Abstract:We have studied an anomalous microwave (mw) response of superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) microstrip resonators in the presence of a weak dc magnetic field, H-dc. The surface resistance (R-s) and reactance (X-s) show a correlated non-monotonic behavior as a function of H-dc. R-s and X-s were found to initially decrease with elevated H-dc and then increase after H-dc reaches a crossover field, H-c, which is independent of the amplitude and frequency of the input mw signal within the measurements. The frequency dependence of R-s is almost linear at fixed H-dc with different magnitudes (< H-c, = H-c and > H-c). The impedance plane analysis demonstrates that r(H), which is defined as the ratio of the change in R-s(H-dc) and that in X-s(H-dc), is about 0.6 at H-dc < H-c and 0.1 at H-dc > H-c. The H-dc dependence of the surface impedance is qualitatively independent of the orientation of H-dc. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Several types of quasi-particle injections into YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) micro-bridge have been studied, revealing the quasi-particle non-equilibrium effect, the current superposition effect and the heating effect. The current gain’s dependence on temperatures indicates that superconductivity of YBCO is really suppressed by quasi-particle injection. We propose a new type of quasi-particle injection which turns out to be a promising candidate for interface between superconductor and semiconductor circuits.

Abstract:To implement quantum-information processing, microwave fields are often used to manipulate superconducting qubits. We study how the coupling between superconducting charge qubits can be controlled by variable-frequency magnetic fields. We also study the effects of the microwave fields on the readout of the charge-qubit states. The measurement of the charge-qubit states can be used to demonstrate the statistical properties of photons.

Abstract:High resolution measurements of superfluid density and broadband quasiparticle conductivity have been used to probe the low energy excitation spectrum of nodal quasiparticles in underdoped YBCO. Penetration depth is measured to temperatures as low as 0.05 K. Microwave conductivity is measured from 0.1 to 20 GHz and is a direct probe of zero-energy quasiparticles. The data are compared with predictions for a number of theoretical scenarios that compete with or otherwise modify pure d-wave superconductivity, in particular commensurate and incommensurate spin and charge density waves; d + i s and d + i d superconductivity; circulating current phases; and the BCS--BEC crossover. We conclude that the data are consistent with a pure d-wave state in the presence of a small amount of strong scattering disorder, and are able to rule out most candidate competing states either completely, or to a level set by the energy scale of the disorder, ~ 4 K. Commensurate spin and charge density orders, however, are not expected to alter the nodal spectrum and therefore cannot be excluded.

Abstract:We have measured the effect of microwave irradiation on the dc current-voltage characteristics of superconducting atomic contacts. The interaction of the external field with the ac supercurrents leads to replicas of the supercurrent peak, the well known Shapiro resonances. The observation of supplementary fractional resonances for contacts containing highly transmitting conduction channels reveals their non-sinusoidal current-phase relation. The resonances sit on a background current which is itself deeply modified, as a result of photon assisted multiple Andreev reflections. The results provide firm support for the full quantum theory of transport between two superconductors based on the concept of Andreev bound states.

Abstract:The microwave surface resistance R-s of YBa2Cu3O thin film on LaAlO2 has been measured as a function of temperature and magnetic field through a resonant cavity technique. At zero field, the temperature dependence of R-s shows a BCS-like variation at higher temperatures and then tends to level off at lower temperatures. A general linear and square-root field dependence of R-s at low and high fields, respectively, has been obtained for both flux flow and pinning dominant regions based on the flux motion theory. The cross-over field H* from linear to square-root R-s(H) dependence was found to be very different for these two regions, In the flux flow region, H* linearly depends on the microwave frequency, white it is independent of the frequency in the flux pinning region. The experimental results for R-s(H) at about 10 GHz show a linear relationship at high temperatures and a transition from linearity to nonlinearity al low temperatures. The temperature dependence of the slope of the linear R-s(H) has been derived and can be well accounted for in terms of the flux flow model. The anisotropy of R-s(H) was measured in different magnetic and electrical field orientations. The results can be qualitatively expressed in terms of the flux motion theory.

Abstract:We have carried out field-modulated critical current measurements of nominally pure, doped, and ion-irradiation YBCO tricrystal microbridges in order to probe superconducting pairing state symmetry. Our results in the short junction limit are consistent with a real combination of large d-wave and small s-wave components of the order parameter.

Abstract:The transport property of a superconducting Pb nanobridge, which is carved by focus ion beam technique from an atomically flat single-crystal Pb thin film grown on Si(111) substrate, is investigated. Below the superconducting transition temperature TC, the nanobridge exhibits a series of sharp voltage steps as a function of current. The multiple voltage steps are interpreted as a consequence of spatially localized phase slip centers or hot-spot formation in the bridge. Just below the critical current, the voltages versus current curve shows a power-law behavior in the low temperature region, but Ohmic near the TC. The thermally activated phase slip, quantum phase slip, and imhomogeneity in a one-dimensional superconducting system may contribute to the observed results.

Abstract:We revisit the problem of the dynamic response of a superconducting bridge after abruptly switching on the supercritical current $I>I_c$. In contrast to previous theoretical works we take into account spatial gradients and use both the local temperature approach and the kinetic equation for the distribution function of quasiparticles. In both models the finite delay time $t_d$ in the voltage response is connected with temporary cooling of quasiparticles due to the suppression of the superconducitng order parameter by current. We find that $t_d$ has different values and different temperature dependencies in the considered models. In turns out that the presence of even small inhomogeneities in the bridge or of bulk leads/contacts at the ends of the {\it homogenous} bridge favors a local suppression of the superconducting order parameter $|\Delta|$ during the dynamic response. It results in a decrease of the delay time, in comparison with the spatially uniform model, due to the diffusion of nonequilibrium quasiparticles from the region with locally suppressed $|\Delta|$. In case the current distribution is spatially nonuniform across the bridge the delay time is mainly connected with the time needed for the nucleation of the first vortex at the position where the current density is maximal (at $I\sim I_c$ and for not very wide films). We also find that a short alternating current pulse (sinusoid like) with zero time-average may result in a nonzero time-averaged voltage response where its sign depends on the phase of the ac current.

Abstract:We study the metastable response of a highly hysteretic DC-SQUID made of a Niobium loop interrupted by two nano-bridges. We excite the SQUID with an alternating current and with direct magnetic flux, and find different stability zones forming diamond-like structures in the measured voltage across the SQUID. When such a SQUID is embedded in a transmission line resonator similar diamond structures are observed in the reflection pattern of the resonator. We have calculated the DC-SQUID stability diagram in the plane of the exciting control parameters, both analytically and numerically. In addition, we have obtained numerical simulations of the SQUID equations of motion, taking into account temperature variations and non-sinusoidal current-phase relation of the nano-bridges. Good agreement is found between experimental and theoretical results.

Abstract:Crossed magnetic field effects on bulk high-temperature superconductors have been studied both experimentally and numerically. The sample geometry investigated involves finite-size effects along both (crossed) magnetic field directions. The experiments were carried out on bulk melt-processed Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) single domains that had been pre-magnetized with the applied field parallel to their shortest direction (i.e. the c-axis) and then subjected to several cycles of the application of a transverse magnetic field parallel to the sample ab plane. The magnetic properties were measured using orthogonal pick-up coils, a Hall probe placed against the sample surface and Magneto-Optical Imaging (MOI). We show that all principal features of the experimental data can be reproduced qualitatively using a two-dimensional finite-element numerical model based on an E-J power law and in which the current density flows perpendicularly to the plane within which the two components of magnetic field are varied. The results of this study suggest that the suppression of the magnetic moment under the action of a transverse field can be predicted successfully by ignoring the existence of flux-free configurations or flux-cutting effects. These investigations show that the observed decay in magnetization results from the intricate modification of current distribution within the sample cross-section. It is also shown that the model does not predict any saturation of the magnetic induction, even after a large number (~ 100) of transverse field cycles. These features are shown to be consistent with the experimental data.

Abstract:Systematic microwave surface impedance measurements of YBCO single crystals grown in $BaZrO_3$ crucibles reveal new properties that are not directly seen in similar measurements of other YBCO samples. Two key observations obtained from complex conductivity are: a new normal conductivity peak at around 80K and additional pairing below 65K. High pressure oxygenation of one of the crystals still yields the same results ruling out any effect of macroscopic segregation of O-deficient regions. A single complex order parameter cannot describe these data, and the results suggest at least two superconducting components. Comparisons with model calculations done for various decoupled two-component scenarios (i.e. s+d, d+d) are presented. Systematics of three single crystals show that the 80K quasiparticle peak is correlated with the normal state inelastic scattering rate. Close to Tc, the data follow a mean-field behavior. Overall, our results strongly suggest the presence of multiple pairing temperature and energy scales in $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.95}$.
Theory of absorption spectrum in the nonequilibrium steady state of superconductors under microwave irradiation

Abstract:We discuss the absorption spectrum of dirty s-wave superconductors in the nonequilibrium steady state under a homogeneous and monochromatic microwave. In this state, there exists a finite density of states at lower energies than the superconducting gap, and the distribution function is also defined in this energy region. Because of the reduction of the distribution function below the superconducting gap, the absorption by thermally excited quasiparticles is suppressed in the nonequilibrium state compared with that in the equilibrium case. This is in contrast to the cases of the gap function and the absorption by direct excitation, to which the variation of the distribution function above the superconducting gap mainly contributes. It is also shown that amplitude modes are generated by frequency mixing of the pump wave and the probe wave, and two peaks appear in the absorption spectrum.

Abstract:We have studied the microwave induced steps of the grain-boundary junctions fabricated with epitaxial superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 thin films on bicrystal substrates. Clear steps up to N=46 were observed in the current-voltage characteristics at liquid nitrogen temperature. The comparison between the prediction of RSJ model has been made and the structure non-uniformity is introduced to interpret the discrepancy of step-height as a function of microwave amplitude.
Experimental Observation and Simulation of Unusual Microwave Response for the Superconducting Microstrip Resonator at Small Dc Magnetic Field

Abstract:An unusual microwave response of the surface impedance Zs of high-Tc thin films at an applied small dc magnetic field (Bdc) at 77 K, namely a decrease of Zs, is observed with the microstrip resonator technique. The resonant frequency is 1.107 GHz. The direction of Bdc is parallel or perpendicular to the a-b plane. Bdc ranges from 0 to 200 G. It is found that the surface resistance (Rs) at Bdc parallel to the a-b plane first decreases with Bdc and then increases above a crossover field. The Rs behaviour for Bdc perpendicular to the a-b plane is the same but with a different crossover field. The two behaviours can be collapsed to one curve by scaling the crossover fields. The changes of surface reactance Xs correlated linearly with the changes of Rs in the ranges of Bdc. The ratios rH of changes of Rs and Xs (rH = Rs/ Xs) are 0.5 at Bdc less than the crossover field and 0.1 at Bdc greater than the crossover field. The measurements also show that the crossover field is independent of rf input power. A phenomenological model is also proposed to explain this unusual behaviour. By adjusting fitting parameters the computed results agree with the experimental results qualitatively.

Abstract:Measurements of the microwave surface impedance $Z_s(T)=R_s(T)+iX_s(T)$ and of the complex conductivity $\sigma_s(T)$ of high-quality, high-$T_c$ single crystals of YBCO, BSCCO, TBCCO, and TBCO are analyzed. Experimental data of $Z_s(T)$ and $\sigma_s(T)$ are compared with calculations based on a modified two-fluid model which includes temperature-dependent quasiparticle scattering and a unique temperature variation of the density of superconducting carriers. We elucidate agreement as well as disagreement of our analysis with the salient features of the experimental data. Existing microscopic models are reviewed which are based on unconventional symmetry types of the order parameter and on novel mechanisms of quasiparticle relaxation.

Abstract:Large, single-grain (RE)BCO (where RE = rare earth or Y) bulk superconductors with complicated geometries are required for a variety of potential applications, such as rotating machines, magnetic bearings and magnetic separation. As a consequence, the top multi-seeded melt growth process has been studied over many years in an attempt to deliver large, single grains for practical applications. Among these techniques, the so-called bridge-seeding produces the best alignment of two seeds during melt processing of multi-seed samples. In this paper, the trapped field performance and magnetic flux dynamics of two bridge-seeded, multi-seed samples magnetized by pulsed field magnetization are analyzed: one with a 45°–45° and another with a 0°–0° bridge seed. Based on an analysis of the flux penetration across the seeds and in-between the seeds of the 45°–45° multi-seed sample, an estimated J c distribution over the ab-plane is determined, which provides the basis for further analysis via numerical simulation. A three-dimensional finite-element model, developed to qualitatively reproduce and interpret the experimental results, was employed to investigate the influence of the length of the bridge seed for such multi-seed samples. The simulation results agree well with the observed experimental results, in that the multi-seed sample's particular inhomogeneous J c distribution acts to distort the trapped field profile from a traditional conical Bean's profile, which is determined by the length and direction of the bridge seed on the bulk surface.
