Abstract:Objective Complications of different surgical methods for early breast cancer have been a concern of clinicians. This study was to investigate the associations of different operation modalities with early complications and prognosis in order to provide some reference for optimal surgical options for breast cancer. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 1046 cases of breast cancer surgically treated in our hospital from December 1979 to December 2003,and compared the associations of different surgical modalities with early complications and their influences on the prognosis. Results Operation modalities involved radical resection, extended radical resection, modified radical mastectomy, simple mastectomy and breast-conserving surgery.Early postoperative complications were significantly increased with the radical expansion scope. However, there were no significant differences in the rates of local recurrence and 5-and 10-year survival(P0.05).Conclusion The prognosis of breast cancer is not related with surgical modalities.Postoperative complications of extended radical mastectomy are increased with no survival benefits.
