Abstract:Traditional evaluation method of camouflage texture effect is subjective evaluation. It's very tedious and inconvenient to direct the texture designing. In this paper, a systemic and rational method for direction and evaluation of camouflage texture designing is proposed. A new camouflage texture evaluation method based on WSSIM (Weight structural similarity) is given to access the effects of camouflage texture at first. Then nature image features between the camouflage texture and the background image are calculated to help direct the designing camouflage texture. Primary experimental results show that the proposed method is helpful for evaluation and design of the camouflage texture.

Abstract:Different eigenspace-based approaches have been proposed for the recognition of faces, i.e. eigenface, fisherface and Laplacianface. For fisherfaces, the original image space is reduced to an n-c dimensional subspace in which the standard LDA is carried out, where n is the number of training samples and c is the number of classes. In this paper, we present a spectral analysis of fisherface which shows that the initial PCA dimensionality reduction might be insufficient. The noise might not be completely eliminated. This is due to the fact that fisherface only takes into account the discriminating structure while ignores geometrical structure. Based on the theoretical analysis, we propose a new method, called enhanced fisherface, which takes into account the discriminating structure as well as the intrinsic geometrical structure. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is effective in improving the performance of face recognition.

Abstract:This paper reports an alternative approach to the evaluation of infrared camouflage effectiveness via a multi-fractal method. By calculating multi-fractal spectra of the target region and the background regions in an infrared image, the spectrum shape features and the discrete Fréchet distances among these spectra were used to analyze the camouflage effectiveness of the target qualitatively and quantitatively, and the correlation coefficients of the spectra were further used as the index of camouflage effectiveness. It was found that the camouflaged target had better camouflage effectiveness than the target without camouflage in the same one background, and the same one camouflaged target had different camouflage effectiveness in different backgrounds. On the whole, the target matching well with its background had high camouflage effectiveness value. This approach can expand the application of multi-fractal theory in infrared camouflage technology, which should be useful for the research of infrared camouflage materials, the design of camouflage patterns as well as the deployment of military equipment in battlefield.

Abstract:Abstract In general, traditional evaluations of target camouflage effects are usually conducted based on observational data and general results of statistical analysis. This widely applied methodology quantifies the detection and identification probabilities of camouflage objects but has considerable shortcomings. This data evaluation process is laborious and time-consuming and very low in reproducibility, which sheds light on the necessity of developing a more efficient method in this study field. The growth of computer-aided image processing technology provides technical support for camouflage effect evaluation based on digital image processing. Digital pattern painting, which has been previously applied to combat utility uniforms, is a new methodology full of potential due to its broad geographical adaptability. This study proposes a multi-scale pattern-in-picture method to evaluate camouflage effects at different distances. We also established a computer-aided background image library and camouflage assessments with digital simulation and created an evaluation system that could be effectively applied to combat utility uniforms. More than 40 testers participated in this study, who were asked to score the designed camouflage schemes using the evaluation system proposed. The data from simulation assessments and individual evaluations show that the computer-aided simulation assessments conducted as part of this research can efficiently and objectively evaluate the camouflage effect on military objects.

Abstract:Due to the low contrast, lack of details and difficulties to distinguish target from background in traditional infrared(IR) imaging systems, the detection and recognition probability of camouflage infrared target is relatively low. Compared with the traditional IR imaging systems, the method of polarimetric imaging uses polarization information, which can help detect and isolate manmade objects from the natural environment in complex. The method of infrared polarimetric imaging is proposed in this paper. The experiment builds the IR polarimetric imaging system. An IR polarizer made of BaF2 is assembled before the IR camera. By rotating the IR polarizer, twelve polarization images are obtained at every thirty degree. The gray levels of the images are calculated by program. Stokes polarization vector representation is introduced to calculate I of stokes vector and degree of linear polarization (DoLP) with polarization images. According to the character of parameter I of stokes vector and DoLP, we propose an IR polarization fusion method based on Shearlets using regional saliency analysis. This method can highlight the target area and have good performance in the fusion of IR radiation information and IR polarization characteristics. To test the effectiveness of this method, we use mid-wave infrared (MWIR) camera and long-wave infrared(LWIR) camera to get real images. Compared with original image, both the subjective and objective evaluation results indicate that the enhanced images obtained by our method have much more image details and polarization information, which is useful for target detection and recognition.
Fuzzy c-means clustering based digital camouflage pattern design and its evaluation

Abstract:Optical camouflage is one of the significant ways to protect military weapons in modern wars. Effective camouflage design can largely reduce the conspicuity of the fixed targets in a real battlefield. In this paper, an innovative digital camouflage pattern design based on fuzzy c-means clustering and its evaluation is presented to imitate the background both in color and texture. In this new method, histogram quantization and matching between the real background and I military standard colors is first carried out in HSV color space. Then camouflage pattern is abstained by a combination of the fuzzy c-means clustering and morphological operations, such as open operation and close operation. And the camouflage scene is composed with tank using new digital camouflage pattern. Finally, several common edge detectors are utilized to give an objective evaluation to the new digital camouflage pattern which is painting on the target in a composed camouflage scene. Assessment results also show the effectiveness and potency of the new proposed method.

Robustness Study of Gray Distribution Characteristics in True and False Target Recognition

Abstract:Setting false targets is one of the important means of battlefield camouflage. The survivability of protected targets largely depends on the effect of photoelectric deception and jamming of false targets. The comprehensive use of robust image features plays a key role in correctly evaluating the photoelectric deception jamming efficiency of false targets and quickly identifying true and false targets. The existing efficiency evaluation models lack systematic research on the robustness of various image features in different environments. There are common problems of single target background and incomplete consideration of environmental factors, which lead to the instability of the extracted target image features, and then affect the evaluation results. Given the above problems, two kinds of environmental conditions are set: the change of observation distance and the change of atmospheric attenuation intensity. The experimental environment is simulated by an equivalent simulation method. After filtering the target background interference and extracting the target subject image and features, the similarity measurement method is used to calculate the similarity between true and false target subject images. By comparing the changes of gray distribution, contour, and texture feature similarity value, the robustness ranking and change reasons of features under different environmental conditions are summarized. At the same time, experiments are designed to verify the robustness of gray distribution features. The results show that the gray distribution feature has strong robustness, and the combination of gray distribution feature on the battlefield can effectively help officers and soldiers identify true and false targets in a complex environment.

Abstract:After years of development, military camouflage has formed a set of theoretical and technical systems represented by color camouflage. At present, a large number of camouflage technology research has been carried out for multispectral reconnaissance of visible and near-infrared. In order to better detect and identify the camouflage target, it is necessary to expand the new reconnaissance band and improve the spectral resolution of the reconnaissance instrument. In this paper, the research on camouflage target recognition technology is carried out through short-wave infrared hyperspectral imaging technology, and the camouflage target is identified by SAM, ACM and CEM algorithms respectively, and the characteristics of three methods in short-wave infrared camouflage target recognition are verified. This research can improve the ability to detect and identify camouflage targets and provide a new means for modern battlefield reconnaissance.

Abstract:Fourier single-pixel imaging (FSI) has been proven to achieve excellent image quality when sampling all information in the Fourier domain. However, when the size of an imaging target is large, fully sampling Fourier coefficients would result in a large waste of sampling resources. An adaptive sampling method is proposed that is simple to implement and effectively improves the reconstructed image quality from undersampled Fourier coefficients. Through a rough estimation of spectrum energy distribution, the adaptive sampling trajectory is generated by the designed adaptive probability density function. Both the results of computational simulations and experiments demonstrate that the proposed method has overcome the limitations of the insufficient sampling rates, and the reconstruction images have obtained dramatic improvements. A Novel Method for Automatic Camouflage Pattern Synthesize

Abstract:Camouflage plays an indispensable role in modern military. Generally, a camouflage pattern includes a plurality of shapes units, which are split by elemental colors. The fixed camouflage pattern is low adaptability and concealability for changeable battlefields. Moreover, the conventionally camouflage design is time and resource consuming for manual drawing. In this paper, we propose a dynamic camouflage synthesizing method. Firstly, the texture patterns of one class of battlefield images is extracted using convolutional transfer network. We use 3*3 convolution kernels to extract texture features. And the covariance matrix is used as loss function to calculate the loss of different image texture features. Colors construction and their distribution of the specified battlefield images is extracted according to a clustering-based algorithm. Finally, the statistical color units are embedded into the texture patterns. We assess the adaptability and the concealability of synthesized camouflage using Eye Tracking based criteria. Comparing to the People’s Liberation Army Type 87 woodland pattern and the digital camouflage pattern synthesized using our previous method, testing results of our synthesized camouflage patterns were better in different saccade indicators. This demonstrates camouflage pattern synthesize proposed got better concealment and the validity of proposed method. Besides, we also compared our method with local binary pattern for extracting texture features. The experiments results indicated the method proposed had better consistency to the scene images.

Abstract:To comprehensively evaluate the camouflage effect of a camouflaged vehicle in a complex background based on the detection and identification processes of the time-limited search model, the visual saliency degree and feature similarity degree were used to represent the camouflage effect, and a camouflage effect evaluation method was proposed. For the visual saliency degree algorithm, in which the concepts of local saliency degree and target saliency degree were introduced, the visual saliency features of the camouflaged vehicle and background image were manually extracted, multiscale saliency matrices were constructed, and the comprehensive saliency function was used to calculate the visual saliency degree. Based on the bag of visual words model, the feature similarity degree algorithm extracted the local features from public images of the camouflaged vehicles, clustered these features to form a visual word bag, and calculated the feature similarity degree by comparing the local features of the camouflaged vehicle with the visual word bag. Through experimental verification and analysis of the results, the method considering complex landform background characteristics, battlefield target reconnaissance processes, and different camouflage statuses of the vehicle could objectively obtain the camouflage effect value of vehicles, quantitatively determine the advantageous application environment of different camouflaged states, and provide data support for camouflaged state design and concealed area selection.

Abstract:We propose a new model to assess the effectiveness of camouflage in terms of perceived color difference and gradient magnitude. The “image color similarity index” (ICSI) and gradient magnitude similarity deviation (GMSD) were employed to analyze color and texture differences, respectively, between background and camouflage images. Information entropy theory was used to calculate weights for each metric, yielding an overall camouflage effectiveness metric. During the analysis process, both spatial and color perceptions of the human visual system (HVS) were considered, to mimic real-world observations. Subjective tests were used to compare our proposed method with previous methods, and our results confirmed the validity of assessing camouflage effectiveness based on perceived color difference and gradient magnitude.

Abstract:Infrared camouflage refers to the capability of hiding or changing the infrared radiation characteristics,hence improving the survival rate of the objects.However,advanced multi-band detection technologies have emerged as a significant threat to the objects,necessitating the development of multi-band compatible infrared camouflage technologies.To address the challenge,it's of vital importance to clarify the camouflage requirements of different bands and design hierarchical structures based on the difference in electromagnetic response and structure size in these bands.Finally,it's essential to recognize the shortcomings of existing research and promote camouflage technologies more applicable,easy to prepare,and lower cost.

Abstract:This paper presents a digital camouflage texture feature extraction method based on dominant colors and co-occurrence matrix.The factor of proportion is added to RWM in extracting dominant colors,and the factor of dominant colors is added to Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix(GLCM) in extracting texture feature.Experimental results in visual observation are good,which indicates that the method can be used in designing digital camouflage for specific environment.

Abstract:Since ancient times, it has been essential to adopting camouflage on the battlefield, whether it is in the forefront, in-depth or the rear. The traditional evaluation method is made up of people opinion. By watching target or looking at the pictures, and determine the effect of camouflage, so it can be more influenced by man's subjective factors. And now, in order to objectively reflect the camouflage effect, we set up a model through using images similarity to evaluate camouflage effect. Image similarity comparison is divided into two main image feature comparison: image color features and texture features of images. We now using computer design camouflage, camouflage pattern design is divided into two aspects of design color and design plaques. For the design of the color, we based on HSV color model, and as for the design of plague, the key steps are the background color edge extraction, we adopt algorithm based on k-means clustering analysis of the method of background color edge extraction.

A field-based method for evaluating thermal properties of static and mobile camouflage

Abstract:Reliable and realistic methods for assessment of thermal infrared signature properties for military purposes are important. With a basis in ongoing developments of imaging technologies, especially towards mass markets, including small handheld cameras or automotive sensors, thermal infrared sensors are expected to pose an increasing detection threat in the future. In this paper, we present a field-based approach that evaluates thermal contrast of camouflage nets, as well as mobile camouflage systems. In the proposed method, relative differences in thermal behavior between target and background are evaluated in a controlled manner in an outdoor environment over extended periods of ten days or more. The camouflage materials under test are mounted identically, in operationally realistic environments, and recorded with a thermal sensor at an image rate of 6 images per hour. Hence, thermal contrast values between each target and selected parts of the scene background are obtained during a full 24 hour period of time. Weather data are collected along with the thermal image data. In the subsequent analysis, average thermal contrasts between targets and selected backgrounds are calculated for certain well-defined time slots, such as night, day and transition between day and night. Only time slots that satisfy weather conditions requirements are analyzed, as changing weather is expected to affect the thermal response to camouflage systems. We believe the proposed method is a good compromise between controlled lab-tests, which are hampered by their lack of transfer value to thermal behavior in theatre, and field measurements during operations, where reproducibility of data can be low.

Abstract:The need for standardized guidelines and common evaluation techniques for assessing camouflage nets represents a challenge for the military operational community. This paper proposes a laboratory assessment methodology for the evaluation of camouflage nets. This method aims to be an accurate initial assessment before field tests, as the final stages for camouflage evaluation. Furthermore, it is more convenient to standardize laboratory indoor setups as the initial step because parameters can be controlled with precise equipment, eliminating any unexpected technical variables. Our approach combines radar testing in a semi-anechoic chamber and EO/IR (Electro-Optical/Infra-Red) assessment using an indoor laboratory setup. This method offers a more comprehensive and accurate evaluation compared to methods that focus on a single type of test. Following this procedure, we can assess the performance characteristics of camouflage nets by determining their behavior in all spectral domains associated with surveillance optical and radar equipment. For the EO/IR devices, we are interested in analyzing the nets in the m wavelength band, and both the mid-wave infrared (MWIR) m and long-wave infrared (LWIR) m thermal infrared transmission bands. For the radar systems, we focus on the X-band frequency in the range of 9 GHz to 11 GHz. The paper presents the results obtained by measuring three different multispectral camouflage net samples. It is shown that Samples Under Test (SUT) have relatively consistent average radar transmission attenuation with a small range of 2.22 dB. Furthermore, the average attenuation values vary between 3.3 dB and 14.71 dB when the camouflage net is rotated for further evaluation. Moreover, radar reflection results characterized by reflection coefficient values, standard deviation, mean, and Coefficient of Variation (CV), show that all samples, regardless of orientation, deviate from the consistent reference data of ten runs. In the thermal infrared domain, the nets are similar in terms of solar loading, showing a similar temperature increase of 8 ± 1° C, but the transmission levels are different, between 11.7% and 21.8%. As for the reflectance measurements, the three SUT show different behaviors in terms of reflectance levels and contrast patterns, especially in the near and shortwave infrared bands of the EO domain.
