Abstract:There has always been a desire to develop display systems capable of visualizing information in a realistic and natural manner. The main advantages of volumetric 3D display are the inherent three-dimensionality of the displayed images and the considerable freedom choice of viewing orientations. We develop a volumetric display system based on a rotating panel, which has 256 x 64 LEDs arranged into a 2D dot-matrix configuration. The panel rotates rapidly to create a phi 11.5" x 6.5" cylindrical volume and LEDs are instantaneously addressed by electrical stimulus, giving rise to over 8 million voxels within the volume during each cycle of rotation. Experimental results show that this system is an effective platform on which 3D scenes can be statically or dynamically displayed in detail. Since LEDs are arranged on a 2D panel and each LED is responsible for the production of multiple voxels along a circumferential path, the linear velocity of LED varies in proportion to the distance from the axis of rotation. It is apparent that voxels are not lined up equidistantly in the direction of the panel's motion due to the different linear velocities of LEDs. Consequently, the quality of image reconstruction may vary when it is positioned within different regions of the image space or oriented in different ways. The objective of this paper is to present issues relating to voxel spatial distribution. By predefining a homogeneous quadrate 3D datum points array, comparing positions of voxels with datum points and then abandoning those voxels whose position errors are beyond the given tolerance, the lack of homogeneity with respect to voxel spatial distribution (see Fig. 1 (a)) may nearly be overcome (see Fig. 1 (b)). In addition, experimental results show that as voxel spatial distribution within the image space is made nearly homogenous, the 3D image quality is considerably improved.
