Abstract:Fruit tissue is heavily damaged during fresh-cut processing, which induces a series of physiological disorders such as softening, browning and microbial infection. Rapid deterioration and short shelf-life are the major hurdle to the commercial marketing of fresh-cut fruit. This paper introduces physiological and biochemical characteristics and summarizes key biotechnologies for fresh-cut processed fruit to provide practical and theoretical basis for the development of fresh-cut fruit industry.

Abstract:The market demand is directly affected by food freshness and the post-harvest spoilage of raw fresh foods,which causes incalculable economic losses and therefore motivates the development of preservation technologies.High voltage electric field (HVEF) is a safe and environment-friendly technology for food processing.HVEF is one of the most promising technologies to preserve raw fresh foods that requires very small energy consumption with no heat effect and only a small temperature increase in the processed foods and causes little effect on the quality of the foods themselves.This manuscript outlines the basic principle of HVEF and provides a systematic elucidation of its mechanism for preserving fruits and vegetables,aquatic products and meat products with respect to membrane potential,enzyme activities and microstructure.Furthermore,future research prospects are discussed.

Abstract:Watermelon (Citrullus vulgaris Schrad.) seeds of two diploid varieties,Wanza 1 and Fengshou 2,were pre-dried at different levels of silica gel and then stored for 23 years under room temperature and hermetic conditions.The best storage treatments had 96％ and 91％ germination percentage for Wanza 1 and Fengshou 2 varieties when the seed water content was adjusted at 2.32％ and 2.23％ respectively.The germination-ability of the seed was negatively correlated with the seed water content during storage period.Positive correlations were found between both POD activity and sucrose content with the germination percentage,but SOD activity showed a negative correlation with the germination percentage.In addition,the viability of Wanza 1 of each treatment were compared after 9,15,20 and 23 years of storage.For the seed with water content of 5.22％ or higher,the germination percentage declined quickly.However,seed water content with range of 1.65％ and 4.12％,the germination percentage were well retained after 20-23 years of storage.These results suggest that diploid watermelon seeds can retain high viability under ultra-dry condition in the long term storage.

Abstract:As a pharmacal and edible vegetable,green asparagus is rich in many kinds of nutrients and widely welcome.At present,most of the asparagus produced in China are for exporting.But at ambient temperature,its extreme perishable property and high respiration rate seriously limit the shelf-life.Some proper preserving methods have been proved to reserve its fresh property effectively.Lately,there were a lot of studies and reports on green asparagus preserving which were summarized in this review.

Abstract:'Zheyong 2'is a new mid-maturity muskmelon cultivar. The fruit is nearly spherical. The average fruit weight is about 1.3 kg. The ground color of its pericarp is light green. The fruit net on pericarp is well-distributed,moderate in density and width. The variety belongs to soft-flesh type and its flesh is light yellow green with thickness of 3 cm. The soluble solids content in the center of fruit is usually more than 15%. The fruit yield is about 27 t·hm-2. And this cultivar is resistant to powdery mildew.
Preliminary study on physiological indices related to natural senescence in muskmelon

Abstract:Physiological indices such as contents of soluble protein(Pr),chlorophyll(Chl) and malondialdehyde(MDA),the dynamic changes of activities of catalase(CAT),peroxidase(POD),superoxide dismutase(SOD),and the changes of root vitality were analyzed in muskmelon during natural senescence using the varieties of Yugu and Xiami grown in plastic greenhouse.Results showed that the leaf senescence of different cultivars and leaf location were quite different.Contents of soluble Pr and Chl increased with leaf age and then decreased.However,the decreasing rate was different.Xiami has more Pr and Chl than Yugu and the functional leaves could sustain for more days.Content of MDA was low at the early development of leaves,and the change was relatively flat.However,MDA content was increased relatively rapidly during late growth stages.SOD activity in leaves has 'M' shaped curve,and the time of appearance of the inflection point differed between varieties and leaf locations.Xiami had stronger activity of SOD than Yugu and thus a higher antioxidant capacity and delay of senescence.POD activity increased as leaf gradually aged,and reached the highest value and then began to decrease until the death of the leaf.Because POD continuously increased during the most time of the whole development but decreased within a relatively short period,the POD activity probably has a greater impact on leaf senescence.CAT activity increased with the process of leaf development,reached the maximum at 21-28 days and then declined with the aging of the leaves.The rate of decline of CAT in Xiami was much slower than Yugu during the later stage of leaf development.Root activity reached the highest value in the first flowering,with Xiami showing higher activity of root viability than Yugu.After pollination,root activity began to decline and has the lowest value when fruit maturity.

Abstract:The paper studied watermelon〔Citrullus lanatus(Thunb.)Matsum.et Nakai〕pollen cryopreservation methods and pollination technique.The result indicated that pollens of‘Zaojia'water- melon can be stored at-18 ℃ or-25 ℃ under vacuum condition for 186 to 223 days with over 50% ac- tivity.Pollen activity can be varied under different storage conditions,of which-25 ℃ can have longer storage time than-18 ℃,and the pollen vitality is higher.The stored pollens should be activated at 25 ℃ for 30 min before usage,so as to achieve higher fruit setting rate.The application of stored pollen will not influence the quality of watermelon.

Abstract:Cucumis melo is a climacteric melon known for its peculiar musky aroma and sweet taste. It gained its popularity as thirst-quenching and refreshing fruit. Muskmelon is one of the commercially important fruit cultivated throughout the world in temperate, tropical and subtropical regions. The fruit shape may be round to oval, tan or straw coloured with netted peel. The flesh color may be white or orange. Muskmelon with yellow-orange coloured pulp with a network of intertwining green veins at the outside are highly preferred. Maturity stages of muskmelon are classified into 5 types and usually harvested at a maturity stage called ‘full-slip’ condition. The formation of the abscission layer between the vine and fruit determines the maturity of fruit in the field. Maturity of the harvested fruit has greater impact on sugar content, volatile content and the texture. The fruit is abundant in nutritional and medicinal properties. It offers a good source of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6 and potassium. Muskmelon, being climacteric fruit, cannot be stored for a longer time due to its continuous respiration. Hence, the value addition of muskmelon play a vital role in preserving the fruit in different forms. This review describes the origin, types, maturity indices, nutritional benefits and different value-added products of Cucumis melo.

Abstract:The fresh fruit of juicy peach is famous for its admirable taste and rich nutrient, which is widely recognized by the market and consumers. Because of its own respiratory peak and the production of strong seasonal, it is liable to decay with the rapid deterioration, resulting in huge economic losses. As the continuous development of agricultural industry and social economy, the peach preservation technology for multi-directional ways have been explored through the detection of important physiological indicators (weight loss, hardness, soluble solids content, relative conductivity, respiratory strength, malonaldehyde content, polyphenol oxidase content and decay index, etc.) with a gradual understanding of the mechanism of fruit and vegetable decay, which has formed some practical methods in the actual production. Those methods are divided into three categories according to technical principles, which are named physical preservation methods (temperature control, air conditioning, adsorption materials, ultraviolet radiation and ultrasound, etc.), chemical preservation methods (calcium regulator, fungicide, coating technology and growth regulators, etc.) and biological preservation methods (plant-source Chinese herbal medicine, microbial antagonism bacteria and biological enzyme preparations, etc.), which have their own characteristics in the effectiveness, safety and economy. On this basis, the combined preservation methods have been investigated and developed after integration and optimization, which have obvious advantages, and are becoming the important future research trends of antisepsis and preservation of peaches. In this paper, the status quo, analysis methods, practical techniques and effect evaluation of domestic juicy peach preservation were summarized, which can provide scientific evidences for continuously improving the postharvest storage and transportation quality and economic benefit of the fruit.
Effect of Preservation Temperature on Viability of Netted-Muskmelon Pollen

Abstract:Experiment was carried out with the pollens of netted-muskmelon (Cucumis melo) for studying the effects of cultured and preservation temperatures on the pollen viability. The result indicated that 25-35℃ was the optimum germination temperature; the lowest germination temperature was 10℃, and the highest temperature was 45℃. The 5℃ was the optimum temperature for storing pollen for a short term.Temperature of as low as -20℃ and -75℃ were proved to be not suitable for pollen preservation of netted-muskmelon.

Abstract:Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is an important tropical fruit with a delicate taste, pleasant aroma, and high nutritional value. In recent years, with the promotion of the rural revitalization strategy and the development of the poverty alleviation industry, China has gradually become an important mango producer. However, the short shelf life of mango fruit, the difficulty in regulating the postharvest quality, and the lack of preservation technology are the main problems that need to be solved in China's mango industry. In this paper, the physiological changes and mechanisms of mango during postharvest ripening were summarized, including sugar and acid changes, pigment synthesis and accumulation, and aroma formation and accumulation. The physical, chemical, and biological technologies (such as endogenous phytohormones, temperature, light, chemical preservatives, and edible coatings) commonly used in the regulation of mango postharvest ripening and their action principles were emphatically expounded. The shortcomings of the existing mango postharvest ripening regulation technology and physiological mechanism research were analyzed in order to provide a reference for the industrial application and development of mango postharvest.

Abstract:That the blanched treatments on fresh muskmelon and the temperature were at room temperature (23.7℃), 50℃and 65℃for 1 min were researched. The blanched and drained muskmelons were storaged in room temperature condition, and determined of various physiological indexes of muskmelon for every 5 d. The results indicated that:the preservation effects of all treated groups with blanching were better than the control group, especially the 50℃blanched group achieved the best preservation effect on muskmelons.

Abstract:Maturity is an important factor that affects the chilling resistance of fruit and vegetable.Fruits and vegetables with different maturity show different cold resistance due to the differences in the factors such as membrane fatty acid composition,content of cell inclusions(soluble solid,sugar,calcium,proline),and some kinds of relevant metabolic activity(respiratory metabolism,ethylene metabolism,reactive oxygen metabolism,membrane lipid metabolism).On the basic of previous correlational studies,the relationship between maturity and chilling resistance of fruit and vegetable and its acting mechanism are reviewed in this paper.The purpose is to find the appropriate maturity of fruit and vegetable for low temperature storage and to provide theoretical foundation for alleviating the chilling injury of them.

Abstract:Low temperature storage prolongs the postharvest life of various fresh fruit and vegetables. However, tropical fruit may suffer from cold stress during storage. Here, Jiashi melons was stored at 3 °C, and 0.5 °C for a period of 36 days, with storage at 21 °C serving as a control. Rotting was delayed at the lower temperatures compared to the control. Storage at 21 °C resulted in more severe weight loss and a high rotting rate. By day 36, the weight loss rate as a result of moisture reduction reached 11% in the control, but only 8% at the lower temperatures. Chilling injury was observed at both low temperatures over time, but its onset was later for storage at 3 °C. The fruit stored at 3 °C also scored better for rotting rate, weight loss rate, and a chilling injury index than fruit stored at 0.5 °C. Storage at 3 °C was associated with higher activity of peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), fatty acid desaturase (FAD), and adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase). The transcriptomes of the fruit were sequenced for the time points 0 d, 12 d and 24 d at all three storage temperatures. This identified a total of 415 co-expressed differential genes that are mainly involved in regulation of transcription, signal transduction, response to stress, lipid metabolism and other processes. The findings were corroborated by targeted RT-qPCR analysis. The expression levels of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) indicated that storage at 3 °C induced overexpression of the early cold-responsive genes ICE1 and calcium-dependent protein kinase (CDPK). Extended storage at 3 °C reduced the damage of low-temperature induced oxidative stress and altered lipid metabolism that otherwise would negatively affect cell membrane functions, so that cell homeostasis was maintained for longer. This was enabled by increased expression of MYB, auxin response factor, heat shock protein (HSPs), FAD synthetase and ATPase. This study provides insights in the molecular responses of Jiashi melon towards cold stress, and provides a theoretical basis for the development of new storage and preservation technologies.
