract:Transport properties and current–voltage (I–V) characteristics for the Fe1.01Te0.62Se0.38 single crystal were measured under dc magnetic field up to 14 T. The temperature dependence of resistivity (ρ–T) displayed major differences when magnetic fields were applied along and perpendicular to the c-axis, respectively, which distinguishes Fe1.01Te0.62Se0.38 from the isotropic β-FeSe. Strong evidence of the existence of vortex-glass transition was provided by both the tail behavior in the ρ–T curves and successful vortex-glass scaling of the I–V isotherms, implying excellent sustainability under high magnetic field and potential application of the superconducting system. In contrast to the typical three-dimensional vortex behavior of the AxFe2−ySe2 superconductors, the Fe1.01Te0.62Se0.38 single crystals displayed quasi two-dimensional vortex behavior. A vortex phase diagram is presented, based on the evolution of the upper critical field and the vortex-glass transition temperature.
Anisotropy in Electronic and Magneto-transport of 2D superconductor NbSe$_2$

Abstract:This article reports the successful synthesis of single crystalline two-dimensional thin flakes of NbSe$_2$. The XRD pattern of the grown crystal ensured its crystallization in a single phase with a hexagonal structure. The EDAX endorsed the stoichiometry of the as grown sample. To study the vibrational modes, the Raman spectra were recorded, which exhibited the expected four Raman active modes. The resistance vs temperature measurement showed a well-established superconducting transition (Tc) at 7.3 K. The ZFC (Zero-Field Cooled) & FC (Field Cooled) magnetization curves, as well as the isothermal MH (Magnetization vs. field) measurements, have been performed for both in plane and out-of-plane H directions. Distinct anisotropy is observed in both magnetization and magneto-transport measurements with field direction, leading to different critical fields (Hc). Out-of-plane magneto-transport data hints towards the existence of a filamentary state. The density functional theory (DFT) has been used to study the band structure of NbSe$_2$. Although the bulk band structure confirmed metallic behavior, the same for mono-layers of NbSe$_2$ within the GGA+U framework showed a band gap of 1.17eV. The article addresses the anisotropy in the electronic and magneto-transport of 2D superconductor NbSe$_2$.
