Abstract:Nearly half of the global low latitudes are characterized by a monsoon climate. This paper first analyzes the global spatial distribution of the rate of climate variation based on precipitation data. Results show that the monsoon regions in Asia and West Africa, and to a lesser extent in Australia, have the highest rate of climate variation on all time scales. These variations are manifested as seasonal jumps, high interannual and interdecadal variabilities, and abrupt changes between climate regimes. The monsoon regions are covered by various types of ecosystems which account for a large portion of the global biomass. Further analyses of the variations of ecosystems in the Asian region and their relationships with the monsoon climate have shown that the spatial and temporal variabilities of ecosystems are characterized by their strong response to variations in monsoon rainfall, one of the major energy flows in terrestrial ecosystems. The high rate of variation in monsoon climate strongly influences variation in Asian ecosystems. Changes in Asian ecosystems seem to be mainly driven by variations in monsoon climate over various time scales. This observation has led to the proposal of ‘monsoon-driven ecosystems’ in Asia.

Abstract:The winter and summer monsoons in Southeast Asia are important but highly variable sources of rainfall. Current understanding of the winter monsoon is limited by conflicting proxy observations, resulting from the decoupling of regional atmospheric circulation patterns and local rainfall dynamics. These signals are difficult to decipher in paleoclimate reconstructions. Here, we present a winter monsoon speleothem record from Southeast Asia covering the Holocene and find that winter and summer rainfall changed synchronously, forced by changes in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. In contrast, regional atmospheric circulation shows an inverse relation between winter and summer controlled by seasonal insolation over the Northern Hemisphere. We show that disentangling the local and regional signal in paleoclimate reconstructions is crucial in understanding and projecting winter and summer monsoon variability in Southeast Asia.

Abstract:The Asian summer monsoon (ASM) is a vast climate system, whose variability is critical to the livelihoods of billions of people across the Asian continent. During the past half-century, much progress has been made in understanding variations on a wide range of timescales, yet several significant issues remain unresolved. Of note are two long-standing problems concerning orbital-scale variations of the ASM. (1) Chinese loess magnetic susceptibility records show a persistent glacial-interglacial dominated ~100 kyr (thousand years) periodicity, while the cave oxygen-isotope (δ18O) records reveal periodicity in an almost pure precession band (~20 kyr periodicity)—the “Chinese 100 kyr problem”. (2) ASM records from the Arabian Sea and other oceans surrounding the Asian continent show a significant lag of 8–10 kyr to Northern Hemisphere summer insolation (NHSI), whereas the Asian cave δ18O records follow NHSI without a significant lag—a discrepancy termed the “sea-land precession-phase paradox”. How can we reconcile these differences? Recent and more refined model simulations now provide spatial patterns of rainfall and wind across the precession cycle, revealing distinct regional divergences in the ASM domain, which can well explain a large portion of the disparities between the loess, marine, and cave proxy records. Overall, we also find that the loess, marine, and cave records are indeed complementary rather than incompatible, with each record preferentially describing a certain aspect of ASM dynamics. Our study provides new insight into the understanding of different hydroclimatic proxies and largely reconciles the “Chinese 100 kyr problem“ and “sea-land precession-phase paradox”.

Abstract:The centennial-scale variation of the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) circulation has a long-term impact on regional ecosystems, agriculture and water resources. However, the feature and underlying mechanism of the centennial-scale variation in the monsoon system are not well-understood, largely due to the limited meteorological instrumental observation. This study concurrently harnesses the outcomes of both climate proxy records and climate model simulations to analyze century-scale fluctuations in the EASM. Our study reveals a significant negative correlation between the EASM and Northern Hemisphere (NH) temperatures during the past millennium, followed by an opposing trend in 20th century. On the contrary, projections under the RCP8.5 scenario indicate a synchronous rise in both EASM intensity and temperatures in the 21st century. The fluctuating relationship between temperatures and EASM is attributed to the internal variability in climate system. Spatially, we found that the main modes of precipitation in Eastern China during the pre-instrumental period are the dipole mode or the monopole mode, while a shift in the dominant mode of precipitation over Eastern China from the dipole mode during the Current Warm Period (20th century) to the monopole mode in the future (21st century), modulated by sea surface temperature anomalies. These insights into the centennial variation of the EASM, both temporally and spatially, are critical for enhancing predictive models and formulating monsoonal climate adaptation strategies.
Evolution of the Ocean Monsoon Regions over the Past 250 Million Years

Abstract:A set of deep-time climate simulations each 10Ma years from 250Ma to PI are conducted by using the NCAR-CESM1.2, for understanding the evolution of the ocean monsoon regions driven by tectonic dynamics over the past 250 million years and exploring its variation mechanisms. In recent years, scientists have proposed the concept of a global monsoon system, which includes not only typical monsoon regions (such as the African monsoon region and South Asian monsoon region), but also the atypical Northwest Pacific Ocean monsoon region. Research on the ocean monsoon is very limited, especially in the field of paleoclimate. The results in this paper show that the horizontal gradients of the thickness of the ocean mixed layer may be more important for the formation of the ocean monsoon than land-sea thermal contrast, which is confirmed by the aquaplanet simulations with various gradients of the ocean mixed-layer thickness. Near the Pacific monsoon region in the northern hemisphere, the thickness of the ocean mixed layer has obvious meridional and zonal gradients, which will correspond to the meridional and zonal thermal contrasts. In addition, there are obvious seasonal reversals in the gradients of the ocean mixed-layer thickness in summer and winter, and the corresponding longitudinal and zonal thermal contrast produce seasonal reversals. Over the past 250 million years, the thickness of the ocean mixed layer on the east side of the Pacific Ocean Basin in the Northern Hemisphere has deepened, and the corresponding ocean monsoon area on the east side of the Pacific Ocean has decreased. The changes in the thickness of the ocean mixed layer are closely related to the changes in the surface wind field. Examining the changes in the atmospheric circulations, we find that the Pacific subtropical high strengthens and extends from east to the west bank of the ocean basin, where the atmospheric low-level anticyclonic circulation causes the ocean surface layer to converge and sink and thus causes the ocean mixed layer to deepen. The changes in the Pacific subtropical high are related to changes in the continental monsoon region. Since the 170Ma, the Pangea supercontinent splits up, causing the supercontinent's inland water vapor to increase, the land monsoon area to increase, and the ocean monsoon area to decrease. According to the "monsoon-desert mechanism" of Rodwell and Hoskins, we can understand the relationship between the strengthening of land monsoon condensation heating and the formation of subtropical high over the western ocean.

Abstract:Studies of the multi-scale climate variability of the Asian monsoon are essential to an advanced understanding of the physical processes of the global climate system. In this paper, the progress achieved in this field is systematically reviewed, with a focus on the past several years. The achievements are summarized into the following topics: (1) the onset of the South China Sea summer monsoon; (2) the East Asian summer monsoon; (3) the East Asian winter monsoon; and (4) the Indian summer monsoon. Specifically, new results are highlighted, including the advanced or delayed local monsoon onset tending to be synchronized over the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Indochina Peninsula, and South China Sea; the basic features of the record-breaking mei-yu in 2020, which have been extensively investigated with an emphasis on the role of multi-scale processes; the recovery of the East Asian winter monsoon intensity after the early 2000s in the presence of continuing greenhouse gas emissions, which is believed to have been dominated by internal climate variability (mostly the Arctic Oscillation); and the accelerated warming over South Asia, which exceeded the tropical Indian Ocean warming, is considered to be the main driver of the Indian summer monsoon rainfall recovery since 1999. A brief summary is provided in the final section along with some further discussion on future research directions regarding our understanding of the Asian monsoon variability.

Abstract:This paper investigates the seasonal march of the summer monsoon through several different sub-divisions of the Asian monsoon region. Five data sets, the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) Merged Analysis of Precipitation (CMAP), the upper-tropospheric water vapour band Brightness Temperature (BT), the Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR), the lower tropospheric wind and Korean daily rainfall for 1980-1995, are used.Analysis shows that the largest area of deep convection in the global atmosphere is located over the tropical Indian Ocean-equatorial western Pacific; its centre being positioned 110 degrees E along the equator in boreal winter and then moves northwestward to 80 degrees E at 5 degrees N in late July. In late April, the area of deep convection first extends northward into the Indo-China Peninsula (ICP). In mid-May it abruptly covers over the central South China Sea (SCS) region. After the onset of SCS monsoon, deep convection starts to develop northwrard along the eastern coast of China, East Tibet Plateau (ETP) and Indian sub-continent, simultaneously. Based on the analysis of BT and lower-tropospheric circulation, Asian summer monsoon can be divided into six inter-linked sub-regional monsoons. They are Indo-China Peninsula monsoon, SCS monsoon, South Asian (Indian) monsoon, ETP monsoon, East Asian (south China, lower Yangtze River and Japan) monsoon and Northeast Asian (north China and Korea) monsoon. In seasonal course, their onset periods take place in late April-mid-May, mid-May, mid-May-late July, mid-May-early June, mid-May-late June and late June-mid-July, respectively. Abstract:<p>The ocean plays a crucial role in the global and regional climate. Many regional monsoon climates are interlinked by ocean currents and sea surface temperature (SST). The climate link between the East Asian and North American continent has been proposed and verified by many studies. A widely accepted hypothesis is that the precipitation of the monsoon marginal zone is strongly affected by the monsoon intensity. However, our rigorous test does not support a causal relation between precipitation in the monsoon marginal zone and summer monsoon intensity. Here we present systematic analysis with modern observation and simulation datasets, the Holocene paleoclimatic records and simulations from the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and North American summer monsoon (NASM) marginal zone to verify the relation between precipitation in the monsoon marginal zone and the ocean. Our results suggest that precipitation of the EASM and NASM marginal zone is affected by the Pacific SST and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) rather than the monsoon intensity. In particular, the impacts of SST lead to synchronous variations in the EASM and NASM marginal zone. With the global warming and increasing ENSO events, precipitation in the monsoon marginal zone, which locates in semi-arid regions, would reduce, resulting in an expansion of the semi-arid region.</p>

Abstract:Abstract This paper examines the structure of the summer monsoon over the Indian and western Pacific Oceans by analyzing the surface wind data from marine data sets for the period of 1860 to 1970. It is found that the southern edge of the huge monsoon low has three low-pressure troughs over the eastern edges of Africa, India, and the Indo-China peninsula. To the east of each trough is a broad region of intensified wind flow, with three branches in the western Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and the South China Sea, respectively. We call this the “branching phenomenon of the SW-monsoon.” Each of these branches has its own characteristics, and these influence the rainfall pattern in South Asia. This is verified by the observed distribution of precipitation, which has maximum precipitation over the west coast of each peninsula. Abstract:Located in a monsoon domain, East Asia suffers devastating natural hazards induced by anomalous monsoon behaviors. East Asian monsoon (EAM) research has traditionally been a high priority for the Chinese climate community and is particularly challenging in a changing climate where the global mean temperature has been rising. Recent advances in studies of the variabilities and mechanisms of the EAM are reviewed in this paper, focusing on the interannual to interdecadal time scales. Some new results have been achieved in understanding the behaviors of the EAM, such as the evolution of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM), including both its onset and withdrawal over the South China Sea, the changes in the northern boundary activity of the EASM, or the transitional climate zone in East Asia, and the cycle of the EASM and the East Asian winter monsoon and their linkages. In addition, understanding of the mechanism of the EAM variability has improved in several aspects, including the impacts of different types of ENSO on the EAM, the impacts from the Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean, and the roles of mid- to high-latitude processes. Finally, some scientific issues regarding our understanding of the EAM are proposed for future investigation.

Abstract:The Asian monsoon influences the lives of more than a third of the world's population, and understanding its spatial and temporal variability is fundamental to sustainable development. The complex dynamics of this climatic system are therefore of broad scientific and societal interest. In this virtual special issue (VSI), we present 19 papers dealing with the Asian monsoon since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, ∼21 kyr BP), with a focus on understanding variability and forcing mechanisms. Findings use recently developed quantitative reconstructions combined with numerical simulations, and present novel insights as follows: (1) analyses of comprehensive datasets of pollen, diatom, brGDGTs, oxygen and hydrogen isotopes and frequency magnetic susceptibility, as well as an innovative algorithm model for the lake energy-water balance, improve the reliability of quantitative reconstructions of Asian monsoon climate variations; (2) studies of quantitative climate parameters in central East Asia show that mean annual temperature (MAT) was ∼5 °C (or ∼ 7.9 °C using brGDGTs) lower during the LGM, ∼1.5 °C (±41% using brGDGTs) higher around the Holocene thermal optimum (HO) and mean annual precipitation (MAP) varied between 30 and 150% with marked seasonality during 8–5 ka; (3) dynamical downscaling palaeoclimatic simulations improve the accuracy of past monsoon variations, revealing strong variability in monsoon precipitation across the LGM and HO. The holistic study of Asian monsoon variations at orbital to centennial timescales in these VSI papers presents reliable observations of monsoon variability and its driving mechanisms, providing high-resolution quantitative paleoclimate reconstructions that fill existing gaps in spatial coverage, as well as offering an improved understanding, thorough numerical simulation, of coupled sea-level change and vegetation feedbacks.

Abstract:This study investigates possible trends in several large scale indices that describe the Asian summer monsoon. Results from recent atmospheric general circulation experiments are used to provide clues as to how the monsoon might be changing due to the effects of global warming. Interestingly, this study has found that the large-scale wind shear monsoon indices have been decreasing at a rate of 0.1-0.3% per year (based on NCEP/CAR reanalysis 1958-98) in quantitative agreement with recent results from doubled CO2 simulations made using several state-of-the-art climate models. Nevertheless, despite the weakening of the monsoon circulation, all-India rainfall shows no clear trend in either the model results or in the observation reanalysis from 1958-98. Multiple regression is used to separate out the "dynamical" contribution from the observed all-India rainfall index, and a clear increasing trend then emerges in the "non-dynamical" residual. A simple dimensionless Multivariate Monsoon Index (MMI) is proposed that could be of use in monitoring global warming changes in the monsoon.

Abstract:Increasing lines of evidence question the homogenous response of Asian Summer Monsoon (ASM) precipitation patterns, requiring rethinking of the forcing mechanisms. Here we show a ~15,000‐yr quantitative precipitation history based on well‐dated lake levels at Lake Chenghai (LC), subtropical China. Lake levels and the inferred precipitation were high during the Bølling‐Allerød, early and late Holocene, but low during the middle Holocene. The orbital scale precipitation trend is out of phase with boreal summer insolation, the later has been widely suggested as the driver of ASM precipitation. LC long term lake levels are synchronous with trends in tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures (SST), the related zonal SST gradients, and interhemispheric temperature gradients. We propose that changes in either the interhemispheric or zonal Pacific temperature gradients modulate the intensity and location of the western Pacific subtropical high, which is juxtaposed on the ASM, leading to heterogeneous hydroclimatic conditions over subtropical East Asia.

Abstract:Abstract Previous studies on the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) onset mainly focused on each monsoon subsystem. Mainly based on the monthly mean rainfall and low-level winds in May, this study investigated the dominant onset mode from the perspective of the entire tropical ASM region, which reveals the coherent features among the regional-scale onsets. The results of multivariate empirical orthogonal function (MV-EOF) analysis indicate that the MV-EOF1 presents reduced rainfall and anomalous low-level easterly winds at 850 hPa over the tropical ASM region in May during its positive phase. The corresponding principal component (PC1) is highly correlated with the local monsoon onset dates over the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, the Indo-China Peninsula, and the South China Sea, where the mean monsoon onsets occur in May. The only exception is the Indian subcontinent, where the mean monsoon onsets occur in June. The results indicate that the leading mode captures the synchronized variation of monsoon onset over most Asian monsoon subsystems, which exhibits remarkable interannual and interdecadal changes. The factors that modulate the coherent variation of the tropical ASM onset are further examined. The simultaneously delayed ASM onset tends to occur during the easterly phase of the 30–80-day oscillation, the decaying phase of El Niño, and the positive phase of Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO). The 30–80-day oscillation serves as a background condition for the synchronized delayed or advanced ASM onset. El Niño–related sea surface temperature anomalies modulate the tropical ASM onset mode by modulating the tropical Walker circulation and inducing an atmospheric Rossby wave response. The PDO affects the tropical ASM onset mode mainly via the equatorial Rossby wave response and the extratropical Rossby wave train.

Signals of Interannual and Interdecadal Variability of Air‐sea Interaction in the Basin‐wide Indian Ocean

Abstract:Many climatologists are concerned with the variability of air-sea interactions. In this paper, signals of interannual and interdecadal variability of air-sea interactions in the southern subtropical Indian Ocean (SSIO) have been extracted from both monthly sea surface temperatures (SST) and monthly surface winds and compared to air-sea interactions of the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO). Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) expansion has been used in the analysis of observed sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) over the basin-wide Indian Ocean (35degreesS to 15degreesN, 30degreesE to 120degreesE) for 1950-1998. The results show that another dipole structure, with centres in the south-western subtropics of the ocean and near Australia, is different from the TIO dipole mode in several aspects. The SSIO dipole mode reflects internal variations of the Indian Ocean, exhibiting obvious interannual and interdecadal changes. The variability of this independent SSTA mode, which is represented by a dipole mode index (DMI), is strongly connected with the air-sea coupling through monsoon precipitation, wind field, and heat flux changes. Examining the wind fields correlated with the SSIO SSTA DMI, an oscillation in the meridional surface wind or the wind DMI is also defined and analyzed. Composite results of wind fields from extreme years and anomalous periods of the SSIO SSTA DMI show that interannual and interdecadal air-sea interactions are evident in the Indian Ocean and are connected with the activity of the east Asian, the south Asian, the African, and the Australian monsoons.
Impact of the Indian Ocean SST Basin Mode on the Asian Summer Monsoon

Abstract:Following an El Niño event, a basin‐wide warming takes place over the tropical Indian Ocean, peaks in late boreal winter and early spring, and persists through boreal summer. Our observational analysis suggests that this Indian Ocean warming induces robust climatic anomalies in the summer Indo‐West Pacific region, prolonging the El Niño's influence after tropical East Pacific sea surface temperature has returned to normal. In response to the Indian Ocean warming, precipitation increases over most of the basin, forcing a Matsuno‐Gill pattern in the upper troposphere with a strengthened South Asian high. Near the ground, the southwest monsoon intensifies over the Arabian Sea and weakens over the South China and Philippine Seas. An anomalous anticyclonic circulation forms over the subtropical Northwest Pacific, collocated with negative precipitation anomalies. All these anomaly patterns are reproduced in a coupled model simulation initialized with a warming in the tropical Indian Ocean mixed layer, indicating that the Indian Ocean warming is not just a passive response to El Niño but important for summer climate variability in the Indo‐West Pacific region. The implications for seasonal prediction are discussed.

Abstract:Abstract The land–sea thermal contrast is the foundation of the occurrences of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM). Using multiobservational datasets and model simulations covering the period 1960–2018, this study investigates the relationship that links the thermal contrast between the Asian landmass and the Indian Ocean (TCAI) to the ASM and evaluates the effects of the various driving factors that influence the TCAI in the climate models. The tropospheric TCAI is highly consistent with the ASM circulation, with a stronger ASM circulation and larger tropospheric TCAI before the 1970s and after the late 1990s than those seen from the 1970s to the late 1990s. The tropospheric TCAI is also closely related to rainfall over the Indian landmass and the south-flood–north-drought pattern over eastern China. Thus, the tropospheric TCAI reliably reflects the state of the ASM system and could be used as a new ASM index that directly describes the land–sea thermal contrast. The variation of the surface TCAI is highly consistent with that of the tropospheric TCAI. The model simulation suggests that the main drivers of the surface TCAI are anthropogenic forcing and the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO). Anthropogenic forcing dominates SAT variations over the Indian Ocean, whereas the AMO plays a major role in SAT variations over the Asian landmass, which introduces a large uncertainty into the projections of the ASM.

Abstract:Statistical analysis shows that the Indo-Pacific convection oscillation (IPCO) in boreal summer undergoes quasi-biennial variability, and is closely related to the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). Negative IPCO phases, which exhibit an enhanced convection over the north Indian Ocean and a suppressed convection over the western North Pacific, favor a weakened EASM and an increase of summer rainfall in the Yangtze River valley with the joint actions of the stronger than normal Ural and Okhotsk blocking highs and the subtropical western Pacific high, and vice versa. Abstract:This paper reviews briefly advances in recent research on monsoon by Chinese scholars, including primarily: (1) the establishment of various monsoon indices. In particular, the standardized dynamic seasonal variability index of the monsoon can delimit the geographical distribution of global monsoon systems and determine quantitatively the date of abrupt change in circulation. (2) The provision of three driving forces for the generation of monsoon. (3) The revelation of the heating-pump action of the Tibetan Plateau, which strengthens southerlies in the southern and southeastern periphery of the Plateau and results in a strong rainfall center from the northern Bay of Bengal (BOB) to the Plateau itself. (4) Clarification of the initial onset of the Asian Summer Monsoon (ASM) in the BOB east of 90°E, Indochina Peninsula (ICP) and the South China Sea, of which the rapid northward progression of tropical convection in the Sumatra and the rapid westward movement of the South Asia High to the Indochina Peninsula are the earliest signs. (5) The provision of an integrated mechanism for the onset of the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM), which emphasizes the integrated impact of sensible heat over Indian Peninsula, the warm advection of the Tibetan Plateau and the sensible heat and latent heat over the Indochina Peninsula on the one hand, and the seasonal phase-lock effect of the northward propagation of low frequency oscillation on the other. (6) The revelation of the “planetary-scale moisture transport large-value band” from the Southern Hemisphere through to the Asian monsoon region and into the North Pacific, which is converged by several large-scale moisture transport belts in the Asian-Australian monsoon regions and whose variation influences directly the temporal and spatial distribution of summer rainfall in China. (7) Presenting the features of the seasonal advance of the EASM, the propagation of intraseasonal oscillation, and their relationship with rainfall in China; indicating that the intraseasonal oscillation of the EASM propagates in the form of a wave-train along the coast and behaves as monsoon surge propagating northward. (8) Describing the interannual and interdecadal variation of Asian monsoon, revealing the factors affecting it, and possible mechanisms of the variation of Asian monsoon. An elementary outlook on the existing problems and future direction of monsoon research is also provided.
