A Spatial Study of Employment Structure in Beijing

Abstract:The spatial structure of regional economy is an important area of applications of spatial analysis, among which the spatial structure of employment is typical. Urban spatial structure of employment as an important component of spatial structure, once formed, will have a significant impact on the city's economic, political, transportation, culture and other areas, but the current domestic academic research on the spatial structure of employment still remain in the qualitative analysis and simple statistics, lacking of a systematic and in-depth analysis of it. Therefore, this study is to explore the spatial structure of employment of Beijing by using the basic unit of census data of 1996 and 2001, and the first national economic census data of Beijing 2004 to Geoda, GIS and spatial econometric methods, especially, combining the exploratory spatial data analysis(ESDA) and density function. Through the study we find that the spatial structure of employment in Beijing presents a single center, and the distribution of multi-layer situation shows significant clustering, and the clustering feature contains two main types of high - high and low low. Focusing on the trend of Beijing in employment gravity center's migration measurement and discrete analysis, we found that the employment gravity center of Beijing, over time, shifts towards the northeast, the employment space has been contracted, and the trend of spatial distribution of employment in Beijing is to gather heart.
