Abstract:The vibrations of vehicle-track-saturated ground coupling system subjected to moving train loads are investigated by a semi-analytical approach.The theoretical model is divided into three components: the vehicle is described as a multi-rigid-body system,and a linear Hertizian contact spring between each wheel and the rail is used to simulate the dynamic wheel-rail interaction forces;a periodically supported Euler beam is introduced to simulate the track system;a fully saturated poroelastic half-space is used to simulate the ground and governed by Biot's theory.Train loads include two parts: the axle loads and the dynamic wheel-rail loads assumed to be generated from the track irregularity.The governing equations of each component are solved by using Fourier transform,and these components of the whole system are integrated to meet the displacement compatibility and force equilibrium by the substructure method.The time domain responses of the ground are obtained through the fast Fourier transform.On the basis of the analysis of the dynamic wheel-rail loads,the dynamic responses of the ground subjected to the axle loads and the dynamic wheel-rail loads are investigated.Influences of the sleeper span and the soil intrinsic permeability on the soil dynamic responses are also analyzed.It is concluded that the dynamic wheel-rail load has important contribution to the far-field ground vibrations,and also the sleeper span has obvious influence on the track and ground vibrations.

Abstract:Computing and analysing the relationship between floating slab track and vibration and noise can offer reference to engineering.Based on the model of wheel and track vibration considering its irregularity,the finite element model was established by ANSYS.Transient response was simulated under the train dynamic loading by means of Newmark time integration.Analysis the different vibration isolator parameter can figure out the effect to vibration and noise.Floating track slab system is an effective anti vibration and noise,there are different effect between stiffness and damping to control vibration and noise.
Ground Vibration Caused by Axle Load and Dynamic Wheel-Rail Force of a Moving Train

Abstract:In order to investigate the train-induced ground vibration more accurately,a vehicle-track-ground coupling model is proposed.The source of vibration excitation is divided into two components: the axle load and the roughness-induced dynamic loads.The vehicle is simulated by a multi-rigid-body system and a Hertizian contact spring is introduced between each wheelset and the rail to consider the dynamic wheel-rail forces.Compatibility of the displacements at wheel-rail contact points yields equations for the dynamic wheel-rail loads.The Biot’s full dynamic poroelastic theory is employed for the saturated half-space,neglecting the body force and the compressibility of solid grain.The governing equations are solved by using the Fourier transform in the transformed domain.The results in time domain are obtained by applying the inverse fast Fourier transform(IFFT).The dynamic wheel-rail force is investigated for various exciting frequencies,and the dynamic response of the poroelastic half-space induced by both the axle load and dynamic load is presented.It is concluded that the dynamic load makes important contribution to train-induced environment vibration and can not be neglected in the engineering practice.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the dynamic characteristics of wheel–rail collision vibration for high-speed train under crosswind. The wind load model is established by using fast Fourier transform harmonic synthesis method and Davenport coherence function, the lateral displacement of wheelset of high-speed train under crosswind is calculated, the dynamic model of wheel–rail collision vibration system of high-speed train under crosswind is established. The effects of vibration frequency, wheel–rail clearance and lateral damping on the characteristics of wheel–rail lateral clearance impact vibration system of high-speed train are discussed. Numerical simulation results show that the impact velocity of wheelset collision on left and right rails increases with the increase of vibration frequency. When ω > 3.3, the system changes from chaos state to single period stable state through inverse doubling bifurcation; when b < 0.0033, it is in a chaos state, and with the increase of b , the inverse doubling bifurcation occurs until the hunting motion of the wheel–rail system is in a stable state; when ζ≤0.1 , the system is in a stable single period operation state, and with the continuous increase of ζ , it begins to have hop bifurcation, enters a multi-period and chaos state, and finally it is in a stable single period operation state.

Abstract:Considering not only the stochastic track irregularity and the possible effect of stochastic parameter excitation, but also the time delay of spring, that is, its response is in place, but the force generated is not in place, a stochastic delay wheelset system is established. The infinite dimensional system is reduced to the finite dimensional stochastic differential equation by using the center manifold, and further reduced to a one-dimensional diffusion process by using the stochastic averaging method. The stability of the wheelset system is obtained by analyzing the singular boundary theory and calculating the maximum Lyapunov exponent. The conditions and types of stochastic bifurcation in wheelset system are obtained by combining probability density function. The numerical simulation verifies the correctness of the theoretical analysis and shows that the time delay affects the critical hunting instability speed of wheelset. The stochastic term affects the lateral displacement of the stochastic delay wheelset system.

Abstract:A two-degree-of-freedom nonlinear high-speed railway wheelset model with two time delays in the lateral and yaw dampers is studied. The aim is to investigate the effect of time delays on stability and Hopf bifurcation characteristics of the wheelset model. The local stability of the trivial equilibrium under different time delay conditions is qualitatively analyzed. Analytical studies reveal that the wheelset model undergoes stability switches with the variation of the time delays. The stability switches correspond to Hopf bifurcations that occur when the time delays cross critical values. Furthermore, properties of Hopf bifurcation including direction and stability of bifurcating limit cycles are studied by using the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem. Our findings indicate that time delays in both lateral dampers and yaw dampers influence the stability and direction of Hopf bifurcation. Additionally, the numerical results show that time delays in the lateral and yaw dampers not only affect the amplitude of the hunting motion of the wheelset but also the periodic and chaotic motions. If the time delays gradually increase, the wheelset will vibrate irregularly with large lateral displacements. The analytical results presented in this paper offer a theoretical reference for the stability design of wheelsets.

Abstract:A rotating flexible wheelset model is developed and integrated into a vehicle/track dynamic model. Flexible wheelset modes with natural frequencies less than 1000 Hz are considered in the wheelset modelling. An innovation of the paper is that wheel/rail rolling contact calculation considers the effect of the wheelset flexibility and the rotating effect. By introducing two half dummy rigid wheelsets the rolling contact between the flexible wheelset and the two rails can be transformed to that between a rigid wheelset and the rails. As an extension application, the wheel OOR (Out-Of-Round) wears with the 11th, 15th, and 17th orders are used to the vehicle system dynamic model with rigid, flexible and rotating-flexible wheelset model. The results of the three models are compared to study the influence of wheelset flexibility and rotation. The ‘online searching contact method’ developed in this paper is compared with the traditional contact method with considering the rotating flexible wheelset. And then a measured OOR is used to excite the rotating flexible wheelset, the response of which is analysed and verified.

Abstract:The wheel-rail contact asymmetry on the left and right sides of the wheelset while navigating high-speed vehicles through turnouts can lead to lateral motion of the wheelset, ultimately resulting in substantial vibrations in the vehicle system. This study employs the trace method to examine the changing pattern of the wheel-rail equivalent conicity in the turnout area as the wheel profile evolves. A coupled system dynamics model containing flexible turnouts is established. Specifically, the model examines the lateral position of wheel-rail contact points, the lateral motion of the wheelset, and the lateral vibration acceleration of the vehicle system. The study indicates that the lateral motion characteristics of high-speed trains passing through turnouts are influenced by the degree of wheel wear. When the wheels are slightly worn (for mileage below or equal to 100,000 km), the lateral dynamic responses of the vehicle system are affected by the inherent structure of the turnout. When the wheels are severely worn (for mileage above or equal to 150,000 km), the lateral dynamic response of the vehicle system is no longer affected by the inherent structure of the turnout.

Abstract:The critical speed and hunting frequency are two basic research objects of vehicle system dynamics and have a significant influence on the dynamic performance. A lateral dynamic model with 17 degrees of freedom was established in this study to investigate the critical speed and hunting frequency of a high-speed railway vehicle. The nonlinearities of wheel/rail contact geometry, creep forces, and yaw damper were all considered. A heuristic nonlinear creep model was employed to estimate the contact force between the wheel and the rail. The Maxwell model, which covers the influence of the stiffness characteristic, is used to simulate the yaw damper. To reflect the blow-off of the yaw damper, the damping coefficient is described by stages. Based on the mathematical model, the combined effects of vehicle parameters on the critical speed in the straight line and hunting frequency of the wheelset were investigated innovatively. The novel phenomenon that the hunting frequency exhibits a sudden increase from a smaller value to a larger value when the blow-off of the yaw damper occurs was discovered during the calculations. The extents to which various parameters affect the critical speed and hunting frequency are clear on the basis of the numerical results. Moreover, all of the parameter values were divided into three sections to determine the sensitive range for the critical speed and hunting frequency. The results show that the first section of values plays the decisive role on both the critical speed and the hunting frequency for all parameters analyzed. The investigation in this paper enriches the study of hunting stability and gives some ideas to probably solve the abnormal vibrations during the actual operation.

Abstract:Based on the structural characteristics of the CRTS II ballastless track-bridge system,a new model of vehicle-track-bridge coupling vibration is presented.The system is firstly separated into driven wheel element and a single"four layer beam"element.Then the vertical vibration equation of the vehicle-ballastless track-bridge time-dependent system is established by means of finite element method and Lagrange equation.The proposed model has advantages of convenience for programming and high efficiency for computing.The vertical displacements are obtained by assuming the pure smooth rail.The comparison between the result and reference shows the correctness and feasibility of the new model.As an application,the vibration characteristics of the track bridge structure are calculated under random irregular conditions.

Abstract:Track irregularity is the main source of vibration excitation of vehicle-track weighing system, which has an important impact on the safety, stability and comfort of train operation, and it is also the main factor limiting the speed of train operation. Higher requirements are put forward for track smoothness with the rapid development of China’s railways. Therefore, it has a great theoretical and practical significance to study the relationship between track irregularity and random vibration of vehicle-track cooker-in system and the evaluation method of track smoothness. In this paper, a model construction method is proposed based on machine learning fuzzy logic control and neural network algorithm to analyze the high frequency dynamic characteristics of ballastless track wheel-rail vehicle system. Firstly, a numerical analysis model of high frequency dynamic characteristics of ballastless track wheel-rail vehicle system is established by using linear discrete elastic-yellow damper element connection model; Secondly, the Rough Set Block Neural Network is introduced to optimize the dynamic characteristic analysis model, and the intelligent model of model optimization analysis is established. Finally, the validity of the proposed algorithm is verified by simulation experiments of practical examples.

Abstract:The wheel polygonal wear on high-speed railway exhibits constant high frequency excitation, which results in strong vibrations/noise and deteriorate railway systems. To get insight into the wheel polygonal wear mechanism, a refined vibration model of ballastless track comprising an improved fastener model and track-bed broadband modal model is proposed, and further its coupled dynamic model with the vehicle is established. The simulation scheme of wheel polygonal wear initiation and a wheel out-of-roundness growth rate index are proposed to measure the growth degree of wheel polygon at each order. The relevance between the wheel polygonal wear and wheel-rail coupled resonances is studied, and the time-varying characteristics of wheel-rail coupled vibration modes in a vehicle-discrete supporting track system are firstly clarified. On this basis, the initiation mechanism of wheel polygonal wear is revealed. The results suggest that the rail 3rd-order bending resonance between bogie wheels contribute significantly to wheel polygonal wear, which is attributed to the time-invariant modal shape of this rail 3rd-order bending vibration as well as the natural frequency consistent with the actual polygonal wear excitation. The effects of the fastener model/parameters and track-bed broadband vibrations on wheel polygonal wear are analyzed. The results show that the improved fastener model eliminates the error between the rail 3rd-bending modal frequency obtained based on the simple model and actual polygonal wear frequency. In addition, increasing the fastener damping and iron chair mass can significantly suppress wheel polygonal wear. Finally, the slight contribution of track-bed broadband vibrations to wheel polygonal wear is confirmed.

Abstract:The vibration characteristics of a wheelset-gearbox-bogie frame system are studied under wheel-roller roughness and varying track irregularities utilizing a full-scale rolling test rig. A corresponding dynamic model is developed based on the discrete time transfer matrix method, which integrates a modular flexible wheelset model. The results reveal that, (1) low-frequency vibrations (0–50 Hz): dominated by track irregularities below 200 km/h but by wheel-roller rotation above 350 km/h; (2) mid-frequency vibrations (50–500 Hz): prominent shock effects appear at discrete frequencies above 350 km/h, related to wheel-roller roughness; (3) high-frequency vibrations (500–1000 Hz): great differences under various irregularities and distinguishing structural natural frequencies becomes difficult. Amplitude contributions at speeds below 200 km/h are mid (57–62%), low (26–32%), and high (11–14%). Above 350 km/h, mid-frequency increases while low-frequency decreases by 15%, respectively. To improve vibration performance at superspeed (e.g., 500 km/h), stricter wheel-rail roughness control becomes imperative.

Abstract:In the long-term operation of metro vehicles, the obvious concave wear of the wheel profile will occur and will lead to poor wheel-rail contact conditions. Consequently, the bogie hunting instability arises and the bogie hunting motion would be excited under certain excitation, leading to the abnormal vibration phenomenon in metro vehicles. This paper presents experimental and numerical research on the bogie hunting motion of metro vehicles induced by wheel concave wear. The features of the abnormal vibration and wheel concave wear of a metro vehicle are revealed through comprehensive field tests. A three-dimensional metro vehicle-track coupled model is established to investigate the mechanism of the bogie hunting motion resulting from the wheel concave wear. The influences of the wheel concave wear and the operating speed of the metro vehicle on the bogie hunting stability are discussed. The results show that the bogie hunting motion resulting from the wheel concave wear is the root cause of the abnormal vibration of the metro vehicle. Re-profiling the wheel profile and reducing the operating speed of the metro vehicle can significantly eliminate the abnormal vibration phenomenon.

Abstract:The vibration performance of a tram vehicle running on the curved track is influenced by the speed of the running vehicle, the geometry of the track, the roughness of the wheel and rail, and environmental characteristics. This paper investigates the random vibration analysis of tram-track interaction on a curved track due to the polygonal wheel and track irregularity by the pseudo excitation method (PEM). The dynamic behaviour of tram-track interaction on a curve is modelled using the finite element method (FEM) and multi-body system (MBS). The field tests were carried out to acquire the rail vibration and deformation response, and also measuring the polygonal wheel wear profile to analyse and validate the dynamic behaviour tram-curved track model. The influence of the polygonal wheel on the vibration of tram-curved track coupled system and the wheel-rail contact responses are investigated by considering the wheelset flexibility. The results are illustrated through comparison between with and without the polygonal wheel in terms of time and frequency domain. The numerical results suggest that the wheelset flexibility under the polygonal wheel wear excitation would aggravate the vibration mode of the rail, car-body and axle-box, and also increase the dynamic wheel-rail contact force and creepage.

Small changes to wheel-rail profiles can have a significant impact on the equivalent conicity and vehicle dynamics. Previous research has focused mostly on worn wheels, however, with little attention to different types of rail profile deviation and their influences on vehicle dynamics. Therefore, the specific objective of this paper is to investigate the individual and combined influences of various rail profiles and multi-parameter couplings on the hunting instability of railway vehicles. This paper first obtains the distribution law of rail profile deviation from a statistical analysis of several rail profiles with long-term measurements. Then, the equivalent conicity of rail profiles that match the studied wheel profiles, gauges and wheelback distances is compared. The dynamic model for the vehicle has been established. Finally, the measured rail profiles and wheel profiles, as well as the combinations of the gauges, wheelback distances, friction coefficients and key suspension characteristics are integrated into the simulation model to analyze the atypical phenomenon of the carbody hunting and the bogie hunting. According to the findings, rail profile deviation has a significant impact on equivalent conicity and the evaluation of vehicle stability when subjected to multi-parameter coupling, particularly for worn wheels. Therefore, strict limits of rail profile deviation have to be considered in track maintenance for vehicles running at speeds of 300 km/h or higher.

Abstract:A resonance pattern at frequencies from around 400 Hz to 1000 Hz has often been observed from measured rail accelerations. Such resonances are important for rail noise and corrugation. Although this pattern has been reported and discussed in several papers in terms of wave reflections between multiple wheels, the aim of this study is to investigate the generation mechanism of this resonance phenomenon in detail, and to give both mathematical and physical insight. An infinite Timoshenko beam with continuous supports is adopted for modeling the track system, and the point and transfer receptances of the rail for a stationary harmonic excitation are explicitly obtained by the residue theorem. A frequency-domain method is then presented to calculate the power spectral densities of the wheel-track coupled system responses to stochastic irregularities with the moving irregularity model. It is found that the multiple peaks can be explained by using the phase closure principle. Moreover, total reflection between the two wheels may occur at around 700 Hz, which results in the highest peak in the response.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the non-linear characteristics and stability of the rolling bearing–axle coupling system under the excitation of the axle/wheel speed of railway freight cars, so as to put forward a rationale for judging the vibration law and running stability of railway freight wagon. Design/methodology/approach Considering the effects of eccentric force of the railway wagon axle, the non-linear resistance of the wagon and non-linear support forces of axle box rolling bearings, a centralized mass model of rolling bearing-axle coupling system of railway freight wagon is presented on the basis of the theory of rotor dynamics and non-linear dynamics. Then the Runge-Kutta method is adopted to solve the non-linear response of the proposed system, and numerical simulation including bifurcation diagrams, axis trajectory curves, phase plane plots, Poincaré sections and amplitude spectras are analysed when the axle rotating speed is changed. Meantime, the relation curve between Floquet multiplier and axle rotating speed, which affects the stability of coupling system, is plotted by numerical method based on the Floquet theory and method. Findings The simulation results of the dynamic model reveal the abundant dynamic behaviour of the coupling system when the axle rotating speed changes, including single period, quasi period, multi-period and chaotic motion, as well as the evolution law from multi-period motion to chaotic motion. And especially, the bearing–axle coupling system is in stable state with a single period motion when the axle rotating speed changes from 410 rpm to 510 rpm, in which the running speed of railway freight wagon is changed from 62 km/h to 80 km/h, the vibration displacement of the coupling system in X direction is between 1.2 mm and 1.8 mm, and the vibration displacement of the coupling system in Y direction is between 1.0 mm and 1.45 mm. Meanwhile, the influence law of axle rotating speed on the stability is obtained by comparing the bifurcation diagram and Floquet multiplier graph of the coupling system. Originality/value The numerical simulation data obtained in this study can provide a theoretical evidence for designing the running speed of railway freight wagon, utilizing or controlling the non-linear dynamic behaviours of the proposed coupling system, and ensuring the stability of railway freight wagons.
Dynamic Modeling, Dynamic Characteristics, and Slight Self-Guidance Ability at High Speeds of Independently Rotating Wheelset for Railway Vehicles

Abstract:For better small-radius curve negotiation performance, the independently rotating wheelset has the potential to be equipped in urban rail transit. As a crucial part of the running gear, its dynamic characteristics directly affect the railway vehicle’s stability and curve negotiation ability. This study follows a model–simulation–experiment method to delve into the dynamic process and steady convergent process of the independently rotating wheelset. An improved mathematical dynamic model of the independently rotating wheelset is established, considering the gravitational restoring forces of the wheelset and different creepages between the left and right wheels. In addition, the gyroscopic effects on the independently rotating wheelset with positive wheel tread conicity and at high speeds are introduced and analyzed. With variations in the longitudinal speed and yaw suspension coefficients, three kinds of motions, derailment, hunting, and offset running, occur on the independently rotating wheelset. We find that the gyroscopic effects contribute to the slight self-guidance ability of the independently rotating wheelset, causing a hunting motion at high speeds. Through sufficient simulations, the improved mathematical dynamic model is verified to be closer to the dynamic model built in the general multibody system simulation software SIMPACK 2018 than the classical mathematical dynamic model. Further, we perform experiments on a scaled independently rotating wheelset experiment system. The dynamic characteristics derived from theoretical analysis, especially the slight self-guidance ability at high speeds, are verified.

Abstract:The wheel-rail dynamic resonance (W-RDR) under multi wheelset-rail nonlinear interactions in the mid-high frequency range is still unclear regarding wheelset flexibility, wave transmissions and reflections (W-TF) among each wheel-rail interaction. To clearly elucidate W-RDR and its induced modes, a double vehicle-track coupled dynamic model of multiple flexible wheelset-rail interactions is established. The validity of the model in the mid-high frequency range is verified by comparing the simulated axlebox acceleration with the measured data. Then, the W-RDR (vertical force, friction power) is calculated and analyzed. Furthermore, the W-RDR under the single/ double/ multiple wheelset-rail interactions is compared and the rail bending modes between bogie wheels are proposed. The influence of wheelset flexibility and W-TF among each wheel-rail interaction on W-RDR are clarified. Finally, the initiation mechanism of rail corrugation is revealed based on corrugation growth rate. The results show that the wheelset flexibility has limited influence on vertical force resonances but significant contribution to friction power resonances. The W-TF between bogie wheels produce three rail local bending modes. The W-TF between wheels of adjacent bogies further intensify response peaks but do not generate new resonances. The W-RDR is mainly caused by the P2 resonance mode, the rail bending modes between bogie wheels and the wheelset bending modes. The rail 3rd-order bending, pinned-pinned resonance between bogie wheels and the wheelset 2nd antisymmetric bending resonance are key factors in corrugation initiation. Moreover, the wheel-rail resonance at the bogie leading wheelset is more prone to produce corrugation than that at the rear wheelset.
