Abstract:This review presents a comprehensive view of the field of microcapsule type self-healing polymer composites. It begins with an introduction of the concept and mechanism of microencapsulation self-healing approach. It continues with a detailed discussion of the various self-healing matrix systems that have been proposed and investigated over the past five years. These self-healing matrix systems include epoxy resin, vinyl ester resin, fiber/epoxy composite materials, elastomer and poly (methyl methacrylate). The factors influencing self-healing performance of microcapsule type self-healing polymer composites, including the kinds of healing agent, wall materials of microcapsules, diameter of microcapsules, healing time and pressure, are summarized as well. This paper also deals with the different methods for evaluating self-healing efficiencies. Finally, the challenges and future research opportunities are highlighted.

Abstract:Inspired by naturally occurring species that allow for self-healing of nonfatal harm, self-healing polymeric materials have been prepared and represent a component of the intelligent materials family. These materials possess the inherent ability to rehabilitate damage produced during manufacturing and/or usage. The self-healing methodologies developed to date can be classified as intrinsic or extrinsic according to the method used to deliver the healing components to the target site in the material. Intrinsic self-healing operates through inter- or intra-macromolecular interactions, whereas extrinsic self-healing makes use of a pre-embedded healing agent. Extrinsic self-healing can be more easily realized in commercially available polymers because no structural modification of the matrix molecules is required. In recent years, extrinsic self-healing based on microencapsulated healing agents has attracted growing interest. Extrinsic self-healing in a variety of materials (including thermosets, thermoplastics, rigid, and elastomeric materials) has been demonstrated and offers recovery of both mechanical and non-structural functional properties. Self-healing based on microcapsules can deliver further results if combined with intrinsic self-healing. Using a bottom-up perspective, the current article presents a comprehensive review of recent progress in this field from the viewpoint of material design and preparation. The topics presented include (i) a basic overview of self-healing systems, (ii) microencapsulation techniques (e.g., in situ polymerization, interfacial polymerization, Pickering emulsion templating, miniemulsion polymerization, solvent evaporation/solvent extraction, sol–gel reaction, etc.), (iii) crack response of microcapsules, and (iv) healing chemistries (e.g., ring-opening metathesis polymerization, polycondensation, anionic ring opening polymerization, cationic polymerization, free radical polymerization, addition reaction, etc.). The strengths and weaknesses of each microencapsulation technique and type of healing chemistry are analyzed and compared. Additionally, formulation optimization (including species of healing agent and wall substance of capsules), processing, structure and property relationship, healing mechanisms, and stability are discussed. Trends and challenges are summarized at the end of the review. The scope of this review is to provide the reader with an overview of achievements to date and insight into future development for engineering applications.

Abstract:The self-healing poly(urea-formaldehyde) microcapsules were prepared by in-situ polymerization with epoxy resin as the core materials.The optimum preparation technology of microcapsule was determined by studying the effect of raw material amount, reaction temperature, acidif ication value and curing time on microcapsule particle size distribution and surface morphology.The forming mechanism of microcapsule was investigated by inspecting the forming process of microcapsule.The microcapsule was added into urea-formaldehyde resin.The results show that:the microcapsules with high coating ratio, compact structure, and even particle size are prepared by the optimum prepration technology, the microcapsules can be reserved at room temperature for one week without agglomeration and rupture;adding 9% microcapsules into urea-formldehyde resin, the distribution of the microcapsules is uniform, the toughness of urea-formaldehyde resin composite is improved.

Self-healing of a variety of materials (including thermosets and thermoplastics, rigid, and elastomeric) has been demonstrated by using this technique, which enables recovery of not only mechanical properties but also non-structural functional properties. The present chapter presents a comprehensive review of the recent progress in this field from the viewpoint of material design and preparation. The trends and challenges are concluded at the end of the chapter. It is hoped that the readers will be provided with a grasp of the achievements to date and an insight into the future development.

Abstract:Since delamination always occurs in the laminate structures of fiber reinforced polymer composites in engineering applications, developing self-healing composites has become more and more important nowadays, especially for large-scale composite equipment, which is difficult to maintain when in service. In this paper, the micromechanical finite element (FE) models are developed for the polymer matrix composites containing self-healing microcapsules. Based on mesoscale FE simulation and cross reference to related experimental results, we firstly reveal the rupture mechanism of microcapsules, in which the interaction between the microcapsules and microcracks propagated in the resin matrix is investigated by using the extended finite element method in ABAQUS. The mesoscale characteristics of the self-healing agent, dicyclopentadiene, during the healing process, are revealed with the help of the fluid-solid coupling FE module. Especially, the dynamic filling mechanism of the self-healing agent within the microcrack planes is physically interpreted by the use of the capillary effect and contact angle principle. Finally, the healing efficiencies of self-healing composites with different microcapsule sizes and volume fractions are quantitatively evaluated via the virtual mechanical tests of fracture toughness. To be emphasized is that most of the simulation results obtained in this work have exhibited good agreements with the corresponding experimental data, showing a robust reliability of our FE models.
Synthesis of MF microcapsule encapsulated DCPD for self-healing materials

Abstract:Self-healing material has been the hot-point of research recently.It is composed of microcapsule with active agent,catalyst for active agent’s fast cross-linking and matrix resin.The application of self-healing material is extremely affected by the mechanical properties of microcapsules,which are determined by the size distribution and shell thickness of self-healing microcapsule.Microcapsule for self-healing materials was formulated with melamine formaldehyde(MF)as shell material and dicyclopentadiene(DCPD)as core material by using in situ polymerization in this research.The relationships of size distribution and shell thickness of microcapsule versus pH value,reaction time and agitating rate were investigated with MasterSizer2000(MS2000)and transmission electron microscopy(TEM).The results showed that size distribution was worse and shell thickness did not change much when pH value was decreased.Shell thickness increased and size distribution did not change significantly when reaction time was prolonged.Size distribution was better and shell thickness did not change significantly when agitating rate was increased.

Abstract:A self-healing system based on conventional epoxy resin was successfully developed in this work. Epoxy and its hardener mercaptan were microencapsulated as two-component healing agent, and then the microcapsules were embedded in epoxy matrix. Attractive healing effect can be acquired at low capsule content (e.g., 43.5% healing efficiency with 1 wt % capsules and 104.5% healing efficiency with 5 wt % capsules at 20 degrees C for 24 h). Since only a few healant proves to be sufficient for crack repairing, a better balance between strength and toughness restoration can thus be achieved. As a result of high flowability, fast consolidation, and molecular miscibility of the released healing agent consisting of epoxy and mercaptan, self-healing was allowed to proceed rapidly offering satisfactory repair effectiveness.

Abstract:Microcapsule-based self-healing polymer materials are highly desirable because they can heal large-volume cracks without changing the original chemical structures of polymers. However, they are limited by processing difficulties and inhomogeneous distributions of two components. Herein, we report a one-component photoresponsive self-healing polymer composite with photoabsorbing hybrid microcapsules (PAHM), which gives the microcapsules photoabsorbing properties by introducing nano-TiO2 particles as photoabsorbing and emulsified agents in the poly(urea-formaldehyde)/TiO2 hybrid shells. Upon mechanical damage and then exposure to light, the photoresponsive healing agents in the cracks will be solidified to allow for self-healing, while the healing agents in the unbroken PAHM will be protected and remain unreacted, which endows this photoresponsive microcapsule-based self-healing composite with self-healing properties like those found in the conventional two-component microcapsule-based systems. Given the universality of this hybrid polymerization method, incorporation of the photoabsorbing particles to conventional polymer shells may further broaden the scope of applications of these widely used materials.

Abstract:This paper begins with a review of the research status of microcapsules-based self-healing polymeric materials including dicyclopentadiene-Grubbs catalyst,polydimethylsiloxane-tin (Pt) catalyst,epoxy-curing agent and isocyanate system. Self-healing mechanism and research progress of encapsuled isocyanate self-healing material are summarized. Self-healing function of particles encapsuled isocyanate actived through the curing process of isocyanate agent(mainly includes isophorone diisocyanate,hexamethylene diisocyanate and its trimer ) healing in moisture environment. Following that,the factors (core material,mechanical property of microcapsules and its compatibility with substrate) influencing self-healing properties of microcapsules-based self-healing polymeric materials are briefly discussed. Finally,the future research directions,eg. establishment of self-healing process models and applications of microcapsules to material with microstructure such as grain boundary,porosity,are pointed out and the application prospects(improving the reliability of some high-speed high-risk projects such as aerospace and civil high-speed rail,self-healing coatings and adhesives development) of self-healing materials are exhibited.

Abstract:Bioinspired self-healing carriers can cost-effectively repair crack damage in functional materials without detection, analysis, or any type of human intervention. In this study, an effective structured self-healing microcarrier is prepared through a single-step microfluidic method. These microcarriers are self-contained core-shell microcapsules with the healant and the curing agent encapsulated in separate chambers of a single capsule. Because microfluidics are versatile, our fabrication method generates unique structures in which the ratio of the agents can be precisely adjusted, and thus, the reaction kinetics and the cost can be well controlled. Such carriers can be embedded into various material matrices, including bulk pellets and film materials, which maintain satisfactory mechanical properties after being damaged and repaired. These attractive features may establish an approach for microfluidic preparation of self-healing materials and may open up avenues for the development of intelligent self-healing materials for military equipment, electronic products, architectural materials, etc. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:Urea-formaldehyde microcapsules containing epoxy resin is a promising material for self-healing design. The microcapsules were prepared by in-situ polymerization in an oil-in-water emulsion. The microcapsule formation process was monitored using optical microscopy. Surface morphology was observed using field emission scanning electron microscopy. The thermal property of microcapsules was characterized using thermogravimetric analysis. The results indicate that microcapsule wall has a rough outer surface and a smooth inner surface. The microcapsule size is controlled by different agitation rates. Microcapsules have a good thermal stability below 157°C.

Abstract:The built-in self-healing capability, which can substantially repair the damaged polymeric materials, has become research hotspots in recent years. In this study, double-walled microcapsules were introduced in epoxy composite films to obtain a strong self-healing ability, and the embedded microcapsules were produced by the previous studies. The microstructure and micromechanical properties of the composite films were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and nanoindentation, and its mechanical behaviors and self-healing mechanism during the tensile process were tested by using the digital speckle correlation method (DSCM). The results showed that the epoxy composite films with 3.0 wt% microcapsules had the highest mechanical property improvement and the composite films with 5.0 wt% microcapsules achieved the highest self-healing efficiency of 61 %. In addition, two typical self-healing behaviors of the composite films were obtained by analyzing and interpreting the Y-direction strain field and StS value through DSCM, the mechanism of self-healing procedure was proposed.

Abstract:Dielectric polymers, widely used in various applications, are often subjected to prolonged mechanical, electrical, and thermal stresses, which can result in minor localized damage and increase the risk of insulation failure. To address this, we have developed self-healing microcapsules using micro fluidic techniques. These microcapsules are designed to rupture upon slight damage to the polymers, releasing the core repair agent that fills and cures the damaged area under external UV light. To enhance the UV protection of the repair agent, TiO 2 nanoparticles were incorporated into the microcapsule shell, acting as a UV shielding medium. The self-healing capacity and intrinsic properties of the microcapsules and their composites were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, broadband dielectric spectroscopy, and a power frequency breakdown test platform. The results demonstrate that the inclusion of TiO 2 nanoparticles provides effective UV shielding, preserving the reactivity of the core repair agent. Consequently, the composite materials not only achieve self-healing of mechanical damage but also maintain the excellent intrinsic properties of dielectric polymers.

Abstract:In the using of materials, kinds of injury which is sometimes difficult to repair or too costly to repair may appear in the surface and interior, which will shorten the life of the materials. Self-healing technology can be used to improve material reliability and extend the service life, so composite materials with self-healing capability become an important research content of smart materials. Self-healing materials can perform self-diagnosis after suffered from external forces and repair the crack or damage in a certain degree. According to the healing agents applied or not in the self-healing process, self-healing methods in polymer materials can be classified into extrinsic self-healing and intrinsic self-healing. Based on the latest research achievements, several typical extrinsic self-healing methods are summarized, including microcapsule self-healing, hollow-fiber self-healing and microcapsule self-healing. Several repairing mechanisms, self-healing system characteristic, existing problems and present research status are elaborated. Future research on self-healing materials is prospected, optimizing and developing new healing agents system in order to improve the self-healing efficiency and realizing the true smart materials.
