Abstract:A series of mono- and di-nuclear nickel(II) complexes bearing 3-aryliminomethyl-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde ligands were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and elemental analysis along with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the dinuclear nickel complexes formed with two bridged ligands and one bromide around each nickel center and the mononuclear nickel complexes bearing two centrosymmetrical ligands exhibited a distorted square-planar geometry. Upon activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO), all these nickel complexes displayed high catalytic activities up to 9.88 × 107 g(PNB) mol−1(Ni) h−1 (6b) for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene, yielding the vinyl-type PNBs with high molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. The steric and electronic factors of ligands and reaction parameters had influences on the catalytic properties.

Abstract:A series of nickel and palladium complexes bearing (imino)pyridyl alcohol tridentate [N,N,O] ligands, 2-(ArNCMe)-6-{(HO)CR2}C5H3N (L1–L4), were synthesized and sufficiently characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analysis along with X-ray diffraction analysis. The X-ray diffraction demonstrated that five-coordinated nickel halide complexes (1a–4a and 1b) and six-coordinated nickel acetate complex (1c) were prepared, and cationic palladium complexes (1d and 2d) formed with the [PdCl4]2− counterion. All these complexes displayed high catalytic activities up to 1.883 × 107 g(PNB) mol−1(cat) h−1 (2d) for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene on treatment with excess methylaluminoxane (MAO), affording the vinyl-type PNBs with high molecular weights and relatively narrow molecular weight distributions. The parameters of reaction conditions, the type of metals and steric effects of coordinative ligands had influences on the catalytic properties.

Abstract:A series of nickel complexes, bis(salicylideneiminato)nickel(II), were supported on spherical MgCl 2 and SiO 2 . Scanning electron microscopy, energy‐dispersed X‐ray spectroscopy, and the BET method for surface areas measurements were utilized to examine the supporting process of the catalysts. The particle morphology of the original support is retained and replicated throughout the supported catalyst preparation and norbornene polymerization. Abstract:A series of nickel(II) α-diimine complexes with strong electron-withdrawing carboxyl groups, having reactive hydrogen atoms, were prepared and used as precatalysts for ethylene oligomerization and/or polymerization. The influence of metal halides and ligand structure on the catalytic activity and properties of products was investigated. The results showed that nickel bromide was much more active than nickel chloride, and the substituents at the ortho-position of aryl ring had large influence on the properties of products. Therefore, the products ranging from liquid oligomers to polymers could be readily obtained by the variation of the substituents on the ligands and reaction conditions.

Abstract:Four beta-ketoimine ligands ( two series) were prepared through traditional condensation reactions of beta-diketones with 2,6-substituted anilines. Reaction took place only at the cyclohexanone carbonyl rather than at the acetyl or benzoyl carbonyl, even if more than two equivalents of the amines were added. Consequently, four new moisture- and air-stable bis(beta- ketoamino) nickel(II) complexes, Ni[2-CH3C(O)C6H8(NAr)](2) (Ar=2, 6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3), (1); Ar=2, 6-Me2C6H3, (2) and Ni[2-PhC(O)C6H8(NAr)](2) (Ar=2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3), (3); Ar=2, 6-Me2C6H3, (4) were obtained and characterized. The solid-state structures of complex 1, 2 and 3 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Additionally, these complexes can be applied as highly active catalyst precursors for vinyl polymerization of norbornene (NBE) after activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO).

Abstract:The o-carborane [S,C] ligand 1 (1-(2'-(S)PPh(2))-o-carborane) was prepared by the reaction of a monophosphino o-carborane with elemental sulfur in the presence of Et(3)N. Ligand 1 was lithiated with n-BuLi and then reacted with (Ph(3)P)Ni(Ph)Cl(2), Ni(PPh(3))(2)Cl(2), and (DME)NiBr(2), respectively, to give the same mononuclear Ni complex [1-(2'-(S)PPh(2))-o-carborane](2)Ni (2). Additionally, the lithium salt of ligand 1 was treated with elemental sulfur and then reacted with (Ph(3)P)Ni(Ph)Cl(2), affording the mononuclear Ni complex [1-S-(2'-(S)PPh(2))-o-carborane](2)Ni (3). Ni complexes 2 and 3 were characterized by IR, (1)H NMR, and (31)P NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. In addition, an X-ray structure analysis was performed on complex 2, where the o-carborane [S,C] ligand 1 was found to coordinate in a bidentate mode. EXAFS spectroscopy was performed on complex 3 to confirm that the coordination geometry was similar to that for complex 2. Two nickel complexes with carborane [S,C] or [S,S] ligands show good catalytic activities for the addition polymerization of norbornene in the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO) as cocatalyst. Catalytic activities, molecular weights, and molecular weight distributions of polynorbornene (PNB) have been investigated under various reaction conditions.

Abstract:A series of neutral nickel complexes [Ni(Ph)(PPh3)(N, O)] with Schiff-base ligands (N, O) [N, O = 5-Me-3-tert-Bu-(Ar-N=CH)C6H2O (1, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3; 2, Ar = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3)], [Ni(Ph)(PPh3)(N,O)1, with beta-ketiminato ligands (N, O) [N, O = CH3COCHC=(CH3)N-Ar (3, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3; 4, Ar = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3)] and [Ni(N, N)(PPh3)], and with beta-diketiminato ligands (N, N) [5, N, N = [2,6-i-Pr-2(C6H3)N=C(CH3)](2)CH] have been synthesized and characterized. The molecular structures of complexes 1, 4, and 5 have been confirmed by X-ray single-crystal analyses. Although their ligands have similar structures, complex 4 possesses a structure similar to that of four-coordination nickel with complex 1, while complex 5 reveals a rare three-coordination nickel geometry. These compounds show high catalytic activities of up to 3.16 x 10(7) g PNB mol(-1) Ni h(-1) for the addition polymerization of norbornene in the presence of modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as cocatalyst. Catalytic activities, polymer yield, molecular weights, and molecular weight distributions of polyborbornene have been investigated under various reaction conditions.

Abstract:A series of novel nickel complexes (1-4) bearing anilido-imine ligands, [((ArN)-N-1=CHC6H4NAr2)NiBr](2) (Ar-1 = Ar-2 = 2,6-dimethylphenyl, 1; Ar-1 = 2,6-dimethylphenyl, Ar-2 = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, 2; Ar-1 = Ar-2 = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, 3; Ar-1 = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, Ar-2 = 2,6-dimethylphenyl, 4), have been synthesized and characterized. The solid-state structures of the complexes 1, 2, and 4 were confirmed by X-ray single-crystal analyses to be in the form of a dinuclear and bromine-bridged structure. However, there is an equilibrium that shifts between the monomer and dimer in solution, which has been monitored using H-1 NMR and UV-vis spectrophotometry. The themodynamic parameters for the equilibriums were calculated to be DeltaH = +13.68 kJ/mol and DeltaS = 40.32 J/(mol K) for 1 and DeltaH = +8.35 kJ/mol and DeltaS = 15.21 J/(mol K) for 3. All nickel complexes show low activities for ethylene oligomerization with MAO as cocatalyst but high catalytic activities for norbornene polymerization in the presence of MAO.

Abstract:The novel chloro(1-naphthyl) [8-(diphenylphosphino) quinoline] nickel(II) (1), chloro(1-naphthyl) [2-methyl-8( diphenylphosphino) quinoline] nickel(II) (2), and [2-methyl-8- (diphenylphosphino) quinoline] nickel(II) dichloride ( 3) complexes were synthesized in satisfactory yield and fully characterized. The structures of complexes 1 and 3 were determined by single crystal X-ray analysis, which indicated that complex 1 exists in a square planar configuration, while complex 3 is dimeric square pyramidal. In the presence of MAO cocatalyst, complexes 1 3 displayed good catalytic activities for ethylene oligomerization in toluene, up to 2.45 x 10(5) g ethylene ( mol Ni.h.atm)(-1) by complex 3.

Abstract:Three monoamidinate nickel complexes were synthesized, characterized and used as pre-catalyst for ethylene oligomerization and norbronene polymerization. The nickel complexes oligomerized ethylene producing a mixture of dimers and trimers with a moderate turnover frequency, while exhibited very high activity for the vinyl-addition polymerization of norbornene in the presence of MAO.

Abstract:A series of neutral salicylaldiminato Ni(II) complexes have been synthesized and characterized, and complexes a and e have been confirmed by X-ray single-crystal analyses. These compounds show highly catalytic activities for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene with MAO cocatalyst, which could be up to 2.86 x 10(8) g PNB/(mol Ni(.)h), and also lead to various activities, molecular weights, and distributions of polynorbornenes under different reaction conditions.

Abstract:A series of new cobalt and nickel complexes LMX2 (M=Co, X=Cl; M=Ni, X=Br) bearing 2, 6-bis(imino)phenoxy ligands were synthesized. The solid-state structures of 1 and 4 have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. Treatment of the complexes LMX2 with methylaluminoxane (MAO) leads to active catalysts for oligomerization of ethylene with catalytic activities in the range of 1.2×105–2.1×105 g mol−1 h−1 atm−1 for Ni complexes, and ∼103 g mol−1 h−1 atm−1 for Co complexes. The oligomers were olefins from C4 to C16.

Abstract:Series of 2-R1-6-(1-R2-4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)pyridine (R1=R2=H, L1; R1=Me, R2=H, L2; R1=H, R2=Me, L3; R1=R2=Me, L4), 2-(6-R1-pyridin-2-yl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (R1=H, L5; R1=Me, L6) and 2-(pyridin-2-yl)phenanthro[9,10-d]oxazole (L7) were synthesized and used to prepare their corresponding dihalonickel complexes (C1–C9). All organic compounds and nickel complexes were characterized by elemental and spectroscopic analyses. Molecular structures of C1, C4, C5 and C8 were confirmed by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed complex C1 as a distorted octahedral geometry, complex C4 as a distorted square pyramidal geometry, complex C5 as a distorted trigonal bipyramidal configuration, and complex C8 as a tetrahedral geometry. Upon activation with methylaluminoxane (MAO), the nickel complexes showed good activity towards norbornene polymerization through main additional and minor ring-opening metathesis. The reaction parameters such as norbornene concentration, reaction temperature and different coordinate environments caused by the ligands affected their catalytic performances.

Abstract:The N,N,N-tridentate quinolinyl anilido–imine ligands 2-(ArNC(H))C6H4–HNC9H6N (LaH, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3; LbH, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) and 2-(C9H6N)NC(H)C6H4–HNAr (LcH, Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3; LdH, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3) were synthesized and characterized. Reactions of these ligands with nBuLi and subsequent additions of NiCl2(DME) afford the N,N,N-tridentate nickel complexes [2-(ArNC(H))C6H4–NC9H6N]NiCl (Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3 (1a), 2,6-iPr2C6H3 (1b)) and [2-(C9H6N)NC(H)C6H4–NAr]NiCl (Ar = 2,6-Me2C6H3 (2a), 2,6-iPr2C6H3 (2b)). All the complexes were fully characterized by NMR and elemental analyses. X-ray diffraction analyses of 1b and 2b revealed an almost square-planar geometry around the metal center. When activated with MAO, these nickel complexes can be used as catalysts for the vinyl addition polymerization of norbornene affording high molecular weight polymer.

Abstract:Treatment of the o-hydroxyaryl imidazolinium proligands (2-OH-3,5-(Bu2C6H2)-Bu-t)(R)(C3H3N2)Br-+(-) [R = Pr-i (1a), Bu-t (1b), Ph (1c), Mes (1d)] with NiL2Cl2 (L = PPh3, Py) or Ni(OAc)(2)center dot 4H(2)O afforded the corresponding cis bis(aryloxide-NHC) nickel complexes 2-5. Notably, the products were independent from the pro-ligands/Ni ratios. The same complexes were obtained with the pro-ligands/Ni ratio of 1:1 or 2:1. All the complexes were characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and elemental analysis. The molecular structures of the aryloxide-NHC-ligated nickel complexes 2-5 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. With methylaluminoxane (MAO) as cocatalyst, the nickel complexes showed moderate catalytic activities (10(6) g of PNB (mol of Ni)(-1) h(-1)) in the addition polymerization of norbomene.

Abstract:A series of salicylaldimine-based neutral Ni(II) complexes (3a-j) [ArN = CH(C6H40)]Ni(PPh3)Ph [3a,Ar = C6H5; 3b,Ar = C6H4F(o); 3c, Ar = C6H4F(m); 3d, Ar = C6H4F(p); 3e, Ar = C6H3F2(2,4); 3f, Ar = C6H3F2(2,5); 3g, Ar = C6H3F2(2,6); 3h, Ar = C6H3F2(3,5); 3i, Ar = C6H2F3(3,4,5); 3j, Ar = C6H5] have been synthesized in good yield, and the structures of complexes 3a and 3i have been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Using modified methylaluminoxane as a cocatalyst, these neutral Ni(II) complexes exhibited high catalytic activities for the vinylic polymerization of norbornene. It was observed that the strong electron-withdrawing effect of the fluorinated salicylaidiminato ligand was able to significantly increase the catalyst activity for vinylic polymerization of norbornenes. In addition, catalyst activity, polymer yield and polymer molecular weight can also be controlled over a wide range by the variation of reaction parameters such as Al:Ni ratio, norbornene: catalyst ratio, monomer concentration, polymerization temperature and time. Abstract:A series of new N,N,S tridentate nickel(II) complexes [(ArN = CHC6H4NPh-2-SPh)NiBr] (Ar = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, 1; Ar = 2,6-dimethylphenyl, 2; Ar = Ph, 3) and palladium(II) complexes [(ArN = CHC6H4NPh-2-SPh)PdCH3] (Ar = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, 4; Ar = 2,6-dimethylphenyl, 5; Ar = Ph, 6) were synthesized and characterized. X-ray diffraction analyses of the single-crystal structures revealed that tridentate complexes 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 featured a distorted square-planar coordination of the central metal. Compared to the bidentate metal complexes bearing anilido-imine ligands, the N,N,S tridentate metal complexes showed better stability. In the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO), nickel complexes 1-3 showed moderate activity toward ethylene oligomerization at atmosphere pressure, but the palladium complexes were inactive. However, the nickel complexes exhibited high activity tip to 8.20 x 10(6) g/(mol of Ni) h and palladium complexes showed very high activity up to 2.68 x 10(8) g/(mol of Pd) h toward norbornene polymerization with MAO as cocatalyst. Synthesis and Characterization of New Bis(1-Aryliminomethylenylnaphthalen-2-oxy)nickel Complexes and Their Catalytic Behavior for Vinyl Polymerization of Norbornene

Abstract:The synthesized 1-aryliminomethylenylnaphthalen-2-ol derivatives reacted with nickel chloride to form bis(1-arylimino-methylenylnaphthalen-2-oxy)nickel complexes. All resultant compounds were structurally characterized by elemental analyses, IR and H NMR, and the structures of the formed complexes were elucidated by X-ray crystal structure analysis. The complexes show high catalytic activities for the vinyl polymerization of norbornene in the presence of methylaluminoxane. The catalytic activity variations have been followed by gas chromatography through monitoring the conversion of norbornene. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
