Abstract:Bamboo, a well known plant has a broad application in nutrition, construction, handicrafts as well as furniture and decoration. A huge amount of bamboo wastes are disposed continuously as a byproduct of its utilization in various purposes especially in wood and furniture industries. A wide variety of researches and activities have been performed on utilization of bamboo wastes in manufacturing of green composites and hence, a wide assortment of substances have been tested to act as the supplementary components such as Portland cement, petrochemical polymers (e.g. poly-ethylene, polyvinyl chloride, poly-propylene, polyester resins), and recently biodegradable polymer matrices such as poly-lactic acid, plant proteins and poly-butylene-succinate. Scientific efforts have been studied the different combinations of bamboo wastes with polymer matrices and/or coupling agents. The most important items in these researches have been the mixing ratios of materials as composite components, physical and chemical properties of ingredient materials, production techniques and qualitative properties of composites such as physical characteristics, mechanical strength, durability, water and moisture resistance, abrasion resistance and external appearance. Effects of pre-treatment of ingredients have been extensively investigated by purpose of modification and improvement of composite characteristics. Extractable proteins from soybean and corn have also been studied as polymer matrix for making green composites. Zein, a plant protein found in corn that is widely applicable as coating agent or adhesive, is an example that has fulfilled experiments for making particle boards. Further similar experiences have been carried out on making composites from wood or bamboo sawdust or fibers with soybean proteins. The more common objectives through the above mentioned researches have been to find the best mixing ratios, the most effective coupling agents and/or modifiers, the optimum operational parameters in manufacturing processes, the qualitative measures such as tensile strength, bending strength, internal bond, modulus of elasticity, water absorption, thickness swelling, density and porosity. This chapter reviews technical and scientific attempts on making composites from bamboo wastes and various matrices and coupling agents especially those which have been performed in Zhejiang University and academic organizations cooperating with.

Abstract:With the gradual depletion of petroleum resources and the increasing global awareness of environmental protection, biodegradable plastics are receiving more and more attention as a green substitute for traditional petroleum-based plastics. Poly (lactic acid) is considered to be the most promising biodegradable material because of its excellent biodegradability, biocompatibility, and good processability. However, the brittleness and high cost limit its application in more fields. Lignin, as the second largest renewable biopolymer in nature after cellulose, is not only rich in reserves and low in cost, but it also has an excellent UV barrier, antioxidant activity, and rigidity. The molecular structure of lignin contains a large number of functional groups, which are easy to endow with new functions by chemical modification. Currently, lignin is mostly treated as waste in industry, and the value-added utilization is insufficient. The combination of lignin and poly (lactic acid) can on the one hand solve the problems of the high cost of PLA and less efficient utilization of lignin; on the other hand, the utilization of lignocellulosic biomass in compounding with biodegradable synthetic polymers is expected to afford high-performance wholly green polymer composites. This mini-review summarizes the latest research achievements of poly (lactic acid)/lignin composites. Emphasis was put on the influence of lignin on the mechanical properties of its composite with poly (lactic acid), as well as the compatibility of the two components. Future research on these green composites is also prospected.

Abstract:Today, the world is facing a great problem of plastic pollution due to its non-degradable nature. Alternatively, polylactic acid (PLA), a bio-based and biodegradable polymer, is emerging as a promising substitute for conventional, non-biodegradable plastics. However, its high cost, limited properties, and single functionality hinder its wide application. Lignin, a natural and sustainable biomass derived from plant cell walls, has become a promising filler for PLA. The integration of lignin into PLA composites holds the potential to realize the trifecta of low cost, high performance, and multifunctional properties while maintaining the principles of biodegradation and sustainability. However, the poor compatibility between PLA and lignin severely affects their overall performance, which creates a major challenge for the development of PLA/lignin composites. In recent years, a significant of advancements have been achieved in addressing this challenge. In this review, we provide a systematic insight into PLA/lignin composites, focusing on numerous compatibilization strategies including physical addition and chemical modification, and the progress on the structural characteristics, synthesis methods, performance improvements brought by lignin, and multiple applications. Finally, the existing problems and developmental direction of PLA/lignin composites are discussed. We believe that this review can be useful for future research prospects and industrial applications.

Abstract:With the depletion of petroleum energy, the possibility of prices of petroleum-based materials increasing, and increased environmental awareness, biodegradable materials as a kind of green alternative have attracted more and more research attention. In this context, poly (lactic acid) has shown a unique combination of properties such as nontoxicity, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and good workability. However, examples of its known drawbacks include poor tensile strength, low elongation at break, poor thermal properties, and low crystallization rate. Lignocellulosic materials such as lignin and cellulose have excellent biodegradability and mechanical properties. Compounding such biomass components with poly (lactic acid) is expected to prepare green composite materials with improved properties of poly (lactic acid). This paper is aimed at summarizing the research progress of modification of poly (lactic acid) with lignin and cellulose made in in recent years, with emphasis on effects of lignin and cellulose on mechanical properties, thermal stability and crystallinity on poly (lactic acid) composite materials. Development of poly (lactic acid) composite materials in this respect is forecasted.

Abstract:Lignin, a valuable polymer of natural origin, displays numerous desired intrinsic properties; however, modification processes leading to the value-added products suitable for composite materials' applications are in demand. Chemical modification routes involve mostly reactions with hydroxyl groups present in the structure of lignin, but other paths, such as copolymerization or grafting, are also utilized. On the other hand, physical techniques, such as irradiation, freeze-drying, and sorption, to enhance the surface properties of lignin and the resulting composite materials, are developed. Various kinds of chemically or physically modified lignin are discussed in this review and their effects on the properties of polymeric (bio)materials are presented. Lignin-induced enhancements in green polymer composites, such as better dimensional stability, improved hydrophobicity, and improved mechanical properties, along with biocompatibility and non-cytotoxicity, have been presented. This review addresses the challenges connected with the efficient modification of lignin, which depends on polymer origin and the modification conditions. Finally, future outlooks on modified lignins as useful materials on their own and as prospective biofillers for environmentally friendly polymeric materials are presented.

Abstract:Polymer materials are widely used in modern industry and life, and their performance and functional requirements are constantly increasing. Lignin, as a rich renewable resource in nature, a byproduct of the pulp and paper making and bioenzymatic processes, is a natural polymer material with good stability, and mechanical and chemical properties. Therefore, the application of lignin in polymer materials can improve the strength, stiffness, heat resistance, weather resistance and chemical resistance of the materials, providing a new way of application of polymer materials. However, the structure and chemical properties of lignin isolated during industrial production have changed considerably, and its use as a polymer is associated with problems of dispersion and poor compatibility, so it is necessary to modify lignin to improve compatibility with natural or synthetic polymers and to expand the range of lignin applications. Starting from the structure and properties of lignin, this paper explores a variety of lignin material modification methods, such as chemical reactions and physical blending to compound lignin with phenolic resins, polyurethane, polyolefins and other materials. Applications of lignin composite functional materials in new functional materials, energy storage materials, environmental protection and medicine are also presented, which are of great importance in promoting high performance and sustainable development of lignin materials.

Abstract:By increasing the environmental concerns and depletion of petroleum resources, bio-based resins have gained interest. Recently, lignin, vanillin (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde), and divanillin (6,6′-dihydroxy-5,5′-dimethoxybiphenyl-3,3′-dicarbaldehyde)-based resins have attracted attention due to the low cost, environmental benefits, good thermal stability, excellent mechanical properties, and suitability for high-performance natural fiber composite applications. This review highlights the recent use of lignin, vanillin, and divanillin-based resins with natural fiber composites and their synthesized processes. Finally, discussions are made on the curing kinetics, mechanical properties, flame retardancy, and bio-based resins’ adhesion property.

Abstract:Lignin is the largest natural aromatic biopolymer, but usually treated as industrial biomass waste. The development of lignin/polymer biocomposites can promote the high value utilization of lignin and the greening of polymers. However, the weak interfacial interaction between industrial lignin and polymer induces poor compatibility and serious agglomeration in polymer owing to the strong intermolecular force of lignin. As such, it is extremely difficult to prepare high performance lignin/polymer biocomposites. Recently, we proposed the strategy of in situ construction of interfacial dynamic bonds in lignin/polymer composites. By taking advantage of the abundant oxygen-containing polar groups of lignin, we inserted dynamic bonding connection such as hydrogen bonds and coordination bonds into the interphase between lignin and the polymer matrix to improve the interfacial interactions. Meanwhile, the natural amphiphilic structure characteristics of lignin were utilized to construct the hierarchical nanophase separation structure in lignin/polymer composites. The persistent problems of poor dispersity and interfacial compatibility of lignin in the polymer matrix were effectively solved. The lignin-modified polymer composites achieved simultaneously enhanced strength and toughness. This concise review systematically summarized the recent research progress of our group toward building high-performance lignin/polymer biocomposites through the design of interfacial dynamic bonds (hydrogen bonds, coordination bonds, and dynamic covalent bonds) between lignin and different polymer systems (polar plastics, rubber, polyurethane, hydrogels, and other polymers). Finally, the future development direction, main challenges, and potential solutions of lignin application in polymers were presented.

Abstract:The demand for biodegradable materials across various industries has recently surged due to environmental concerns and the need for the adoption of renewable materials. In this context, lignin has emerged as a promising alternative, garnering significant attention as a biogenic resource that endows functional properties. This is primarily ascribed to its remarkable origin and structure that explains lignin's capacity to bind other molecules, reinforce composites, act as an antioxidant, and endow antimicrobial effects. This review summarizes recent advances in lignin-based composites, with particular emphasis on innovative methods for modifying lignin into micro and nanostructures and evaluating their functional contribution. Indeed, lignin-based composites can be tailored for superior physicomechanical characteristics, biodegradability, and surface properties, thereby making them suitable for applications beyond typical, for instance, in ecofriendly adhesives and advanced barrier technologies. Herein, we provide a comprehensive overview of the latest progress in the field of lignin utilization in emerging composite materials.

Abstract:Based on literatures, a review on the studies of the blends of lignin with different synthetic polymers was made and of which the miscibility, the role of H-bond and its effect on miscibility have been specially focused on. According to the properties of lignin, its effect on blend, e.g. the crystallization, thermal and photo stability, and anti-oxidization have been analyzed. To compare literature reported data, a further analysis of different functional groups remained by those synthetic polymers and chemical environment on the miscibility of blends and the role of lignin on the crystal area of polymers was presented. Meanwhile, the immiscibility of lignin- polymer blends and the type of lignin, the molecular weight as well as distribution were also discussed and reviewed.

Abstract:After cellulose, lignin is the most commonly used natural polymer in green biomaterials. Pulp and paper mills and emerging cellulosic biorefineries are the main sources of technical lignin. However, only 2–5% of lignin has been converted into biomaterials. Making lignin-based polymer biocomposites to replace petroleum-based composites has piqued the interest of many researchers worldwide due to the positive environmental impact of traditional composites over time. In composite development, lignin is being used as a filler in commercial polymers to improve biodegradability and possibly lower production costs. As a natural polymer, lignin may have different properties depending on the isolation method and source, affecting polymer-based composites. The application has been affected by the characteristics of lignin and the uniform distribution of lignin in polymers. The review’s goal was to provide an overview of technical lignin extraction, properties, and its potential appropriate utilization. It was also planned to revisit the lignin-based composites’ preparation procedure as well as their composite characteristics. Solvent casting and extrusion methods are used to fabricate lignin from polymeric matrices such as polypropylene, epoxy, polyvinyl alcohol, polylactic acid, starch, wood fiber, natural rubber, and chitosan. Packaging, biomedical materials, automotive, advanced biocomposites, flame retardant, and other applications for lignin-based composites has existed. As a result, the technology is still being refined to increase the performance of lignin-based biocomposites in several applications. This review could assist explain lignin’s position as a composite additive, which could lead to more efficient processing and application strategies.

Abstract:Lignin, a natural amorphous three-dimensional aromatic polymer, is investigated as an appropriate filler for biocomposites. The chemical modification of firsthand lignin is an effective pathway to accomplish acetoacetate functional groups replacing polar hydroxyl (-OH) groups, which capacitates lignin to possess better miscibility with poly(lactic acid) (PLA), compared with acidified lignin (Ac-lignin) and butyric lignin (By-lignin), for the sake of blending with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) to constitute a new biopolymer based composites. Generally speaking, the characterization of all PLA composites has been performed taking advantage of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic Mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), rheological analysis, and tensile test. Visibly, it is significant to highlight that the existence of acetoacetate functional groups enhances the miscibility, interfacial compatibility, and interface interaction between acetoacetate lignin (At-lignin) and PLA. Identical conclusions were obtained in this study where PLA/At-lignin biocomposites furthest maintain the tensile strength of pure PLA.

Recent Patents on Mechanical Engineering

Abstract:Background: With the improvement of environment protection awareness, human beings have gradually become aware of that the plastic products, waste are harmful to the human living environment. Therefore, research and application of biodegradable materials that do not rely on petroleum resources have become hot topics. Researchers have accelerated the development and promotion of plant fiber because they are good flexibility, relatively rough surface and biodegradable. Objective: The development of plant fiber composites is reviewed, including composition ratio, interfacial modification, processing technology, and the effects of these technologies on the properties of plant fiber composites. Methods: The paper reviews various patents and research developments about plant fiber composite materials. It also analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of various patents and technologies from the aspects of biodegradable ability, mechanical properties, dispersing performance, processing properties, cost, and so on. Results: The component proportion, interface modification, and processing technology of plant fiber composite materials are prospected to improve the quality and application of the plant fiber composite materials in the future development. Conclusion: The considerable attention has been paid on the technology of biodegradable plant fiber composite. The recent patents and technologies have shown us a wider application in biodegradable plant fiber composite. The problems how to improve the mechanical properties of plant fibers, the dispersion properties of plant fibers and resins, and the processing properties of composite materials, will need more and more methods and equipment to solve or simplify.
Effect of lignin on the structure-property behavior of metal-coordinated and chemically crosslinked ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer composites

Abstract:The efficient development and utilization of green biomass-based macromolecule engineering materials are essential for the sustainable development of human civilization. In this study, lignin-based ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer (EPDM) composites with excellent mechanical performance were fabricated using a simple method. The effects of water-insoluble enzymatically hydrolyzed lignin (EL) and alkali lignin (KL) on the mechanical performance of the composites were investigated separately. The results showed that the tensile strength of EPDM reinforced with KL and EL increased to 24.5 MPa and 22.1 MPa, respectively, surpassing that of the carbon black (CB)-reinforced EPDM. After 72 h of thermo-oxidative aging, the retention rates of the tensile strength and elongation at break in the lignin-reinforced EPDM were much better than those formed with pure CB, indicating that lignin significantly improved the thermo-oxidative aging resistance of the composites. In summary, the Zn2+ coordination bonds formed between the interface of EPDM and lignin in lignin/CB/EPDM ternary composites effectively improved the mechanical performance and aging resistance of the composites. This study has significant implications for enhancing the utilization of lignin and green functional polymer materials.
Development of PLA/Lignin Bio-Composites Compatibilized by Ethylene Glycol Diglycidyl Ether and Poly (ethylene glycol) Diglycidyl Ether

Abstract:Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) is a promising green substitute for conventional petroleum-based plastics in a variety of applications. However, the wide application of PLA is still limited by its disadvantages, such as slow crystallization rate, inadequate gas barrier, thermal degradation, etc. In this study, lignin (1, 3, 5 PHR) was incorporated into PLA to improve the thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties of PLA. Two low-viscosity epoxy resins, ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) and poly (ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDE), were used as compatibilizers to enhance the performance of the composites. The addition of lignin improved the onset degradation temperature of PLA by up to 15 °C, increased PLA crystallinity, improved PLA tensile strength by approximately 15%, and improved PLA oxygen barrier by up to 58.3%. The addition of EGDE and PEGDE both decreased the glass transition, crystallization, and melting temperatures of the PLA/lignin composites, suggesting their compatabilizing and plasticizing effects, which contributed to improved oxygen barrier properties of the PLA/lignin composites. The developed PLA/lignin composites with improved thermal, mechanical, and gas barrier properties can potentially be used for green packaging applications.

Abstract:During the evolutionary development of plants, lignin emerged, engaging in a remarkable synergy with polysaccharides. This union enhanced the adaptability of plants to harsh environments through a complementary relationship. Lignin addresses the inherent limitations of polysaccharides, including hydrophobicity, ultraviolet (UV) resistance, and environmental stability. Building on this natural paradigm, we explore the development of artificial lignin/polysaccharide composites (LPCs), encompassing a range of combinations such as lignin/cellulose, lignin/chitosan, lignin/starch, lignin/alginate, lignin/agarose, and lignin/carrageen composites. This review provides a comprehensive examination of lignin's origins, understanding, properties, and the advancements and challenges faced by polysaccharides. We detail the fabrication of LPCs from lignin and natural polysaccharides, discussing their construction strategies, properties, and potential applications. Furthermore, we highlight existing challenges and future opportunities for the improved utilization of LPCs. Our aim is to catalyze the effective use of lignin and natural polysaccharides, offering fresh insights for the innovation of next-regeneration LPCs.

Abstract:The Brief Overview of Bamboo Fiber Reinforced Polymeric Composites. Characterized by rapid maturation, short growth cycles, and high strength and toughness, bamboo can be compounded with polymers to produce bamboofiber reinforced polymeric composites (BFRPCs). These composites exhibit corrosion resistance comparable to traditional materials such as glass fiber and carbon fiber composites. Additionally, they possess features like low density, high strength, degradability, and environmental friendliness, with low production costs and strong industrial applicability. This paper reviews the accomplishments in BFRPCs and provides an overview of the production processes for BFRPCs. Furthermore, it summarizes the research status of mechanical properties, moisture absorption characteristics, interface performance, and flame retardancy of these composites. The current issues with BFRPCs were analyzed. Finally, the paper explores future research directions and potential applications of BFRPCs. Highlights The performance studies on BFRPCs are comprehensively presented. Composite processing of BFPRCs is reviewed. Pros and cons of various types of BFRPCs are analyzed. Overview of the applications of BFRPCs in various domains is presented. Future trends and challenges of BFRPCs are introduced.

Abstract:In recent years, lignin nanoparticles (LNP) have gained tremendous and deep research in the field of functional composites because of their many advantages such as abundant, non-toxic, affordable, green, eco-friendly, biodegradable and biocompatible features along with antioxidant, antibacterial and UV-absorbing abilities. At present, numerous pioneering works have been devoted to the development of LNP-based composites with multiple functions. Herein, we comprehensively reviewed the latest research progress correlated with LNP-filled functional composites. This overview focused on the application of LNP as reinforcement, crosslinker, UV-protectant, antioxidant, antimicrobial and adhesive agents for functional composites. Additionally, the challenges and future outlooks for further exploiting and utilization of LNP in the functional composites were discussed.

Abstract:Starch/ poly(lactic acid) composite is such a potential biodegradable composite with great expectation for its excellent mechanical properties and competitive price to petroleum–based plastic.This paper focuses on status of biodegradable plastics and the research progress on starch/poly(lactic acid) and their composites,and gives a figure of the trend of technology development and industrialization on these bio-based composites.

Abstract:The study presents the preparation of novel biocomposites based on different lignin fractions and polylactic acid (PLA). Based on the improvement of PLA mechanical properties, we proposed a process to assemble a series of lignin samples and PLA matrix using melt blending to investigate the effects on PLA properties from the perspective of the structure and molecular weight for lignin. The lignin was extracted from pine residue using deep eutectic solvent (DES) and was subjected to fractionation with ethanol and acetone as well as esterification modification with succinic anhydride (SAn). The treated lignin samples were used as additives, which not only improved the mechanical properties of PLA on the basis of retaining its thermal stability, but also granted excellent antimicrobial and biocompatibility properties. The results showed that the molecular weight of lignin was negatively correlated with the phenolic hydroxyl content, and the mechanical properties of the composites were also significantly affected by different molecular weights of lignin, indicating that the inhomogeneity of lignin affects its value-added utilization. The enhanced mechanical properties, antibacterial effect, and steady biocompatibility provide potential possibilities for lignin-based composites in biomedical applications.
