Abstract:The transition metal atoms in the framework of molecular sieves are characterized by the UV resonance Raman spectroscopy. An UV laser line (244 nm) is chosen to excite the charge-transfer transition between the framework oxygen and transition metal atoms in TS-1, Fe-ZSM-5, V-MCM-41, etc. The new Raman bands at 490, 530 and 1125 cm−1 are observed for TS-1, and the bands at 515, 1017 and 1170 cm−1 are detected for Fe-ZSM-5. V-MCM-41 also gives a new Raman band at 1070 cm−1. The appearance of these Raman bands is due to resonance Raman effect since the laser line at 244 nm locates in UV-visible absorption of transition metal atoms in the framework. Therefore the characteristic Raman bands solely associated with Ti, Fe and V atoms in the framework are selectively enhanced by resonance Raman effect, and the transition metal atoms in the framework are definitely identified by the UV resonance Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:First-row transition metal containing silicalite zeolites are important oxidation catalysts. Special attention has been devoted to develop new systems with an uniform pore size distribution which would allow large molecules to reach the active sites inside the structure. In the present paper, a series of vanadium-containing mesoporous molecular sieves of the MCM-41 type have been synthesized, systematically varying the pore size and metal loading. The uniform mesoporous structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and physisorption. To obtain information on the local structure of incorporated vanadium, a series of vanadium model compounds with well-defined local symmetry were characterized, together with V−MCM-41, by UV Raman, DR UV−visible, 51V solid-state NMR, and X-ray absorption spectroscopies. The UV−visible absorption edge energy may be correlated with the domain size (local symmetry) represented by the average bond length. Abstract:A range of mesoporous vanadosilicate molecular sieves with the MCM-41 structure and the atomic ratio Si/V = 10-160 have been synthesized using vanadyl sulfate as the source of vanadium. The products were characterized by XRD and V-51 and Si-29 MAS NMR spectroscopy. The increase of the unit-cell parameter (monitored by XRD) and the decrease of the Q(3)/Q(4) ratio (determined from the Si-29 spectra) with increasing vanadium content indicate the incorporation of vanadium into the MCM-41 structure. In as-synthesized [Si,V]-MCM-41, vanadium is in an octahedral environment and is located mainly on the surface of the channels, The amount of octahedral vanadium decreases and tetrahedral V is increasingly created as the calcination temperature increases.

Abstract:The vibrational spectra of vanadium carbonyl cations of the form V(CO)(n)(+), where n = 1-7, were obtained via mass-selected infrared laser photodissociation spectroscopy in the carbonyl stretching region. The cations and their argon and neon "tagged" analogues were produced in a molecular beam via laser vaporization in a pulsed nozzle source. The relative intensities and frequency positions of the infrared bands observed provide distinctive patterns from which information on the coordination and spin states of these complexes can be obtained. Density functional theory is carried out in support of the experimental spectra. Infrared spectra obtained by experiment and predicted by theory provide evidence for a reduction in spin state as the ligand coordination number increases. The octahedral V(CO)(6)(+) complex is the fully coordinated experimental species. A single band at 2097 cm(-1) was observed for this complex red-shifted from the free CO vibration at 2143 cm(-1).

Abstract:ABSTRACT The optical property and the structural states of vanadium ions were studied by multiple spectra (UV-visible, IR, Raman, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)) in LAS glass and glass-ceramics. The color of glasses changed drastically from light yellow-green to claret during crystallization, the optical absorption in visible range is the characteristic absorption of V4+, and the variation of absorption region is mainly attributed to the change of vanadium ions' coordination polyhedron during crystallization process. The V4+ ions, formed by reduction of V5+ ions, existed as the VO2+ complex in octahedral coordination with a tetragonal compression with C4v symmetry. Additionally, the V4+ ions partially replaced Li+ and occupied tetrahedral sites in beta-quartz solid solution.

Abstract:A series of aluminophosphate materials without (UHM-1) and with variable amounts of vanadium (VUHM-1) have been synthesized in the presence of a cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium chloride and an organic base tetramethylammonium hydroxide. Powder X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis show that both UHM-1 and VUHM-1 with V/Al ratios up to 0.05 possess disordered arrays of tubular channels which mimic the hexagonal MCM-41 structure. The overall P/Al ratio is about half of the initial unity ratio in the gel mixture, especially for VUHM-1. This indicates incomplete condensation of phosphorus oxide and a non-ideal aluminophosphate framework; this seems associated with poorer thermal stability than microporous aluminophosphate and mesoporous aluminosilicate MCM-41. Electron spin resonance and diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible spectroscopies reveal that in as-synthesized VUHM-1 the vanadium exists as monoatomically dispersed square pyramidal VO2+ ions and as tetrahedral V5+ ions which are consistent with a framework location for the vanadium.
Comparative Study of the Vanadium Species in Vapo-5 and Vapso-5 Molecular Sieves

Abstract:By using XRD, TG-DTA, NMR, and UV resonance Raman spectroscopy, the nature and location of vanadium species between VAPO-5 and VAPSO-5 molecular sieves were comparatively studied. It was found that different vanadium species exist in VAPO-5 and VAPSO-5 molecular sieves. Polymerized vanadium oxides and bulk V2O5 crystallites are the main vanadium species in VAPO-5 molecular sieves. However, in VAPSO-5 molecular sieves, tetrahedrally coordinated vanadium species are dominant. Namely, most of the vanadium species in VAPO-5 exist outside the framework, whereas most of the vanadium species in VAPSO-5 are incorporated into the framework. The formation of framework vanadium in VAPSO-5 molecular sieves is found to be associated essentially with the presence of framework silicon atoms.

Abstract:Vanadium-oxygen species are very harmful to the environment and human health, and also some vanadium-oxygen species have good biological and biomedical effects to human beings. Thus, the study of vanadium-oxygen species is very significant. The types of V-O species are very complex. So far, however, the various structures of V-O species cannot be identified clearly. In this work, the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was used to study vanadium-oxygen species in aqueous solution directly. The SERS spectra with high enhancement factor (EF) and detail information were obtained by the enhancement substrates such as gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), Ag mirror, the Au-deposited Pt electrodes, and rough Au electrodes. The structures of vanadium-oxygen species in solutions with different concentration and pH had been well-characterized firstly by the combination of SERS experiments with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work will promote the basic study of the V-O species, and it is also a promotion for the SERS and analytical chemistry.
Correlation and surface effects in Vanadium Oxides

Abstract:Recent photoemission experiments have shown strong surface modifications in the spectra from vanadium oxides as (V,Cr)_2O_3 or (Sr,Ca)VO_3. The effective mass is enhanced at the surface and the coherent part of the surface spectrum is narrowed as compared to the bulk. The quasiparticle weight is more sensitive at the surface than in the bulk against bandwidth variations. We investigate these effects theoretically considering the single-band Hubbard model for a film geometry. A simplified dynamical mean-field scheme is used to calculate the main features of the interacting layer-dependent spectral function. It turns out that the experimentally confirmed effects are inherent properties of a system of strongly correlated electrons. The reduction of the weight and the variance of the coherent part of the surface spectrum can be traced back to the reduced surface coordination number. Surface correlation effects can be strongly amplified by changes of the hopping integrals at the surface.

Abstract:This review summarizes Raman scattering data for different stable and metastable phases of vanadium oxides. We analyze literature data on crystal structures existing in the binary vanadium‐oxygen system. If available, we combine these data with experimental Raman spectra and relations of vibrational modes with the atomic arrangements and motions in crystals. Further, we employ arc sputtering to produce vanadium oxide films, including α and β‐vanadium, V14O6, VO, V2O3, V3O5, several phases of VO2, V6O13, V3O7, and V2O5, as confirmed by X‐ray diffraction analysis. All the films are studied using Raman spectroscopy: low‐ and high‐temperature V3O5 and VOx (1.67 3O5 spectrum takes place along the phase transition occurring at approximately 140 °C. Moreover, we describe differences between the spectra of VO2 polymorphs produced without doping impurities, VO2 (M1), VO2 (M2), and VO2 (T). Finally, we analyze conflicting data on V7O16 and V3O7 and provide an explanation of the observed spectra. Overall, 21 spectra are identified for 53 known phases. Our work is aimed at laying the groundwork for easy identification of vanadium oxide phases in thin films, using Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:The bright blue minerals cavansite and pentagonite, a calcium vanadium silicate Ca(V(4+)O)Si(4)O(10)·4H(2)O, have been studied by UV-Visible, Raman and infrared spectroscopy. Cavansite shows an open porous structure with very small micron sized holes. Strong UV-Visible absorption bands are observed at around 403, 614 and 789 nm for cavansite and pentagonite. The Raman spectrum of cavansite is dominated by an intense band at 981cm(-1) and pentagonite by a band at 971 cm(-1) attributed to the stretching vibrations of (SiO(3))(n) units. Cavansite is characterised by two intense bands at 574 and 672 cm(-1) whereas pentagonite by a single band at 651 cm(-1). The Raman spectrum of cavansite in the hydroxyl stretching region shows bands at 3504, 3546, 3577, 3604 and 3654 cm(-1) whereas pentagonite is a single band at 3532 cm(-1). These bands are attributed to water coordinated to calcium and vanadium. XPS studies show that bond energy of oxygen in oxides is 530eV, and in hydroxides ∼531.5 eV and for water ∼533.5 eV. XPS studies show a strong peak at 531.5eV for cavansite, indicating some OH units in the structure of cavansite.

Abstract:Analysis of the available literature concerning Wadsley phases of vanadium oxides (VnO2n + 1) revealed that Raman studies of these materials are full of contradictions, misinterpretations, and low‐quality data. We produced all Wadsley phases by annealing amorphous oxide films in controllable atmosphere and carefully measured Raman spectra of the produced samples. Our investigations included temperature‐dependent measurements to study low‐temperature phase transitions in VO2 (B) and V6O13. We summarize the current knowledge on crystal structures, synthesis, applications, and Raman spectroscopy of Wadsley phases of vanadium oxide, including VO2 (B), V6O13, V4O9, V3O7, and V2O5. While these oxides have garnered significant attention for potential energy storage applications and have been studied for decades, there remains inconsistency in data regarding their characteristic Raman spectra. To address this, we synthesized a series of Wadsley phases by physical vapor deposition of amorphous vanadium oxide films and subsequent annealing in a controlled environment. X‐ray diffraction studies confirmed the formation of VO2 (B), V6O13, V4O9, and V3O7. We meticulously measured the room‐temperature Raman spectra of these phases, offering robust reference data for the easy identification of vanadium oxides in unknown samples. Finally, we studied low‐temperature phase transitions in VO2 (B) and V6O13.

Abstract:Nonlinear spectroscopy in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft x-ray spectral range offers the opportunity for element selective probing of ultrafast dynamics using core-valence transitions (Mukamel et al., Acc. Chem. Res. 42, 553 (2009)). We demonstrate a step on this path showing core-valence sensitivity in transient grating spectroscopy with EUV probing. We study the optically induced insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) of a VO2 film with EUV diffraction from the optically excited sample. The VO2 exhibits a change in the 3p-3d resonance of V accompanied by an acoustic response. Due to the broadband probing we are able to separate the two features.

Abstract:Abstract A combined UPS and XPS study was performed on a series of structurally related vanadium sulfides of the NiAs type. The valence band spectra show systematic variations with the metal to sulfur ratio (1.0 to 1.6) such as an increase in the density of states with increasing sulfur content. These findings are discussed using structural information and band structure calculations of VS at the linear Muffin-Tin orbital (LMTO) level. The core level data of S 2 p , S 2 s , and V 2 p exhibit much larger variations than expected from the valence band spectra indicating that the bonding interaction in the VS 6 octahedra vary with the elemental composition. The compounds contain a significant amount of dissolved atomic oxygen which forms oxides only after Ar ion bombardment. The presence of nonbonding oxygen was substantiated with XPS and IMR-MS thermal desorption spectroscopy. All data point to an alloy type electronic structure of these metalloid compounds resulting from a vanadium atom network with metallic contacts varying systematically in its topology with chemical composition.

Abstract:The optical/infrared properties of films of vanadium dioxide (VO2) and vanadium sesquioxide (V2O3) have been investigated via ellipsometry and near-normal incidence reflectance measurements from far infrared to ultraviolet frequencies. Significant changes occur in the optical conductivity of both VO2 and V2O3 across the metal-insulator transitions at least up to (and possibly beyond) 6 eV. We argue that such changes in optical conductivity and electronic spectral weight over a broad frequency range is evidence of the important role of electronic correlations to the metal-insulator transitions in both of these vanadium oxides. We observe a sharp optical transition with possible final state (exciton) effects in the insulating phase of VO2. This sharp optical transition occurs between narrow a1g bands that arise from the quasi-one-dimensional chains of vanadium dimers. Electronic correlations in the metallic phases of both VO2 and V2O3 lead to reduction of the kinetic energy of the charge carriers compared to band theory values, with paramagnetic metallic V2O3 showing evidence of stronger correlations compared to rutile metallic VO2.
Spectral Assignments in the Infrared Absorption Region and Anomalous Thermal Hysteresis in the Interband Electronic Transition of Vanadium Dioxide Films

Abstract:The metal-insulator transition (MIT) is of key importance for understanding the fundamental electronic interaction that determines the physical properties of vanadium dioxide (VO2) film. Here, the spectral slopes of transmittance and reflectance in the infrared absorption region (about 0.62-1.63 eV) and the interband electronic transitions for VO2 films with thicknesses of 27, 40 and 63 nm have been investigated. The potential applications of the spectral slopes were presented in detail. It is found that the variation of resistivity and transmittance increases with the spectral slopes of transmittance and reflectance. It is surprising that the resistivity of the VO2 film with a thickness of 27 nm is larger than that of the VO2 film with a thickness of 40 nm in the metal state. In addition, an anomalous counterclockwise thermal hysteresis with higher energy from the interband electronic transition was also found during the MIT process for the thinnest film. It is believed that this remarkable phenomenon could be related to the correlation effects in the rutile phase, which could lead to the splitting of the a1g band into Hubbard bands. The lower Hubbard band would result in an electronic transition blue-shift with the empty e band, which can explain the origin of the counterclockwise thermal hysteresis and the abnormal resistivity in the metal state.

Abstract:The geometric structure and bonding features of dinuclear vanadium-group transition metal carbonyl cation complexes in the form of VM(CO)n+ (n = 9–11, M = V, Nb, and Ta) are studied by infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in conjunction with density functional calculations. The homodinuclear V2(CO)9+ is characterized as a quartet structure with CS symmetry, featuring two side-on bridging carbonyls and an end-on semi-bridging carbonyl. In contrast, for the heterodinuclear VNb(CO)9+ and VTa(CO)9+, a C2V sextet isomer with a linear bridging carbonyl is determined to coexist with the lower-lying CS structure analogous to V2(CO)9+. Bonding analyses manifest that the detected VM(CO)9+ complexes featuring an (OC)6M–V(CO)3 pattern can be regarded as the reaction products of two stable metal carbonyl fragments, and indicate the presence of the M–V d-d covalent interaction in the CS structure of VM(CO)9+. In addition, it is demonstrated that the significant activation of the bridging carbonyls in the VM(CO)9+ complexes is due in large part to the diatomic cooperation of M–V, where the strong oxophilicity of vanadium is crucial to facilitate its binding to the oxygen end of the carbonyl groups. The results offer important insight into the structure and bonding of dinuclear vanadium-containing transition metal carbonyl cluster cations and provide inspiration for the design of active vanadium-based diatomic catalysts.

Orbital reformation with vanadium trimerization in $d^2$ triangular lattice LiVO$_2$ revealed by $^{51}$V NMR

Abstract:LiVO$_2$ is a model system of the valence bond solid (VBS) in $3d^2$ triangular lattice. The origin of the VBS formation has remained controversial. We investigate the microscopic mechanism by elucidating the $d$ orbital character via on-site $^{51}$V NMR measurements in a single crystal up to 550 K across a structural transition temperature $T_c$. The Knight shift, $K$, and nuclear quadrupole frequency, $\delta \nu$, show that the 3d orbital with local trigonal symmetry are reconstructed into a $d_{yz}d_{zx}$ orbital order below $T_c$. Together with the NMR spectra with three-fold rotational symmetry, we confirm a vanadium trimerization with $d$-$d$ $\sigma$ bonds. The Knight shift extracts the large Van-Vleck orbital susceptibility, $\chi^{\rm VV} = 3.6 \times 10^{-4}$, in a paramagnetic state above $T_c$, which is comparable to the spin susceptibility. The results suggest that orbitally induced Peierls transition in the proximity of the frustrated itinerant state is the dominant driving force of the trimerization transition.

Abstract:Some infrared-active phonons in VO2 films suppress their modulation performance in the infrared region. Al-doped VO2 films, due to transforming VO2 crystal into the M2 phase, promptly eliminate absorption peaks in far-IR/THz bands and present widely modulating properties. Furthermore, we found high-frequency shifts of phonon vibration modes in Raman spectra by Al doping, indicating the stronger V-O bonds as the evidence of VO2 crystalline modification. However, although the high-frequency shifts and peak broadening were observed in V-O-V bending modes, mid-infrared spectra as the other phonon characterization show that its resonances are less involved, which is different from the remarkable variation of THz phonons. We attribute the difference to the distinct origins of phonon vibrations. As Al doped into films, the group-rotational peaks were rapidly erased with crystalline deformation whereas the high-frequency bending modes only slightly changed.

Abstract:We performed a systematic study of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy in various manganese oxides and fluorides. Both Mn L-edges and ligand (O and F) K-edges are presented and compared with each other. Despite the distinct crystal structure and covalent/ionic nature in different systems, the Mn-L spectra fingerprint the Mn valence and spin states through spectral lineshape and energy position consistently and evidently. The clear O- and F- K pre-edge features in our high resolution spectra enable a quantitative definition of the molecular orbital diagram with different Mn valence. In addition, while the binding energy difference of the O-1s core electrons leads to a small shift of the O-K leading edges between trivalent and quadrivalent manganese oxides, a significant edge shift, with an order of magnitude larger in energy, was found between divalent and trivalent compounds, which is attributed to the spin exchange stabilization of half- filled 3d system. This shift is much enhanced in the ionic fluoride system. This work provides the spectroscopic foundation for further studies of complicated Mn compounds.
