Abstract:Supercapacitor based on charge storage at the interfaces between high surface area carbon nanotubes electrode and LiClO4/PC electrolyte was assembled in this paper. The performance of the capacitor not only depends on the materials but also the construction of the cells. From a constant current charge/discharge test, a capacitance of 600 F was obtained. Evaluation of capacitor performance by different techniques was also discussed. The performance of power capacitors for large power sources is described. Values for the specific energy and specific power of 0.8Wh·kg-1 and 1 kW·kg-1, respectively, are demonstrated for a cell with 2.5V maximum operating voltage. A hybrid power source consisting of lithium ion battery and 60F carbon nanotubes based supercapacitor was demonstrated to power successfully a simulated power load encountered in GSM portable communication equipment. That supercapacitor applied to the power train of a cellular phone results in significantly more energy from the battery being used by the load. The experiments indicate as much as 33.8% energy is utilized by load and less stored energy is dissipated within the battery during each cycle.
