Abstract:This paper deals with the existence of travelling wave solutions for a general one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We construct these solutions by minimizing the energy under the constraint of fixed momentum. We also prove that the family of minimizers is stable. Our method is based on recent articles about the orbital stability for the classical and non-local Gross-Pitaevskii equations [3, 10]. It relies on a concentration-compactness theorem, which provides some compactness for the minimizing sequences and thus the convergence (up to a subsequence) towards a travelling wave solution.

Abstract:We study the stability of traveling waves of nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero condition at infinity obtained via a constrained variational approach. Two important physical models are Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation and cubic-quintic equation. First, under a non-degeneracy condition we prove a sharp instability criterion for 3D traveling waves of (GP), which had been conjectured in the physical literature. This result is also extended for general nonlinearity and higher dimensions, including 4D (GP) and 3D cubic-quintic equations. Second, for cubic-quintic type sub-critical or critical nonlinearity, we construct slow traveling waves and prove their nonlinear instability in any dimension. For traveling waves without vortices (i.e. nonvanishing) of general nonlinearity in any dimension, we find the sharp condition for linear instability. Third, we prove that any 2D traveling wave of (GP) is transversally unstable and find the sharp interval of unstable transversal wave numbers. Near unstable traveling waves of above cases, we construct unstable and stable invariant manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the stability for line solitary waves of the two dimensional Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation on $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{T}_L$ which is one of a high dimensional generalization of Korteweg-de Vries equation , where $\mathbb{T}_L$ is the torus with the period $2\pi L$. The orbital and asymptotic stability of the one soliton of Korteweg-de Vries equation on the energy space has been proved by Benjamin, Pego and Weinstein and Martel and Merle. We regard the one soliton of Korteweg-de Vries equation as a line solitary wave of Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation on $\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{T}_L$. We prove the stability and the transverse instability of the line solitary waves of Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation by applying Evans' function method and the argument of Rousset and Tzvetkov. Moreover, we prove the asymptotic stability for the orbitally stable line solitary wave of Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation by using the argument of Martel and Merle, a Liouville type theorem and a corrected virial type estimate.

Abstract:We prove the asymptotic stability of a finite sum of well-ordered solitary waves for the Zakharov–Kuznetsov equation in dimensions two and three. We also derive a qualitative version of the orbital stability result, which will be useful for studying the collision of two solitary waves in a forthcoming paper. The proof extends the ideas of Martel, Merle and Tsai for the sub-critical gKdV equation in dimension one to the higher-dimensional case. It relies on monotonicity properties on oblique half-spaces and rigidity properties around one solitary wave introduced by Côte, Muñoz, Pilod and Simpson in dimension two, and by Farah, Holmer, Roudenko and Yang in dimension three.

Abstract:Consideration herein is the stability issue of peaked solitary wave solution for the modified Camassa-Holm-Novikov equation, which is derived from the shallow water theory. This wave configuration accommodates the ordered trains of the modified Camassa-Holm-Novikov-peaked solitary solution. With the application of conservation laws and the monotonicity property of the localized energy functionals, we prove the orbital stability of this wave profile in the H 1 ( R ) energy space according to the modulation argument.

Abstract:In this article we study the one-dimensional, asymptotically linear, non-linear Schrödinger equation (NLS). We show the existence of a global smooth curve of standing waves for this problem, and we prove that these standing waves are orbitally stable. As far as we know, this is the first rigorous stability result for the asymptotically linear NLS. We also discuss an application of our results to self-focusing waveguides with a saturable refractive index.

Abstract:We consider the orbital stability of solitons of the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili-I equation in $\mathbb{R} \times (\mathbb{R}/2\pi\mathbb{Z})$ which is one of a high dimensional generalization of the Korteweg--de Vries equation. Benjamin showed that the Korteweg--de Vries equation possesses the stable one soliton. We regard the one soliton of the Korteweg--de Vries equation as a line soliton of the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili-I equation. Zakharov and Rousset--Tzvetkov proved the orbital instability of the line solitons of the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili-I equation on $\mathbb{R}^2$. In the case of the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili-I equation on $\mathbb{R} \times (\mathbb{R}/2\pi\mathbb{Z})$, the orbital instability of the line solitons with the traveling speed $c>4/\sqrt{3}$ and the orbital stability of the line solitons with the traveling speed $0<c<4/\sqrt{3}$ was proved by Rousset--Tzvetkov. In this paper, we prove the orbital stability of the line soliton of the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili-I equation on $\mathbb{R} \times (\mathbb{R}/2\pi\mathbb{Z})$ with the critical speed $c=4/\sqrt{3}$ and the Zaitsev solitons near the line soliton. Since the linearized operator around the line soliton with the traveling speed $4/\sqrt{3}$ is degenerate, we can not apply the argument by Rousset--Tzvetkov. To prove the stability of the line soliton, we investigate the branch of the Zaitsev solitons.

Stability and instability of the quasilinear Gross--Pitaevskii dark solitons

Abstract:We study a quasilinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero conditions at infinity. In previous works, we obtained a continuous branch of traveling waves, given by dark solitons indexed by their speed. Neglecting the quasilinear term, one recovers the Gross--Pitaevskii equation, for which the branch of dark solitons is stable. Moreover, Z.~Lin showed that the Vakhitov--Kolokolov~(VK) stability criterion (in terms of the momentum of solitons) holds for general semilinear equations with nonvanishing conditions at infinity. In the quasilinear case, we prove that the VK stability criterion still applies, by generalizing Lin's arguments. Therefore, we deduce that the branch of dark solitons is stable for weak quasilinear interactions. For stronger quasilinear interactions, a cusp appears in the energy-momentum diagram, implying the stability of fast waves and the instability of slow waves.

We also show that for non-negative initial data, the solution remains non-negative. This is achieved by connecting the inhomogeneous kinetic wave equation, for such dimensions, to the cubic part of the quantum Boltzmann equation for bosons, with Maxwell or hard potential and no collisional averaging.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with focusing inverse-power potential and the Sobolev critical nonlinearity. By considering the corresponding local minimization problem, we show that the existence of ground state solutions. Then, we prove that the solution of this equation exists globally when the initial data sufficiently close to the ground states. Based on these results, we show that the set of ground states is orbitally stable.

Abstract:In the previous paper, we constructed a smooth branch of travelling waves for the 2 dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Here, we continue the study of this branch. We show some coercivity results, and we deduce from them the kernel of the linearized operator, a spectral stability result, as well as a uniqueness result in the energy space. In particular, our result proves the non degeneracy of these travelling waves, which is a key step in the classification of these waves and for the construction of multi-travelling waves.

Angular traveling waves of the high-dimensional Boussinesq equation

Abstract:This paper studies traveling waves with nonzero wave speed (angular traveling waves) of the high-dimensional Boussinesq equation that have not been studied before. We analyze the properties of these waves and demonstrate that, unlike the unique stationary solution, they lack positivity, radial symmetry, and exponential decay. By employing variational and geometric approaches, along with perturbation theory, we establish the orbital (in)stability and strong instability of these traveling waves.

Abstract:We investigate the properties of standing waves to a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inverse-square potential on the half-line. We first establish the existence of standing waves. Then, by a variational characterization of the ground states, we establish the orbital stability of standing waves for mass sub-critical nonlinearity. Owing to the non-compactness and the absence of translational invariance of the problem, we apply a profile decomposition argument. We obtain convergent minimizing sequences by comparing the problem to the problem at "infinity" (i.e., the equation without inverse square potential). Finally, we establish orbital instability by a blow-up argument for mass super-critical nonlinearity.

Abstract:As a sequel to our previous analysis in [9] <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2202.09411" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2202.09411">arXiv:2202.09411</a> on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation on the product space $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}$, we construct a branch of finite energy travelling waves as minimizers of the Ginzburg-Landau energy at fixed momentum. We deduce that minimizers are precisely the planar dark solitons when the length of the transverse direction is less than a critical value, and that they are genuinely two-dimensional solutions otherwise. The proof of the existence of minimizers is based on the compactness of minimizing sequences, relying on a new symmetrization argument that is well-suited to the periodic setting.
