Abstract:In this paper, we obtain several results on the commensurability of two Kleinian groups and their limit sets. We prove that two finitely generated subgroups G(1) and G(2) of an infinite co-volume Kleinian group G subset of Isom(H(3)) having Lambda(G(1)) = Lambda(G(2)) are commensurable. In particular, we prove that any finitely generated subgroup H of a Kleinian group G subset of Isom(H(3)) with Lambda(H) = Lambda(G) is of finite index if and only if H is not a virtually fibered subgroup.

Abstract:Classical Kleinian groups are discrete subgroups of $PSL(2,\C)$ acting on the complex projective line $¶^1$, which actually coincides with the Riemann sphere, with non-empty region of discontinuity. These can also be regarded as the monodromy groups of certain differential equations. These groups have played a major role in many aspects of mathematics for decades, and also in physics. It is thus natural to study discrete subgroups of the projective group $PSL(n,\C)$, $ n > 2$. Surprisingly, this is a branch of mathematics which is in its childhood, and in this article we give an overview of it.

Abstract:We review the relationship between discrete groups of symmetries of Euclidean three-space, constructions in algebraic geometry around Kleinian singularities including versions of Hilbert and Quot schemes, and their relationship to finite-dimensional and affine Lie algebras via the McKay correspondence. We focus on combinatorial aspects, such as the enumeration of certain types of partition-like objects, reviewing in particular a recently developed root-of-unity-substitution calculus. While the most complete results are in type A, we also develop aspects of the theory in type D, and end with some questions about the exceptional type E cases.

On Geometric Convergence of Discrete Groups

Abstract:One of the basic questions in the Kleinian group theory is to understand both algebraic and geometric limiting behavior of sequences of discrete subgroups. In this paper we consider the geometric convergence in the setting of the isometric group of the real or complex hyperbolic space. It is known that if Γ is a non-elementary finitely generated group and ϱ i : Γ → SO( n , 1) a sequence of discrete and faithful representations, then the geometric limit of ϱ i (Γ) is a discrete subgroup of SO( n , 1). We generalize this result by showing that for a sequence of discrete and non-elementary subgroups { G j } of SO( n , 1) or PU( n , 1), if { G j } has uniformly bounded torsion, then its geometric limit is either elementary, or discrete and non-elementary.

Abstract:Let $\xi$ be a $\tau$-invariant contact structure on $N(W) = \mathbb{R}_{\tau} \times W$ for a closed, $2n$-dimensional manifold $W$, so that each $\{\tau\} \times W$ is a convex hypersurface. When $n=1$, Giroux's criterion provides a simple means of determining exactly when $\xi$ is tight. It is an open problem to find a generalization applicable for $n>1$. This article solves an algebraic version of the problem, determining exactly when $(N(W), \xi)$ has non-vanishing contact homology ($CH$) and computing $CH(N(W), \xi)$ when it is non-zero. The result can be expressed in terms of homotopy equivalence of augmentations of the chain level $CH$ algebra of the dividing set or in terms of bilinearized homology theories, which we define for free, commutative DGAs over $\mathbb{Q}$. Our proof relies on the development of obstruction bundle gluing in the Kuranishi setting.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{G}$ be a compact Hausdorff group acting on a compact Hausdorff space $X$, $\alpha$ an irreducible $\mathbb{G}$-representation, and $C(X)$ the $C^*$-algebra of complex-valued continuous functions on $X$. We prove that the isotypic component $C(X)_{\alpha}$ is finitely generated as a module over the invariant subalgebra $C(X/\mathbb{G})\subseteq C(X)$ precisely when the map sending $x\in X$ to the dimension of the space of vectors in $\alpha$ invariant under the isotropy group $\mathbb{G}_x$ is locally constant. This (a) specializes back to an observation of De Commer-Yamashita equating the finite generation of all $C(X)_{\alpha}$ with the Vietoris continuity of $x\mapsto \mathbb{G}_x$, and (b) recovers and extends Watatani's examples of infinite-index expectations resulting from non-free finite-group actions.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a split reductive group over a finite field $k$. In this note we study the space $V$ of finitely supported functions on the set of isomorphism classes $G$-bundles on the projective line ${\mathbb P}^1$ endowed with a trivialization at $0$ and $\infty$. We show that $V$ is naturally isomorphic to the regular bimodule over the Hecke algebra $A$ of the group $G(k((t)))$ with respect to the first congruence subgroup. As a byproduct we show that Hecke operators at points different from $0$ and $\infty$ to generate the "stable center" of $A$. We provide an expression of the character of the lifting of an irreducible cuspidal representation of $GL(N,k)$ to $GL(N,k')$ where $k'$ is a finite extension of $k$ in terms of these generators. In a subsequent publication we plan to develop analogous constructions in the case when $k$ is replaced by a local non-archimedian field.

Abstract:We solve the long standing problem of classification of standard compact Clifford-Klein forms of homogeneous spaces of simple non-compact real Lie groups. The result is that standard compact Clifford-Klein forms always arise from triples $(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h},\mathfrak{l})$ of real Lie algebras such that $\mathfrak{h}\subset\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{l}\subset\mathfrak{g}$, $\mathfrak{g}$ is simple and absolutely simple, $\mathfrak{h},\mathfrak{l}$ are (non-compact) reductive, $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{h}+\mathfrak{l}$, and the intersection $\mathfrak{h}\cap\mathfrak{l}$ is compact. The consequence of this is the following characterization of proper co-compact actions of reductive Lie subgroups $L\subset G$ on a homogeneous spaces $G/H$ determined by absolutely simple real Lie group $G$ and a closed reductive subgroup $H$: $L$ acts on $G/H$ properly and co-compactly if and only if $G=H\cdot L$ and $H\cap L$ is compact

Abstract:The isomorphism problem is a fundamental problem for algebraic and combinatorial structures, particularly in relation to Cayley graphs. Let X i = GC ( G , S i , α i ) , ( i = 1 , 2 ) be generalized Cayley graphs. If whenever X 1 ≅ X 2, it implies that α 2 = α 1 γ and S 2 = g − 1 S 1 γ g α 2 for some g ∈ G and γ ∈ Aut ( G ), then G is a strongly generalized Cayley isomorphism (GCI)-group. In this study, we defined (strongly, restricted) m -GCI-groups. These definitions are similar to those of m -CI-groups for Cayley graphs. Our main results demonstrate that a finite non-abelian simple group G is a restricted 2-GCI-group if and only if G is one of A 5, L 2 ( 8 ), M 11, S z ( 8 ), or M 23, and G is a 2-GCI-group if and only if G is A 5 or L 2 ( 8 ).
Counting Rational Curves and Standard Complex Structures on HyperKähler ALE 4-manifolds

Abstract:All hyperKähler ALE 4-manifolds with a given non-trivial finite group $\Gamma$ in $SU(2)$ at infinity are parameterized by an open dense subset of a real linear space of dimension $3$rank$\Phi$. Here, $\Phi$ denotes the root system associated with $\Gamma$ via the McKay correspondence. Such manifolds are diffeomorphic to the minimal resolution of a Kleinian singularity. By using the period map of the twistor space, we specify those points in the parameter space at which the hyperKählerian family of complex structures includes the complex structure of the minimal resolution. Furthermore, we count the rational curves lying on each hyperKähler ALE 4-manifold. As an application, we prove that the twistor space of any hyperKähler ALE cannot be Kählerian. In particular, we strengthen some results of Kronheimer (J. Differential Geom., 29(3):665--683, 1989) and provide examples of non-compact and non-Kählerian twistor spaces.

Abstract:Groupoids provide a more appropriate framework for differential geometry than principal bundles. Synthetic differential geometry is the avant-garde branch of differential geometry, in which nilpotent infinitesimals are available in abundance. The principal objective in this paper is to show within our favorite framework of synthetic differential geometry that the tangent space of the group of bisections of a microlinear groupoid at its identity is naturally a Lie algebra. We give essentially distinct two proofs for its Jacobi identity.

Abstract:It is a major problem in analysis on metric spaces to understand when a metric space is quasisymmetric to a space with strong analytic structure, a so-called Loewner space. A conjecture of Kleiner, recently disproven by Anttila and the second author, proposes a combinatorial sufficient condition. The counterexamples constructed are all topologically one dimensional, and the sufficiency of Kleiner's condition remains open for most other examples. A separate question of Kleiner and Schioppa, apparently unrelated to the problem above, asks about the existence of "analytically $1$-dimensional planes": metric measure spaces quasisymmetric to the Euclidean plane but supporting a $1$-dimensional analytic structure in the sense of Cheeger. In this paper, we construct an example for which the conclusion of Kleiner's conjecture is not known to hold. We show that either this conclusion fails in our example or there exists an "analytically $1$-dimensional plane". Thus, our construction either yields a new counterexample to Kleiner's conjecture, different in kind from those of Anttila and the second author, or a resolution to the problem of Kleiner--Schioppa.

Abstract:A tautological system, introduced in [17, 18], arises as a regular holonomic system of partial differential equations that govern the period integrals of a family of complete intersections in a complex manifold X, equipped with a suitable Lie group action. In this article, we introduce two formulas-one purely algebraic, the other geometric-to compute the rank of the solution sheaf of such a system for CY hypersurfaces in a generalized flag variety. The algebraic version gives the local solution space as a Lie algebra homology group, while the geometric one as the middle de Rham cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane section in X. We use both formulas to find certain degenerate points for which the rank of the solution sheaf becomes 1. These rank 1 points appear to be good candidates for the so-called large complex structure limits in mirror symmetry. The formulas are also used to prove a conjecture of Hosono, Lian, and Yau, on the completeness of the extended GKZ system when X is P-n [12].

Abstract:Bernstein-Schwarzman conjectured that the quotient of a complex affine space by an irreducible complex crystallographic group generated by reflections is a weighted projective space. The conjecture was proved by Schwarzman and Tokunaga-Yoshida in dimension 2 for almost all such groups, and for all crystallographic reflection groups of Coxeter type by Looijenga, Bernstein-Schwarzman and Kac-Peterson in any dimension. We prove that the conjecture is true for the crystallographic reflection group in dimension 3 for which the associated collineation group is Klein's simple group of order 168. In this case the quotient is the 3-dimensional weighted projective space with weights 1, 2, 4, 7. The main ingredient in the proof is the computation of the algebra of invariant theta functions. Unlike the Coxeter case, the invariant algebra is not free polynomial, and this was the major stumbling block.
