A Perfect Shape Factor Corresponding States Principle for Pure Non-Polar and Polar Fluids

Abstract:In the two-parameter corresponding states principle(CSP), the critical compressibility factors of the fluid under study(called "alpha" fluid) and the reference fluid(called "o" fluid) must be identical. This is not generally observed in nature. To overcome this limitation, a perfect shape factor CSP is proposed in which the compressibility factors of "alpha" and "o" fluids are corresponded perfectly by introducing a new pressure shape factor delta. Using methane as the "o" fluid, the shape factors of many fluids are calculated from PVT properties at saturation state and the second virial coefficients. Models are also formulated for the shape factors with the assumption of phi is a function of temperature and volume while theta and delta are temperature dependent only. The models described the shape factors satisfactorily in whole region including vapor, liquid and their co-existing phases. The perfect shape factor CSP could be applied for both polar and non-polar fluids.

Abstract:We investigate an exact solution that describes the embedding of the four-dimensional (4D) perfect fluid in a five-dimensional (5D) Einstein spacetime. The effective metric of the 4D perfect fluid as a hypersurface with induced matter is equivalent to the Robertson–Walker metric of cosmology. This general solution shows interconnections among many 5D solutions, such as the solution in the braneworld scenario and the topological black hole with cosmological constant. If the 5D cosmological constant is positive, the metric periodically depends on the extra dimension. Thus we can compactify the extra dimension on S1 and study the phenomenological issues. We also generalize the metric ansatz to the higher-dimensional case, in which the 4D part of the Einstein equations can be reduced to a linear equation.

Abstract:Transport is one of the most important physical processes in all energy and length scales. Ideal gases and hydrodynamics are, respectively, two opposite limits of transport. Here, we present an unexpected mathematical connection between these two limits; that is, there exist situations that the solution to a class of interacting hydrodynamic equations with certain initial conditions can be exactly constructed from the dynamics of noninteracting ideal gases. We analytically provide three such examples. The first two examples focus on scale-invariant systems, which generalize fermionization to the hydrodynamics of strongly interacting systems, and determine specific initial conditions for perfect density oscillations in a harmonic trap. The third example recovers the dark soliton solution in a one-dimensional Bose condensate. The results can explain a recent puzzling experimental observation in ultracold atomic gases by the Paris group and make further predictions for future experiments. We envision that extensive examples of such an ideal-gas approach to hydrodynamics can be found by systematical numerical search, which can find broad applications in different problems in various subfields of physics.

Abstract:High pressure hydrogen storage has become an important transportation channel in areas of new energy development and utilization. Actual hydrogen demonstrations require the exploration of the physical and chemical properties in detail before the practical employment, which is completely different from the ideal gas under high pressure conditions. However, the existing real-gas state equations are not easy to use in calculation of high pressure hydrogen due to its complex behavior, and may lead to an unacceptable error. In this paper, a real-gas state equation of hydrogen in a simplified form is proposed. Compared with the NIST datum, the results obtained from this equation have a maximum error 1.1% and 3.8% respectively within the temperature ranges of 253K<T<393K and 173K<T<393K. Also, the proposed equation exhibits higher precision for the state parameters of hydrogen than existing models. Based on the real-gas state equation of hydrogen, formulas of thermodynamic properties which are necessary for solving the hydraulic and thermal aspects of gas transfer are also proposed.

Abstract:For the three-dimensional vacuum free boundary problem with physical singularity where the sound speed is $$C^{1/2}$$ -Hölder continuous across the vacuum boundary of the compressible Euler equations with damping, without any symmetry assumptions, we prove the almost global existence of smooth solutions when the initial data are small perturbations of the Barenblatt self-similar solutions to the corresponding porous media equations simplified via Darcy’s law. It is proved that if the initial perturbation is of the size of $$\varepsilon $$ , then the existing time for smooth solutions is at least of the order of $$\exp (\varepsilon ^{-2/3})$$ . The key issue for the analysis is the slow sub-linear growth of vacuum boundaries of the order of $$t^{1/(3\gamma -1)}$$ , where $$\gamma >1$$ is the adiabatic exponent for the gas. This is in sharp contrast to the currently available global-in-time existence theory of expanding solutions to the vacuum free boundary problems with physical singularity of compressible Euler equations for which the expanding rate of vacuum boundaries is linear. The results obtained in this paper are closely related to the open question in multiple dimensions framed by T.-P. Liu’s construction of particular solutions in 1996.
Effect of Denseness on the Similarity Between Micro and Rarefied Gas Flows

Abstract:The similarity conditions for micro and rarefied gas flows were analyzed based on Enskog's dense gas theory, by investigating the influence of gas densities on physical properties and flow parameters. The results show that if the influence of the gas density on physical properties and flow parameters has to be considered, the three dimensionless parameters (Kn, Re, and Ma), as a token of the similarity of micro and rarefied gas flows, can not simultaneously be equal correspondingly and that the micro and rarefied gas flows cannot be similar. The effect of dense gases on flow parameters and transport coefficients was studied, with the reference densities of different gases recomended combining with the results calculated using the dense gas theory with relative sound velocity diviations of 5% and relative pressure diviations of 0.5% based on thermodynamics analyses. If the gas density is larger than the reference value, the similarity between micro and rarefied gas flows breaks down.

Abstract:AbstractTo investigate the gas flow characteristics in tight porous media, a microscale lattice Boltzmann (LB) model with the regularization procedure is firstly adopted to simulate gas flow in three-dimensional (3D) digital rocks. A shale digital rock and a sandstone digital rock are reconstructed to study the effects of pressure, temperature and pore size on microscale gas flow. The simulation results show that because of the microscale effect in tight porous media, the apparent permeability is always higher than the intrinsic permeability and with the decrease of pressure or pore size, or with the increase of temperature, the difference between apparent permeability and intrinsic permeability increases. In addition, the Knudsen numbers under different conditions are calculated and the results show that gas flow characteristics in the digital rocks under different Knudsen numbers are quite different. With the increase of Knudsen number, gas flow in the digital rocks becomes more uniform and the effect of heterogeneity of the porous media on gas flow decreases. Finally, two commonly used apparent permeability calculation models are evaluated by the simulation results and the Klinkenberg model shows better accuracy. In addition, a better proportionality factor in Klinkenberg model is proposed according to the simulation results.

Abstract:Numerical simulations and theoretical investigations of fluid flow and heat transfer in porous/fluid-coupled areas have increased greatly in recent years. Scant research has concentrated on compressible gas flow in porous/fluid-coupled areas. First, an effective experiment method is proposed that can be used to accurately measure the permeability and inertial coefficient of porous media when gas flows at a high speed and high differential pressure. Using the method, the parameters of the non-Darcy flow through polyvinyl formal porous materials were tested in an actual experiment. Additionally, modified governing equations were used to solve the non-Darcy flow in porous media and turbulent flow in compressible air-coupled regimes. A method to determine the source terms for flow in porous media is presented. A robust numerical scheme was used to discretize the equations, and time-dependent boundary conditions were used to treat the boundary conditions. A detailed numerical and experimental investigation of compressible gas flow in a straight, round pipe with porous/fluid-coupled areas and backward- and forward-facing steps is given. The computational results were in strong agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:Positive density lower bound is one of the major obstacles toward large data theory for one dimensional isentropic compressible Euler equations, also known as p-system in Lagrangian coordinates. The explicit example first studied by Riemann shows that the lower bound of density can decay to zero as time goes to infinity of the order O(1/1+t), even when initial density is uniformly positive. In this paper, we establish a proof of the lower bound on density in its optimal order O(1/1+t) using a method of polygonal scheme.

Abstract:We study several schemes of first- or second-order accuracy based on kinetic approximations to solve pressureless and isothermal gas dynamics equations. The pressureless gas system is weakly hyperbolic, giving rise to the formation of density concentrations known as delta-shocks. For the isothermal gas system, the infinite speed of expansion into vacuum leads to zero timestep in the Godunov method based on exact Riemann solver. The schemes we consider are able to bypass these difficulties. They are proved to satisfy positiveness of density and discrete entropy inequalities, to capture the delta-shocks, and to treat data with vacuum.

Abstract:Barker and Henderson's Compressibility approximation is improved by assuming that the numbers of molecules in neighbour spherical shells are correlated. The results are better than those of Barker and 'Henderson's Macroscopic Compressibility Approximation(B-H Ma. C. Appro.) and Local Compressibility Approximation(B-H Lo. C. Appro.) specially at high densities. A simple and accurate analytic representation of square-well potential hard sphere perturbation theory is derived based upon this improvement. A new form of radial distribution function is proposed and applied. The theory is tested by calculating thermodynamic properties with the four-term truncated form, and the results are in good agreement with those of Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics computer simulation calculations.

Abstract:Simulating the nature of quantum fields in diverse spacetime backgrounds offers valuable insights for the fundamental comprehension of quantum mechanics and general relativity. Here we introduce a novel method for mapping the massless Dirac equation in 1+1D curved spacetime to a controllable quantum simulation model, applicable to various observers' perspectives. We perform numerical simulations of Simpson spacetime and calculate tunneling rates in Painleve and Schwarzschild coordinates, which align closely with theoretical predictions of Hawking radiation. Additionally, we show the transition of Simpson spacetime from a regular black hole to a wormhole as the parameter $"a > r_s"$. This method facilitates the study of spacetime from various coordinate perspectives (observers), providing deeper insights and understanding.

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the geometry of static perfect fluid space-time on compact manifolds with boundary. We use the generalized Reilly's formula to establish a geometric inequality for a static perfect fluid space-time involving the area of the boundary and its volume. Moreover, we obtain new boundary estimates for static perfect fluid space-time. One of the boundary estimates is obtained in terms of the Brown-York mass and another one related to the first eigenvalue of the Jacobi operator. In addition, we provide a new (simply connected) counterexample to the Cosmic no-hair conjecture for arbitrary dimension $n\geq 4.$

Abstract:Ideal gas is the most fundamental and simple system in thermodynamics, which has extensive applications in energy research and engineering. By reviewing the physical concept of ideal gas, it is found that the current understanding of ideal gas is still inappropriate and ambiguous, making it challenging to reveal the essential difference between ideal and real gases. Therefore, the macro and microscopic definitions and properties of ideal gas need to be reconceptualized. On the microscopic level, an ideal gas is a hypothetical collection of classical masses in irregular motion, which does not involve quantum mechanics; on the macroscopic level, any real gas cannot strictly obey the equation of state of ideal gas. Moreover, the heat capacity is a constant which should be an endogenous attribute of ideal gas model in order to unify the macroscopic and microscopic definitions of ideal gas. Finally, according to the law of heat capacity, the real gas can be divided into three categories: far-ideal, near-ideal, and quasi-ideal. This makes it easier to perform thermodynamic calculations with the assistance of ideal gas. Among them, the far-ideal gas heat capacity is a function of temperature and pressure, the near-ideal gas heat capacity is a single-valued function of temperature, and the quasi-ideal gas heat capacity is a constant.

Abstract:<p>Non-ideal gas flow behaviors are investigated by an Enskog-Vlasov type kinetic model considering the simultaneous effects of gas molecule size (volume exclusion) and long-range intermolecular attractions at the molecular level, which corresponds to the real gas equation of state at the macroscopic level. The Knudsen minimum is captured and a local Knudsen maximum may appear if gas molecule sizes or intermolecular attractive forces are considered. Although the Boltzmann equation is applicable to all the flow regimes in rarefied gas dynamics, it is invalid for a dense gas system, such as a tight or a shale gas reservoir. The Boltzmann-BGK model and the Enskog-BGK model overestimate and underestimate the mass flow rate of real gases, respectively, while Guo's model is more accurate to investigate real gas dynamics under tight confinements from a physical perspective. As the channel width increases or the solid fraction decreases, the impact of intermolecular interactions reduces. An anomalous slip regime occurs if both the volume exclusion and long-range intermolecular attraction are considered. Although the rarefaction effect is more prominent at larger Knudsen numbers, the flow at a smaller Knudsen number (a larger solid fraction or channel width) contributes to more practical gas production. The effect of long-range intermolecular attractions on gas dynamics decreases with temperature for real gases. This paper provides a novel insight into the real gas flow characteristics in a dense gas system, such as tight and shale gas reservoirs, from molecular natures of fluids.</p>

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to present a new numerical method for the prediction of natural convection in an infinite space. The procedure for the implementation of specified pressure boundary condition was proposed. The method for the recovery of boundary velocity from the specified boundary condition was given out. This method was applied for the simulation of natural convection from a cylinder in an infinite space. The result show good agreement with the experiment values and other numerical works。

Abstract:A novel analytical expression has been successfully developed, based on the thermodynamic gas-state equation and the concept of fluid conductance, to evaluate the pressure-balancing time in connecting two chambers of the space station via a dedicated gas valve. The influence of the initial conditions on the time evolution of the pressure difference of the two chambers can be predicted with high precision. The calculated results show that the pressure difference is proportional to the volumes and the initial pressure difference of the two chambers, but inversely proportional to the conductance of the connectivity structure between the two chambers. In addition, the pressure difference depends on 1/expt, (t is the elapsing time) approaching zero at a decreasing rate with the increase of time.
