Abstract:Deploying exclusive bus lanes on urban expressways is considered an important strategy to support the public transit priority policy, which has received increased attention from various government agencies in Beijing, China. The primary objective of this paper is to use a simulation approach to evaluate the impacts of the planned exclusive bus lane on the western 3rd ring-road expressway in Beijing on traffic running conditions of the expressway. We first establish a micro-simulation network platform using VISSIM based on a comprehensive field survey and data collection. Then, the authors calibrate the network configurations, desired speed distribution, and driving behavior parameters using the field collected data, resulting in all relative errors between the simulated time-varying speeds and the field speeds collected from Remote Traffic Microwave Sensors (RTMS) less than 15%. Afterward, the authors use the established simulation model to analyze the current traffic conditions of the western 3rd ring-road expressway. Further, the authors complete the design of two scenarios for deploying the exclusive bus lane, the curbside bus lane scenario and median bus lane scenario, which are subsequently evaluated using the established simulation model. From the simulation results, it is found that for the mainline of the western 3rd ring-road expressway as well as the whole corridor network, the operational efficiencies of buses, general traffic and all mixed traffic are all improved with the deployment of the exclusive bus lane. Further, the median bus lane scenario slightly outperforms the curbside bus lane scenario for the western 3rd ring-road expressway network studied in this paper.
