Abstract:The surfactant-capped ZnS nanoparticulate multilayer film has been fabricated by Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) technique. ZnS LB firm was investigated by the small-angle x-ray diffraction(XRD), atomic force microscopy(AFM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The results indicate that ZnS nanoparticulate LB film is one-dimensional superlattice.

Abstract:We have used synchrotron radiation to study organic monolayers on water ("Langmuir films"). At high monolayer pressures, lead stearate [Pb${({\mathrm{C}}_{17}{\mathrm{H}}_{35}\mathrm{C}\mathrm{O}\mathrm{O})}_{2}$] shows a powder peak at 1.60 ${\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, implying an area per unit cell of 17.8 ${\mathrm{\AA{}}}^{2}$ if the lattice is triangular. The correlation length is about 250 \AA{}. Lignoceric acid (${\mathrm{C}}_{23}$${\mathrm{H}}_{47}$COOH) shows a similar peak even though no heavy ions are attached. When the pressure is reduced, the peak in lead stearate does not observably move or broaden; below the "knee" in the isotherm, however, the peak height decreases slowly with increasing area, implying a first-order melting transition.
Multilayers of 4-methylbenzenethiol functionalized gold nanoparticles fabricated by Langmuir–Blodgett and Langmuir–Schaefer deposition

Abstract:Langmuir films of gold nanoparticles functionalized by 4-methylbenzenethiol on a water subphase were studied. Multilayers on Si and glass substrates were successfully fabricated by both the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) and Langmuir–Schaefer (LS) deposition techniques. The multilayers were characterized by UV–vis spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), spectroscopic ellipsometry and tapping mode AFM. Thickness measurements by XPS and ellipsometry showed that the multilayers formed from both techniques displayed a linear increase of film thickness with the number of layers, indicating a reproducible deposition process. However, it is found that the average thickness increase after each LS stroke is about double of that in the LB transfer, indicating two monolayers were deposited in one LS stroke. AFM data revealed that the films deposited at different surface pressures exhibit different morphology. The films generally showed less defects and larger domain size at higher surface pressure. It is also found that films prepared using LS technique are more uniform and smoother than the LB films prepared under similar conditions. The possible nanoparticle deposition mechanisms of LB and LS techniques have been discussed.
Structural Investigation of Langmuir-Blodgett Films on Self-Assembly Modified Au Substrates

Abstract:To improve the homogeneity and stability of single-layer azobenzene LB films on gold, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of terminally substituted alkyl thiol, HS(CH2)(2)-X(X=NH2, OH, COOH and CH2SO3Na, respectively), were used to modify the substrates before LB film deposition. It was found that single-layer C8C3 LB films on these modified substrates were more uniform and stable. Reflecion-Absorption (RA) FTIR measurements on these films indicated that at the LB/SAMs interface, ionic bonds, have formed for the modification with -NH2 while hydrogen bonding occurred for modifications with -OH, -COOH and -SO3Na, respectively. It can be concluded that the ionic or hydrogen bonding at the LB/SAM interface is responsible for the improvement in homogeneity and stability. It was believed that the less defected films after the time aging were most probably due to the ionic bond and hydrogen bonding mentioned above.

Abstract:The monolayer of the mixture of octadecanoic acid and octadecylamine with molar ratio 1:1 has been investigated at the air–water interface. It was found that the monolayer shows a rather stable state at the surface pressure of 30mN/m and this monolayer can be transferred onto a CaF2 plate by Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique. The infrared spectra of LB films indicated that octadecylammonium octadecanoate is formed by an intermolecular proton exchange between adjacent carboxylic and aminic groups (COO− and NH3+). In three-layer LB film, the CH2 scissoring mode of the long hydrocarbon chains of octadecylammonium octadecanoate shows a broad band feature at about 1468cm−1 while this vibrational mode of three-layer LB film of the mixture (1:1) of deuterated stearic acid and octadecylamine (octadecylammonium octadecanoate-d35, C18H37NH3+C17D35COO−) only shows a narrow band. The broad feature of the CH2 scissoring mode in octadecylammonium octadecanoate probably originates from the coupling between the chain of stearic acid and that of octadecylamine while this kind of coupling could be completely removed in octadecylammonium octadecanoate-d35. Another conclusion presented in this paper is that there are no couplings among the chains of fatty acid or among the chains of octadecylamine in LB films of octadecylammonium octadecanoate.

Abstract:4-[4(-(4(-decyloxy phenylazo) naphthloxy] butyl trimethylammonium bromide can form a stable monolayer on the subphase of an aqueous sodium dextran sulfate solution. Infrared transmission, reflection-absorption and ultraviolet-visible spectra have been measured for the one- and multi-layer LB films to study the molecular orientation and aggregation in the films. It was found that the title compound does not form molecular aggregation in the LB films. The alkyl tail is nearly perpendicular to the substrate surface and adopts largely trans-zigzag conformation.

Abstract:The formation process of sodium lauryl sulfate monolayers on the surface of octadecanethiol self-assembled monolayers was investigated by the method of cyclic voltammetry and ac impedance spectroscopy. The pinhole in an octadecanethiol-coated gold electrode can be patched when adding sodium lauryl sulfate to solution. The charge transfer resistance increased but the membrane capacitance decreased with the addition of sodium lauryl sulfate or other amphiphilic substance, indicating that the adsorption of sodium lauryl sulfate on the electrode surface from solution.
Improved Thermal Stability of Langmuir-Blodgett Films Through an Intermolecular Hydrogen Bond and Metal Complex.

Abstract:Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) films of N-octadecanoyl-L-alanine and its silver and zinc complexes have been investigated by variable-temperature Fourier transform infrared transmission spectroscopy. The thermal stability of LB films is improved through an intermolecular hydrogen bond and metal complex. The intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interaction between hydrophilic head groups in the same monolayers and the metal complex between one head group and another in the neighboring monolayers considerably increase the interaction between the corresponding hydrophobic alkyl chains. It is shown that the transformation of the triclinic subcell packing of the molecules in the LB films prior to and after the silver complex into hexagonal packing occurs before the phase transition accompanied with a change in molecular orientation. The phase transition behavior of the LB films is varied from a small temperature interval to large one depending on the hydrogen bond and metal complex.

Abstract:In this work we report the Langmuir film-forming process and morphology of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of two dumbbell-shaped hybrids at the air-water interface. The hybrids are two A-B co-cluster molecules composed of two different clusters that are covalently linked together by an organic tether. Cluster A is a trivanadium-substituted derivative of a Wells-Dawson-type tungsten polyoxometalate (POM) anion and cluster B is derivatives of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) cubic cage in which seven isobutyl or isooctyl groups attached to seven corners of the cage and an aminopropyl group attached to the eighth corner. The organic tether is a terephthalic acid. In our experiment, we used Langmuir technique to determine the surface pressure-area (p-A) isotherms and cyclic compression-expansion isotherms of the two hybrids, and then studied their Langmuir film-forming processes at the air-water interface. Our investigations show that the two hybrids can form good Langmuir films, indicating that they have good amphiphilicity. The Langmuir films have a hybrid structure: a TBA-encapsulated POM layer faced to the water surface and a POSS layer contacted with air. Meanwhile, we also used Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique to prepare LB film specimens for atomic force microscopy (AFM) characterization to study the surface morphology of the films and for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization to study the morphology of the films. The root mean squares (RMS) of surface roughness of the LB films are smaller than 0.6 nm, only one sixth of the molecular length, meaning a smooth surface. Due to existence of tungsten and vanadium in the POM cluster, we successfully characterized the morphology of the LB films and observed a two-phase morphology in which the dark domains embedded a bright matrix. Appearance of the dark domains means formation of more ordered structures. The contrast and size differences between the domains and matrix are intensified during the gas-liquid and liquid-solid phase transitions. This means that it is a fluctuation phenomenon of the morphology occurring in the phase transition of condensed matter. All in all, the findings provide a new method for construction of the monomolecular LB films with a hybrid structure via a rational design of hybrid molecules.

Abstract:Monolayers of a new series of azobenzene-containing alkanethiols, having the structure CH3(CH2)n−1–Ph–NN–Ph–O–(CH2)mSH (where Ph denotes the benzene ring, n=4, 6, 8, 10, and 12, with m=3 and 5, abbreviated as CnACmSH) were formed on gold substrate by self-assembly process. The monolayers were characterized by contact angle measurement, electrochemical investigation and reflectance absorption infrared spectroscopy (RA-IR). Our results demonstrate that the head chains and the tail chains in the molecules have similar effect to the film structure. The orientations of alkyl chain and azobenzene groups in films are completely evaluated by RA-IR which reveal that the molecules in the SAMs tilt away gradually from the surface normal as the alkyl chains are lengthened. However, the effects of chain length on the orientation of alkyl chains and azobenzene groups are different due to their different spatial requirements.

Abstract:Recently the focus of the Langmuir-Blodgett technique as a method of choice to transfer monolayers from the air/water interface onto solid substrates in a controllable fashion has been shifting toward purely hydrophobic gold and silver nanoparticles. The fundamental interactions between particles that become relevant in the absence of polar groups range from dispersive attractions from the metal cores and repulsions between ligand shells to weaker entropic factors. The layer evolution is explored, starting with interfacial self-assembly upon solution spreading and domain and circular island formation, which subsequently merge into a complete monolayer and finally form multilayers or macroscopic wrinkles. Moreover, structural properties such as the core:ligand size ratio are investigated in the context of dispersive forces, whereby the nanoparticles with small cores and long ligands tend not to aggregate sufficiently to produce continuous films, those with large cores and short ligands were found to aggregate irreversibly, and those in between the two extremes were concluded to be able to form highly organized crystalline films. Similarly, the characteristics of the spreading solution such as the concentration and the solvent type crucially influence the film crystallinity, with the deciding factor being the degree of affinity between the capping ligand and the solvent used for spreading. Finally, the most common strategies employed to enhance the mechanical stability of the metal nanoparticle films along with the recent attempts to functionalize the particles in attempts to improve their applicability in the industry are summarized and evaluated in relation to their future prospects. One of the objectives of this feature article is to elucidate the differences between hydrophobic metal nanoparticles and typical amphiphilic molecules that the majority of the literature in the field describes and to familiarize the reader with the knowledge required to design Langmuir-Blodgett nanoparticle systems as well as the strategies to improve existing ones.

Abstract:Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) derived from the adsorption of organothiols onto gold have been extensively investigated for studying their potential applications to Micro- and Nanofluidics system. However, nearly all applications rely on SAMs' stability. Because high energy gold is easy to absorb organic contaminant from ambient, totally wetting gold surface can not be obtained in the laboratory environment. Flame annealing the gold surface before adsorption not only remove the organic contaminant, it also shaves the "rolling hills" on the evaporated gold surface. SAMs formed on annealed gold surface have better structure and stability than those formed on evaporated gold. These properties will be helpful for potential application on microfluidics system as a surface modification. Ex situ spectroscopic ellipsometry, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) were used to characterize the structure of SAMs.
Liquid Surface X-ray Studies of Gold Nanoparticle-Phospholipid Films at the Air/Water Interface

Abstract:Amphiphilic phospholipids and nanoparticles functionalized with hydrophobic capping ligands have previously been extensively investigated for their capacity to self-assemble into Langmuir monolayers at the air/water interface. However, understanding of composite films consisting of both nanoparticles and phospholipids, and by extension, the complex interactions arising between nanomaterials and biological membranes, remains limited. In this work, dodecanethiol-capped gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) with an average core diameter of 6 nm were incorporated into 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) monolayers in area ratios ranging from 0.1 to 20% area coverage at a surface pressure of 30 mN/m. High resolution liquid surface X-ray scattering studies revealed a phase separation of the DPPC and Au-NP components of the composite film, as confirmed with atomic force microscopy after the film was transferred to a substrate. At low Au-NP content, the structural organization of the phase-separated film is best described as a DPPC film containing isolated islands of Au-NPs. However, increasing the Au-NP content beyond 5% area coverage transforms the structural organization of the composite film to a long-range interconnected network of Au-NP strands surrounding small seas of DPPC, where the density of the Au-NP network increases with increasing Au-NP content. The observed phase separation and structural organization of the phospholipid and nanoparticle components in these Langmuir monolayers are useful for understanding interactions of nanoparticles with biological membranes.

Gold nanoparticle multilayer films based on surfactant films as a template: preparation, characterization, and application.

Abstract:Highly ordered gold nanoparticle multilayer films were achieved conveniently using didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) films as a template. The template was produced by casting DDAB chloroform solution onto the surface of a (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane-modified indium tin oxide substrate and then evaporating the organic solvent. Gold nanoparticle multilayer films were prepared by soaking the template in 2.6 nm colloidal gold solution for 120 min. The well-ordered superlattice structure of the DDAB template and the gold nanoparticle multilayer films was identified by x-ray diffraction. The characterizations of the gold nanoparticle multilayer films by UV-vis spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and cyclic voltammerty were described in detail. The application of the as-prepared gold nanoparticle multilayer films in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was investigated by using Rhodamine 6G as a probe molecule. It was found that the colloidal gold nanoparticle multilayer films exhibit remarkable enhancement ability and can be used as SERS substrates.
Roles of Metal Complex and Hydrogen Bond in Molecular Structures and Phase Behaviors of Metal N-Octadecanoyl-L-alaninate Langmuir−Blodgett Films

Abstract:The N-octadecanoyl-L-alanine Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films deposited from aqueous subphases containing metal ions (Ag+, Zn2+, Ca2+, Cd2+,Ni2+, and La3+) at their intrinsic pH values are investigated by use of FTIR spectroscopy. The results indicate that hydrogen bond and metal complex play an important role in the molecular structures and phase behaviors of the metal complex LB films. The condensing effects of Ag+ and Zn2+ ions give rise to an increase in the intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions between adjacent molecules. A preference of chelating bidentate is formed between these metal ions and carboxylate groups. The hydrocarbon chains in silver and zinc complex LB films take a biaxial orientation. The two LB films exhibit the thermal behavior of "glass transition", which results from a gradual thermal dissociation of the enhanced intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions over a wide temperature range. While, the expanding effects of Ca2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, and La2+ ions lead to the occurrence of intramolecular hydrogen bond. A monodentate/unsymmetric ionic coordination is formed between these metal ions and carboxylate groups. The hydrocarbon chains in these LB films are uniaxially oriented at the angle 40-50 degrees with regard to the respective film normals. These LB films show the phase behavior of "thermotropic liquid crystal" more than one phase process. It is regarded that the five-membered ring structures formed through intramolecular hydrogen bonds may have the similar effects to the mesogenic units in usual liquid crystals.
Molecular Level Interface Designs Using Self‐assembling Technique for Stabilizing Langmuir‐Blodgett Films

Abstract:Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of HS-(CH2)(2)-X with X being -COOH, -OH, -NH2, and -CH2SO3Na were fabricated on Au surfaces for deposition of C8H17-C6H4-N = N-C6H4-O-(CH2)(3)-COOH (ABD) LB films. Thus-created SAM/LB interfaces were studied by the grazing-angle incident reflection absorption FTIR technique. For -NH2 group, the interface was proved to be dominated by -NH3+-OOC- ionic bonding structure. When X was -COOH, an eight-membered face-to-face hydrogen bond was observed at the SAM/LB interface. With the -OH terminated interface, two types of hydrogen bond were created: one is the face-to-face hydrogen bond and the other one is the side-by-side hydrogen bond. In the case of Au/-CH2SO3Na/HOOC- interface, two terminal groups seem to exchange their cations, forming a -CH2SO3H/NaOOC-structure. The stability of these monolayer assemblies was investigated using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). II is found that all these films showed a greatly improved structural stability and the destructive three-dimensional rearrangement of ABD molecules has been effectively prohibited. The sequence of film stability was -NH2>-COOH>-OH>-CH2SO3Na, with the first two interfaces exhibiting even nice stability in aqueous solution, strong enough for tolerating the interfacial electron transfer studies.
An Ionic Surfactant-Mediated Langmuir-Blodgett Method to Construct Gold Nanoparticle Films for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering.

Abstract:A gold nanoparticle film for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was successfully constructed by an ionic surfactant-mediated Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method. The gold film was formed by adding ethanol to a gold colloid/hexane mixture in the presence of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). Consequently, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) assembled at the water/hexane interface due to the decrease in surface charge density of AuNPs. Since DTAB binds the gold surface by a coulombic force, rather than a chemical bonding, it is easily replaced by target molecules for SERS purposes. The SERS enhancement factor of the 80 nm gold nanoparticle film was approximately 1.2 × 10(6) using crystal violet (CV) as a Raman dye. The SERS signal from the proposed DTAB-mediated film was approximately 10 times higher than that from the octanethiol-modified gold film, while the reproducibility and stability of this film compared to an octanethiol-modified film were similar. This method can also be applied to other metal nanostructures to fabricate metal films for use as a sensitive SERS substrate with a higher enhancement factor.

Abstract:We synthesized a surfactant-encapsulated polyoxoanion, (DODA)(16)As4W30Cu4O112.114H(2)O (denoted SEC-1), which possesses a hydrophobic dimethyl dioctadecylammonium (DODA) shell and an encapsulated hydrophilic polyoxoanion core in organic phases. The novel organic/inorganic composite can form stable Langmuir monolayers, but it is significantly distorted when spread onto an air/water interface although the general core-shell structure seems to remain. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of SEC-1 are readily prepared by transferring the monolayers onto substrates with a transfer ratio near 1. It has been proposed that there exist well-orientated alkyl chains and highly defined layer structure in LB films. Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy at different temperatures indicates that two obvious phase transitions appear near 34 and 47 degreesC for multilayer LB films of SEC-1. The polyoxoanion can be organized to some extent within LB films with its long axis parallel to the substrate by comparing the IR transmission spectrum with the reflection-absorption spectrum. The one-monolayer LB film of SEC-1 possesses a homogeneous and flat surface morphology, and a water contact angle of 104 +/- 3degrees for odd-layer LB films shows a highly hydrophobic surface.
