Abstract:We experimentally study quantum Zeno effects in a parity-time (PT) symmetric cold atom gas periodically coupled to a reservoir. Based on the state-of-the-art control of inter-site couplings of atoms in a momentum lattice, we implement a synthetic two-level system with passive PT symmetry over two lattice sites, where an effective dissipation is introduced through repeated couplings to the rest of the lattice. Quantum Zeno (anti-Zeno) effects manifest in our experiment as the overall dissipation of the two-level system becoming suppressed (enhanced) with increasing coupling intensity or frequency. We demonstrate that quantum Zeno regimes exist in the broken PT symmetry phase, and are bounded by exceptional points separating the PT symmetric and PT broken phases, as well as by a discrete set of critical coupling frequencies. Our experiment establishes the connection between PT-symmetry-breaking transitions and quantum Zeno effects, and is extendable to higher dimensions or to interacting regimes, thanks to the flexible control with atoms in a momentum lattice.

Abstract:For the first time, the tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory with pairing correlations has been formulated and implemented in a fully self-consistent and microscopic way to investigate the evolution of the spin axis and the pairing effects in rotating triaxial nuclei. The measured energy spectrum and transition probabilities for the Nd-135 yrast band are reproduced well without any ad hoc renormalization factors when pairing effects are taken into account. A transition from collective to chiral rotation has been demonstrated. It is found that pairing correlations introduce additional admixtures in the single-particle orbitals, and, thus, influence the structure of tilted axis rotating nuclei by reducing the magnitude of the proton and neutron angular momenta while merging their direction.

Abstract:Nuclear pairing gaps of normally deformed and superdeformed nuclei are investigated using the particle-number-conserving (PNC) formalism for the cranked shell model, in which the blocking effects are treated exactly. Both rotational frequency omega dependence and seniority (number of unpaired particles) nu dependence of the pairing gap (Delta) over tilde are investigated. For the ground-state bands of even-even nuclei, PNC calculations show that, in general, (Delta) over tilde decreases with increasing omega, but the omega dependence is much weaker than that calculated by the number-projected Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov approach. For the multiquasiparticle bands (seniority nu > 2), the pairing gaps stay almost omega independent. As a function of the seniority nu, the bandhead pairing gaps (Delta) over tilde(nu, omega = 0) decrease slowly with increasing nu. Even for the highest seniority nu bands identified so far, (Delta) over tilde(nu, omega = 0) remains greater than 70% of (Delta) over tilde(nu = 0, omega = 0).
Systematic Odd-Even Differences in the Moments of Inertia of Superdeformed Bands and Blocking Effect

Abstract:A comprehensive analysis of the superdeformed bands observed near A approximate to 190 indicates that there exist systematic odd-even differences in the moments of inertia similar to that observed in normally deformed nuclei, which can be considered as compelling evidence for pairing and blocking effect in superdeformed nuclei. With increasing rotational frequency the odd-even differences become weaker and weaker due to the Coriolis anti-pairing effects. Particularly, the odd-even differences in the dynamic moments of inertia become obscure when ($) over bar h omega greater than or equal to 0.2 MeV, and in certain cases there emerges nearly identical value of J((2)) for some neighboring nuclei. However, the odd-even differences in the kinematic moments of inertia still remain to certain extent at the highest frequencies.

Abstract:Pairing correlation strongly influences various nuclear properties, including the binding energy, low-lying excited spectrum, and angular momentum alignment of a rotational band etc. The systematically observed large fluctuation in odd-even differences of moments of inertia and their nonadditivity can't be accounted for by the traditional BCS method for treating nuclear pairing correlations, instead, can be explained satisfactorily by the Particle-number conserving method, in which blocking effect is treated strictly.

Abstract:The rotation-induced inhomogeneous problem is nontrivial and inevitable. In this paper a generic framework is developed to investigate the inhomogeneous condensate in a system of fermions under the presence of rotation. It is a self-consistent method based on a set of relativistic Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations solved with typical iteration algorithm. Taking the chiral condensate as an example we study rotational effects numerically and discover two inhomogeneous effects: the local rotational suppression effect and centrifugal effect. They may have significant impact on the phase structure of various kinds of matter. Several systems in different physics branches are discussed in the paper.

When such effects are taken into account, the determination of the pairing interaction strength needs to be modified, resulting in larger pairing gaps. Abstract:Based on the two-sublattice model, the quantum interference effects induced by the topological phase term in the Euclidean action are studied in resonant quantum coherence of the Neel vector between energetically degenerate easy directions in single-domain antiferromagnetic nanoparticles with m-fold rotational symmetries around the z axis and reflection symmetry in the x-y plane at zero magnetic field, where m = 3, 4, and 6, which corresponds to the trigonal, tetragonal, and hexagonal crystal symmetries, respectively. By applying the standard instanton technique in the spin-coherent-state path-integral representation, we evaluate both the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin exponent and the preexponential factors in the instanton's contribution to the tunneling level splitting. The Euclidean transition amplitudes between energetically degenerate easy directions are obtained by making use of the dilute instanton-gas approximation. The effective Hamiltonian approach is applied to give the final results of the ground-state tunneling level splittings for each kind of crystal symmetry. The low-lying tunneling level spectrum and the thermodynamic properties of magnetic tunneling states are found to depend significantly on the parity of the excess spin of single-domain antiferromagnet. The topological quenching of the ground-state tunneling level splitting for the half-integer excess spins obtained previously for the biaxial crystal symmetry (i.e., double-well system at zero magnetic field) can be recovered by a simple diagonalization of the effective Hamiltonian. It is shown that the effective Hamiltonian approach is equivalent to the dilute instanton-gas approximation. Possible relevance to experiments is also discussed. [S0163-1829(99)01229-1].

Abstract:The triaxiality and Coriolis effects on the first fission barrier in even-even nuclei with A = 256 have been studied in terms of the approach of multidimensional total Routhian surface calculations. The present results are compared with available data and other theories, showing a good agreement. Based on the deformation energy or Routhian curves, the first fission barriers are analyzed, focusing on their shapes, heights, and evolution with rotation. It is found that, relative to the effect on the ground-state minimum, the saddle point, at least the first one, can be strongly affected by the triaxial deformation degree of freedom and Coriolis force. The evolution trends of the macroscopic and microscopic (shell and pairing) contributions as well as the triaxial fission barriers are briefly discussed.
Blocking Effect and Underlying Physics of Identical Bands of Normally Deformed-Nuclei at Low-Spin

Abstract:In the particle-number-conserving treatment of the cranked shell model Hamiltonian (blocking effect being taken into account exactly), the calculated even-odd differences in moments of inertia show large variation and depend sensitively on the location and Coriolis response of the blocked levels. The moments of inertia of the Yb-173, Lu-171 [404] 7/2, [402] 5/2, [514] 9/2 and Yb-171 [512] 5/2, [633] 7/2 bands at low spin are calculated and the experimental data are reproduced very well. No free parameter was involved in the calculation. The reason of the discrepancy between the observed ''identical bands'' at low spin and the BCS prediction is discussed.

Abstract:The 1S0 pairing of symmetric nuclear matter is discussed in the framework of relativistic nuclear theory with Dyson–Schwinger equations (DSEs). The in-medium nucleon and meson propagators are treated in a more self-consistent way through meson polarizations. The screening effects on mesons due to in-medium nucleon excitation are found to reduce the 1S0 pairing gap and shift remarkably the gap peak to low density region.

Abstract:We calculate the ground-state properties of fermionic dipolar atoms or molecules in a one-dimensional double-tube potential by using the Luttinger liquid theory and the density matrix renormalization-group calculation. When the external field is applied near a magic angle with respect to the double-tube plane, the long-ranged dipolar interaction can generate a spontaneous correlation between fermions in different tubes, even when the bare intertube tunneling rate is negligibly small. Such interaction-induced correlation strongly enhances the contrast of the interference fringes and therefore can be easily observed in the standard time-of-flight experiment.

Abstract:The microscopic understanding on the influence of the pairing correlations or the superfluidity on the nuclear chiral rotation has been a longstanding and challenging problem. Based on the three-dimensional cranking covariant density functional theory, a shell-model-like approach with exact particle number conservation is implemented to take into account the pairing correlations and applied for the chiral doublet bands built on the configuration πh11/22⊗νh11/2−1 in 135Nd. The data available, including the I−ω relation, as well as the electromagnetic transition probabilities B(M1) and B(E2), are well reproduced. It is found that the superfluidity can reduce the critical frequency and make the chiral rotation easier. The mechanism is that the particle/hole alignments along the short/long axis are reduced by the pairing correlations, resulting in the enhanced preference of the collective rotation along the intermediate axis, and inducing the early appearance of the chiral rotation.
Dipole-Obstructed Cooper Pairing: Theory and Application to $j=3/2$ Superconductors

Abstract:Like electrons, Cooper pairs can carry a monopole charge if the pairing electrons come from two or more Fermi surfaces with different Chern numbers. In such an instance, a superconductor is necessarily nodal due to an inherent topological pairing obstruction. In this work, we show that a similar obstruction is also possible when there is only one Fermi surface involved in the pairing process. By developing a Chern-vorticity theorem, we have identified a class of Fermi surfaces with a quantized dipolar Berry flux pattern, where all intra-Fermi-surface Cooper pairings are ``dipole-obstructed" and nodal. As a real-world application, we find that the dipole obstruction plays a crucial role in stabilizing the superconducting nodal structure for $j=3/2$ half-Heusler compounds.

Abstract:The influence of pairing correlations on the size of the nucleus and the development of nuclear halos is studied in the framework of relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov theory. It turns out that the contributions of weakly bounded orbits in the continuum with low orbital angular momenta l play an essential role. Pairing correlations have a two-fold influence on the density distribution of the neutrons and therefore on the total nuclear size. First, they can change the root-mean-square radius of the individual weakly bound orbits and, second, they can change the occupation probabilities of these orbits in the nuclear system. Both effects are important, and finally the total radius is dominated by their competition.
Dynamical Coulomb Blockade as a Signature of the Sign-Reversing Cooper Pairing Potential

Abstract:Coulomb blockade occurs for electrons tunneling into nanoislands because of the quantization of charge. Here, using spectroscopy measurements of nonmagnetic islands grown on a high-Tc superconductor [one-unit-cell (1-UC) FeSe], we systematically investigate the dynamical Coulomb blockade (DCB), which is found to reflect the Cooper pairing potential in the superconducting substrate. The tunneling spectra are acquired on single-crystalline Pb nanoislands and show a clear suppression of the tunnel current around zero bias-voltage with a gap-like structure. The observed spectral gaps can be attributed to DCB based on our comprehensive investigations, including experiments with finely varying island sizes and calculations of the spectra using the P(E) theory of DCB. Our detailed analysis suggests that the observed DCB can be related to the sign-reversing pairing potential in the 1-UC FeSe substrate below the islands. The sign reversal is furthermore revealed in a transition of the superconducting gap of FeSe from a U- to a V-like lineshape as the distance between neighboring doublet islands is decreased, indicating the presence of a nodal-like gap as expected for a sign-reversing superconductor. Our configuration of nonmagnetic nanoislands on a high-Tc superconductor for spectroscopy measurements may serve as a local, spatially sensitive, and tunable probe for detecting the sign-reversing order parameter in unconventional superconductors.

Novel Pauli blocking method in quantum molecular dynamics type models

Abstract:In this work, we propose a novel method for calculating the occupation probability in the Pauli blocking of the quantum molecular dynamics type models. This method refines the description of the Pauli blocking ratio in the nuclear matter and that in the finite nucleus. The influence of the new Pauli blocking method on the heavy ion collisions observables, such as the charge distribution, the free neutron to proton yield ratios, and the extracted physical quantities, such as the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections, are investigated. For the extracted in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections, our results show that it will be enhanced 1.1$-$2.5 times than that with the conventional Pauli blocking method at the beam energy less than 150 MeV/u, which highlights the importance of a refined Pauli blocking method for developing an advanced transport model to describe complex heavy ion collisions.

Abstract:Low-lying nuclear states of Sm isotopes are studied in the framework of a collective Hamiltonian based on covariant energy density functional theory. Pairing correlations are treated by both BCS and Bogoliubov methods. It is found that the pairing correlations deduced from relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) calculations are generally stronger than those deduced by relativistic mean field plus BCS (RMF + BCS) with the same pairing force. By simply renormalizing the pairing strength, the diagonal part of the pairing field is changed in such a way that the essential effects of the off-diagonal parts of the pairing field neglected in the RMF + BCS calculations can be recovered, and consequently the low-energy structure is in a good agreement with the predictions of the RHB model.
