Abstract:Social network analysis helps analysts to study the relationships among different nodes of a network and get valuable insights. The common output of social networks analysis is measuring the node's centrality and graphical visualization, which helps us to understand the degree and nature of relationships between different nodes of the network. Online Social networks produce data that provides tons of knowledge. But it is challenging to extract the data and get useful information through its analysis and visualization. Getting insights from small-scale networks is comparatively easy since they can be manually constructed and graphically represented. But it gets very time-consuming and hectic process as the network expands. Several social network analysis tools are available for this purpose. These tools also come with embedded techniques for analyzing social networks, reducing the overhead for the manual study of complex networks. The focus of this paper is on the analysis and comparison of popular tools that are often used by experts for analysis of large-scale data-sets. In this paper, we have addressed the various characteristics, functionalities, support comparison, strengths, and limitations of SNA tools based on a literature survey and expert opinions. This will help researchers and practitioners to choose a suitable tool for social network visualization and analysis.

Abstract:Due to the explosive rise of online social networks, social network analysis (SNA) has emerged as a significant academic field in recent years. Understanding and examining social relationships in networks through network analysis opens up numerous research avenues in sociology, literature, media, biology, computer science, sports, and more. Therefore, certain studies review and discuss some research verticals of SNA, such as viral marketing, information diffusion, clustering, link prediction, etc., to provide background knowledge and understanding. These studies still lack the SNA process, tools, and practical aspects in multidisciplinary applications. Inspired by these facts, we have discussed the background, process, tools, and application of SNA. First, we have presented a detailed description of the SNA process. Thereafter, we presented a comparative analysis of SNA tools and languages. Finally, we have discussed the various application corresponding to SNA research verticals.

Abstract:Social network based applications have experienced exponential growth in recent years. One of the reasons for this rise is that this application domain offers a particularly fertile place to test and develop the most advanced computational techniques to extract valuable information from the Web. The main contribution of this work is three-fold: (1) we provide an up-to-date literature review of the state of the art on social network analysis (SNA);(2) we propose a set of new metrics based on four essential features (or dimensions) in SNA; (3) finally, we provide a quantitative analysis of a set of popular SNA tools and frameworks. We have also performed a scientometric study to detect the most active research areas and application domains in this area. This work proposes the definition of four different dimensions, namely Pattern & Knowledge discovery, Information Fusion & Integration, Scalability, and Visualization, which are used to define a set of new metrics (termed degrees) in order to evaluate the different software tools and frameworks of SNA (a set of 20 SNA-software tools are analyzed and ranked following previous metrics). These dimensions, together with the defined degrees, allow evaluating and measure the maturity of social network technologies, looking for both a quantitative assessment of them, as to shed light to the challenges and future trends in this active area.

In addition, this paper introduces Tsinghua Social Network Analysis System (THSNAS) based on the above framework and shows results in terms of individual, group, event and holistic analysis. The analytical framework can provide theoretical and practical guidance for social network analysis, and has great value in terms of precision advertising, personalized information recommendation, and social management.

Abstract:As a mature paradigm of network analysis, social network analysis (SNA) is suitable for exploring complicated and interactive relationships in policy research and is of great significance to the innovation and development of public policy research. In this paper, 45 typical articles published in high-ranking journals in the field of public administration were analysed using co-word analysis and qualitative analysis. The application of SNA in public policy studies, including research methods, analytic tools, and basic concepts of network analysis, were systematically reviewed. UCINET software was used to visualize the knowledge network of research topics. The main research topics were classified into five categories: agenda setting, policy network, advocacy coalition, policy learning and diffusion, policy implementation. Finally, this article suggests that network analysis in public administration should be thoroughly re-examined; in particular, scholars should consider the benefits of SNA for public policy research. In the application of SNA to public policy research, it is necessary to broaden the study perspective and scope, further strengthen interdisciplinary theoretical interaction and theoretical innovation, and take advantage of big data and other new technological tools that can develop giant network analysis for public policy.

Abstract:Application of set pair analysis theory, the social network is as an identical–discrepancy–contrary system. Firstly, based on connection degree to descript the identical–discrepancy–contrary relation between vertices, considering the contribution of local features and the topological structure to the similarity between vertices, we define the similarity based on connection degree taking into account weight and clustering coefficient. The similarity can better describe network structure characteristics, overcome the under-estimating for the local similarity indices, and reduce the computational complexity of the global indices. Secondly, in order to apply the similarity to community discovery, combined with agglomerative hierarchical clustering algorithm, we propose a new community discovery algorithm Vertices Similarity First and Communities Mean (VSFCM), so that it is applicable to detect community structures in complex networks with any object that has similarity. Finally, the correctness and effectiveness of the similarity measurement and algorithm VSFCM are terrified through the experiments.

Abstract:The paper discusses the using patterns of Chinese SNS (social networking sites) including the most popular sites Sina Weibo, Renren, Kaixin, and Jiepang. In china, the domestic SNS dominates the market the same as the long domination of instant messaging tool, Tencent QQ, over Windows Live Messenger. These four SNS platforms encompass almost every aspect of Chinese social life. It is beneficial to investigate the multidimensional using patterns from the strong ties to weak ties with the distinctions of relationship management and tool using difference. A set of methods are designed to study the virtual publishings of SNS users and the real contexts that happened. By observing online the actions of the individuals, and then verifying the true contexts face to face, a series of patterns of SNS using are found. In the end, the authors also point out some design opportunities on mobile SNS.

Abstract:In the fast-growing scholarly big data background, social network technologies have recently aroused widespread attention in academia and industry. The concept of academic social networks is created precisely in the context of scholarly big data, which refers to the complicated academic network formed by academic entities and their relationships. There are a wealth of scholarly big data processing methods to analyze the rich structural types and related information about academic social networks. Nowadays, various academic data can be easily obtained, which makes it easier for us to analyze and study academic social networks. This study investigates the background, the current status, and trends of academic social networks. We first elaborate on the concept of academic social networks and related research background. Secondly, we analyze models based on nodes' types and timeliness. Thirdly, we review analytical methods, including relevant metrics, network properties, and available academic analysis tools. Furthermore, we sort out some key mining technologies for academic social networks. Finally, we systematically review representative research tasks in this domain from three levels: actor, relationship, and network. In addition, some academic social networking sites are presented. This survey concludes with the current challenges and open issues.

Abstract:Social Network Analysis mainly make use of graph theory and matrix technology to analyze relationship data, but relationships are various and different, the edges in the graph or the numerical values in the matrix are incapable of express the plentiful semantics that the relationships. In this paper, a social network analysis method based on ontology is proposed, which can describe the semantic of relationship. We create the relationship ontology, and illuminate the attribute and constraints of ontology, so the computer can know the relationship semantic and implement the reasoning.

Abstract:Social network analysis is the process of investigating social structures through the use of networks and graph theory. It combines a variety of techniques for analyzing the structure of social networks as well as theories that aim at explaining the underlying dynamics and patterns observed in these structures. It is an inherently interdisciplinary field which originally emerged from the fields of social psychology, statistics and graph theory. This talk will covers the theory of social network analysis, with a short introduction to graph theory and information spread. Then we will deep dive into Python code with NetworkX to get a better understanding of the network components, followed-up by constructing and implying social networks from real Pandas and textual datasets. Finally we will go over code examples of practical use-cases such as visualization with matplotlib, social-centrality analysis and influence maximization for information spread.

Abstract:With the increasing popularity of Internet, more and more developers are collaborating together for software development. During the collaboration, a lot of information related to software development, including communication and coordination information of developers, can be recorded in software repositories. The information can be employed to construct Developer Social Networks (DSNs) for facilitating tasks in software engineering. In this paper, we survey recent advances of DSNs and examine three fundamental steps of DSNs, namely construction, analysis, and applications. We summarize the state-of-the-art methods in the three steps and investigate the relationships among them. Furthermore, we discuss the main issues and point out the future opportunities in the study of DSNs.

Abstract:Today the World Wide Web is undergoing a subtle but profound shift to Web 2.0, to become more of a social web. The use of collaborative technologies such as blogs and social networking site (SNS) leads to instant online community in which people communicate rapidly and conveniently with each other. Moreover, there are growing interest and concern regarding the topological structure of these new online social networks. In this paper, we present empirical analysis of statistical properties of two important Chinese online social networks—a blogging network and an SNS open to college students. They are both emerging in the age of Web 2.0. We demonstrate that both networks possess small-world and scale-free features already observed in real-world and artificial networks. In addition, we investigate the distribution of topological distance. Furthermore, we study the correlations between degree (in/out) and degree (in/out), clustering coefficient and degree, popularity (in terms of number of page views) and in-degree (for the blogging network), respectively. We find that the blogging network shows disassortative mixing pattern, whereas the SNS network is an assortative one. Our research may help us to elucidate the self-organizing structural characteristics of these online social networks embedded in technical forms.

Abstract:Social Network Analysis (SNA) has been introduced to mainland China since the end of last century. Now it is a hot research field and can also be applied to study other disciplines as a research method or analysis tool. It is often stated that SNA research has experienced rapid growth in mainland China these years, but few studies have been conducted to prove the statement. This paper aims at exploring the research status and development of SNA in mainland China by a critical assessment of journal articles. Through selecting papers from China Academic Journals Full-text Database (CAJFD), a literature review is conducted to get an overview framework about SNA research both as a research object and a method in mainland China by bibliometric analysis and classification scheme based approach. Finally a discussion is made from the systematical data analysis, and an interesting finding is that the iSchool community in mainland China plays a leading role in the SNA related researches. Furthermore, some implications are put forward to explore how SNA can be applied to or fit with the IS-related disciplines or topics in the future.

Abstract:Social network analysis（SNA）has been introduced to China’s mainland since the end of last century.It is often stated that SNA research has experienced rapid growth in China over these years,but few studies have been conducted to prove the statement.This paper aims at exploring the research status and development of SNA in China by a critical assessment of journal articles.Our findings show that SNA is an evolving and diversified research area which has rich themes and topics,and can be applied to those studies on different levels,context and disciplines,and attract researchers and scholars from various fields and domains.In addition,the information community（Library＆Information Science and Information Systems）plays a leading role in the SNA related researches.The paper also points out the research on SNA in China has some limitations,so it proposes several implications for the future development of SNA research from perspectives of information science.
