Study on Teaching English-speaking Culture to Non-English Majors in China

Abstract:Culture is an important part of foreign language teaching. Accordingly this thesis tries to strike home the point that College English teachers in China should integrate English culture when they teach English. First,the necessity of English culture as part of the English language is emphasized,so English teaching is seen as a process of infusing both the target language and the target culture,which is interwoven into language itself. Then an effort is made to answer the question: "what should the English teachers teach about culture?"Next,the author explains how to carry out the teaching of cultural background. More specifically,after it is made clear that teaching English in universities is not merely a matter of teaching syntactic structures,new vocabulary and idiomatic expressions,five possible measures are listed.
