A National Survey on Some Obstetric Practices in Health Facilities in China

Abstract:Objective To survey some obstetric practices,such as pubic shaving,rectal examination, vaginal examination,enema,positions during labor,and partograph in health facilities so as to obtain baseline data for future actions.Methods A letter questionnaire was sent to 887 sample health facilities in 31 provinces,autonomous regions and municipalities.Midwifery practice data in year 2002 were collected and descriptive study was done.Results The proportion of pubic shaving per 100 vaginal deliveries was 61.8%.The proportion of rectal examination per 100 vaginal deliveries was 62.2% and that of vaginal examination was 65.4%.31.3% of the facilities performed enema for pregnant women.12.7% of the facilities allowed women's choice in position during their labor.65.6% of the facilities routinely adopted partograph.ConclusionThe appropriate midwifery practices can not be fully carried out and some unnecessary even harmful interventions such as pubic shaving,rectal examination,enema and so on are excessively applied.Therefore,a national regulation should be workup to standardize midwifery practice in health facilities imminently.
