On Spatial Disparity and Determinants of Urbanization in the Middle Area of China since 2000

Abstract:In the present age,the middle area has been playing significant roles in China's urbanization.Based on the data of 2000,2005 and 2008,this paper shows that the overall level of urbanization in the middle area is lower than the average level of China,however,the speed of urbanization progress is substantial faster.By calculating the imbalance index and decomposing changes in Lorenz curves,the results indicate that there is an obvious spatial disparity of urbanization in the middle area of China.But a discernible trend of convergence could be described from 2000 to 2008.The area on prefectural level with higher urbanization speed has transferred from the outer to the inner of the region.Regression analysis reveals that the main factors influencing the process of urbanization are different in the different year.The research finds that the economic level and the percentage of the tertiary industry have remarkable effects in promoting urbanization in central China,but the foreign direct investment did not play a significant effect on urbanization in the middle area of China.
