Abstract:How to deconstruct traditional culture and use it in contemporary practices has become one of the key problems in modern architecture, as modernism proved its failure in including human lifestyle in the building, and lack of consideration of how local culture portrays people and whether it should be included in design. regions with rich traditional cultures face modern urban development and architectural revolution. This paper focuses on how local Japanese architect has deconstructed traditional culture and used it in their contemporary architectural practice, by analyzing works and interviews from Ando Tadao and Kuma Kengo with their different approach in their architectural practice through philosophical and visual deconstruction of Japanese culture. This paper has concluded some key aspect in the field of using traditional Japanese element in modern architecture reviewed how their approaches has been viewed and commented on, and provided some paths that could be used in future architects when comes to projects that include some aspect of traditional local culture.

Abstract:Architecture itself is a witness to social and cultural development, so the study on it should not only focus on the material symbols but also pay more attention to the multiple roles played by its material space in a specific social–cultural construction from multiple perspectives, residential buildings are no exception. Based on the dialectical analysis of Levi Strauss's house society concept and Lefebvre's spatial ternary theory, this paper attempts to sort out the triple theory of the house space; taking Chinese well-preserved Guanzhong Narrow Courtyard in the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368–1912) as an example, it starts from the three aspects of housing space which are material presentation, reconstruction and innovation, and potential circulating capital in the social production and reproduction to explore a qualitative research of the house space, and tries to reappear the metaphorical relationship between housing space of Chinese Guanzhong Narrow Courtyard and social–cultural construction in a historical period of social and cultural development, and explain its profound connotation; from the perspective of sociology, it provides inspiration and lays a foundation for the research on the design of the house space in the transition from the traditional society to the modern society in the specific area.

Abstract:Three courtyards nine halls is an important cultural asset in eastern Zhejiang. This paper takes Three courtyards nine halls dwellings in the eastern part of Zhejiang province of China as the research object, collecting data with field research, measurement, interviews and other research methods, to analyze the spatial characteristics and construction culture of traditional dwellings. Research findings: First, influenced by the natural environment, artificial environment and social environment, three courtyards nine halls is a complex of residential buildings with san-ho-yuan as a unit, extending vertically and horizontally. Second, with the influences of the Confucian culture, the architectural layout is symmetrically distributed along the central axis, and the architectural space presents a high degree of consistency. Third, the architectural complex was formed by the same clan. The last one is that the architectural form and culture show consistency, which implies the idea of harmony between man and nature, the farming and studying hand down from generation to generation. On the one hand, with the acceleration of the urbanization process, living conditions have been greatly improved. On the other hand, due to the weak awareness of residents’ protection of traditional residential cultural assets, lack of systematic study on traditional residential construction methods, construction techniques and space culture, new buildings are not in harmony with traditional dwellings, therefore, traditional dwellings are seriously damaged. This paper discusses the sustainable development of traditional residential culture by studying the construction and environmental elements of Three courtyards nine halls, taking the residential space as a principal part to analyze the characteristics, functional attributes, organizational principles, order, and sense of place.

Abstract:Architecture is a carrier of culture, as well as a product of one certain historical period. Influenced by the traditional culture over a long period of time, Huizhou folk houses have formed their own decorative design style with unique regional features. The article explores the design ideas on the decorative art of Huizhou ancient folk houses through formation and development of the decorative style, decorative characteristics, adornment subjects and decorative crafts. Based on it, the article excavates modern significance and value of the decorative art of Huizhou ancient folk houses, trying to get some references and enlightenments on modern architectural decorative design.

Abstract:The ancient villages in Minnan keep a large number of western-style buildings.By referring to these buildings which are different from traditional residence architectures in style of arts,this paper takes Fuquan Ancient Village in Jinjiang as an example,analyzing the causes for its western-style building’s advent and development from the natural setting,Chinese emigration and remittance,regional historical culture and the process of the variation of art,revealing the fact: the traditional residence architecture is the prototype of the western-style building on spatial morphological evolvement of arts,and the western model and decoration promote the formation of the unique form.Meanwhile,the immaterial appreciation of the building derives from the need of the family system,the spirit link,the geographical social culture and the group spirit.All of these come from the exchange of different cultures.

Abstract:In Shanghai,the architectures of Pudong had a modernized process different from the architectures of Puxi district which were influenced by the Hesperian colonial culture.The local peasantry of Pudong built their own modernized architectures just to satisfy their necessity according to the small-scale farming living but not the city existence. So the citified style was ostensibly imitated in these “new” buildings. Actually,their inherent tradition,and rural life were never infected by those changes ~occurred on architectures.

Abstract:Various terrain of Tibet Plateau brings distinctive colorful traditional buildings. This article analyzes ancient and modern architecture in Lhasa from two clues, in lengthways from the time change to analyze tradition inheritance and evolution while in breadthways go deep into the characteristic of the space, structure, material, color, etc. It describes distinctive form of the doors and windows and analyzes their origin. Through analyzing examples such as Tibet Museum and Lhasa Railway Station, it reveals the development of modern Lhasa buildings from appearance imitation to culture annotation.

Abstract:The Tujia people have a long history and unique cultural traditions.The folk-house art found in western Hubei Province,P.R.China,is a typical representation of Tujia culture.Its external form,inner dealings,and its fit with the nature not only are the results of a perfect combination of practicality,aesthetics,and the combination of buildings with the environment,but these traits also embody the Tujia people's understanding of life and beauty.This article tries to find the deep-seated cultural foundations and spirits of Tujia traditional housing by researching and analyzing the aesthetic characteristics of its architectural form.The article also takes in the design essence of Tujia traditional housing for use in modern construction.

Abstract:The United Nations and local governments have supported a four-point sustainable development framework, including environmental responsibility, economic viability, social equity, and cultural vitality. This study is based on the theoretical framework of sustainability to study the traditional Chinese siheyuan residence. Space syntax attempts to explain how spatial structures express social or cultural significance, such as the hierarchical relationship and privacy in it. The main purposes of this study are: (1) To analyze the spatial topological layout of traditional siheyuans by using the space syntax theory, and thus deduce the cultural connotation embedded in traditional siheyuans; (2) to compare and analyze the spatial morphology and behavior patterns of traditional and modern houses; (3) to explore how to integrate courtyard features into contemporary design and promote cultural sustainability. This study expounds the concept and application of syntactic analysis, and the relationship between the syntactic attributes of specific buildings in a particular area, and the culture and life of the local people within that area. As time goes by, the spatial form of houses has changed. However, in terms of spatial allocation index, the significant difference between traditional residences and modern residences lies in the integration and equivalence of all spaces in residences. We can learn from the cultural values of traditional siheyuans, meaning “people-oriented”, to rationally design modern residences with cultural connotations.
