Abstract:The two-stage reverse osmosis membrane was used to prepare pure water for medical use. The pure water was used to prepare concentrated dialysis solution and to prepare ultra pure dialysis solution by ultrafiltration membrane purification finally. The entire process resulted that the concentrations of harmful ions in the ultra pure dialysis solution were significantly lower than the national standard. The residual chlorine concentration was less than 0.01 mg·L-1, the result of bacteria culture was 0 cfu·mL-1 and the endotoxin concentration was 0.03 EU·mL-1. These results have reached the AAMI-2004 standards of ultra pure dialysis in U.S. and can effectively improve the quality of treatment.

Abstract:Nanotechnology-enabled water treatment is a promising solution to the challenges in the current water treatment processes, particularly to the crisis of persistent and trace emerging contaminants. Taking the integrated process coupling membrane filtration with ozonation that has been developed and widely applied in field as examples, we analyze the scientific rationale of catalytic ceramic membranes and nano-effects in membrane pores, which are considered as nano-reactors. The confinement effects are analyzed from four aspects, including the high specific surface area in membrane nano-pores, enrichment of reactants and enhancement of reaction kinetics in nano-pores, organized arrangement of water molecules in nano-reactors and the role of electric double layer during reactions. For each aspect, we build the correlation between the confinement effects and the phenomena in membrane nano-pores. Moreover, we present opportunities for the future research on nanotechnology-enabled water treatment.

Abstract:Nanofiltration membrane separation technology is an effective method for production of high quality drinking water. According to electrostatic and steric-hindrance effects, inorganic pollutants (such as hardness, nitrate, arsenic, fluorides and heavy metals) and organic pollutants (such as pesticides, trihalomethanes, hormone and natural organic matter) can be removed from surface water or ground water by using nanofiltration membranes. The newest progress status on the production of drinking water by using nanofiltration membranes was reviewed, which includes the separation performances of inorganic and organic pollutants in surface water or ground water by nanofiltration membranes for drinking water production and the prevention and control methods of nanofiltration membranes' fouling.

Abstract:The separation mechanism and applications of nanofiltration (NF) membranes are reviwed.The separation performance of NF membranse can be expressed on the basis of the space-charge model,the fixed-charge model (i.e.the Teorell-Meyer-Sievers model),the pore model and the electrostatic and steric-hindrance model.The applications of NF membranes are mentioned in the following individual fields.Which are the separation and purification of oligosaccharides,the highly concentration of juice,the separation of peptide and amino acid,the concentration and purification of antibiotics,the concentration of milk and whey,the overall utilization of agricultural by-product and the development of bio-membrane reactors.

Abstract:There is a voluminous literature on the determination of structural and electrical properties of a nanofiltration (NF) membrane and its separation performance. Theories used to characterize a NF membrane usually include: the non-equilibrium thermodynamic model, the pore model, the TMS model, the electrostatic and steric-hindrance pore model, and the semi-emprical model. In the article, we briefly trace the origins or the general ideas of the above-mentioned theories. From there, recent researches on the evaluation of membrane structural and electrical properties are reviewed. We then turn to research on the separation performance of a NF membrane for single component solutions of inorganic electrolytes, neutral organic solutions, and mixture solution of inorganic electrolytes or that of electrolyte and neutral organic solute. Finally, we conclude with suggestions as to the role of models in the contributions to the application of the NF technology in product separation processes.

Abstract:In recent decades, nanofiltration (NF) is considered as a promising separation technique to produce drinking water from different types of water source. In this paper, we comprehensively reviewed the progress of NF-based drinking water treatment, through summarizing the development of materials/fabrication and applications of NF membranes in various scenarios including surface water treatment, groundwater treatment, water reuse, brackish water treatment, and point of use applications. We not only summarized the removal of target major pollutants (e.g., hardness, pathogen, and natural organic matter), but also paid attention to the removal of micropollutants of major concern (e.g., disinfection byproducts, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and arsenic). We highlighted that, for different applications, fit-for-purpose design is needed to improve the separation capability for target compounds of NF membranes in addition to their removal of salts. Outlook and perspectives on membrane fouling control, chlorine resistance, integrity, and selectivity are also discussed to provide potential insights for future development of high-efficiency NF membranes for stable and reliable drinking water treatment.

Abstract:Nanofiltration membrane (NF) is one of the most important activities employed in wastewater treatment field. It is a relatively recent development in membrane technology and it can be aqueous or non-aqueous. Characteristics of NF fall between UF and RO, and functions by both pore-size flow (convective) and the solution-diffusion mechanisms. Membrane charges play an important role in membrane function and often NF membrane as have surface negative charges. NF technique is used in a variety of water and wastewater treatment (WWT) in different industrial applications. The main job of NF is the selective removal of ions and organic substances and it is used in some specified seawater desalination application. The main objective of this review is to illustrate the main applications of NF process in water reuse, WWT as tertiary treatment, water softening and desalination fields. Comparison of basic economic analyses with other alternative processes in profitability is also performed.

Abstract:In recent years,the large scale application of nanofiltration membrane technology has been concerned widely in water treatment.The model of nanofiltration system design should be various rather than a simple simulation of reverse osmosis system design due to the characteristics of nanofiltration with the variety membrane material,wide range of solutes rejection and complex separation mechanism.In this paper,NF270 polyamide nanofiltration membrane module was employed to investigate the impacts of concentration polarization on commercialized nanofiltration membrane performance in different types of inorganic salt solution as well as different operating conditions including pressure,flow,salinity concentration,temperature and pH value.By comparison with reverse osmosis membrane separation performance and system design,some reasonable suggestions on NF system design are given for such type nanofiltration membrane under a certain salinity range of feed water: 1) operating pressure is independent with the salinity of feed water;2) system recovery is irrelevant to the process length;3) the salt retention rate only depends on the recovery.Attempt to provide a theoretic basis for a new model of nanofiltration system design and do some preliminary exploration for creating a complete nanofiltration design model.

Abstract:In the field of industrial wastewater treatment, membrane separation technology, as an emerging separation technology, compared with traditional separation technology such as precipitation, adsorption, and ion exchange, has advantages in separation efficiency, low energy consumption, low cost, simple operation, and no secondary pollution. The application has been expanding in recent years, but membrane fouling and other problems have seriously restricted the development of membrane technology. Natural cellulose is one of the most abundant resources in nature. In addition, nanocellulose has characteristics of high strength and specific surface area, surface activity groups, as well as being pollution-free and renewable, giving it a very wide development prospect in many fields, including membrane separation technology. This paper reviews the current status of nanocellulose filtration membrane, combs the widespread types of nanocellulose and its derivatives, and summarizes the current application of cellulose in membrane separation. In addition, for the purpose of nanocellulose filtration membrane in wastewater treatment, nanocellulose membranes are divided into two categories according to the role in filtration membrane: the application of nanocellulose as membrane matrix material and as a modified additive in composite membrane in wastewater treatment. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of inorganic ceramic filtrations and nanocellulose filtrations are compared, and the application trend of nanocellulose in the filtration membrane direction is summarized and discussed.

Abstract:The characteristics and applications of nanofiltration membranes are briefly introduced. Common organic polymer nanofiltration membrane materials are reviewed,including cellulose acetate and aromatic polyamide,novel nanofiltration membrane materials covering natural polymer and polyelectrolyte , inorganic nanofiltration materials and inorganic-organic hybrid composite nanofiltration membrane materials. For these membrane materials,structural characteristics,chemical properties , membrane fabrication processes and applications are contrastingly analyzed and summarized from different perspectives,including high flux,resistance to pollution,organic solvent resistance and chlorine resistance. Then development trends and application prospects of nanofiltration membrane materials are predicted. And in the immediate future,two issues will become hot topics of research. One is the development and structure control of high-performance nanofiltration membrane materials;the other is the design of structure and function with different nanofiltration membrane materials matrixes.

Abstract:In the face of human society's great requirements for health industry, and the much stricter safety and quality standards in the biomedical industry, the demand for advanced membrane separation technologies continues to rapidly grow in the world. Nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) as the high-efficient, low energy consumption, and environmental friendly membrane separation techniques, show great promise in the application of biomedical separation field. The chemical compositions, microstructures and surface properties of NF/RO membranes determine the separation accuracy, efficiency and operation cost in their applications. Accordingly, recent studies have focused on tuning the structures and tailoring the performance of NF/RO membranes via the design and synthesis of various advanced membrane materials, and exploring universal and convenient membrane preparation strategies, with the objective of promoting the better and faster development of NF/RO membrane separation technology in the biomedical separation field. This paper reviews the recent studies on the NF/RO membranes constructed with various materials, including the polymeric materials, different dimensional inorganic/organic nanomaterials, porous polymeric materials and metal coordination polymers, etc. Moreover, the influence of membrane chemical compositions, interior microstructures, and surface characteristics on the separation performance of NF/RO membranes, are comprehensively discussed. Subsequently, the applications of NF/RO membranes in biomedical separation field are systematically reported. Finally, the perspective for future challenges of NF/RO membrane separation techniques in this field is discussed.

Abstract:The membrane technologies for liquid separation include microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration reverse osmosis and electrodialysis et al. The separation performances of the membranes processes are expressed as the flux and rejection and the operation modes are divided into the concentration and the diafiltration. There are more than three hundreds of RD research organizations and engineering corporations engaging in the membranes and membrane processes in China. In this paper, the present progress status and development tendency of the membrane technologies in China have been summarized in the fields, such as the desalination of seawater and saline water, the production of drinking water, medical pure water and ultra-pure water used in semiconductor or microelectronics industry, the treatments of wastewaters from electrodeposition and electroplating, food, sanitation, medicine, pharmacy, chemical engineering and metallurgical industries.

Abstract:Although there is a voluminous literature on the determination of structural parameters (the pore radius, the ratio of membrane porosity to membrane thickness) of a nanofiltration (NF) membrane and its separation performance (such as the rejection and the permeation flux) by the simplified Teorell-Meyer-Sievers (TMS) model, little of this research comments on other theories and the consequences of linking modeling evaluation to technological application. Theories used to predict the separation performance of an NF membrane usually include: the non-equilibrium thermodynamic model, the pore model, the space charge model, the TMS model, the electrostatic and steric-hindrance model, and the semiempirical model. In the article, we briefly trace the origins or the general ideas of the above-mentioned theories.
