Abstract:Background and purpose:The incidence of brain metastasis is high in lung cancer and the survival time is short when this occurs. This study was done to provide referential data by analysis of survival for the patients with brain metastases from lung cancer in Zhongshan Hospital,Fudan University. Methods:The patients were diagnosed for brain metastasis from lung primary cancer by CT and MRI imaging from 2000 to 2005. The brain metastasis was treated through parallel fields radiotherapy with 6-8 MV photons. The dose was 40 Gy in the first 4 weeks for the whole brain plus a dose of 10-20 Gy in 1-2 weeks if only single brain metastasis existed.Results:① The average age was 60.4±8.4 years. The average survival time was 8.0±5.9months if KPS score was more than 50 and dose range was 40-60 Gy (mean =51 Gy).② Control of primary lung cancer and occurence of metastasis to the lung or bone were the factors influencing survival and prognosis.③ The survival time was longer for single brain metastases. Conclusions:The influential factors influencing survival and prognosis is primary lung tumor control and existence of metastasis to lung and bone.
