Abstract:Expressing complex curves with simple parametric curve segments is widely used in computer graphics, CAD and so on. This paper applies rational quadratic B-spline curves to give a global C 1 continuous approximation to a large class of plane parametric curves including rational parametric curves. Its application in approximate implicitization is also explored. The approximated parametric curve is first divided into intrinsic triangle convex segments which can be efficiently approximated with rational quadratic Bézier curves. With this approximation, we keep the convexity and the cusp (sharp) points of the approximated curve with simple computations. High accuracy approximation is achieved with a small number of quadratic segments. Experimental results are given to demonstrate the operation and efficiency of the algorithm.

Abstract:We obtain a priori estimates for solutions to the prescribing scalar curvature equation[GRAPHICS]on S-n for n greater than or equal to 3. There have been a series of results in this respect. To obtain a priori estimates people required that the function R(x) be positive and bounded away from 0. This technical assumption has been used by many authors for quite a few years. It is due to the fact that the standard blowing-up analysis fails near R(x) = 0. The main objective of this paper is to remove this well-known assumption. Using the method of moving planes, we are able to control the growth of the solutions in the region where R is negative and in the region where R is small, and thus obtain a priori estimates on the solutions of (1) for a general function R which is allowed to change signs.

Abstract:In this paper, we study three kinds of nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations containing the Grushin operator. First, we prove radial symmetry and a decay rate at infinity of solutions to such a Grushin equation by using the moving plane method in combination with suitable integral inequalities. Applying similar methods, we obtain nonexistence results for solutions to a second type of Grushin equation in Euclidean space and in half space, respectively. Finally, we derive a priori estimates for positive solutions to more general types of Grushin equations by employing blow up analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, we summarize some of the recent developments in the area of fractional elliptic and parabolic equations with focus on how to apply the sliding method and the method of moving planes to obtain qualitative properties of solutions. We will compare the two methods and point out the pros and cons of each. We will demonstrate how to modify the ideas and techniques in studying fractional elliptic equations and then to employ them to investigate fractional parabolic problems. Besides deriving monotonicity of solutions, some other applications of the sliding method will be illustrated. These results have more or less appeared in a series of previous literatures, in which the ideas were usually submerged in detailed calculations. What we are trying to do here is to single out these ideas and illuminate the inner connections among them by using figures and intuitive languages, so that the readers can see the whole picture and quickly grasp the essence of these useful methods and will be able to apply them to solve a variety of other fractional elliptic and parabolic problems.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a direct method of moving spheres for the nonlocal fractional Laplacian $(-\triangle)^{\alpha/2}$ for $0<\alpha<2$, in which a key ingredient is the narrow region maximum principle. As immediate applications, we classify the non-negative solutions for a semilinear equation involving the fractional Laplacian in $\mathbb{R}^n$; we prove a non-existence result for prescribing $Q_{\alpha}$ curvature equation on $\mathbb{S}^n$; then by combining the direct method of moving planes and moving spheres, we establish a Liouville type theorem on the half Euclidean space. We expect to see more applications of this method to many other equations involving non-local operators.

Abstract:Moving planes have been widely recognized as a potent algebraic tool in various fundamental problems of geometric modeling, including implicitization, intersection computation, singularity calculation, and point inversion of parametric surfaces. For instance, a matrix representation that inherits the key properties of a parametric surface is constructed from a set of moving planes. In this paper, we present an efficient approach to computing such a set of moving planes that follow the given rational parametric surface. Our method is based on the calculation of Dixon resultant matrices, which allows for the computation of moving planes with simpler coefficients, improved efficiency and superior numerical stability when compared to the direct way of solving a linear system of equations for the same purpose. We also demonstrate the performance of our algorithm through experimental examples when applied to implicitization, surface intersection, singularity computation as well as inversion formula computation.

Abstract:Using the result of the error estimate of the simple extended Newton method established in the present paper for solving abstract inequality systems, we study the error bound property of approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems on Banach spaces with the involved function F being Fréchet differentiable and its derivative F^' satisfying the center-Lipschitz condition (not necessarily the Lipschitz condition) around a point x 0 . Under some mild conditions, we establish results on the existence of the solutions, and the error bound properties for approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems. Applications of these results to finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities on Banach spaces are presented and the error bound properties of approximate solutions of finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities are also established. Our results extend the corresponding results in [ 3 , 18 , 19 ].

Abstract:We are concerned with a priori estimates for the obstacle problem of a wide class of fully nonlinear equations on Riemannian manifolds. We use new techniques introduced by Bo Guan and derive new results for a priori second order estimates of its singular perturbation problem under fairly general conditions. By approximation, the existence of a C^1,1 viscosity solution is proved.

Abstract:In this paper we study the prescribed centroaffine curvature problem in the Euclidean space Rn+1. This problem is equivalent to solving a Monge–Ampère equation on the unit sphere. It corresponds to the critical case of the Blaschke–Santaló inequality. By approximation from the subcritical case, and using an obstruction condition and a blow-up analysis, we obtain sufficient conditions for the a priori estimates, and the existence of solutions up to a Lagrange multiplier.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain a priori estimates for the set of anti-symmetric solutions to a fractional Laplacian equation in a bounded domain using a blowing-up and rescaling argument. In order to establish a contradiction to possible blow-ups, we apply a certain variation of the moving planes method in order to prove a monotonicity result for the limit equation after rescaling.

Abstract:We study a priori error estimates of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for solving a quasi-variational inequality, which models a frictional contact problem with normal compliance. In Xiao et al. (Numer Funct Anal Optim 39:1248–1264, 2018), several DG methods are applied to solve quasi-variational inequality, but no error analysis is given. In this paper, the unified numerical analysis of these DG methods is established, and they achieve optimal convergence order for linear elements. Two numerical examples are given, and the numerical convergence orders match well with the theoretical prediction.

Abstract:This paper works on the direct method of moving spheres and establishes a Liouville-type theorem for the fractional elliptic equation \[ (-\Delta)^{\alpha/2} u =f(u) ~~~~~~ \text{in } \mathbb{R}^{n} \] with general non-linearity. One of the key improvement over the previous work is that we do not require the usual Lipschitz condition. In fact, we only assume the structural condition that $f(t) t^{- \frac{n+\alpha}{n-\alpha}}$ is monotonically decreasing. This differs from the usual approach such as Chen-Li-Li (Adv. Math. 2017), which needed the Lipschitz condition on $f$, or Chen-Li-Zhang (J. Funct. Anal. 2017), which relied on both the structural condition and the monotonicity of $f$. We also use the direct moving spheres method to give an alternative proof for the Liouville-type theorem of the fractional Lane-Emden equation in a half space. Similarly, our proof does not depend on the integral representation of solutions compared to existing ones. The methods developed here should also apply to problems involving more general non-local operators, especially if no equivalent integral equations exist.

Abstract:We consider the following nonlinear elliptic equations −Δu+u+λφ(x)|u|r−2u=|u|p−1u,x∈Ω,−Δφ(x)=|u|q,x∈Ω,φ(x)=u(x)=0 for x∈∂Ω,(P) where p,q,r>1 , λ is a parameter and Ω⊂R3 is a bounded domain. For q=r=2 , the equations reduce to the Schrödinger-Poisson equations. Without the need of imposing constraint that q must be equal to r , we establish a priori estimates, the nonexistence and existence of solutions for problem (P). Our results extend previous work for the case q=r to more general case.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to a new error analysis of nonconforming finite element methods. Compared with the classic error analysis in literature, only weak continuity, the F-E-M-Test for nonconforming finite element spaces, and basic H m regularity for exact solutions of 2m-th order elliptic problems under consideration are assumed. The analysis is motivated by ideas from a posteriori error estimates and projection average operators. One main ingredient is a novel decomposition for some key average terms on (n − 1)-dimensional faces by introducing a piecewise constant projection, which defines the generalization to more general nonconforming finite elements of the results in literature. The analysis and results herein are conjectured to apply for all nonconforming finite elements in literature.
THE IMLS METHOD OF SQUARE SPHERE

Abstract:The paper shows some of our recent developments in meshless methods. A new technique in meshless methods is given – the Interpolating Moving Least Square (IMLS) meshless method in square sphere. In the method, the technique of IMLS is adopted for the approximations of the unknown variable, and the square sphere for the geometric form of the local influence field. The adoption of these techniques presents the features of mesh free in which the nodes are placed and the numerical integration is performed without a mesh. It also satisfies the Dirichlet boundary condition. The method can be easily applied to nonlinear problems and heterosphere mechanics problems. Calculation results in two plane elastic mechanics examples show that the method has the advantages of excellent convergence rate, high accuracy and efficiency. It is very promising in engineering applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a direct method of moving planes for the fractional Laplacian. Instead of using the conventional extension method introduced by Caffarelli and Silvestre, we work directly on the non-local operator. Using the integral defining the fractional Laplacian, by an elementary approach, we first obtain the key ingredients needed in the method of moving planes either in a bounded domain or in the whole space, such as strong maximum principles for anti-symmetric functions, narrow region principles, and decay at infinity. Then, using simple examples, semi-linear equations involving the fractional Laplacian, we illustrate how this new method of moving planes can be employed to obtain symmetry and non-existence of positive solutions.We firmly believe that the ideas and methods introduced here can be conveniently applied to study a variety of nonlocal problems with more general operators and more general nonlinearities. Abstract:Based on the concept of the element energy projection (EEP) and the fix-end method, which makes a priori quantitative error estimation in finite element method (FEM) possible for boundary value problems (BVP), it extends the technique to a typical initial value problem (IVP), i.e., the motion equation. Taking the linear element with single degree of freedom as example, the possibility of a priori quantitative error estimation is discussed by using Taylor series expansion without the needs for FEM solution, which in turn achieves a priori determination of adaptive step-size for the linear time-element. Some preliminary examples are given to show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:We study positive solutions to the fractional semi-linear elliptic equation (−∆)u = K(x)u n+2σ n−2σ in B2 \ {0} with an isolated singularity at the origin, where K is a positive function on B2, the punctured ball B2 \ {0} ⊂ R n with n ≥ 2, σ ∈ (0, 1), and (−∆)σ is the fractional Laplacian. In lower dimensions, we show that, for any K ∈ C(B2), a positive solution u always satisfies that u(x) ≤ C|x|−(n−2σ)/2 near the origin. In contrast, we construct positive functions K ∈ C(B2) in higher dimensions such that a positive solution u could be arbitrarily large near the origin. In particular, these results also apply to the prescribed boundary mean curvature equations on Bn+1.
