Abstract:We investigate the behavior of the chiral condensate in lattice QCD at finite temperature and finite chemical potential. The study was done using two flavors of light quarks and with a series of β and ma at the lattice size 24×122×6. The calculation was done in the Taylor expansion formalism. We are able to calculate the first and second order derivatives of ψψ in both isoscalar and isovector channels. With the first derivatives being small, we find that the second derivatives are sizable close to the phase transition and that the magnitude of ψψ decreases under the influence of finite chemical potential in both channels.

Abstract:We investigate the phase structure and the equation of state (EoS) for dense two-color QCD (QC 2 D) at low temperature ( T = 40 MeV, 32 4 lattice) for the purpose of extending our previous works [1, 2] at T = 80 MeV (16 4 lattice). Indeed, a rich phase structure below the pseudo-critical temperature T c as a function of quark chemical potential μ has been revealed, but finite volume effects in a high-density regime sometimes cause a wrong understanding. Therefore, it is important to investigate the temperature dependence down to zero temperature with large-volume simulations. By performing 32 4 simulations, we obtain essentially similar results to the previous ones, but we are now allowed to get a fine understanding of the phase structure via the temperature dependence. Most importantly, we find that the hadronic-matter phase, which is composed of thermally excited hadrons, shrinks with decreasing temperature and that the diquark condensate scales as ⟨ qq ⟩ ∝ μ 2 in the BCS phase, a property missing at T = 80 MeV. From careful analyses, furthermore, we confirm a tentative conclusion that the topological susceptibility is independent of μ . We also show the temperature dependence of the pressure, internal energy, and sound velocity as a function of μ . The pressure increases around the hadronic-superfluid phase transition more rapidly at the lower temperature, while the temperature dependence of the sound velocity is invisible. Breaking of the conformal bound is also confirmed thanks to the smaller statistical error.

Abstract:Using combined strong coupling and hopping parameter expansions, we derive an effective three-dimensional theory from thermal lattice QCD with heavy Wilson quarks. The theory depends on traced Polyakov loops only and correctly reflects the centre symmetry of the pure gauge sector as well as its breaking by finite mass quarks. It is valid up to certain orders in the lattice gauge coupling and hopping parameter, which can be systematically improved. To its current order it is controlled for lattices up to N_\tau\sim 6 at finite temperature. For nonzero quark chemical potentials, the effective theory has a fermionic sign problem which is mild enough to carry out simulations up to large chemical potentials. Moreover, by going to a flux representation of the partition function, the sign problem can be solved. As an application, we determine the deconfinement transition and its critical end point as a function of quark mass and all chemical potentials.

QCD deconfinement transition line up to $μ_B=400$ MeV from finite volume lattice simulations

Abstract:The QCD cross-over line in the temperature ($T$) -- baryo-chemical potential ($\mu_B$) plane has been computed by several lattice groups by calculating the chiral order parameter and its susceptibility at finite values of $\mu_B$. In this work we focus on the deconfinement aspect of the transition between hadronic and Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) phases. We define the deconfinement temperature as the peak position of the static quark entropy ($S_Q(T,\mu_B)$) in $T$, which is based on the renormalized Polyakov loop. We extrapolate $S_Q(T,\mu_B)$ based on high statistics finite temperature ensembles on a $16^3\times 8$ lattice to finite density by means of a Taylor expansion to eighth order in $\mu_B$ (NNNLO) along the strangeness neutral line. For the simulations the 4HEX staggered action was used with 2+1 flavors at physical quark masses. In this setup the phase diagram can be drawn up to unprecedentedly high chemical potentials. Our results for the deconfinement temperature are in rough agreement with phenomenological estimates of the freeze-out curve in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In addition, we study the width of the deconfinement crossover. We show that up to $\mu_B \approx 400$ MeV, the deconfinement transition gets broader at higher densities, disfavoring the existence of a deconfinement critical endpoint in this range. Finally, we examine the transition line without the strangeness neutrality condition and observe a hint for the narrowing of the crossover towards large $\mu_B$.

QCD Phase Transitions Via a Refined Truncation of Dyson-Schwinger Equations

Abstract:We investigate both the chiral and deconfinement phase transitions of QCD matter in a refined scheme of Dyson-Schwinger equations, which have been shown to be successful in giving the meson mass spectrum and matching the interaction with the results from ab initio computation. We verify the equivalence of the chiral susceptibility criterion with different definitions for the susceptibility and confirm that the chiral susceptibility criterion is efficient to fix not only the chiral phase boundary but also the critical end point (CEP), especially when one could not have the effective thermodynamical potential. We propose a generalized Schwinger function criterion for the confinement. We give the phase diagram of both phase transitions and show that in the refined scheme the position of the CEP shifts to lower chemical potential and higher temperature. Based on our calculation and previous results of the chemical freeze-out conditions, we propose that the CEP is located in the states of the matter generated by the Au--Au collisions with $\sqrt{{s}_{NN}}=9--15\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$.
Toward the application of large-$N$ deconfinement to SU(3) QCD

Abstract:It is generally known for $\mathrm{U}(N)$ gauge theory at finite temperature that phase transitions are manifested by taking the large-$N$ limit. Since the large-$N$ theory undergoes two thermodynamic phase transitions, a nontrivial intermediate phase can be realized in addition to the phases classified as the conventional confined and deconfined phases. In this talk, we discuss that a similar picture can be applied to QCD with $N=3$. In particular, we analyze the gauge configurations of lattice QCD calculations involving dynamical quarks and show the results of an analysis of the deviation due to finite-temperature effects from the Haar randomness expected at zero temperature in $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ gauge theory, using physical pictures suggested by the large-$N$ theory.

Abstract:We propose a novel quasiparticle interpretation of the equation of state of deconfined QCD at finite temperature. Using appropriate thermal masses, we introduce a phenomenological parametrization of the onset of confinement in the vicinity of the predicted phase transition. Lattice results of the energy density, the pressure, and the interaction measure of pure SU(3) gauge theory are excellently reproduced. We find a relationship between the thermal energy density of the Yang-Mills vacuum and the chromomagnetic condensate 〈B2〉T. Finally, an extension to QCD with dynamical quarks is discussed. Good agreement with lattice data for 2, 2+1, and 3 flavor QCD is obtained. We also present the QCD equation of state for realistic quark masses.

Abstract:We study the QCD phase transition based on the statistical treatment with the bag-model picture of hadrons, and derive a phenomenological relation among the low-lying hadron masses, the hadron sizes and the critical temperature of the QCD phase transition. We apply this phenomenological relation to both full QCD and quenched QCD, and compare these results with the corresponding lattice QCD results. Whereas such a statistical approach works well in full QCD, it results in an extremely large estimate of the critical temperature in quenched QCD, which indicates a serious problem in understanding of the QCD phase transition. This large discrepancy traces back to the fact that enough number of glueballs are not yet thermally excited at the critical temperature T_c \simeq 280 MeV in quenched QCD due to the extremely small statistical factor as exp(-m_G/T_c) \simeq 0.00207. This fact itself has a quite general nature independent of the particular choice of the effective model framework. We are thus arrive at a mystery, namely, what is really the trigger of the deconfinement phase transition.

Abstract:Based on the experimental observation that there is a coexisting region between the antiferromagnetic (AF) and d-wave superconducting (dSC) phases, the influences of gauge boson mass m a on chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement phase transitions in QED3 are investigated simultaneously within a unified framework, i.e., Dyson–Schwinger equations. The results show that the chiral symmetry restoration phase transition in the presence of the gauge boson mass m a is a typical second-order phase transition; the chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement phase transitions are coincident; the critical number of fermion flavors N c f decreases as the gauge boson mass m a increases, which implies that there exists a boundary that separates the N c f –m a plane into chiral symmetry breaking/confinement region for (N c f , m a ) below the boundary and chiral symmetry restoration/deconfinement region for (N c f , m a ) above it.

Abstract:Quark deconfinement phase transition at finite temperature and density is investigated in the frame of quantum mechanics. By solving the Schr\"odinger equation for a heavy quark in a thermal mean field, we calculate the quark probability distribution as a function of temperature and density. The confined wave function in the vacuum expands outward rapidly when the temperature and density are high enough. The obtained phase transition line agrees qualitatively with the result of lattice QCD.

Abstract:Since the dual fermion condensate be used to describe the center symmetry Z, we extend it to thermal QED(3) and study the deconfinement phase transition by the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equation for the massive fermion propagator at finite temperature. We show that, for a massive fermion, the system first appears as a deconfinement phase transition with the increase of temperature and then the chiral symmetry is restored and the corresponding temperature of the deconfinement phase transition increases with the enlargement of the fermion mass. It should be pointed out here that the results obtained in this paper are not model independent but are heavily dependent on the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equation we have chosen.

Abstract:The long-standing issue of the nature of the critical line of lattice QCD with the Wilson quark action at finite-temperatures, defined to be the line of vanishing pion screening mass, and its relation to the line of finite-temperature chiral tansition is examined. Analytical and numerical evidence are presented that the critical line forms a cusp at a finite gauge coupling, and the line of chiral transition runs past the tip of the cusp without touching the critical line. Implications on the continuum limit and the flavor dependence of chiral transition are discussed.

Abstract:The temperature dependence of the Landau gauge ghost propagator is investigated in pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory with lattice QCD simulations. Its behavior around the confined-deconfined phase transition temperature, T c ∼ 270 MeV, is investigated. The simulations show that in the deconfined phase, the ghost propagator is enhanced for small momenta, ≲ 1 GeV. Furthermore, the analysis of the spontaneous breaking of center symmetry on the ghost propagator is studied. Similarly as observed for the gluon propagator, the simulations result in a decoupling of the sectors where the phase of the Polyakov loop is either 0 or ±2 π /3 sectors, with the latter remaining indistinguishable. The results point to the possible use of the ghost propagator as an "order parameter" for the confined-deconfined phase transition.

Abstract:Gauge theories with matter fields in various representations play an important role in different branches of physics. Recently, it was proposed that several aspects of the interesting pseudogap phase of cuprate superconductors near optimal doping may be explained by an emergent $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry. Around the transition with positive hole-doping, one can construct a $(2+1)-$dimensional $SU(2)$ gauge theory coupled to four adjoint scalar fields which gives rise to a rich phase diagram with a myriad of phases having different broken symmetries. We study the phase diagram of this model on the Euclidean lattice using the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm. We find the existence of multiple broken phases as predicted by previous mean field studies. Depending on the quartic couplings, the $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry is broken down either to $U(1)$ or $\mathbb{Z}_2$ in the perturbative description of the model. We further study the confinement-deconfinement transition in this theory, and find that both the broken phases are deconfining in the range of volumes that we studied. However, there exists a marked difference in the behavior of the Polyakov loop between the two phases.

Abstract:In this paper we study the chiral phase transition of QCD at finite temperature and density by using the rank-2 confining separable gluon propagator model in the framework of Dyson–Schwinger Equations. The critical end point is located at (T CEP , μ CEP ) = (69, 270.3 MeV). It is also found that the first order phase transition might not end at one point, but experiences a two-phase coexisting meta-stable state. A comparison with the results in the previous literature is given.
Fluctuations and Correlations of Conserved Charges in QCD at Finite Temperature with Effective Models

Abstract:We study fluctuations of conserved charges including baryon number, electric charge, and strangeness as well as the correlations among these conserved charges in the $2+1$ flavor Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature. The calculated results are compared with those obtained from recent lattice calculations performed with an improved staggered fermion action at two values of the lattice cutoff with almost physical up and down quark masses and a physical value for the strange quark mass. We find that our calculated results are well consistent with those obtained in lattice calculations except for some quantitative differences for fluctuations related with strange quarks. Our calculations indicate that there is a pronounced cusp in the ratio of the quartic to quadratic fluctuations of baryon number, i.e. ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{4}^{B}/{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{2}^{B}$, at the critical temperature during the phase transition, which confirms that ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{4}^{B}/{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{2}^{B}$ is a useful probe of the deconfinement and chiral phase transition.

Abstract:We investigate three-colour QCD thermodynamics at finite quark chemical potential. Lattice QCD results are compared with a generalized Nambu Jona-Lasinio model in which quarks couple simultaneously to the chiral condensate and to a background temporal gauge field representing Polyakov loop dynamics. This so-called PNJL model thus includes features of both deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration. The parameters of the Polyakov loop effective potential are fixed in the pure gauge sector. The chiral condensate and the Polyakov loop as functions of temperature and quark chemical potential are calculated by minimizing the thermodynamic potential of the system. The resulting equation of state, (scaled) pressure difference and quark number density at finite quark chemical potential are then confronted with corresponding Lattice QCD data.
