Abstract:The processes of single-electron charge exchange, excitation, and ionization during proton impact on H(2l) are investigated. We employ two different theoretical methods that are suitable for different collision energy regions: the full quantum-mechanical molecular orbital close-coupling method for energies from 0.001 to 1 keV u −1 and the two-center atomic orbital close-coupling (TC-AOCC) method for energies between 0.3 and 100 keV u −1 . For charge exchange and excitation processes, the total and nl-resolved cross sections to the final reaction channels of H (nl, n = 1–4) have been obtained over a broad energy region. Moreover, the ionization cross sections in the TC-AOCC calculation are also reported for both H(2s) and H(2p) initial target states. The present results are all compared with those from other sources when available. It is found that the magnitude and energy behavior of nl-resolved excitation cross sections for H + –H(2p) collisions are significantly distinct from those of the H(2s) initial state in the entire energy range considered, particularly in the low-energy region. The energy behaviors of the nl-resolved charge exchange cross sections from the H(2p) initial state are similar to those from the H(2s) initial state, but their magnitudes are larger. The present accurate cross-section data are anticipated to provide insight into the research of astrophysics and controlled fusion plasmas.

Abstract:The single electron capture cross sections for 5-30keV Ho+, La+ and Ce+ impact on H2 at a fixed anode voltage of an ion source and 10keV Ho+ impact on H2 at different anode voltage have been measured by the “growth rate method”. We found that the variation of the hollow cathode ion source’s anode voltage affected the proportion of the metastable states of the rare earth ions, and the proportion accounts for the significant change of single capture cross sections.

Abstract:The ionization process due to collision of He2+ with C5+(1s) is investigated using a continuum-distorted-wave eikonal-initial-state approximation. Total, single-, and double-differential cross sections are presented for collision energies from 30 keV/u to 10 MeV/u. A good agreement is obtained between the current total cross section and the previous predictions. The ionization mechanism of electron capture to the projectile continuum (ECC) is found to be important in the lower collision energy range, whose contributions to the total cross section are evaluated to be approximately 12, 9, and 7% for the projectile energies of 125 keV/u,500 keV/u, and 1 MeV/u respectively. These large ECC contributions could be interpreted by the velocity matching between the projectile ion and the electron initially bound to the target.

Abstract:The single-electron-loss cross sections for 6- 30keV B+, C +, N+ and O+ impacting on H2 have been measured, for the first time, using the growth-rate method. The cross sections of B+ and C+ as functions of ion energy in the region of 6 - 30 keV from the present measurements can join smoothly to those in the 100-2500keV region from previous measurements. The variations of the cross sections of B+, C +, N+ and O+ with the center-of-mass energy and nuclear charge of the incident ions are well understood by the molecular-orbital theory.

Abstract:Total and state-selective charge transfer, ionization and stripping cross sections due to the collision of Si2+ ion with atomic hydrogen are investigated using the classical-trajectory Monte-Carlo (CTMC) method in the collision energy from I keV/amu to 10 MeV/amu. Total electron capture rate coefficient is obtained in the temperature range from 10(5) K degrees to 10(8) K degrees. Comparison with the data available shows that our CTMC results are reliable. The behaviors for these cross sections varying with the projectile energy are analyzed. A classical physical picture is presented to explain the reason behind the behaviors.

Abstract:We present ionization cross sections of hydrogen molecules by electron and positron impact for impact energies between 20 and 1000 eV. A three-body Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo approximation is applied to mimic the collision system. In this approach, the H2 molecule is modeled by a hydrogen-type atom with one active electron bound to a central core of effective charge with an effective binding energy. Although this model is crude for describing a hydrogen molecule, we found that the total cross sections for positron impact agree reasonably well with the experimental data. For the electron impact, our calculated cross sections are in good agreement with the experimental data in impact energies between 80 eV and 400 eV but are smaller at higher impact energies and larger at lower impact energies. Our calculated cross sections are compared with the scaled cross sections obtained experimentally for an atomic hydrogen target. We also present single differential cross sections as a function of the energy and angle of the ejected electron and scattered projectiles for a 250 eV impact. These are shown to agree well with available data. Impact parameter distributions are also compared for several impact energies.

Abstract:The semiclassical non-perturbative atomic orbital close-coupling approach has been employed to study the electron capture and excitation processes in He 2+ -H(1s) and He 2+ -H(2s) collision systems. In order to ensure the accuracy of our calculated cross sections, a large number of high excited states and pseudostates are included in the expansion basis sets which centered on target and projectile, respectively. The total and partial charge transfer and excitation cross sections are obtained for a wide-energy domain ranging from 1 to 200 keV/amu. The present calculations are also compared with the results from other theoretical methods. These cross section data is useful for the investigation of astrophysics and laboratory plasma.

Abstract:We calculate electron capture and ionization cross sections of N-2 impacted by the H+ projectile at keV energies. To this end, we employ the time-dependent density-functional theory coupled nonadiabatically to molecular dynamics. To avoid the explicit treatment of the complex density matrix in the calculation of cross sections, we propose an approximate method based on the assumption of constant ionization rate over the period of the projectile passing the absorbing boundary. Our results agree reasonably well with experimental data and semi-empirical results within the measurement uncertainties in the considered energy range. The discrepancies aremainly attributed to the inadequate description of exchange-correlation functional and the crude approximation for constant ionization rate. Although the present approach does not predict the experiments quantitatively for collision energies below 10 keV, it is still helpful to calculate total cross sections of ion-molecule collisions within a certain energy range.

Abstract:We report quadruple differential cross sections for electron-impact ionization of H2 with simultaneous excitation of the + H2 ion which will immediately dissociate. The alignment of the molecule is determined by detecting the emitted proton. The first measurements of this type were recently reported (2013 Phys. Rev. A 88 062705). Here we report measurements with much better angular resolution using the COLTRIMS method. Experimental results are compared with molecular 4-body distorted wave calculations and reasonably good agreement between experiment and theory is found.

Abstract:A combined experimental and theoretical study on single capture in 15-50 keV/uC(4+1) + He collisions was performed. State-selective single-electron capture cross sections and projectile scattering angle distributions were obtained by using a reaction microscope. A comparison of the state-selective cross sections with theoretical calculations based on the two-active-electron semiclassical atomic-orbital close-coupling method showed an excellent agreement for the considered impact energies. For the angular differential cross sections, an overall agreement was also obtained between the present experimental and theoretical results. Simulations performed using an extended Fraunhofer-type diffraction model suggest that the undulatory structures observed at small scattering angles for capture to C3+(1s(2)2s) and C3+(1s(2)2p(0)) can be interpreted as the diffraction pattern of the incident projectile de Broglie wave confined by an aperture defined as the region around the target where the considered capture process is likely. The strong competition between single-electron capture to C3+(1s(2)2p(0)) and C3+(1s(2)2p(1)) is also discussed to interpret the differences observed between their respective differential cross sections.
Measurement of Absolute Single and Double Electron Capture Cross Sections for O6+ Ion Collisions with CO2, CH4, H2, and N2

Abstract:The absolute electron capture cross sections for single and double charge exchanges (CEs) between the highly charged ion O6+ and CO2, CH4, H-2, and N-2, the dominant collision processes in the solar wind, have been measured in the energies from 7 keV q (2.63 keV u(-1)) to 52 keV q (19.5 keV u(-1)). These measurements were carried out in the new experimental instrument setup at Fudan University, and the errors of the cross sections for single and double CEs at the 1 sigma confidence level were about 11% and 16%, respectively. Limited agreement is achieved with single electron capture results calculated by the classical overbarrier model. These cross section data are useful for the simulation of ion-neutral processes in astrophysical environments and to improve the present theoretical model of fundamental atomic processes.
Non-perturbative scaling behavior for net ionization of biologically relevant molecules by multiply-charged heavy-ion impact

Abstract:A recently developed model to describe proton collisions from molecules involving basic atoms such as hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and phosphorus (H, C, N, O, P) is extended to treat collisions with multiply charged ions. The ion-atom collisions are computed using the two-center basis generator method (TC-BGM), which has a proven track record of yielding accurate total cross sections for electron capture and ionization. The atomic net ionization cross sections are then used to assemble two models for ion-molecule collisions: an independent atom model (IAM) that follows the Bragg additivity rule (labeled IAM-AR), and also the so-called pixel-counting method (IAM-PCM). The latter yields reduced cross sections relative to IAM-AR near the maximum, since it takes into account the overlapping nature of effective cross sectional areas. The IAM-PCM for higher-charge projectiles leads to strong reductions of net ionization cross sections relative to the IAM-AR method, and is computed directly for projectile charges $Q=1, 2, 3$. The scaling behavior of the IAM-PCM is investigated over a wide range of energies $E$, and at high $E$ it converges towards the IAM-AR. An empirical scaling rule is established which allows to reproduce these results based on proton impact calculations. Detailed comparisons are provided for the uracil target ($\rm C_4 H_4 N_2 O_2$), for which other theoretical as well as experimental results are available. Based on the scaling model derived from the IAM-PCM data it is shown how the experimental data for uracil and water bombarded by multiply charged ions can be reduced to effective $Q=1$ cross sections respectively, and these are compared to proton impact data.

Abstract:Research on electron capture (EC) process are undoubtedly helpful for maturing theoretical models on ion-induced collision especially for low-energy region. In this work, a two-active-electron semiclassical asymptotic-state close-coupling method was used to calculate the total and l-solved state-selective single EC cross sections of O6+ + He collisions in the energy range of 0.3-100 keV u(-1), accompanied with experimental measurements in the energy range of 2.63-37.5 keV u(-1) with an uncertainty of 11% in good agreement. Above 4.5 keV u(-1), the state-selective cross section of n = 5 was reported experimentally for the first time. Calculations with multiple theoretical methods were gathered and compared with present calculations. The importance of two-active-electrons correlation and large basis sets in theoretical calculations was found, and discrepancies between previous theoretical and experimental results can be explained by the present results.

Abstract:Updating and extending previous work (Krstić and Schultz 1999 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 32 3458 and other references) comprehensive calculations were performed for elastic scattering and charge transfer in proton—atomic hydrogen collisions. The results, obtained for 1301 collision energies in the center-of-mass energy range of 10−4–104 eV, are provided for integral and differential cross sections relevant to transport modeling in astrophysical and other plasma environments, and are made available through a website. Use of the data is demonstrated through a Monte Carlo transport simulation of solar wind proton propagation through atomic hydrogen gas representing a simple model of the solar wind interaction with heliospheric neutrals.

Proton-${}^3$H scattering calculation: Elastic and charge-exchange reactions up to 30 MeV

Abstract:Proton-${}^3$H elastic scattering and charge-exchange reaction ${}^3$H$(p,n){}^3$He in the energy regime above four-nucleon breakup threshold are described in the momentum-space transition operator framework. Fully converged results are obtained using realistic two-nucleon potentials and two-proton Coulomb force as dynamic input. Differential cross section, proton analyzing power, outgoing neutron polarization, and proton-to-neutron polarization transfer coefficients are calculated between 6 and 30 MeV proton beam energy. Good agreement with the experimental data is found for the differential cross section both in elastic and charge-exchange reactions; the latter shows a complicated energy and angular dependence. The most sizable discrepancies between predictions and data are found for the proton analyzing power and outgoing neutron polarization in the charge-exchange reaction, while the respective proton-to-neutron polarization transfer coefficients are well described by the calculations.

Abstract:The three-body boundary-corrected continuum intermediate state method is used to compute total cross sections for single charge exchange in ion-atom collisions at intermediate and high impact energies. Detailed illustrations are given for several scattering systems: HLi, He2Li, HC, He2C, HN, HO and HNe, He2Ne. An independent particle model and the frozen-core approximation are employed with only one target electron taken as being active. The initial ground state of the active electron in a multi-electron target is described by five wave functions. These are two Roothaan-Hartree-Fock (RHF) wave functions, the single- as well as double-zeta functions and the hydrogen-like functions. Comparisons among the resulting cross sections are made to check their sensitivity to the choice of the initial target wave functions. In the case of a lithium target, the separate cross sections for electron capture from the K-shell and L-shell are reported. The present theoretical total cross sections are compared with the available experimental data and overall good agreement is found, especially when using the RHF wave functions for multi-electron targets.

Abstract:Net ionization and net capture cross-section calculations are presented for proton collisions from methane molecules and the DNA/RNA nucleobases adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine, and uracil. We use the recently introduced independent-atom-model pixel counting method to calculate these cross sections in the 10 keV to 10 MeV impact energy range and compare them with results obtained from the simpler additivity rule, a previously used complete-neglect-of-differential-overlap method, and with experimental data and previous calculations where available. It is found that all theoretical results agree reasonably well at high energies, but deviate significantly in the low-to-intermediate energy range. In particular, the pixel counting method which takes the geometrical overlap of atomic cross sections into account is the only calculation that is able to describe the measurements for capture in proton-methane collisions down to 10 keV impact energy. For the nucleobases it also yields a significantly smaller cross section in this region than the other models. New measurements are urgently required to test this prediction.

Abstract:We use the recently introduced independent-atom-model pixel counting method to calculate proton-impact net ionization cross sections for a large class of biologically relevant systems including pyrimidines, purines, amino acids, and nucleotides from 10 keV to 10 MeV impact energy. Overall good agreement with experimental data, where available, is found. A scaling prescription that involves coefficients derived from the independent atom model is shown to represent the cross section results better than scalings based on the number of (bonding) valence electrons of the target molecules. It is shown that the scaled net ionization cross sections of the proton-nucleotide collision systems can be represented in terms of a simple analytical formula with four parameters to within 3% accuracy.

Abstract:The system and the method of the Ag - and He collision experiment are described, and the distinguishing feature of this experiment system is that only one detector was used. The single-electron detachment cross-sections of Ag - in collision with He has been measured in the energy range of 5～30 keV by the growth-rate method. The typical value of the cross section of Ag - impacting on He at 20keV is 6.6×10 -16 cm 2. The experimental uncertainty of the results is about ±8% in this work.
