Abstract:As important part of web page contents, anchor texts have been widely used and proved to be useful in web information retrieval systems, especially for the navigational queries. But previous work only focused on how to determine the importance of anchor texts for a given destination page. From global perspective, web link-structure is very useful to determine page importance, and this paper proposes a method that combines page importance and relevance between anchor texts and their destination pages together to build new anchor-based retrieval models. Experimental results show that the combined models are better than the models which only consider the relevance between anchor texts and their destination pages.

Abstract:In order to get high-quality web pages, search engines often resort retrieval pages by their ranks. The rank is a kind of measurement of importance of pages. Famous ranking algorithms, including PageRank and HITS, make use of hyperlinks to compute the importance. Those algorithms consider all hyperlinks identically in sense of recommendation. However, we find that the World Wide Web is actually organized with the natural multi-level structure. Benefiting from the level properties of pages, we can describe the recommendation of hyperlinks more reasonably and precisely. With this motivation, a new level-based link analysis algorithm is proposed in this paper. In the proposed algorithm, the recommendation weight of each hyperlink is computed with the level properties of its two endings. Experiments on the topic distillation task of TREC2003 web track show that our algorithm can evidently improve searching results as compared to previous link analysis methods.
Anchor Text and Its Context Based Web Information Retrieval

Abstract:One of the most important differences between traditional information retrieval (IR) and web IR lies in the hyperlink structure in web pages. This motivates the so-called link-based retrieval techniques for web IR. The concept of anchor description document is introduced, and then several methods of using anchor text and its context for web IR are proposed. The methods are evaluated using TREC2001 collection which contains over 1.69 million web pages. Several conclusions are drawn: Firstly, anchor text can represent precisely the topic of web page, but is insufficient in describing the web page content. Secondly, comparing with traditional content-based IR technique, using anchor text on homepage finding task can get more than 96% improvement in terms of 11-point average precision, while it is not helpful on ad hoc task even with context information. Finally, combining anchor text-based and traditional content-based techniques, more than 16% improvement of performance can be obtained.

Abstract:Anchor text plays a special important role in improving the performance of general Web search, due to the fact that it is relatively objective description for a Web page by potentially a large number of other Web pages. Academic Search provides indexing and search functionality for academic articles. It may be desirable to utilize anchor text in academic search as well to improve the search results quality. The main challenge here is that no explicit URLs and anchor text is available for academic articles. In this paper we define and automatically assign a pseudo-URL for each academic article. And a machine learning approach is adopted to extract pseudo-anchor text for academic articles, by exploiting the citation relationship between them. The extracted pseudo-anchor text is then indexed and involved in the relevance score computation of academic articles. Experiments conducted on 0.9 million research papers show that our approach is able to dramatically improve search performance.

Abstract:This paper reviews currently dominating webpage ranking algorithms,improves the ARC algorithm among of them,and proposes an algorithm based on hyperlink and content—the SHITS(Similarity-HITS)algorithm.The SHITS algorithm uses the webpage content cited by the hyperlinks to evaluate the importance of these hyperlinks instead of the anchors used in the ARC algorithm,which not only improves the ability to differentiate the importance of hyperlinks,but also needn't analyze the content of the numerous anchors in web pages.From the contrastive experiment with the related algorithms, the result shows that the precision of the SHITS algorithm was significantly higher than that of other algorithms. Furthermore, the SHITS algorithm has a good performance:its computational cost is smaller than that of the ARC algorithm, and approximate to that of the HITS algorithm.

Abstract:Web hyperlink structure analysis algorithm plays a significant role in improving the precision of Web information retrieval. Current link algorithms employ iteration function to compute the Web resource weight. The major drawback of this approach is that every Web document has a fixed rank which is independent of Web queries. This paper proposes an improved algorithm that ranks the quality and the relevance of a page according to users' query dynamically. The experiments show that the current link analysis algorithm is improved.

Abstract:Anchor texts complement Web page content and have been used extensively in commercial Web search engines. Existing methods for anchor text weighting rely on the hyperlink information which is created by page content editors. Since anchor texts are created to help user browse the Web, browsing behavior of Web users may also provide useful or complementary information for anchor text weighting. In this paper, we discuss the possibility and effectiveness of incorporating browsing activities of Web users into anchor texts for Web search. We first make an analysis on the effectiveness of anchor texts with browsing activities. And then we propose two new anchor models which incorporate browsing activities. To deal with the data sparseness problem of user-clicked anchor texts, two features of user’s browsing behavior are explored and analyzed. Based on these features, a smoothing method for the new anchor models is proposed. Experimental results show that by incorporating browsing activities the new anchor models outperform the state-of-art anchor models which use only the hyperlink information. This study demonstrates the benefits of Web browsing activities to affect anchor text weighting.
Pseudo-Anchor Text Extraction for Vertical Search

Abstract:Anchor text plays a special important role in improving the performance of general Web search. The importance of anchor text comes from the fact that it is fairly objective description for a Web page by potentially a large amount of other Web pages. Vertical search provides indexing and search functionality for objects in a certain domain, and is becoming an important supplement for general Web search. It is desired to utilize anchor text in vertical search as well to improve search performance. Vertical objects typically lack explicit URLs to accurately identify them. The anchor-text of a vertical object is also hard to acquire explicitly. This paper proposes concepts of pseudo-URL and pseudo-anchor-text for vertical objects, corresponding to the URL and anchor-text of a general Web page. For extracting and utilizing pseudo-anchor-text information of vertical objects, we focus on candidate anchor block accumulation and pseudo-anchor extraction in this paper. State-of-the-art data integration techniques are utilized to accumulate candidate anchor blocks belonging to same objects. Pseudo-anchor text for each object is extracted from its candidate anchor blocks using a machine learning based approach. A case study in academic search domain indicates that our approach is able to dramatically improve search performance.

Abstract:Link-based ranking algorithm is very important for current success and popular of Web Search Engine. In order to get high rank, some try to improve contents of web pages while others just put dirty tricks, such as link spam. Link spam is a trick targeting at link-based ranking algorithms by artificially created tight link structures to push some target pages get undeserved high ranks. This problem becomes even worse with the advent of wikis, blogs, forums, which are rich in links. We tackle the problem of improving link-based ranking by more fundamental viewpoint--"noisy link" analysis. Motivated by how "non-voting" hyperlinks affect quality of ranking, we propose an approach and corresponding penalty strategies to both detect and handle "noisy link" effectively and automatically. We also compared our approach with other related works to demonstrate that our approach is rather effective in noisy link filtering and could improve the final search results significantly.

Abstract:Anchor texts have been extensively used and have proven to be effective over the years in commercial Web search engines; however, anchor texts are created freely without any supervision, which causes there to be a large number of noises and spam in anchor texts. Moreover, for transactional queries, which need measurements of service quality, destination, Web pages of anchor texts are not always consistent with user experience. To overcome these problems, this paper focuses on the large scale of the user Web browsing behavior data. This paper first proposes a framework for a retrieval effectiveness measurement. Then, based on this framework, analyze the relation between the user Web browsing behavior data and retrieval effectiveness of anchor texts is analyzed. The properties of a user Web browsing behavior, which are useful for Web search, are mined and quantified. Experimental results show that the proposed method offers an accurate evaluation on the retrieval effectiveness of anchor texts. © 2011 ISCAS.

Abstract:With the development of Web technology and more kinds of information, how to provide high quality, relevant search results become a huge challenge to the current Web search engines. We analyze the shortcomings of PageRank algorithm and Weighted PageRank algorithms and make targeted improvements. By judging the relation between different web pages based on web content, the improved PageRank algorithm improved the user search precision.

Abstract:Link analysis algorithms have been extensively used in Web information retrieval. However, current link analysis algorithms generally work on a flat link graph, ignoring the hierarchal structure of the Web graph. They often suffer from two problems: the sparsity of link graph and biased ranking of newly-emerging pages. In this paper, we propose a novel ranking algorithm called Hierarchical Rank as a solution to these two problems, which considers both the hierarchical structure and the link structure of the Web. In this algorithm, Web pages are first aggregated based on their hierarchical structure at directory, host or domain level and link analysis is performed on the aggregated graph. Then, the importance of each node on the aggregated graph is distributed to individual pages belong to the node based on the hierarchical structure. This algorithm allows the importance of linked Web pages to be distributed in the Web page space even when the space is sparse and contains new pages. Experimental results on the .GOV collection of TREC 2003 and 2004 show that hierarchical ranking algorithm consistently outperforms other well-known ranking algorithms, including the PageRank, BlockRank and LayerRank. In addition, experimental results show that link aggregation at the host level is much better than link aggregation at either the domain or directory levels.

Abstract:People today may participate in multiple social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc.). Predicting the correspondence of the accounts that refer to the same natural person across multiple social networks is a significant and challenging problem. Formally, social networks that outline the relationships of a common group of people are defined as aligned networks, and the correspondence of the accounts that refer to the same natural person across aligned networks are defined as anchor links. In this paper, we learn the problem of Anchor Link Prediction (ALP). Firstly, two similarity metrics (Bi-Similarity BiS and Reliability Similarity ReS) are proposed to measure the similarity between nodes in aligned networks. And we prove mathematically that the node pair with the maximum BiS has higher probability to be an anchor link and a correctly predicted anchor link must have high ReS. Secondly, we present an iterative algorithm to solve the problem of ALP efficiently. Also, we discuss the termination of the algorithm to give a tradeoff between precision and recall. Finally, we conduct a series of experiments on both synthetic social networks and real social networks to confirm the effectiveness of our approach.

Abstract:ABSTRACTLink Analysis has shown great potential in improving the performance of web search. PageRank and HITS are two of the most popular algorithms. Most of the existing link analysis algorithms treat a web page as a single node in the web graph. However, in most cases, a web page contains multiple semantics and hence the web page might not be considered as the atomic node. In this paper, the web page is partitioned into blocks using the vision-based page segmentation algorithm. By extracting the page-to-block, block-to-page relationships from link structure and page layout analysis, we can construct a semantic graph over the WWW such that each node exactly represents a single semantic topic. This graph can better describe the semantic structure of the web. Based on block-level link analysis, we proposed two new algorithms, Block Level PageRank and Block Level HITS, whose performances we study extensively using web data.

Abstract:This paper studied the effects of using of link information for Web IR in TREC experiment,including link anchor text,link structure and the combination of link-based retrieval and traditional content-based retrieval.Several conclusions are drawn:Firstly,anchor text can represent precisely the topic of Web page,but insufficient in describing the Web page content.Secondly,comparing with traditional content-based IR technique,using link-based approach on homepage finding task can get more than 96% improvement,while it is not helpful on ad hoc task.Finally,combining link-based and content-based techniques makes consistent 48% to 124.8% improvement on homepage finding task and some progress on ad hoc task.
