Abstract:Using exact diagonalization method,we studied the ground state of the anisotropic molecular magnets and find a critical point in the transverse field,which may divide the quantum tunneling region into two different parts. Abstract:We study the spin-boson model (SBM) with two spins in an antiferromagnetic bias field by a numerically exact method based on variational matrix product states. Several observables such as the magnetization, the entanglement entropy between the two spins and the bosonic environment, the ground-state energy, as well as the correlation function for two spins are calculated exactly. The characteristics of these observables suggest that the antiferromagnetic bias field can drive the 2nd-order quantum phase transition (QPT) to the 1st-order QPT in the sub-Ohmic SBM and the Kosterlitz-Thouless QPT directly to the 1st-order one in the Ohmic SBM. A quantum tricritical point, where the continuous QPT meets the 1st-order one, can be then detected. It is found that the antiferromagnetic bias field would not change the universality of this model below the quantum tricritical point.

Abstract:We use an alternative method to investigate the quantum criticality at zero and finite temperature using trace distance along with the density matrix renormalization group. It is shown that the average correlation measured by the trace distance between the system block and environment block in a DMRG sweep is able to detect the critical points of quantum phase transitions at finite temperature. As illustrative examples, we study spin-1 XXZ chains with uniaxial single-ion-type anisotropy and the Heisenberg spin chain with staggered coupling and external magnetic field. It is found that the trace distance shows discontinuity at the critical points of quantum phase transition and can be used as an indicator of QPTs.

Abstract:We report neutron scattering and thermodynamic measurements of the quasi-one-dimensional Ising magnet SrCo2V2O8 under transverse fields along the tetragonal a/b direction. Our experiments reveal a Neel-type magnetic order in zero field, which successively changes into a coplanar antiferromagnetic order in applied fields. The detailed evolution of the noncollinear magnetic order inmagnetic fields can be understood by considering the competition between the intrinsic magnetic interactions, uniform transverse field, and effective staggered field. Moreover, a series of gapped discrete confined-spinon modes are observed in zero field. With increasing field, the spin gap progressively softens, reaching a minimum value at similar to 7 T where the Neel-type magnetic ordering moment is completely suppressed. This corresponds to the three-dimensional quantum critical point (QCP). The implications for multiple QCPs in this class of materials are discussed.

Abstract:Quantum phase transitions occur at zero temperature upon variation of some nonthermal control parameters. The Ising chain in a transverse field is probably the most-studied model undergoing such a transition, from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic state1,2. This model can be exactly solved by using a Jordan-Wigner transformation, which transforms the spins into noninteracting spinless fermions1. At the quantum critical point, the magnetic excitations can carry arbitrarily low energy and dominate the low temperature properties. Here we report the unveiling of such quantum critical point in quasi-one-dimensional Ising ferromagnet CoNb2O6 by ultra-low-temperature thermal conductivity measurements. We find that in the paramagnetic state, phonons are scattered by the magnetic excitations above certain temperature Ts, which corresponds to a gap. As predicted by the theoretical model1, this gap linearly goes to zero with decreasing the transverse field, thus determining the quantum critical point of the Ising chain.

Abstract:Field-tuned quantum tunneling of the supramolecular magnet [Mn-4](2) is studied. It is a dimer constructed by two single-molecular clusters, Mn-4(S=9/2), coupled antiferromagnetically. By means of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation, The exact solution of the time dependent quantum state is numerically calculated. We obtain the curve of magnetization versus magnetic field applied along the easy axis of magnetization of [Mn-4](2); it clearly displays steplike features separated by plateaus that are relevant to spin tunneling. Our result shows that transition of magnetization is sensitive to the sweep rate. Some resonance transitions may not occur, but they can occur at a more lower sweeping rate of the applied field. Our theoretical result agrees well with the recent experiment [W. Wernsdorfer et al., Nature (London) 416, 406 (2002)].

Abstract:CoNb 2 O 6 is a model system for a spin-1/2 one-dimensional (1D) transverse-field Ising magnet (TFIM) with a rather low 3D Neel ordering temperature at T N = 2.95 K. We studied CoNb 2 O 6 using ultrasound measurements down to 0.3 K in transverse magnetic fields applied along the b direction. Upon entering the 3D ordered state, we observe pronounced anomalies in the transverse acoustic mode c 66 . In particular, from 1.3 to 1.5 K and around 4.7 T, this mode reveals an almost diverging softening, which is considerably reduced at lower and higher magnetic fields. We interpret this as an influence of quantum critical fluctuations emerging from the quantum critical point (QCP) of the 1D Ising spin chains at about 4.75 T, which lies below the QCP of the 3D ordering at about 5.4 T. This is clear experimental evidence of the predicted generic phase diagram for a TFIM with superimposed 3D ordering.

Abstract:Mottness is at the heart of the essential physics in a strongly correlated system as many novel quantum phenomena occur in the metallic phase near the Mott metal-insulator transition. We investigate the Mott transition in a Hubbard model by using the dynamical mean-field theory and introduce the local quantum state fidelity to depict the Mott metal-insulator transition. The local quantum state fidelity provides a convenient approach for determining the critical point of the Mott transition. Additionally, it presents a consistent description of the two distinct forms of the Mott transition points.

Abstract:By Lanczos exact diagonalization and the infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) technique, the two-site entanglement as well as the bipartite entanglement, the ground state energy, the nearest-neighbor correlations, and the magnetization in the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg (AFH) model under an external field are investigated. With increasing external field, the small size system shows some distinct upward magnetization stairsteps, accompanied synchronously with some downward two-site entanglement stairsteps. In the thermodynamic limit, the two-site entanglement, as well as the bipartite entanglement, the ground state energy, the nearest-neighbor correlations, and the magnetization are calculated, and the critical magnetic field h(c) = 2.0 is determined exactly. Our numerical results show that the quantum entanglement is sensitive to the subtle changing of the ground state, and can be used to describe the magnetization and quantum phase transition. Based on the discontinuous behavior of the first-order derivative of the entanglement entropy and fidelity per site, we think that the quantum phase transition in this model should belong to the second-order category. Furthermore, in the magnon existence region (h < 2.0), a logarithmically divergent behavior of block entanglement which can be described by a free bosonic field theory is observed, and the central charge c is determined to be 1.

Abstract:We report thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements of the triangular-lattice quantum Ising magnet TmMgGaO4 in longitudinal magnetic fields. Our experiments reveal a quasi-plateau state induced by quantum fluctuations. This state exhibits an unconventional non-monotonic field and temperature dependence of the magnetic order and excitation gap. In the high field regime where the quantum fluctuations are largely suppressed, we observed a disordered state with coherent magnon-like excitations despite the suppression of the spin excitation intensity. Through detailed semi-classical calculations, we are able to understand these behaviors quantitatively from the subtle competition between quantum fluctuations and frustrated Ising interactions.

Abstract:The application of a magnetic field transverse to the easy axis, Ising direction in the quasi-two-dimensional Kagome staircase magnet, Co3V2O8, induces three quantum phase transitions at low temperatures, ultimately producing a novel high field polarized state, with two distinct sublattices. New time-of-flight neutron scattering techniques, accompanied by large angular access, high magnetic field infrastructure allow the mapping of a sequence of ferromagnetic and incommensurate phases and their accompanying spin excitations. At least one of the transitions to incommensurate phases at \mu 0Hc1~6.25 T and \mu 0Hc2~7 T is discontinuous, while the final quantum critical point at \mu 0Hc3~13 T is continuous.

Abstract:Using the nonequilibrium Hubbard operator Green's function technique, we study the inelastic low-temperature quantum transport through an artificial single-molecule magnet coupled to a single phonon mode. For a minimal model based on CdTe quantum dot doped with a single Mn2+ ion (S=5/2), the calculated results show that in the presence of hole–phonon coupling, in addition to main Kondo-like peaks associated with (2S+1) sublevels of spin pair states, satellite Kondo-like peaks originating from emitting phonons appear in the local density of states and differential conductance. Moreover, the number of these phonon-induced Kondo-like peaks depends on the parity of the local large spin, i.e., S=integer or half-integer. It is expected that the intrinsic properties of artificial single-molecule magnets can be obtained by detecting these transport characteristics.

Abstract:MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, a two-dimensional magnetic topological insulator with a uniaxial antiferromagnetic structure, is an ideal platform to realize quantum anomalous Hall effect. However, the strength of magnetic interactions is not clear yet. We performed systematic studies on the magnetization and angle dependent magnetotransport of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ single crystal. The results show that the direction of the magnetic field has significant effects on the critical field values and magnetic structure of this compound, which leads to different magnetotransport behaviors. The field-driven reorientation transitions can be utilized to estimate the AFM interlayer exchange interaction coupling and uniaxial magnetic anisotropy D. The obtained Hamiltonian can well explain the experimental data by Monte Carlo simulations. Our comprehensive studies on the field-driven magnetic transitions phenomenon in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ provide a general approach for other topological systems with antiferromagnetism.

Abstract:The study of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ sits at the confluence of simplicity and complexity: on one hand, the model for Ising chains -- the building blocks of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ -- in a transverse field, can be exactly solved and, thus, serves as an archetype of quantum criticality; on the other hand, the weak but nonzero interchain coupling adds geometric frustration to the stage, substantially complicating the phase diagram. Here we utilize low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements to study the low-lying magnetic excitations in CoNb$_2$O$_6$ and its spin-1 analogue NiNb$_2$O$_6$. The thermal conductivity is found to be suppressed around the quantum critical point, where the specific heat is enhanced due to gapless magnetic excitations, pointing to the localized nature of the latter. These results highlight the predominant role of frustration in determining the quantum critical magnetic excitations of spin chains, which may furthermore underlie the remarkable similarities between the phenomenology of these spin-1/2 and spin-1 systems.

Abstract:: The tunneling behaviors of the magnetization vector are studied in ferromagnetic systems with trigonal and hexagonal crystal symmetries, respectively. The Euclidean transition amplitudes between the energetically degenerate easy directions are evaluated with the help of the dilute instanton-gas approximation. By using the effective Hamiltonian method, the ground-state tunneling level splittings are clearly shown for each kind of symmetry and are found to depend on the parity of the total spin of the ferromagnetic particle. The effective Hamiltonian method is demonstrated to be equivalent to the dilute instanton-gas approximation. Possible relevance to experiments is discussed.

Abstract:We investigate the magnetic quantum phase-transitions in bulk correlated metals at the level of dynamical mean-field theory. To this end, we focus on the Hubbard model on a simple cubic lattice as a function of temperature and electronic density, determining the different regimes of its magnetic transition - classical, quantum critical, and quantum disordered - as well as the corresponding critical exponents. Our numerical results, together with supporting mean-field derivations, demonstrate how the presence of Kohn-anomalies on the underlying Fermi surface does not only drive the quantum critical behavior above the quantum critical point, but shapes the whole phase diagram around it. Finally, after outlining the impact of different Fermi surface geometries on quantum criticality, we discuss to what extent spatial correlations beyond dynamical mean-field might modify our findings.

Abstract:Quantum critical phenomena are widely studied across various materials families, from high temperature superconductors to magnetic insulators. They occur when a thermodynamic phase transition is suppressed to zero temperature as a function of some tuning parameter such as pressure or magnetic field. This generally yields a point of instability - a so-called quantum critical point - at which the phase transition is driven exclusively by quantum mechanical fluctuations. Here we show that the heavy fermion metamagnet UTe$_2$ possesses a quantum phase transition at extreme magnetic field strengths of over 70 T. Surprisingly, rather than terminating at one singular point, we find that the phase boundary is sensitive to magnetic field components in each of the three cartesian axes of magnetic field space. This results in the three-dimensional transition surface being bounded by a continuous ring of quantum critical points, the locus of which forms an extended line of quantum criticality - a novel form of quantum critical phase boundary. Within this quantum critical line sits an intensely field-resilient superconducting state in a striking toroidal shape, persisting to fields over 70 T. We model our data by a phenomenological free energy expansion, and show how a three-dimensional quantum critical phase boundary - rather than a more conventional singular point of instability - anchors the remarkable high magnetic field phase landscape of UTe$_2$.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the quantum phase transition from magnetic Bose glass to magnetic Bose-Einstein condensation induced by a magnetic field in NiCl2.4SC(NH2)2 (dichloro-tetrakis-thiourea-Nickel, or DTN), doped with Br (Br-DTN) or site diluted. Quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the quantum phase transition of the model Hamiltonian for Br-DTN, as well as for site-diluted DTN, are consistent with conventional scaling at the quantum critical point and with a critical exponent z verifying the prediction z=d; moreover the correlation length exponent is found to be nu = 0.75(10) and the order parameter exponent to be beta = 0.95(10). We investigate the low-temperature thermodynamics at the quantum critical field of Br-DTN both numerically and experimentally, and extract the power-law behavior of the magnetization and of the specific heat. Our results for the exponents of the power laws, as well as previous results for the scaling of the critical temperature to magnetic ordering with the applied field, are incompatible with the conventional crossover-scaling Ansatz proposed by Fisher et al., [Phys. Rev. B 40, 546 (1989)], but they can all be reconciled within a phenomenological Ansatz in the presence of a dangerously irrelevant operator.

Abstract:In multilayered magnetic topological insulator structures, magnetization reversal processes can drive topological phase transitions between quantum anomalous Hall, axion insulator, and normal insulator states. Here we report an examination of the critical behavior of two such transitions: the quantum anomalous Hall to normal insulator (QAH-NI), and quantum anomalous Hall to axion insulator (QAH-AXI) transitions. By introducing a new analysis protocol wherein temperature dependent variations in the magnetic coercivity are accounted for, the critical behavior of the QAH-NI and QAH-AXI transitions are evaluated over a wide range of temperature and magnetic field. Despite the uniqueness of these different transitions, quantized longitudinal resistance and Hall conductance are observed at criticality in both cases. Furthermore, critical exponents were extracted for QAH-AXI transitions occurring at magnetization reversals of two different magnetic layers. The observation of consistent critical exponents and resistances in each case, independent of the magnetic layer details, demonstrates critical behaviors in quantum anomalous Hall transitions to be of electronic rather than magnetic origin. Our finding offers a new avenue for studies of phase transition and criticality in QAH insulators.

Abstract:The suppression of ferroquadrupolar order in TmVO 4 in a magnetic field is well-described by the transverse field Ising model, enabling detailed studies of critical dynamics near the quantum phase transition. We describe nuclear magnetic resonance measurements in pure and Y-doped single crystals. The non-Kramers nature of the ground state doublet leads to a unique form of the hyperfine coupling that exclusively probes the transverse field susceptibility. Our results show that this quantity diverges at the critical field, in contrast to the mean-field prediction. Furthermore, we find evidence for quantum critical fluctuations present near Tm-rich regions in Y-doped crystals at levels beyond which long-range order is suppressed, suggesting the presence of quantum Griffiths phases.

Abstract:Phase transitions in condensed matter are a source of exotic emergent properties. We study the fully frustrated bilayer Heisenberg antiferromagnet to demonstrate that an applied magnetic field creates a previously unknown emergent criticality. The quantum phase diagram contains four states with distinctly different symmetries, all but one pair separated by first-order transitions. We show by quantum Monte Carlo simulations that the thermal phase diagram is dominated by a wall of discontinuities extending between the dimer-triplet phases and the singlet-containing phases. This wall is terminated at finite temperatures by a critical line, which becomes multicritical where the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition of the dimer-triplet antiferromagnet and the thermal Ising transition of the singlet-triplet crystal phase also terminate. The combination of merging symmetries leads to a 4-state Potts universality not contained in the microscopic Hamiltonian, which we interpret within the Ashkin-Teller model. Our results represent a systematic step in understanding emergent phenomena in quantum magnetic materials, including the "Shastry-Sutherland compound" SrCu 2 (BO 3 ) 2 .
