Abstract:A study was conducted to investigate the adaptability of different alfalfa varieties (Zhaodong, Zhunger and CW200) to winter climes by means of measuring contents of Soluble sugar, free praline, amino acid and malondialdehyde (MDA) in roots during different periods in alpine regions. Results showed that the contents of soluble sugar, proline, amino acid and MDA in alfalfa roots had significant differences between different varieties and different periods. The quantities of soluble sugar, proline, amino acid accumulated in roots of Zhaodong were higher than those of other two varieties, and the contents of soluble sugar, proline, amino acid in roots of CW200 were the lowest among experimental varieties. During the initial period before winter coming, the contents of MDA in roots of these three varieties were very high, but they reduced with temperature dropping and maintained a steady value after December. By comparison, the content of MDA in roots of Zhunget was lower obviously than that of other varieties, and that of CW200 was the highest. It is suggested that Zhunger is more adaptive to winter climes in alpine regions.
