Language Adaptation of Local and Non-native Residents During Urbanization： Cases of Hefei, Nanjing and Beijing

Abstract:The paper focuses on urban language adaptation behavior based on the data collected in Hefei, Nanjing and Beijing. The results show that both local and nonnative residents have language adaptation behavior, which exists in their micro-and macrolanguage use. The tendency of the adaptation is to use the advantageous code or variety and to avoid the stigmatized one. This leads to subtle change in the systems of putonghua and the dialects. The obvious change of language use is the expanding of advantageous variety and the shrinking of stigmatized one.
